So slow, slowest Sonic I've been to. Plus, they don't even skate to your car despite life sized decals on the doors showing carhops on skates. Never let it be said that I have ever missed living in East Texas. it was hot, run-down, boring, culturally and intellectually backwards and hot. They did have good fishing, and they did have some damn fine fast food in the form of the Sonic Drive-In. I missed the double jalapeno burger, bursting with it's spicy, mustardy goodness and greezy wet-foil taste. I missed tater tots instead of fries, because tater tots are tater tots. Enough said. Well, after waiting in line for five hours (standing, mind you), we spent $30 on food and everything was delivered cold. Not luke-warm, but cold. Also, we got one of the blizzard things and it was so melted we could have drank it. Mmm... and they forgot our marinara sauce for the mozzarella sticks and the honey mustard for the chicken. Why even bother asking if we wanted it? Cherry lime-aid was good. Won't be back for a while until it's not so busy and we can get some hot food. I should first confess the true purpose of our trip to Sonic: it wasn't for the food. My dude and I had rented an Escalade that day to help shuttle guests to a friend's wedding. Turns out it wasn't really needed, so our big pimpin' fantasies were left unsatisfied. After the wedding, we decided to go for a joy ride and needed a destination far enough to enjoy all the deluxe features of the car (a la seat warmers/individualized air conditioning/XM radio, auto-you-name-it). I would not recommend a trip to Sonic for any other purpose. The food was close to the worst fast-food I've ever had. Fries were undercooked. Burger was so overcooked, IT apologized. The chicken wrap was a wet, soggy mess. The chocolate shake I had was sickly sweet and unmixed. The Blast (soft serve and mix-ins) was no different than what you could get a Micky D's right down the street. Other than the fun of ordering from your own car stall and having the food delivered to you by a car-hop, there is nothing about this place worth visiting. Yay! Sonic is here!! Finally! I went to Sonic yesterday, on opening day (the day I actually posted my first review. So soooorrrryyy yelp that I didn't have time to finish it...) I had my favorite meal: the Chicken Toaster!!! It was amazing, oh course. I had it with tots, which was a first. the WORST customer service ive experienced in my life. i ordered two slushies and some food, then when the food came i only received one slushy and the food so i asked the car hop girl (brown hair, glasses- idk her name) if i could get my other slushy and she looked at me like i had two heads! then later, she cane back and gave me a slushy with NO FLAVORING! i pushed the order button and explained my situation, and the kid was rude but did deliver my slushy after 10 mins of waiting. he gave me the slushy, and i asked for a straw and he said "yea one sec" and never came back. SO, i pushed the button THREE TIMES AND GOT NO RESPONSE. at this point, im completely fed up, there is no one at the sonic, and i cant go inside because the lobby is closed. so i drive to the drive thru and i explain my situation, and the lady was very nice and apologized and gave me my straw. food is dry and awful btw read more

I waited patiently, for the better part of 2010, for the lines at Sonic to die down. I mean, how many cherry limeaids can you people drink? I'd built up all of this anticipation and expectation, and this is likely why my Sonic Experience was lackluster. "Are we really going to eat in the car," my husband asked, "and do they really bring your food on rollerskates? Is this 1952?" I just laughed, "Just wait," I advised. "They have tater tots. You can't beat that." He gave me the stink eye. We ordered a Sonic burger, popcorn chicken and two orders of tater tots. "So we just sit here and wait," he asked. "Yeah, we'd be doing the same in a drive thru." "Don't you think it's weird to expect people to eat in their cars?" "No. I mean, you do it anyway. How many times have you started eating tacos before we got home?" "True." The girl wheels herself over to the car and starts handing us our food when I realize that the rental car we're in for the weekend really isn't conducive to eating in it. And that's when it all really started going downhill. The tater tots weren't even crispy. The toppings on my burger fell off into the microwave bag or whatever it's served in so I was left with mediocrity at best. But at least the soda would be the saving grace, right? Sure. Pure garbage. I ordered the 1/4 lb bacon cheeseburger on the toasted bread (#4 I think). It was cold, no taste, no 1/4 lb and NFG. The Sweet Potato tater totes tasted like a soggy fried candy. About the worst Sonic I've tried. Came here for lunch today, it was close. Had the #7, chili cheese foot long. The skimped on everything but the hot dog and bun. Paid about double what it was worth. The cheese tater tots were good as always, but come on 70 cents to melt a slice of cheese over the tater tots!!!! Will not return to this location for any reason!! New owners, new management or a total loss fire would all be an improvement. Find anything else to eat but avoid this place!! read more

