I am sitting here in a pile of empty Sonic bags with a full belly. The line was long but the drive through went fast. They have Boston Valet guys directing traffic. I could have waited an hour for a stall so I could have a roller skating waitress bring the food but I don't do lines anywhere, let alone at a fast food restaurant. Here's the deal: 1. Chili Cheese Tots.- Excellent. Cheesy, lots of chili, eat fast before turns to mush. 2. Bacon Cheesburger Toaster - lettuce, tom., onion, large onion ring... Toasted buttered thick bread. It was good, sort of like Friendly's. 3. Banana Shake- delicious Caramel Shake - tasted like vanilla 4. Mozzarella stix- awesome 4. Steak and cheese breakfast burrito - very good (better than McD's) Overall, I want to go back for more drnks, Java Chillers, Slush's and a different sandwich. Lines that stretch (literally) for miles? Down Route 1? Wait times measured by the hour? For fast food? Hell to the no. Thank you. Since these are things I just do not do, added to the fact that I do not own a car, I avoided Sonic since it's infamous opening. I scoffed at the fooled who drove out to Peabody just for a stinking greasy burger or the novelty beverages. I rolled my eyes, I snickered. What a joke. Then, I found myself out in Saugus, on good ol' Route 1, driving a Zipcar, and figured that I had to see just what all of the hullbaloo was about. It being fairly empty on a Monday night, we were able to snag a drive-up ordering spot immediately. The employees were all ridiculously friendly, and our food came so fast it was borderline disturbing. The verdict? Suspicions of an over-hyped experience confirmed. Though the popcorn chicken was not as greasy as you'd expect, with big pieces of white meat chicken, it's still fried chicken raised who knows where and given who knows what as a diet. The peanut butter milkshake, however, was amazing: a thick, not sickly sweet, rich peanut-buttery treat. Despite this delightful dessert-drink, there is nothing at Sonic that would behoove me to drive out this way ever again solely for it's enjoyment. read more

Being from Texas, my husband and I have enjoyed eating at Sonic throughout our lives. After moving to Boston we were happy to discover that one of the two Sonic Drive-Ins in the state was just a mere 30 minute drive from our apartment in the city. Unfortunately, we will never make that trip again because last night we had a very frustrating experience at a Sonic Drive-In last night. We arrived around 8:30pm and made our order; my husband ordered the Spicy Southwest Loaded Burger with tater tots and a sweet tea, I ordered a number one, plain and dry with ketchup only with tater tots and a Cranberry Limeade. The best decision we made last night was to pay with cash because after we made our order we just waited... and waited.... and other cars around us came and left... and we just waited. Finally, at 9pm my husband pushed the call button and we were again greeted with, "Welcome to Sonic, may I take your order?" We inquired upon the status of our order and we were told that our order had just come up and it would be right out, so we waited... .and waited... Around 9:15pm my husband pushed the call button again so that we could tell them we were leaving. No one really seemed to care, and no one really even noticed that our uncomplicated and short order had been lost. As we were driving out of the Sonic parking lot a waiter on roller blades grabbed onto our bumper to accelerate himself to his destination--obviously not safe! We were frustrated, so we stopped in a nearby parking lot and called the store and asked to speak with a manager. My husband explained that we waited over half an hour and never received our food or any indication that our order was backed up, and that after tonight, we most likely will not be returning. The manager did not ask any questions nor did he really seem to care, he answered with, "Well, thank you for your impute sir, goodnight." I wish that I could give this Sonic less than one star. Only wanted an oreo blast so kind of hard to screw that up. Pulled up to the order window at the drive through line and the microphone wasn't working. There was a sign taped to it saying to pull up to the window (lol). After waiting behind 4 or 5 cars ordering/paying/recieving their order at the main window I pull up tell the guy at the window I want an oreo blast. He tells me they are out of oreo blasts.........I ask all blasts or just oreo?? He says they don't have any blasts right now!!! Yeah this is serious. For some odd reason I was possessed to order the chili cheese coney (extra long hot dog) - please, take it from me, DO NOT order it! Hot dog was funky nuclear mystery meat, cheese was sketchy, even though I knew I was getting fake cheese sauce, and the chili was nothing to write home about either. I didn't feel too hot after eating 3/4 of it....says a lot that I left some behind, I almost never do that. Ok so I finally came after all the