Sonic is one of those places that always hits the spot when you're craving classic drive-in food. We usually order the cheeseburgers with jalapeños, and they never disappoint. The burgers are juicy, the jalapeños add just the right amount of tang and heat, and everything tastes fresh. The corn dogs deserve their own shoutout. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect whether you're grabbing a quick lunch or a snack. They're always a favorite in our car. But if you've never tried the Ocean Water, you're missing out. It's refreshing, a little nostalgic, and somehow tastes even better on a warm Kapolei afternoon. It's become a must-order every visit. The only downside right now is the wait time, but honestly, that's just because it's the newest spot in town and everyone wants to check it out. Finally had a chance to grab food here. First time that the cars weren't lined up on the street, at the same time it shows how popular Sonic is and how good their food is. We ordered our food at the drive thru, we would've preferred parking at the stall and having a server on skates come out but all the stalls were taken. Oh well next time. Okay, Sonic... you won me over. On this visit, the line wasn't as brutally long as previous experiences, we only waited a short while before we were able to enjoy the full drive-in experience. It was fun watching the team members skating around and taking care of guests who were enjoying their meals from their cars. That classic Sonic experience definitely adds to the charm. I also noticed some improvements to the organization of lining up for the patio area with the use of a little maze, making it easier to line up at the ordering kiosk if you'd rather park and enjoy your meal outside. The team member who took my order was lovely and polite, and the person who brought out my food was just as friendly. I ordered the All-American Style Hot Dog with tater tots, a strawberry lemonade, and a side of chicken bites. Everything was delicious and kept me fueled through a long day of running errands. One small observation: I noticed a team member skate into the women's restroom while still wearing their service apron. From a food safety perspective, this presents a cross-contamination concern and would make for a good coaching opportunity. It's a minor detail, but an important one. I totally enjoyed my first time here. The craze has died down a little so getting service is so much faster. It only took me 5 minutes to go through the drive through. I had a double smash burger, medium groovy fries and a chocolate shake. It was just a few cents under $20 for my combo. Food was hot and fresh and I was not disappointed. There was a very helpful worker standing at the entrance to the drive through answering questions. I would have loved to park in one of the stalls and have them bring the food to the car but every stall was full at lunch on a weekday. I would definitely return and I think Sonic has taken the number 1 spot for fast food in Kapolei. read more

Honest review - I wasn't expecting perfection anyway, but wow... they definitely have some work to do. Our first visit? The wait exceeded 3 hrs, so we ended up getting out of line because we still hadn't even made it to the driveway. Crazy! Second attempt was today. There wasn't a line backed up onto Kapolei Parkway, so we figured we'd stop in for an afternoon treat (that we definitely didn't need haha). Total wait time: 60 minutes. The line moved at a slow but steady pace, tho I think the ordering process is what's causing most of the delays. The Sonic you know and love from the mainland definitely offers a much wider menu with more customization options. Don't get your hopes up here... at least not yet! A heads up: Combo meal upgrades don't include onion rings - even if you're willing to pay extra - and we couldn't upgrade our drink to anything "special" either. We ended up ordering two drinks a la carte and a Footlong Coney instead. Drinks: 1. We originally wanted a Lemon Berry Slush, but they don't offer that here. Instead, I got a Lemonade Slush with strawberry, and it was really good! 2. The Cocoberry Cream was simple but super yummy. It's coconut and vanilla over Sonic's signature ice, topped with strawberries, Sprite, and sweet cream. I asked if they could make it as a slush, but nope! Still delicious tho :) Thankfully, by the time we got home, the Footlong Coney was still warm and soft. It definitely didn't taste old, bland, or stale like I was worried about after reading some of the reviews. Overall, the service still needs some work. Efficiency is the biggest issue, and the staff really need to double check the tickets before running out orders. We sat at the pickup window for quite a while because their tap card reader wasn't working properly, even after inserting multiple times... and then they brought out the wrong drinks, wrong sizes, and missing add-on. Figured out that the person who took our order got it wrong, so we just took the incorrect sizes and went on our way since it had been melting on the guy's tray in the 5+ minutes we waited there. No kidding. It was melting before our eyes in the hot Kapolei sun! And - it's not cool to pay extra for an add-on and not receive it. Good thing I noticed cuz you won't catch me back in no line! That said, we'll definitely be back to try more. They're brand new, so I'm sure things will settle down once everyone gets into the groove. read more