We stayed in Peabody for Halloween weekend because it's close to Salem. Our shuttle to Salem drove by this Sonic, and we were so excited to go... even though I vaguely remembered the food being so-so, it's a fun experience. I got a corn dog, cheese Tots, and a chocolate shake. My husband got a bacon cheeseburger, chili cheese Tots, and a cherry slush. My food was great. You can't really screw up a corn dog though, which is kind of why I got it. The shake was yummy, though very small. My husband's tots were good (I'm assuming, he nommed them really quickly). His burger, however, was not hot at all. The bun was actually almost cold, and the meat was room temperature. Aside from that, he said it was yummy. The slush was made with local water, which all seems to have a chlorinated taste (our hotel water had the same problem). This made it pretty undrinkable. The service was quick, friendly, and accurate. He helped me with my credit card when the machine was being mean to me. He was dressed up, too! (It was Halloween, of course). I once traveled 105 miles to Sonic from San Francisco to Roseville, CA, just to find out the "sit down" Sonic was really a few patio tables next to a gas pump as that Sonic was a gas station/Sonic combo. Don't get me wrong, breathing in the premium unleaded gas exhaust didn't slow me down from trying and enjoying everything on the menu like it was the Costco free sample section, but you would think I would like the experience of this new "real" Sonic much better than that initial trip to Sonic in Roseville, CA. While in college in Massachusetts, I would always see the Sonic commercials and wonder "Where is there a Sonic?," only to find out that there was not a Sonic for hundreds of miles. How couldn't anyone be curious about Sonic especially from the Sonic commercials of always two happy people in a car eating tater tots or something else and discussing world issues. Last year a Sonic finally opened in Massachusetts. I still like Sonic but I didn't enjoy the Sonic experience at the Peabody location as much as the first time I inhaled the Fritos chili cheese wrap, tater tots, and gas pump exhaust at the Sonic in Roseville, CA. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy their tater tots and corn dog, but the experience left me thinking critically of their business model and whether or not I should have tipped the carhopper delivering my food to the car on roller skates. When I went to the Peabody Sonic, I ordered a corn dog, mozzarella sticks, and tater tots for $6.67. I was surprised by the price, but while I waited for my meal to be delivered to the car, I looked at the menu prices. The tater tots were $1, the corn dog was $1.69, but the mozzarella sticks were $3.59. It just seemed kind of out of whack as I could get two corn dogs for the price of several mozzarella sticks. Then still kind of surprised by the price, I handed the carhopper a $7 bill, and he asked if I needed change. Tipping at a fast food restaurant, this is a new concept to me. Am I suppose to tip the carhopper 15-20%, how does this work? If they are getting paid like waiters, I certainly don't want to stiff him on a tip or are they paid the standard wage without a dependence on tips? Ultimately, I left satisfied by the fast food fix, but at the same time as I passed Wendy's on the way to highway, I thought about how I could have probably done better at Wendy's ordering off the dollar menu from a counter and avoiding any confusion, while satisfying the occasional fast food fix. read more