hype died down...apparently it still hasn't. I drive by every weekend, dead in the morning and line down rt 1 at night. Still! In November! We visited the drive through, on a tuesday night, all of the stalls were full with a line. The drive through was empty. So ok, the food seemed a little expensive for fast food. $3.69 for a hamburger....it better be a good burger. It wasn't horrible, it was your standard fast food hamburger with tomato, onions, mustard and ketchup. Oh and this burger was wayyyy bigger than a standard fast food burger! The tots are just tots, I really wanted chili cheese ones, but today couldn't be a mega fat day, unforch! So the burger wasn't bad at all, really I would get it again. The other got a bacon something or other which looked good, on texas toast, but I tried a little..it tasted like a donut, I don't get it. The wait....the wait at the drive through for 2 burgers and tots was bad, the slowest fast food ever. It was almost 10 minutes of awkward waiting, watching the lasses skating out of the place, and the drive through girl just standing there, all awkward, looking. Awkward. To those of you that are unaware, Sonic is a chain fast food restaurant to which you pull up into a little car booth with your car, press a button to order, and your food gets delivered by a person on roller skates. I'm guessing theres a bit of a hype around the place because Sonic has been advertising on TV in the Massachusetts area (even on Massachusetts only channels like NESN) for years, despite not having a single restaurant within comfortable driving distance of the state. We came here because of the hype surrounding the opening of the first Massachusetts Sonic. The boys were very excited. Despite having been open for 3 weeks now, the line (around the block) is reminiscent of when IKEA first opened in Stoughton. In order to get a car booth we had to wait about an hour (for fast food?) I had a double bacon cheeseburger. While it tasted somewhat better than the likes of Burger King or McDonalds this isn't setting the bar particularly high, but I guess its supposed to be a fast food so it's a fair comparison. The size of the burger was fairly generous for the price - however - so I didn't feel like I had to eat again the whole day. (I'm a 6'3" 240lb male, for reference) The fries and onion rings were WEIRD. They had a powdered sugar taste to them and no salt at all. The onion rings reminded me of Belgian waffles, but with onions inside them. I ate them anyway, but my Fiancé was disgusted and gave me hers. My fiancé ordered two corn dogs (because she has a wheat allergy). We specifically asked for mustard, but didn't receive any. I pressed the red button again and asked for mustard and ketchup. A guy on roller blades came out with a fistful of ketchup packets, but still no mustard. At that point we gave up on the mustard. Let me add to this review that I don't like eating in cars. The seating position is such that there is a high risk of spilling stuff on either yourself or the car (which I did, ruining my white polo shirt). If I go again, I will elect to eat at their outdoor seating area instead. While we were waiting for our food in the car with the windows down (didn't want to waste gas, and leave the car running with AC on) we continually had cigarette smoke blowing in our windows from other inconsiderate asses eating there. It would be nice if the restaurant enforced the multiple "no smoking" signs. Either way. I didn't like it one little bit, and probably will not go voluntarily again. The boys - however - thought it was exciting (I guess because of the novelty of the drive up roller skate service) and were - while annoyed at first - unphased by the cigarette smoke, hour long wait, odd powdered sugar tasting fried stuff and eating in the car. They seemed convinced our bad experiences were a one time occurrence and would love to go back. I - myself - feel that while we probably had a series of unfortunate problems, going back just isn't worth it. read more

I Went through the drive-thru and when I checked the bag Half of my order was missing. I had already gotten on the highway and would've had to drive 17 miles up the highway to turn around and go back so I didn't. I Tried calling this location for OVER A WEEK and no one ever answers the phone. There is no way to contact the store manager or that location and after speaking to the corporate office, they refuse to resolve the issue unless they speak with the manager of the location. It's been OVER A MONTH and I still have not been able to get ahold of ANYONE at the Peabody, MA location. read more