Fastest to slowest: 1) Free Self-parking: Enter via Kunehi St, turn right or left at slight curve, turn right on gravel area, park, walk across and place your order at a kiosk outside. There's rectangular and round tables with chairs and two restrooms outside. 2) Drive up and park at one of the kiosk and place the order(s) via employee intercom. Another employee on roller skates brought and confirmed our orders in a few minutes. Unable to remain parked in the stall to consume meals unlike other locations on U.S. continent. Applies to Kapolei location. Drivers must reverse the vehicle, park, and consume their meals elsewhere. 3) Order and stay in your vehicle at two lanes drive thru which consumes the most time. Forty five mins wait on a weeknight before a holiday. We're so eager to sink our teeth and feed our tummies with Sonic. I can only comment via observation and consumption. Id like to say stay away until the hype dies out and they figure out an efficient and effective payment system. They double charged me two different amounts. One was my actual order and the other I'm guessing was someone else's meal. Payment was super confusing and I'll get to that soon. I'm reviewing after my experience on the July 4 weekend. I went here to try it out like everyone does when something brand new opens on island. Our burgers and hot dogs weren't anything to brag about and was your typical fast food type. The drinks is where i think Sonic makes their money and at least those are good. My experience of 1 star is payment. I decided I didn't want to sit in my car and it would be faster to order at the screens and sit at the tables to eat. We went through this queue line that was empty and thought we were going to order at the screen but these 2 workers took my order on the ipad and made me pay at the screen still. I paid that amount thinking the number looked high for literally a burger, a hot dog, jalapeno poppers, and 2 drinks. After a small 10 minute wait, the server comes out with my food and receipt plus a card payment reader to pay again. I immediately check out the bill and it's my order at a lower price as I thought it would be so I asked who's meal did I just pay for? The server said the higher charge never went through and I didn't see it on my banking app so I thought we're good. I got curious today if that was ever resolved properly and as expected I had 2 charges from Sonic, whoever's meal and mine. If you're going to have 2 workers enter your order on an ipad, might as well make us pay on the ipad instead of fumbling orders and paying on the screen they didn't want us touching. We know how to work the screen so why even force us to order on the ipad? Better yet, why not order on the screen, wait for our server and food, then pay them on the point of sale system they came out with the same time we receive our food? It doesn't make sense. For me, steer clear and come here in about 6 months when everyone forgets this place exists. I'm hoping the hype settles down by then and it's a better experience. read more

Second day of the Grand Opening weekend of the Second location of Sonic in Hawaii! The first Hawaii location is in Maui. This Second one is in Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i. It was bombarded with customers! Social media posts stated that some people waited in their cars for the drive-through for about 4 hours! Wow! We decided to go on Sunday, May 17, 2026. It's more fun to wait with friends, right? And carpool together... Thanks, Angel! She brought her hubby and her mom... all three of them are entertaining! LOL! Irene had told us about the parking agreement for the Opening weekend with the elementary school next door. It worked out great! Instead of waiting 4 hours for the drive-through, we just waited maybe 1.5 hours, standing in line for the kiosks. Everyone enters their orders on the monitor. A voice comes over the speaker to help. I got the 6-inch Coney hotdog, the rainbow slushie, and the Hawaii exclusive Teriyaki smash burger. My Coney dog was missing, so I went to the door where employees were coming out to deliver orders. They were very nice about it and even gave me a 12-inch instead of a 6-inch! Thank you! The food was ok... a bit on the salty side. The slushie melted into non-recognizable colors. Haha! This was my first ever experience at a Sonic. This location was very clean! Two single-room restrooms available. Plenty of outdoor seating. Inside is for staff only. The walk-up line was much shorter than the drive-thru line. Wait was 20 min on a Friday night. Food only took 15 min, despite the large amount my boyfriend and I ordered. My favorite food item was the corn dog. Crispy, fluffy corn batter. Hot and fresh--yum! Teri burger was a bit over-sauced for me, which resulted in a soggier, sweet burger. Chili dog was good. Onion rings have a heavier batter, but still good. I didn't really care for the cheddar pepper bites. Cherry