One of the better smash burgers I've tried, a real hidden gem. I know Shay's has been around for a while and only now I got to try it. Look for the orange food truck across from Boston's Pizza along Kam Highway, you can't miss it. We got there about 1pm on a Monday and placed our orders right away. Everything is made to order so there is a bit of a wait, about 10 minutes. There are about 7 picnic tables and 4 shaded areas to eat. I was also surprised that there were quite a few Japanese tourists venturing out this side for Shay's. Their menu is simple, with 3 types of burgers and fries. We ordered the All American, Fun Guy, and Krazy Fries. I like how the burgers did not taste greasy but still had flavor. They also give disposable gloves if you're not a fan of getting your hands dirty. Will be back again next time I have a burger craving. read more

One of the better burger places in Aiea. I can't point to one thing about the burger that makes it so special, it's just the totality of the burger, the bun, the toppings, and the sauce. It's just a really good burger. Now the thing about this is it is a food truck, that means thae seating is limited to some open air picnic tables with the usual ambience of bugs and it can be somewhat hot. Also, if you go there at the wrong time, it can be a wait for your burger. On this last trip I waited almost 25 minutes for my order to come out, which was a little too long, even for a good burger. Here I am looking for smash burger places in town and I see this place pop up and have the thought that I probably forgot to do my review and yup, that's what happened. We came here a couple months ago after seeing it pop up online somewhere I think. It's a small food truck in a parking lot off the main highway, easy enough to find and park. The wait is a little bit because it's made fresh so no big deal. We got the Fun Guy Smashburger, All-American Smashburger, and the Bacon Me Crazy Fries. The Fun Guy was pretty huge, a little messy like it should be, and delicious! Anything with truffle is a pretty easy win for me. The combination of the smash burger patty with the cheese, truffle aioli, mushrooms, and onion jam sounds like a lot but it's well-balanced and a flavor bomb. Wanted to eat a juicy burger for lunch and on the whim drove to Shay's Smashburgers. Slightly busy about 4 groups of people waiting for their order. Order took about 15 minutes until it was done, not too bad. They have a bunch of tables with shade to wait or eat at. Ordered a classic, all American and bacon me krazy fries. Food was hot and fresh! They give out plastic gloves to eat your food with. Very considerate of them. The classic burger is just your typical burger. I found this place randomly and decided to give it a try because of the positive reviews. I loved the whole experience! First, the young man that took my order was very nice and thorough, he even repeated the order when handing me the food. Updating my review after my husband surprised me with a fun guy burger and fries. I was so happy because I would literally crave this but hardly ever get a chance to come by. To my disappointment the burger was oily and burnt and the fries tasted old. I was in shock and disbelief as this was the first time I have ever been unhappy with a meal from Shays. I asked my husband if it was the usual workers and he said no there were a bunch of younger looking individuals. I believe there in lies the problem. We also got the bacon krazy fries to share. The all american burger was good, juicy and done well. I could've used more salt but I just love salt tbh. I know it's a smash burger but I definitely feel like the classic was sooo small, not enough as a meal. The bacon fries weren't crazy but a good side to the burger. I mentioned that it would be fire with a meat (not js bacon) and he said you could ask for that so I would recommend others to try that out. Tried this place last time we were on the island and it was so good we had to try it again. It did not disappoint. This catering truck is not much to look at and if you're looking for ambiance, this isn't for you. But they make a great smash burger and fries. All food is cooked to order and is hot and fresh. Wait... Depending on when you get here, there can be a wait. I've been here where I waited 10 mins to 45 mins. Yea that was a bad day. But now they have covered benched while you wait. The food isn't premade. They start your order when the customer in front of you gets theirs. So if someone orders ten burgers, you get to wait. Ooh and everyone gets fries. Because really you can't have a burger without fries. The burgers are always juicy, you can even see that before you take a bite. The meat juices just oozes down your hand. This is why plastic gloves come with each burger. And you know I believe the smaller the menu the more time to perfect the food. The menu is simple. What kind of burger, what kind of fries, what kind of can drink. Shay's is located across from Boston's Pizza (I know you read that review). Where a use car lot use to be. This is my go to burger spot when I am in the pearl city area or can't find anything I want to eat at Pearlridge. I recommend calling in your order for pickup since it does get kind of busy considering this is a food truck