Went on September 1st, and the servers were on roller skates or blades. This was an outing for our teen to get her road hours towards her driver's license, so I thought dealing with traffic and bumper to bumper traffic was a good experience (since she tends to gun it at start). It was a nice trip, and her first Sonic experience. The chili cheese coneys are pretty good. We weren't as impressed with the chili cheese tots, but... the strawberry shake is amazing!!! Big chunks of fruit that even get stuck in the straw. There was real fruit in the berry something or other cooler that the teen got, too. The dad's chocolate shake didn't last long enough to find out if he even tasted it. Most people were really nice. Our server was sort of still learning how to communicate (but I can totally empathize with that!!!!) so that was a little rough, but we tipped her well anyway. She'll get the hang of it. There were quite a few disgruntled folks who were leaving and would shout out as we were waiting in line, "It's not worth it!" -- but we didn't care. It was a tiny adventure and the teen was curious. The loudspeaker ordering system... hmmm... it seems to still have some issues. When I visited Sonic in Texas, it was really straightforward and the folks inside heard us fine. Here, the one time we've gone, there were a lot of troubles. I think some of it is just new stuff that needs to get smoothed out. It's fast food, so eh. But, as fast food goes, it's pretty cool. I just dream of a day when fast food includes a lot of low-impact foods and serving methods. As trash goes, it was very well done, not a lot of extra paper or plastic (the upside of when they don't give you the plastic utensils you would like to use to eat the chili cheese tots!). First time customer, will never go back! Worst customer service I've ever had! Terrible food! We were travelers, passing through Massachusetts at night and stopped in at the Peabody Sonic because of Sonic's great reputation. NOT AT THIS LOCATION! First off, we waited about 10 minutes for the customer in front of us to get his order in. The young guy at the register was obviously not trained properly and kept leaving the counter to go to the back with questions. My friend ordered a grilled chicken wrap. She couldn't eat it. The quality was *very* bad. Rubbery texture, and did not taste like chicken. She described it as "rubbery, tasteless, and inedible". I tasted it and completely agreed. It was something processed and almost plastic! I ordered the breakfast burrito that came with bacon or sausage. I asked to have it without the meat. Cashier said that it couldn't be ordered without the meat. I said "Are you sure? I have ordered things without meat in many places." He said I'm pretty sure you can't order without the meat". I said, "That leaves us some room for debate, may I see the manager?" Manager (?) guy with a headset, comes out.....he shows cashier the button where you press "breakfast burrito with sausage...then...."NO MEAT" button. Looks at the cashier and says, "Come on, man....it's common sense!" Ouch! Clearly, the embarrassed cashier has not been trained and the manager (?) has no desire to train him because he recedes back into the bowels of the kitchen. So my order, something as simple as a cheese and egg burrito (right?) you'd think couldn't go wrong. But it did...it was extremely salty! Way too salty! But I was hungry and tired from driving. I needed the energy, so I ate it. Back to my friend's inedible chicken wrap.....She walked back to the register after taking one bite and told him that it just wasn't right, that she wanted to order something else and have a refund. Cashier said to throw it out and he'd have manager come out. He put in the order for a burger that she asked for. Manager never came out. Server delivers the hamburger. She asked a second time for a manager. He said that he would get him. So the server disappeared and the manager NEVER came out......again....after two requests! I looked through the glass windows, and saw the employees sitting around in the back, doing nothing until patrons came in. They were chatting and tying their shoes. My friend didn't want to cause a fuss. She ended up paying for the inedible chicken wrap anyway, which was around $5.00. No manager came out to talk with us. We were too irked to wait. We left very disappointed. I will never go to another Sonic again. It literally left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I did a bad job. I did a bad, bad job. One night, it was raining, dark. I was at an event for Nazareth Academy over in Wakefield (an academy of excellence for young women). There was Champagne there. I'm not allowed to drink Champagne in public since the "incident" of 2003. But drink it I did. Suddenly, I found myself in Lisa G's car, heading to sonic. There was a commotion and confusion- and in a drunken stupor- I found myself suddenly with 5...count them F-I-V-E combo meals in my lap. That's right....The champagne caused me to order enough food for an above average family. The good news is- I didn't eat it all. But from what I remember- the burgers were excellent and the chicken was delish! However...nothing...NOTHING....compared to what else I found in that bag! Little pieces of golden heaven- that's right ladies and gentlemen- TOTS! I disregarded the rest of the $37 bucks worth of yum yums and put all the effort I had left in the tots. Thank GOD- I passed out before I was done, woke up at 5AM, and tripped over a foot-long hot dog and a french toast stick gone rogue. The massacre was over.... The tater tots themselves are worth the drive. If you are going to eat artery clogging fast food you may as well do two things: 1) Be too drunk to be responsible for your own actions. 