The cherry limeade is pretty much the best thing on the menu. I drank a 40oz of it the last and only time I've went. The corn dogs are good too. The burgers, fries, and mozzarella sticks are not. Even under circumstances that mirror "Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle"...and that's pretty bad. Count me as one of the suckers that waited over an hour in my car to wind around the block and get into Sonic. Was it worth it, hardly! The food was absolutely nothing to write home about. I ordered chili cheese dog with tater tots, a sonic burger and soda. The hot dog was long, however, only about an 1/8" in diameter, if you're looking for a filling large hot dog look elsewhere, the burger was average at best. I've had much better at other fast food joints such as Wendys. The highlight of my visit was the peanut butter fudge sundae for short money that I ordered just before leaving and the cute waitress that brought it over on her roller skates. Like many others, for years i watched the sonic commercials shown on the USA network during Law & Order marathons, and i waited, patiently, for there to be a Sonic location closer than Pennsylvania. My interest was so strong, i would actively seek out Sonic locations while on vacation in the midwest and California. I was one of the first to spread the word when news broke that a location in Peabody was planned, shouting my excitement for all to hear. I mention all of this in an attempt to quantify the tremendous anticipation i had for the opening of this particular Sonic. Why then, have i only been to this location once? Letdown. Not that the food was bad, or the carhops did something egregious, but I've become accustomed to it - the experience is no longer a novelty, and i'm not willing to drive out of my way for it. It was poorly packaged and our three orders got mixed up thanks to scott who was also very rude and short with us . whilst taking the order he had an attitude and seemed to be rushing us. As someone who had never been to a sonic before i ordered a blue slushie thinking it would be easy as most places have a blue coloured slushie. He said very rudely blue is not a flavor. Why do I always have to ask for ketchup. Why when you ask for it, it takes 15 minutes. Can I ask what a regular slush is I ordered a watermelon and a cranberry slush and The car hop said I had a regular slush. Sonic you have some of the most incompetent employees. This is the most disgusting, disrespectful, food place that I have ever been to. I have never been so disrespected as a customer in my entire life than at this sonic. I started inside and they told me I had to go outside to order because they didn't want to have to "clean the inside again" so I went outside to order and then they proceeded to tell me I could not use my card, after they told me inside I could use it outside. So I got cash, ordered my food and asked the employee if I could get a straw and a fork because I did not get one and she said I'm sorry I don't have the time to go back inside again so I said what am I supposed to do and she said "usually people leave with this food at this point" excuse me?? It's her job to get me what I need to eat, I am parked in the places where you stay and eat your food and she's telling me to leave so she doesn't have to go inside for me again? You would think the manager would be upset over her saying that but when I went inside to get the things myself the manager told me that there's no way that her employee would say that and continue to raise her voice at me. This place is horrible and disgusting and the food is almost worse than the service. Such a waste of time. read more

This Sonic is so out of place here. Being a lover of all things Southern, I have to comment on this chain's Northeastern presence. The burgers are great. Hefty, solid burgers. I enjoy the offering of Tater tots, too. The service is pretty quick, but....the experience is lacking here. I just love the ones in the South.. the animation, the skates, everything seems more authentic. It just feels contrived up here. Not sure why, but that's it. Whew! I finally made it to Sonic! I decided to go on a Friday evening on my way up to Maine. There wasn't even a line! So I pulled up and was immediately overwhelmed by the menu. I ended up with the Chicken Toaster Club (minus bacon and tomato) with ranch, the tater tots, and a cherry limeade (I get up to the speaker and I'm like "uh, what's that drink with cherry that everyone loves?" "cherry limeade" "oh, right, I'll have one of those"). Since I was driving, I couldn't really enjoy my meal to the fullest (too busy trying to avoid getting covered in sauce). The sandwich tasted good, but when I got to the gas station and could see it in the light, I noticed that the lettuce was absolutely wilted and had a brownish tinge (ick!). Oh well, I just took it off and finished my sandwich (I will just order it sans lettuce next time). The tater tots were amazing. So crispy and puffy, yum! I was in the area by accident - really - and upon looking at one of my location apps on my phone, I realized that Sonic was nearby; too nearby to skip out on. And about twenty minutes later, I had lost my Sonic virginity. All in the name of good, fattening, ice cream. Delivered to my vehicle by a sixteen-year-old boy on skates. Yes, I know what you are thinking, but trust me - no sixteen-year-old boy ever waited on me on rollerskates before. I really wanted to get one of those drinks that I heard about on the commercials - the ones where there are something like two thousand different combinations of ingredients - but I was so baffled by the menu in general that I finally decided on an ice cream sundae of sorts. I still don't quite know what was in it, but it was pretty awesome. And gave me a sugar high for about three hours. Bonus? I am not sure I would go back to Sonic regularly, mostly because I can't see myself making the trek to get fast food - even if said fast food has selections like tater tots and sundaes. However, for those who have looked forward to finally trying Sonic after being taunted by the commercials that unfairly aired in the Northeast when Sonics were nowhere nearby, I would definitely recommend going once. First of all, let me just say, expect to wait. Previous reviewers wrote in that it was really busy at whatever time they went as being "not cool." Well, thats what happens when the entire New England area has been anticipating the arrival of Sonic. Again, expect to wait. I lived in San Antonio for a year and while I was there Sonic became my favorite outside of Texas fast food chain (Bill Miller BBQ and Whataburger are specific to Texas). It's even better than I remembered. Their drinks are to die for. I always get a Cherry Coke which is their version - a little grenadine and a cherry. It's that attention to detail - thanks sonic! Also, unlike other fast food places in the area, Sonic serves breakfast ALL DAY. That's right. ALL DAY. And they're open almost 24 hours a day. When I went, and it was busy, it was organized. They were incredibly smart to get Boston Valet to direct people. Despite the craziness and, I am sure based on these reviews, "cranky because I had to wait" patrons, the servers were friendly. And newsflash folks, they do not rollerskate in Texas. Consider yourselves even luckier. Also they don't have a drive thru in Texas. They're all pull in stations. To me, the pull in stations are genius. You drive up and do your entire transaction right there down to swipping your credit card. You can decide what you want and take your time. No more of that last minute pressure that the drive thru gives you. Ponder. You've got time, baby. Then you just sit and wait for someone to walk or skate it out to you. I advise you to try the Frito Pie - which is something us northerners don't have in our recipe boxes. It's beef, cheese, fritos. That's it. And it's delicious. It's better quality too. Speaking of the food, did I mention that their menu is huge? No? Well it is! Burgers! Chicken! Salads! Bananas! Ice cream! MASSIVE drinks! Breakfast burritos! Corn dogs! We had been driving for three hours by the time we got here. We needed to stretch our legs...but did we sit inside? Nope. Used the bathroom, sure, but we used the drive-in. When the bf told me to look up Sonic Drive-In locations I thought "surely he means Drive-thru." Nope. This is the Sonic experience. Coming from Puerto Rico where we have a limited number of American chains and franchises (and driving space for that matter), I was fascinated by this place. You drive in. You order. Your food is brought to you. And you chill in your car. How awesome is that! Pretty sweet if you ask me. The food is pretty decent for fast-food. I had a double cheeseburger with fries which I happily ate. I didn't know any better and just ordered a coke with my meal. The bf was got a dog with fries (you could also get tater tots which I bet are good too!) with a cherry limeade. Apparently part of the Sonic experience is the drive-in feature and their shakes and flavored sodas. Now I know for next time. If there is a next time. Which let's face it next time will be the next time I go to Maine or New Hampshire but that might not be until the ski season when we're driving up or down at obscene hours. My first and last time at this place. Wow my order was missing two items from my meal. I brought it up to the girl inside and she contradicted me 3 times about my missing items. I asked her to please refund me back for the order and she can keep it. She acted like she didn't care or didn't understand what I was saying. Second trip