limeade was nice. Friendly service! When we were missing a burger in our order, a manager was quick to help. My boyfriend and I even saw several employees helping an immobile car get around. The first Sonic on Oahu opened yesterday in Kapolei. We went today to check it out. We got there at 10am and there was already a line. We waited in line for an hour and a half before we got to order. It took another 10 minutes to get our food. We got a Footlong Quarter Pound Coney Combo with fries and cherry limeade. We also got a Teriyaki Smash Burger (Hawaii exclusive), Chicken Bites, Mozzarella Sticks and a Rainbow Slushy. The damage was about $37. The food was ok. The mozzarella sticks were cold. The fries were warm and the hot dog itself was really salty. I really liked the teriyaki smash burger. The food felt rushed as to be expected. The rainbow slushy quenched my thirst on this hot day. Since, it was their grand opening weekend, they were selling Sonic merchandise. You could pick up t-shirts, hoodies and caps. They also had tables and chairs set up where we could eat at after getting our food. I wouldn't mind returning again when it isn't so busy. read more

Newly Opened in Kapolei and a Must Try! It is located on Kapolei Parkway, just before Fort Barrette Road. This new spot is already making waves and many were inine for hours in the grand opening to try it out.. The drive-thru entrance is easy to spot off of Kapolei Parkway. The staff greets you with a warm, friendly vibe that makes the experience even better. The menu is impressively large, offering something for everyone. Local favorites include the Teri Smash Double Burger and the Teri Burger. Both are Hawaii exclusives and you cant forget about their legendary shakes. I tried the Double Smash Burger and it did not disappoint. It was savory but wished it had a little more teri sauce but incredibly satisfying. The fries were crispy with a hint of sweetness, and the oreo cookie shake was thick, creamy, and absolutely delicious. They offer shakes in a variety of flavors, so there's plenty to explore. Beyond the burgers, they have about 11 burger options, hot dogs, wraps, tater tots, slushies, fries, shakes, and more. The building itself is modern, clean, and inviting. The drive-up has five ordering bays, and during the grand opening, it was walk-up only. There's currently no indoor seating, but outdoor seating is expected to open in a couple of months. I'm excited to try more items from the menu, but for now, the Teri Double Smash Burger, fries, and Oreo shake made a fantastic first impression. Whenever a big mainland corporation comes to Hawaii, everyone goes crazy. I think sonic food is just ok. Nothing special about it besides the fact that they do have tater tots, not a lot of fast food chains offer tater tots. But when it comes to their drink selection, ITS AMAZING. From their slushes to their shakes, everything is always so good. I personally like the strawberry slush, banana shake & ocean water. Sonic!!! It's grand opening today. We waited at 7:30am in line and they opened at 10am. It was exciting! So many drink options!!! Mind you, it was my day off today so i basically had all day to wait. It opened at 10am but didn't actually order and receive food until 11:45am so nearly almost 2 hours after opening. TL;DR: Nearly 2 months since they opened, made three visits, and on each visit, they always got our order wrong. Opening day was exciting! Waited five hours in line, got two poker chips that offered us free drinks, and two free drawstring backpacks just as a way for them to thank us for waiting. On our first day there, we were given someone else's order, and they insisted that it was ours, even though we knew what we ordered. They finally checked the receipt and discovered that they gave us someone else's order. Once we got our order, we thought that we had everything, but we were missing a menu item. But since we waited so long, we decided, better luck next time. And of course, this was launch day, so mistakes are bound to happen. Went there for the second time, and they had forgotten our two shakes and a fountain drink. We ended up staying in the line and waited for someone to come back to serve the order of the vehicle behind us, to finally let them know that they had forgotten our three menu items. Then today was another fail. Although the lines were much shorter today, when we checked our order, everything was correct except for missing one particular item. After receiving the item, we thought that everything was fine. When we got home and checked our sandwiches, we found out that although they repeated our order back as stated on the receipt, one of our sandwiches was a double and not the triple that we ordered. I can understand the busyness of the launch of the new location. Still, the frequent mistakes we've experienced so far make us question how many other people in line are also getting their orders wrong and are now staying in line longer because their orders are messed up the first time. Not really a great impression for the Oahu location. I can understand the need to be "sonic" but if speed comes at the cost of accuracy, if we had to provide a net promoter