2) go somewhere with tots! Where to begin... A friend and I sat at a drive up bay for 25 minutes with the button "to order" blinking for 25 minutes. We asked one of the food runners if it was broke, but waited another 5 minutes in the bay talking to each other and listening to music. We reversed and moved to nieghboring bay, and waited 10 more minutes with no response. I decided to walk in and place our order, or we would have sat there forever. The employee inside wasn't very concerned with my complaint of waiting so long and proceeded to take my order. I asked to speak to the manager, so he went in the back to retrieve him. The "Managers" come out; one of them wearing a sonic shirt and another accompanying him with no Sonic apparel. I asked " Are you both managers?". They replied "yes", so I proceeded to explain the issues to both of them They gave my friend and I two free cherry limeade vouchers and apologized for the poor service (but had no explanation as to why things took so long with the ordering). I went back to my car and waited for the food, which arrived shortly after. We ordered a few cheeseburgers and chili dogs... the only difference between our orders was that one cheeseburger had mayo, ketchup and mustard compared to mine with just mayo and ketchup. After the excitement of finally receiving the order mine was just ketchup and NO CHEESE. Hot headed at this point, I went back inside to report that this was wrong. After requesting the manager again A THIRD MANAGER CAME OUT. I explained everything to them again and told them exactly what was wrong and how I wanted what the picture showed (for the cheeseburger) just with no mustard. She came out a few minutes later and said I'm sorry here is a new sandwhich for you. Long story short, they forgot the tomatoes this time (whatever at this point, right?) Summary: Absolutely horrid service (worst iv ever had), very unprofessional, poor quality food, lack of urgency or willing to correct, and overall just not very concerned of your experience at Sonic ONE quality MANAGER can replace three inexperienced and low quality Managers. It shouldn't take three people to do one job (and clearly they couldn't even do that correctly). The Owner/franchisee is wasting his money here with inefficient and very poor service both in the front and back of the house Also, at no point did any of the three managers say "Hi I'm (so and so), what can I help you with". It was more so a " so whats the issue" type of conversation After I requested a full refund, the manager (that wasn't even wearing a sonic shirt or anything else to indicate he worked there) informed me that he could give me a discount on my order and proceeded to refund me half ($13.00) Just stay away from this location, and if the owner doesn't do anything quickly, these kids will run this place into the ground If I could give less than 1 star I would. It really was what I expected. Fast food you eat in your car. Wait you do that for most fast food. Boyfriend and I have been there 2x since its opening. The first time for breakfast on a Saturday about a month after it opened. We had no problem getting a spot. Then we went on a Saturday night- GD chaos. Don't go late night Saturdays! It transformed in a teen hangout with no structure for the people trying to get food. The food really is average. Texas toast was not toasty. Their breakfast burrito is good- surpasses McD's sausage burritos. The kids corn dog was 'tasty' but really burned. The jalapeno poppers are pretty good, but I was overall more excited that it is on the menu. The best is the tater tot side with chili and onions. That really is addicting and I find acceptable for breakfast. This really is a 3 star place but I up it to a 4 because of the lime rickys. So addicting. That really was the reason why we waited 45 minutes on that Saturday night. Damn I wanted a lime Ricky and I was going to get one. I give the people there credit for dealing with the chaos there. But I honestly think that part if that chaos could be prevented. If you decide not to eat in your car you have to wait under a pavilion. Now there needs to be organized lines and signs directing people to wait and where and where not to stand so you are not in the way if the skaters. When we went we witnessed do many people cutting the line and as a result getting yelled at since the line is outside the pavilion so it looks like people are just hanging out waiting for food on the brick wall instead of in line. Yes, the location is a little strange - all the way in Peabody. Route 1 is a scary