It figures that when I did a search for Sonic in Bakersfield, I get 5 matches on Yelp. What. The. Hell. So I'm hoping I'm reviewing the correct location. If not, they're all the same, right? On a sad note, there is only one, solamente, Sonic in the entire LA/OC area. How is it called America's drive-thru spot with only one in the busiest hub of Southern California. Yet there are five in Bakersfield. No insult to Bakersfield but you're no LA much less Long Beach. I remembered all the Sonic commercials on late night TV inciting my hunger pangs. It struck me as odd since I had never seen any Sonics, ever! I did a search and realized the closest one was in Bakersfield. [This was before they built the Anaheim one, I guess.] Even if the food was like manna, I was not going to drive to Bakersfield for fast food. This is my long-winded explanation of the first time I went. I was driving to the Bay area and made a special detour to Sonic's in Bakersfield because I had to find out if the food was that good. I'm glad to say it was! The Texas toast sandwich is so good! Oh my! The coconut milkshake...mmmm.... The strawberry milkshake! Yum-mee! I couldn't believe the dessert menu board was separate and just as large as the non dessert menu! That is so awesome! I became a fan right then and there! The service people were nice and I didn't wait that long for the food. I even convinced my friends from the Bay area to make that detour before they came to visit me. They were so glad that when they went back, another detour! Yep, I wasn't the only one. Next time I go to Sonics, I'll try the Anaheim one! read more

After a long Saturday in Delano, we went to Sonic on Olive Drive that night. When we pulled in, there were hoards of high school students that night. I almost did a 180 and turned around, but we were craving the slushies. It also seemed that they were trying to set up some races that night. Luckily, I didn't drive a rice rocket with loud exhaust, so we blended in perfectly. All the parking spots were taken, so we forced ourselves to the drive thru. It was a hassle getting to the drive thru because all these people were blocking the roads. It was hard for the Sonic employee to hear me because of the excessive noise in the background. We just ordered dessert, but they got screwed up two of the slushies. We didn't even bother coming back because our primary objective was to leave that Sonic alive. For me, a trip through the Sonic drive-through has always been about one of two things - the chili cheese tater tots or the Route 44 size family of limeade drinks. I'm a chili cheese fry addict. I've had them all over town; from Carl's Jr. to Zingos, with processed cheese goo and with real grated cheddar. They've arrived on china plate and in cardboard containers, sprinkled with chopped onions or pristine. Nowhere else have I found chili cheese TATER TOTS, though. It isn't even about whether they actually TASTE better than their fry nemeses, but about the whole TOT experience. Eating tater tots evokes so many fond memories - watching my mom or grandmother pry them off the cookie sheet with a spatula and then sneaking some before dinner and surreptitiously popping them in my mouth one by one when they weren't looking. And who didn't watch Napoleon Dynamite sneaking those tots out of his pocket during class and wonder whether they were gutsy enough to try the same thing? No, I never actually did it - cold tots are NOT my thing - but I did spend an inordinate time wondering about it! (how to keep them toasty warm, yet still crispy?) Or Ron White saying "My name is tater salad. I call my son tater tot?" Sonic's large order of chili cheese tater tots comes in the same long skinny container that their coney dogs are served in. It feels like I'm eating tots by the foot. And these babies arrive with the grated cheese I prefer, not the melted processed cheese goo - score! My first love at Sonic will always be the Route 44 diet cherry limeades, though I've flirted with the cranberry limeades, the strawberry limeades, and when I'm feeling particularly spartan - the plain old limeades. Did you know that you can order yourself a diet cranberry cherry limeade? I admit it's a bit on the sweet side, but oh-so-good and worth a try at the very least! And this location is pretty good about giving me a few extra maraschino cherries in my drink, too! This particular Sonic is a hangout - meet up spot for one of the local classic car clubs, too, so if you hit it on the right evening you can enjoy the parade of beautifully restored classic cars while you scarf your gut-busting artery-clogging favorites! And don't forget to practice trying to tie those cherry stems with just your teeth! read more

This sonic does not seem to screw my burger order up like the one on Rosedale does. I ordered a route 44 cherry limeade last week and there was no cherry-not even one. It was not during happy hour, I paid full price. Call the drink what it is seven up with two slices of limes in it as in cherry delete. I will still come here but come on Sonic- how much is a gallon of cherries (or maybe they come in a big pail??? Who knows. It is however a better place now than it was ten years ago when the street racers met here on Saturday nights. read more

Pressed the button to ask for a new one, no answer, called the store they said all the slushes were down. And they can give me a drink instead.. you would think they would let you know when they brought the food out. Waited another 10-15 minutes. Still no drink. Pressed the button someone answered I asked for a refund; then they ignored me. Called the store manager came out asking for receipt to do refund for drinks then comes back out saying she can't give me a refund because I ordered food as well. read more