score based on the service, it would probably be close to a 1 or 2. Sonic used to be my favorite fast-food place. Every time I went to the mainland I'd find a Sonic's and primarily have their Chicago dog. They discontinued that but I would still visit them for their hamburger and fries. Their Maui location was good also. So if u decide to eat at the car hop then u have to wait for a car to finish before the next one can go. They need to fix that. Other than that the service was good. We ended up waiting 48 minutes until we were able to order. Food was good. Bacon Double Cheeseburger was a good size and delicious. The Teriyaki burger was ok and the footlong hot dog with chili and cheese was also ok. We were not a fan of the tots but their fries were very good! The Cosmic Cheeseburgers were double patty, lots of cheese, moist and delicious. Wait a month or two before you go. We had nothing to do at 11pm on a Friday night so thought let's go to see what's up with Sonic (Kapolei). We were around 10 cars into the driveway. We weren't a block away like we would see at earlier times on other days, so we thought ok not bad. The wait was around 40 minutes. Still not bad. We had nothing else to do anyway. We got to the window. It was so unorganized. And crowded with workers. They were bringing out wrong orders, just chaotic. If they were organized the line would probably go a lot faster. I realize it is new but training is key. The big difference I saw between this opening and chick fil A is that chick fil A had trainers from the mainland to keep things organized and running smoothly, or attempt to anyway. Maybe Sonic has expert trainers but they weren't there the night we were. We are not one to stand in long lines. We went to Chick fil A about 2 months after the grand opening. Things were a calmer, and I noticed there were still trainers on board. The food at Sonic was ok. Cheeseburger was good. Shake was not a big deal. We waited in the drive thru for about 50 minutes for our food. Which was expected but this was one of those interesting experiences I haven't had yet I need to write about. Also come from Kapolei Parkway going towards the high school cuz anybody who came from the back road opening across from the housing had to do a u-turn or drive all the way around to go at the end of the line. The u-turn is also partial blocked, so cars have to go on the median & a little on the dirt to u-turn. My boyfriend & I had a hard time ordering because of the worker we had. I don't know if she was new but she couldn't hear us order & we had to repeat ourselves several times. My boyfriend was getting pissed & we were right next to the speaker. A few times she had to ask another worker about certain items cuz we could hear another person talking in the background. They also DON'T HAVE the Wacky Pack Kids Meals at Kapolei location, so if u have a picky child like we were trying to order for, u would have to buy one of the regular items & take toppings off yourself. We tried ordering a plain hot dog but the worker wouldn't let us remove the toppings or put them on the side. As we got closer to the drive thru window, another worker came out with the pay device & literally asked us if we remember our total. We guessed & he walked away. We started laughing & stared thinking they didn't ask us for a name or probably took down any information (color, license plate, type/model) about which car we we are in like how other fast food drive the us do. So we waited 10 minutes just for them to find our order by the way we were only two cars away from the window when they asked this. When we got to the window 3 workers were looking at receipts & we know they were talking about us cuz they kept like side eyeing or glancing at us. Another worker came out with our bags of food & repeated our prefer & we paid. Then she went back inside for our drinks. My boyfriend and I were just over with the service we got & just wanted our food. The food tasted bland & dry. I thought the portions would be bigger or at least fill the container as u can see in the picture of the tater tots. The burgers had no sauce & the bread was dry or stale we couldn't tell. The chili cheese hot dog was good but same dry bread & it's the skinny hot dog they use. The strawberry shake tasted like a normal shake but no savory after taste with strawberry chucks at the bottom. There was just too much whip cream in the shake & had more of a smoothie texture than a shake. We will not be returning to this location unless the service & especially the food quality improves. Side note we were still hungry after this shitty meal, so we got a snack after. We were not even that hungry. read more