place, and getting in and out on the road can be scary! If you miss Sonic, you'd probably have to loop far around just to get back to it. Yes, the commercials and novelty of Sonic do make it more appealing than it really is. C'mon. Ordering at your own stations and having your order rollerbladed right to your drivers door does seem pretty cool. But let's get real. The food is pretty standard - not the best I've ever had, yet not the the worst thing on the planet. Menu items range from burgers, to hot dogs with different toppings (Coney Island, Chicago, All American), chicken tenders and breakfast items all day long. Ah, and their drinks are pretty bomb-dot-com. What's even better? The happy hour every day between 2pm-5pm has the drinks and slushes for half off! Lemonberry is probably the best slush they have with real frozen strawberry chunks in it. Their Limeades are pretty awesome as well. There are tons of flavors that you can customize and mix and match for yourself. I don't see myself going completely out of the way for Sonic, though if I'm driving through Route 1, I'll definitely be stoppping in for a Lemonberry Slush and continue on, content with my decision. read more

I got a burger here the other evening and there was nothing special about it. Which is upsetting given the hype. But I felt the same way about my first animal style burger that I ordered at "In and Out" a while back while traveling in Arizona. The Sonic burger tasted like a mix between McDonalds and Burger King-- the latter's toppings on the former's meat patty. I think there is a reason why McDonald's and Burger King are international chains and these other ones are regional. They can hack it in their own markets but just don't have wide spread appeal. Don't give these slimeballs your hard earned money. They couldn't get an order correct if their life depends on it. It's not like they don't know what the order is. As you order, it's on the screen. No exaggeration, last SEVERAL visits, all wrong. Food is cold and BAD. My kid likes the slushes, so against my better judgment, I tried again. This time the only reason I went there was for corn dogs for my kid. They put all the 'food' in a tiny bag so it was full to the top. I'd have had to dump the whole bag out to verify right in the drive through lane. The bathroom was out of service, but the side one was open smelling like a zoo. There was one table eating so I figured it would take a bit for everything fresh. I came back and the food was at the table. Cooked ahead and cold. We were on a schedule so we didn't have time to have them try again. Like Dustin R. I am one of the few transplants who grew up with Sonic, so I was thrilled the day I spotted the sign on Rte. 1 that announced Sonic was coming. I eagerly watched each day as the construction progressed. Now of course I can only get in there at odd times due to the insane lines. This is torture since I live very close by and have to pass it to go pretty much any where. Sonic Rule #1: It is more about the drinks and the treats than the food, though the food can be pretty good also, especially the onion rings! I have been at least 3 times already. The servers have been very cheerful and friendly (definitely unlike most fast food places here, especially McDonald's which always seems to have the rudest and incompetent staff). I haven't been thrilled with the experience yet, but I blame that on it being so new and the crazy crowds. More than once has my food arrived very quickly but ice cold. You can't make burgers up that far in advance to combat the crowds. At least my onion rings and chilli cheese tots were warm! The onion rings are the best! The burgers are really good when prepared correctly and served hot. They are flamed broiled thin patties, served with fresh lettuce, tomatoe and onions. For me it is all about the limeaids! Strawberry is the best, and cherry is pretty great as well. Then there are all the varieties of slushes, cream slushes, shakes, and blasts as well as sundaes and banna splits, hot fudge cake.....This is what Sonic is all about! I am sure once the newness wears off a bit and the crowds get down to a normal level, the service and food quality will improve tremedously. I have to cut these folks some slack because they must be working top speed for hours and hours on end because I have seen the lines wrapping all the way around Dearborn Road and down Rte. 1 for hours on end. So I went there again and tried a couple new things. Apple Limeaid: I thought this was very yummy. Just enough sweet, but not overpowering. Chicken Wrap: (Cue the 'Wa Wa' sound) Not good. Some people get excited about their first born, buying a new HD TV, or getting out of a city for a weekend. I, on the other hand, get excited about new fast food places opening within 20 minutes of where I live because, well, I'm fat. So when I heard about Sonic opening up in Peabody, I had to A. Find where it is, and B. Go there. I made my trek early, around 11:00, to get