On our way back to Riverside from hiking in Yosemite we stopped off at this fine establishment. The restaurant is conveniently located off the 99, though making a left-turn on Olive St proved to be more daunting than the task of ascending Half Dome the day before. That being said, parking was ample. Ordering was simple enough. You can choose to drive through, sit in your car and order from a stall, or order from a microphone menu conveniently located in their spacious patio area. As it was a beautiful Bakersfield day, our party opted for the outdoor patio. The service was prompt. Pressing the red button on the outdoor menu summons a friendly but muffled voice to take your order, and the selection of foods is extensive. Being the patriot I am, I ordered the "California Burger," a delightful cheeseburger topped with Thousand Island dressing. At three dollars and change, it rivaled its In-n-Out Burger contemporary both in price and in gastronomic quality. The experience was not without minor hiccups. Our server brought out the wrong bill and was forced to retreat to the kitchen to rectify the situation. For this she did apologize, twice, and it did not detract from the quality of the meal. The strawberry shakes (buy one, get one free, no coupon required!) featured chunks of real strawberries and were described as "pretty good." The french fries were sub-par in a world where McDonald's has pretty much perfected the fried side, but the slushies made up for this by trumping TGIF's signature drink. Overall the experience was very positive. From the helpful staff to the cubed-crushed ice, the Sonic's on Olive St. in Bakersfield, CA is a fantastic little food joint with some good eats for a very reasonable amount of coinage. I was in the drive through today and ordered a Route 44 Cherry Limeade with extra cherry fruit. I asked the girl to hook me up with the cherries, I didn't care that it cost more. I sipped on the drink throughout the afternoon then popped the lid open and saw cherries and more cherries! The girl who made my drink REALLY hooked it up. I needed that today. Don't bother ordering ahead on the app - this location is much more concerned with getting orders for the drive-thru ready and to heck with anyone that orders ahead on the app. I have been here waiting to pick up a mobile order for over 20 minutes and the excuse I got is that they are "short-staffed". That might be believable if the line of cars in the drive thru wasn't moving through at a pretty fast pace. Total lack of customer service. We stopped here for a dinner/gas/bathroom break and to swap drivers on our return from Bishop to the Bay Area. The last resort route since highway 88 had a chain restriction posted and would have likely taken longer to get through the mountains. We opted for the 100 mile detour and made it back in less than 7 hours (drive time). I've had Sonic a few times growing up, but it's not very prevalent in the Bay Area. Good, solid burgers though. I ordered the equivalent of an In-n-Out double-double and found it to be pretty good. Fries were meh. Oh, but I did sub my drink in the combo meal for a chocolate malt. Soooo good. Really thick too, you will need some serious suckage strength to get even a half mouth full. I'm not kidding. It really hit the spot, but have water nearby to quench your thirst because it's really sweet. They also have a dessert similar to the McFlurry, basically vanilla soft serve blended with your choice of candy bits. Sugar...we all love it. The separate dessert menu is key, don't miss it. Actually, the main menu (driver side), has all/most the dessert stuff on it, but the separate dessert menu on the passenger side has more details, pics, etc. Ask your buddy to duck so you can see, or just get out and look at the menu on the opposite side if your display if the adjacent spot on the left is empty. There was a bathroom outside, but it seemed permanently locked and they told us there's no key. Perhaps a homeless person moved in. The whole time we were stopped the door didn't open once (it was directly in front of us). There's a 7-Eleven nearby on Olive on the other side of 99, use the bathroom there and pump gas while you're at it. This will be *the* spot for dinner if we ever have to go to/from Bishop via Bakersfield. As a bonus, it's not far off 99. read more

I LOVE THIS SONIC! I go here multiple times a week, usually just for the half price drinks at happy hour (I'm also a fan of the half price milkshakes after 8pm). While the customer service is pretty standard, I've never had a bad experience with the food or employees. The quality is very consistent, and they're patient even if you have complicated drink requests. My personal recommendation is for the Banana Split Master Blast (to die for), and the popcorn chicken. Waited in the drive thru for twenty minutes. So slow. In my time waiting I couldn't help but notice how filthy the place is. The windows need to be washed badly. There is Nast drips coming down all the windows they look sticky. I watched the attendant touch the dirty window and then give people their food. And I could see trash all over their floor inside. And they have a bike stored inside. I'm no expert but I'm sure that's not code. Do they not do daily cleaning? It makes me question the cleanliness if the food equipment. And the sidewalks need to be power washed badly. Take a look at their windows you will see what I mean. Theirs no excuse. read more

Had a stop in at the local airport and decided on lunch at Sonic Burger... Sure I could have gone to another airconditioned establishment, but eating that burger and scrumptious cherry-limeaid in a rental car on a brisk 98 degree day was well worth it. Service was quick, food was great, and I gave the girl a couple of bucks as a tip. If you can rollerskate, dodge cars, deliver food, and count change... you definitely deserve it! Round 2, 3rd food stop. Had breakfast this time. Breakfast toaster with bacon, although I ordered sausage, it was still quite tasty. And although I didn't ask for a combo, they assumed I did. Ordering at car port station is a little difficult having to repeat the order... But thank God for 24 hour breakfast. They serve tater tots with the combo. Awesome. For a little desert snack I had some cinna snacks. Small egg shaped dough with the cinamon contents inside. As I dipped it into the frosting cup in a teabagging motion. I took a bite and some of the filling fell out on my shirt. Like I got jizzed on, I learned my lesson and popped the second serving in whole and took it down like a champ... Overall, Sonic experience #2 was pretty much solid. They tend to serve a lot of ice in the drinks. Cheap bastards... Oh well, still pretty good. Pow! read more

I know this is petty. But tonight is the THIRD time I have went to sonic and they weren't busy yet I waited for at least 30 minutes for my 2 milkshakes and lemonade. This is again the THIRD time that I have ordered an Oreo cheesecake milkshake and apparently that is just to difficult to make. I don't understand it. First time I paid for Oreo yet didn't get any it was only cheesecake however they added so much cheesecake flavoring it was incredibly sour so I just threw it away even my 1 1/2 year old didn't want it (WOW). Then I go and they gave me a Reese's shake?!? "Oh I'm sorry if you pull up to the front we will make you another one it will be about 10 minutes" I have already been here for 30! I'm good whatever.