Sonic Drive Inn. One of America's favorite fast food restaurants has built it's second location in Hawaii. They had opened a restaurant in Maui previously, but I didn't want to fly over to Maui just for that. Thankfully, Sonic Drive Inn expanded another store in their Hawaii portfolio. This time in Kapolei. I saw their grand opening on social media and decided to give it a try. On the second day of opening, I decided to travel to Kapolei to check out the scene. I arrived here around noon and it was fairly crazy. The drive thru line snaked about 4 blocks long. I got into the line and I waited maybe 30 minutes before making it to the front of the line. From there, it was like waiting for an available teller in a bank. There is 4 available ordering stations where you'd press a button and someone is available to take your order. You'd probably should get your order ready soon, since there's a line already waiting for you to hurry up. I basically purchased a burger meal with large fries and a cherry limeade. Sonic is known for their limeades and other drinks. Limeades are basically flavored versions of Sprite soda. Still a nifty concoction though. It took me 1 1/2 hours on the bus from town. Was it worth the trip? Absolutely. But maybe, once a month would be good for me. I'm glad I don't live in the area since I'd be here all the time lol. It's nice that they're here though. The overall experience here at this Sonic Drive Inn in Kapolei, HI was reasonably good. Considering that there was a considerable amount of time to wait in line, the line went kind of fast and we got to sit down in a chair after we ordered. It probably took around 10 minutes for the order to be processed after putting it in. Sonic is known for their servers to be on roller skates, so if you apply to work here, you gotta be really good maneuvering and carrying orders to awaiting customers. For the most part though, the experience here at this Sonic Drive Inn was fairly good and smooth. While the waiting to order things was such a bummer, only time will tell when the lines will get worse or better. The service was good and friendly. Once I received my order, I ended up walking out of Sonic and 2 blocks along Kapolei Parkway and observing the long car line to approach the drive thru window. Even some people asked me how long was the walk up line and I told them 30 minutes and they said they've been waiting for 3-4 hours in the car. Thought that was pretty nuts. But that's how crazy it can be when new restaurants come into town. Or Kapolei. This Sonic Drive Inn restaurant is located in Kapolei, Hawaii. It's physically located across the Raising Caines restaurant on Kapolei Parkway. It's kind of away from the Ka Makana Ali'I shopping center, but I guess its cheaper to build outside any shopping mall area in Hawaii. They accept major credit cards at its kiosks / ordering stations. The only odd thing that Sonic is known for is their drive thru format. They don't have a sit down inside dining area for diners to enjoy their meal. While their success is fueled through what they currently are doing, maybe they could improve their bottom line by having a inside dining area experience. As far as parking is concerned, there is limited parking around the restaurant. Best bet would be to find street parking nearby and walk on over. Or even get dropped off. If you are like me, take the rail into Kapolei and take any bus route that travels along Kapolei Parkway. I took Country route "C" from Ala Moana to get here. If that fails, you can always call Uber or Lyft to get you here for your limeade. The burger and fries were good and I always love crinkle cut fries. If you love Sonic on the mainland, you'll love it here in Kapolei too. 4.0 stars for the overall experience. Support local! B read more

First time visit to Sonic in Kapolei. We did a drive thru order. Staff we came in contact with were very polite. The location was nice and clean. We ordered an All American Double Sonic Smasher combo with onion rings and a chocolate Oreo shake. We also ordered an All American Hot Dog (Coney) combo with a strawberry shake and groovy fries. Although the double Sonic smasher burger was extremely thin, the burger was pretty good. The coney hot dog was really good. The groovy fries and onion rings were not good. They were very soggy and the fries were stuck together. We also noticed that the fries had a this slight flavor of other foods that had been cooked in the same oil. We know that Sonic is a big company, so we're not sure if this is the norm for Sonic or just an off day. All in all we really enjoyed the coney beef hot dog and the shakes! read more

I miss Sonic, so when one opened on Oahu I got super excited. I braved the long line the first couple weeks and have been back 3 more times. The line is now definitely manageable and I am blown away at the service! Every time I have had such pleasant, positive, and friendly interactions with those taking my order or my car hop! My experience here was top notch. The service was friendly and attentive, which I honestly didn't expect seeing as how busy it's been and it being fast food (high pressure and rude customers wear workers down), but it was upbeat, they had local music playing outside, tents for shade, picnic tables, just chill vibes. I liked it! We parked down the street and walked up, no wait, ordered right away and relaxed until the food came. They offered us all the sauces, tried some new ones, we hung out and ate, the food was great actually (coming from someone very familiar with Sonics in the mainland). This was great and I am so happy to finally have Sonic here! It exceeded expectations and I'll be a customer forever. read more