there for 11:30, wait in line for 30 minutes, and eat my meal at noon. Some people plan vacations, I plan meal times. As I crept closer to the window, music blasting, excitement and hamburgers filling the air, I realized I have absolutely no clue what Sonic's main menu items are. I saw a menu around the corner so I felt relieved that I could wait and analyze the menu for the perfect decision. But they also had the sprinklers on, which I'm only aware of because after I moved around the corner where the first menu was, I was promptly sprayed and had to close my window. This was in combination with a woman in black standing in front of my car waving frantically for me to pull ahead as 15 cars vied for a sacred position in the Sonic parking lot. I finally get to the menu, the Mecca as proclaimed by friends who had traveled to far distant lands to find a Sonic. Stories of food, shakes, tots filled my mind as I ordered. "I'll take a Super Sonic Cheeseburger," I proclaimed. "WHAT!?!" yelled the voice in the box. I had to move up, which for some reason the drive thru window was actually slightly confusing. I got some tots, a Chili wrap contraption, and a chicken sandwich. I paid my fare, and then tore into the bag like a badger on steroids (or rabies). The cheeseburger was huge, the chili wrap was sloppy, the fries were soggy... ...ladies and gentlemen, it was fast food. read more

I was disgusted the first time I went in to this sonic. It was a Sunday night and I'm not sure what was going on in the back but my boyfriend and I waited 30 minutes for just drinks/shakes. No food. As we waited I used the restroom just to wash my hands and it was disgusting. They should have put an out of order sign and closed it until it was able to be cleaned. We got our money back and left once we realized the time. My second time there was similar. Long waits in the drive thru. I just can't bring myself back. 5 stars and as expected for #400!!!!! now, i wont lie, i love sonic, i have always loved sonic and i know how to order at sonic, no burgers, heavy on the apps and drinks, and you too will love sonic just as much as i I finally made it up to rt 1 peabody to get to the 1st new england sonic. now when this place came to town it was insane, i knew it, you knew, the whole dam 617 knew it, but yet the whole 617/781/508/978 was there so things were bound to get sticky ie hour wait to get in line! when I went, last week, no. worries. at. all. I drove right in at lunch time and got a primo out of the direct sunlight carspot stall. I could only imagine when the line was 3 miles long! eesh. I ordered a few items, breakfast toaster with bacon(served all day, natch!) and a limeade to start. It was great. nice toast, crispy bacon, yum yum! the limeade was really good too, tart, zesty, fizzy. only problem i had was that i drank it up and there was none left. I picked up a chicago dog for a friend i was meeting, he had been to sonic but didnt want to commit to my adventure. he said the chi-dog was good, with some spice and wasnt expecting it to be so, but enjoyed it. I ordered this item only after i was done with my lunch along with a rootbeer float to enjoy on the drive. I can totally dig the double bev. it was good, however, i think they used too much dreamy ice cream, not enough rootbeer, sodajerks (not just plan old jerks) take note. the cost was reasonable and as i was saying,having no wait makes a happy man. plus, you cant beat food served via rollerskates. read more

I don't usually review fast food, because, WTH, it's fast food. Sonic is new to the area though, so I wanted to share my impressions. Stopped at Sonic on my way home from a Boston Blazers lacrosse game this weekend. Pulled into the drive through line at about 10:30. Then I sat. And I sat. Then I sat some more. So, after 20 minutes in line, I was rewarded with a "toaster" sandwich, that was more like a "sogster" sandwich, and a lukewarm hot dog. Flavor was OK, though I was still burping onion 12 hours later. The second star is for having a very diverse menu, including breakfast items all day. read more

TWO WORDS: "CHERRY LIMEADE"!! Ya know, it would be even better if they didn't fill the cup to the rim with saved ice so you take about 8 sips of your Cherry Limeade and you're totally disappointed becasue it's all gone and you have nothing left but, ice, cherries, limes and disappoinment! Damn! The only other things I have ever ordered from here are tater tots, french fries and chicken strips..it's usually hit or miss! Sometimes they are really good or just "okay"...The fries are not good at all..yikes. Was there on Friday night and on the sign it says: "COMING SOON NEW DINING ROOM!!" So slow, slowest Sonic I've been to. Plus, they don't even skate to your car despite life sized decals on the doors showing carhops on skates. Seems like a minimal effort place and I can't help but question the management quality. Most Sonics are a fun place to visit, this one....not so much. read more
