If you go to Sonic after reading this review, you deserve what you get. The only reason I picked this place was because I wanted a shake. We pulled into a stall and right off the bat, we were told they were out of shakes. We should have left, but we ordered anyway. Twenty five minutes later, we were notified in the screen that a car hop was bringing our order. Twenty five minutes after that, I tried to ask about my order. There really isn't a window, so I grabbed a car hop, who completely ignored me. In his defense he was dealing with at least five other customers trying to find their orders. I looked into their work area. There were about twenty orders on the counter waiting to be delivered to customers. There were also flys buzzing around the orders of food. I can't really critique their cuisine, because at that point enough was enough and we left. We are NOT the first customers to leave without their food. This was my first visit to this location coming from San Jose. We got to the drive thru about 15 mins before they were closed and by the time we got to the window after waiting in line it was 12:03 and was told the kitchen was closed. We were also the last car in line and with a history of working in food, I know one more customer wouldn't have hurt. This location has gone to shit. I came around 9:15p on 6/3/18 and first attempted to order at a stall. We were quickly told there were no sodas or shakes available. We continue to wait and nobody takes our order. Pushed the button again, no response. .. Ended up going through the drive thru, but of course they fucked up my order anyway. This spot used to be chill now it's littered with garbage, employees standing outside while they appear to still be on the clock, vandalised menu signage and absolutely NO type of management or direction. Today I ordered an ice cream sandwich with my order, I paid and 5 minute later someone comes out to tell me they are put of ice cream sandwiches. Got there and nearly all stalls full and drive through line was around parking lot and out in the street - that should have been a warning sign. Sonic Drive-In Drive In Hayward. Located off Mission BLVD in a near dead strip mall center I guess. There is a good amount of parking but be ready to enjoy some crowds and wait time. I use to drive out to Tracy just to get Sonic's in the past. But now there is one and Hayward and I know why it's not my go to place. This place is busy. No matter what time of the day you drive by. The stalls are full of cars and you have a 15 + minute wait on the drive through. I think this is a good and bad but mostly bad. I don't want to wait 15 minutes in my car running waiting at the drive through. It's by far one of the slowest drive through I have ever seen. But so if you are a smart yelper you will think I'll just pull up into a stall and not wait to order in the drive through it will be fast. Well you though wrong here. I pulled up in the stall as there was 7 cars deep waiting to order at the drive through. I hit the button to order takes about 2 minutes to get someone. No problem they are bit busy Sunday Night. I order I look at my phone 6:02 PM. Lets see how long it takes I'll also track the last car to see if I beat them to my food. They have a pretty cool screen that shows your order is being made in the stall. But my issue was it went away after 10 minutes. I was like are they still making my food? It went back to a menu to order. I almost called and asked. So about the 22 minute mark I get my food brought out to me. The person doesn't have any ketchup for my tots and has to go back in to get some? You can't keep them in the oversize apron you are wearing? I mean I thought it would be common sense if you are bring out the food to have condiments for people. I was already 23 minutes into my trip deep for fast food. As a most people I hate to wait and can be impatient so I just told them forget it. As I'm leaning 23 minutes in the same car I would of been behind was leaving as well. So the stall time was the around the as the drive through if not longer I was greeted to a very soggy burger, the toots were the only saving grace of my meal but I didn't have any ketchup with them. This is probably the worst sonic I've been to. They have terrible customer service. My husband and I went into the drive in and ordered two full meals. We came all the way to the one in Hayward because we don't have one in Palo Alto. Sonic is a great place for, like, way too many milkshakes options! I don't really come here to eat food, but when I am craving dessert in a cup, this is the place to be! I mostly like chocolate and oreo flavored milkshakes, and there's a lot of choices here that fit that description! However, there are so many different options, I get slightly frustrated because I can't choose and when I ask them what the differences are, they have a hard time explaining! Also, one time I ordered something by name and they gave me something else that was so close in name, but not the specific type of shake I wanted. Just tainted it a little bit. Especially since the lines are usually pretty long (especially during the night and weekends). So waiting in a super long drive thru line and then getting the wrong thing, brings down the experience a bit. I think it they included a more detailed explanation of their shakes, it could be really helpful to people! Or at least... Me. Prices are decent, and parking is pretty easy. They have the drive up menus and stations where your food can be brought to you. I've experienced it several times where I would pull up to one of those, and it says "push the button to order," I wait there for at least 5 minutes, and then finally someone comes on and says "we're closed, you have to go through the drive thru," or I just had to figure it out myself that they we're closed. We were going to sit outside and enjoy on a beautiful night, but there was to many strange people sitting outside. After epic anticipation and driving past Sonic's over and over again, waiting for their line to get short enough for me to be willing to wait in, I made it! Let's do a list to save time. Things I did not like: 1. The line. Of course. Confusing menus that don't list everything they sell on it, just combos. 3. Ordering food and having a short conversation about it, to find that it didn't end up being put on our order. 4. Having the cashier tell us that the bacon cheeseburger, did not, have a burger patty. 5. How their cherry limeade did not have enough cherry. 6. Their chicken wrap was not good. Do not want. I did enjoy: 1. TATER TOTS. The ultimate kid's food. 2. Paying $1.15 for a 44 ounce cherry limeade during happy hour. 3. Jalapeno poppers with ranch, yummy! 4. All of the lovely servers on their rollerskates who helped correct the errors in our order. And the server who took a few minutes off on her break to help get our order all cleared up. We stopped to pick-up some burgers on our way home. I had to try this place after reading so much about the food offerings and the way it is served by the workers. When I got to the mall where this Sonic is located, I had no idea that they did not have an indoor dining area and accidentally walked into the kitchen through the door. It something new to find out that I needed to order on a billboard in the dining patio and wait for the server to bring the order out to me. I guess I learned something new on this day! After placing my order into the billboard, I got my order in about 10 minutes, which was efficient but had to wait for the young lady to process my order inside with my card - next time I will bring cash! When the young lady came out with the order on roller blades, I was amazed to watch her serve on roller blades - I guess I experienced something different and new in my life. I have never seen something like this establishment where one eats in the car, or patio, ordering into a billboard without the drive-thru and being serviced on roller blades. My girlfriend/wife, who was with me, was also amazed and surprised! When we got the burger, and fries, it was fresh, and good tasting - nothing special but a burger with buns, lettuce pickle and tomato and standard french fries However, the atmosphere of the outdoor dining area on a nice and warm day, being serviced in a new way, and friendly smile made it a great meal. After years of blasting commercials on TV, there is a finally one that's not an hour away. This is my first time going to a sonic and its definitely falling into the hype machine that In N out burger first had when it came up north from LA. The food was ok. It was nice to have tater tots as a change of pace instead of fries. What I really liked was the strawberry limeade. I wouldn't mind coming back here for a drink, especially when its 1/2 price happy hour 2-4pm every day. I can see why they done away with drive ins back in the 50's.