in less than a week and I could not be more pleased. This time we got just snacks as planned and they were worth it. We got the Ched R Poppers and Taters which were both amazing. The Ched R Poppers as they are called on the menu are served with buttermilk ranch dressing and are so good. They definitely have a kick to them but because the cheese is so melty and complimented by the Ranch they are smooth and tasty and trust me all you need is the 4 because they are huge! For a drink I stuck with the limeade family but opted for a Cranberry version and am so pleased. The wait today was only 10 mins from lot to stall and only 5 mins after that. The waiter was awesome again and the staff is more than always friendly. Go here! You won't be disappointed! read more

I was stoked to be in the area today and finally visit this wonderous place that has been bombarding us with commercials for delicious cheap items for years and years, taunting and teasing our tastebuds with magical items like slushies and chillers... ahhh popping my Sonic cherry feels oh-so-good 8) We waited a half hour for the drive through at 4:30 on a Sunday for three small items- really not too happy about it, although thanks to Yelp we were prepared-, so hopefully as the novelty wears off, things go more quickly and smoothly (the drive through lady took about 2 minutes to give us our change, not sure why it needed to take that long). The Strawberry Limeade Sonic Chiller I got was soooo craveworthy, and the tots were crisp, salty, and hit the spot as a nice afternoon snack (note: the large really isn't that large). IMO the tots were good but not worth going out of your way for, but the chiller was fab and I'd definitely make a stop here just for it (or any of their drinks) if I were in the neighborhood, for sure a unique item that's hard to find anywhere else. read more

Can't believe I was at Sonic and didn't get a shake/drink. Why it's located on a highway in Peabody? Who knows. It sucks if you're driving on the opposite side and realize that you have to go all the way around just to get there. Can't believe I didn't try the tots either. The fries were plain and not so good. My husband and I drove cross country in 2008 and the family we stayed with in New Mexico suggested that we stop at Sonic for breakfast. Neither of us had ever been to a Sonic so we stopped in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico and had a surprisingly delicious breakfast. Cut to 2011. Neither of us wanted to make breakfast so I suggested we go try the Sonic that opened in Peabody. We each got a breakfast sandwich on the thick toast, his with sausage, mine with ham, and we both got tater tots. I ordered a strawberry limeade, he got the cherry limeade. First, our bread was not remotely toasted. You could tell that it had been started toasting, but probably taken off after about 12 seconds. It was barely browned. Basically we were eating our sandwiches off greasy bread with butter. Next, the sausage on husband's sandwich was about half the size of the bread. The tots were absolutely doused in salt. I think they may have actually been the saltiest thing I've ever eaten. The limeades were 3/4 ice so we got about 2 sips out of them, which wasn't very helpful with the super-salty situation we had going on. Overall, I was very disappointed, but I guess that's what we get for getting fast food for breakfast. Our delicious breakfast adventure in Truth or Consequences must have been an anomoly. After flying for 8 hours i was just really thirsty and needed a drink. I asked my daughter to stop and i would buy my favorite drink, cranberry limeade cut in half with unsweet tea. This location $4.19. They still didnt know how to make it and i even pointed out on their own menu that cranberry limeades are their own signature drinks. No need to upcharge. This location was pure disappointment. Ordered the Spicy Chicken tender dinner. When we got the meal the thing was unbelievably bad. Apparently dinner means snack. By tenders they meant nuggets, the tots were cold and the onion ring was missing. Apparently asking for our onion ring was a burden on them because we got attitude when we pushed the button again. After a few minutes they brought us out our single onion ring. It was the only hot piece of food we ate. $8 terribly spent and we will never return. I'm a big fan of Sonic, just not this one. The food and drinks are regularly sub-par, often come out in dirty cups, and the service is abysmally slow. Right now I'm sitting in a car stall, going on 45 minutes waiting for my slush. Worst. Sonic. Ever. read more