business! The cashier here is always nice and I always have a hard time deciding which burger I want to eat. But I will say spending a few extra bucks for the Fun-guy burger is WORTH IT. I finally got to try Shay's Smashburgers after hearing about it and it was pretty good! The food truck is located in an open lot off the side of Kamehameha highway. Parking can be easily found so that's a plus! I came during lunch time and it looked empty, but turns out there were a bunch of take-out orders ahead of mines so I highly recommend calling ahead of time so you don't have to wait long. Service was friendly and efficient! There are shared benches and tables to eat on and if you're not feeling burgers then there are other food trucks in the area that you could go support :) I had their All American Smashburger with a side of fries. We stopped here after checking out the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet and this place didn't disappoint! As a group we got 2 Classic Burgers, 1 American, 1 Fun Guy and 1 order of Bacon Me Krazy fries. First of all, the prices are unbeatable -- $7 for a burger is almost unheard of, especially for a food truck! I personally at the Bacon Me Crazy Fries ($6) and tried a bit of the Fun Guy. The fries had a great flavor-- the secret sauce tasted like a honey mustard with relish -- sweeter than I expected, and very addicting! The Fun guy Burger had good flavor and definitely a wholesome choice for mushroom lovers -- I'm not a mushroom person, but the beef flavor really came out and the bread was delish! I didn't see it on the menu, but I think they offer a smaller kid's version called a "Jr." My least favorite thing about this area was the FLIES. we ate our food in the patio area (about 10/12 covered and uncovered tables) and the flies were trying to eat us alive. A bit annoying to have to swat flies every 10 seconds, but the food was worth it! Also, I'm not sure if it's because we ordered some of our food to go, but the guy taking orders walked our food to our table and I noticed others went up to retrieve their food-- just a nice touch. My kid loved their fries and so did I It's located right after a used car dealership and there's also southern and Thai food trucks there as well. I don't care who you are, everyone needs a go-to burger spot; there are few ills that a good, solid, honest-to-goodness burger won't heal. I've just realized that I have yet to find mine on the island, and that's gotta be rectified right away because I won't last without one. After doing some digging and asking around, I had to make Shay's stop 1 on the burger tour; no one I talked to had a single bad thing to say, and some of the photos I saw looked pretty crazy. If there were ever a place to start, this looked like the *one,* so I brought the family along for the ride and made the trek up to Aiea. Shay's has a short, simple, straight-to-the-point menu. 3 burgers, 2 sides, that's it. I appreciate that approach; find your identity, know what you're good at, perfect it, and let it shine. We went with 2 of the 3: the Fun Guy (caramelized onions, cremini mushrooms, bacon jam, black truffle aioli) and the Classic (caramelized onions, cheddar, secret sauce), plus a side of Krazy Fries. For me at least, the Fun Guy was the clear winner. The brioche bun offered a nice, light sweetness, and was well-toasted and crispy without me having to ask for it. I enjoyed the meatiness of the creminis, which went hand-in-hand with the buttery character of the Havarti, the earthiness of the truffle aioli, and the sweet caramelized onions. I did feel that the patties themselves -- though impressively juicy -- could have been, well, *smashed* harder to get that nice crispy exterior; more Maillard caramelization means a more intensified flavor, which would have really put a bow on things. The bacon jam seemed lost as well; virtually undetectable. Nevertheless, an awesome burger to be sure; this is the one to get. As for the Classic: I enjoyed this as well, although perhaps not as much as the Fun Guy. I wished that the cheddar (being my favorite cheese) would have been sharper and more pronounced The same remark about the patties also applies here, too; a little more crispness and boldness would have done nicely. Very good? Yeah. Epic? Not sure I'd go that far. The Krazy fries were more or less sufficient, though I wasn't too crazy about the secret sauce. It's essentially mustard with a couple of light add-ins. I'd get it on the side, or stick to the plain fries and either use ketchup or bring your own dipping sauce of choice. Overall: a promising start to this burger expedition. I'd like to give a shout-out to the service as well; incredibly friendly, and much appreciated. Our office orders lunch out every Friday and last week's choice was Shay's Smashburgers! God bless the coworker who suggested this place because the burgers here are SO GOOD. I can only speak about their takeout, but I imagine eating their food fresh from the truck is top tier. The Fun Guy caught my eye and I ordered a side of fries. GET THIS. You can't go wrong with sautéed mushrooms, havarti cheese, and truffle aioli atop a smash burger in the fluffiest potato bun I ever had. The truffle aioli had just enough truffle so that it didn't overpower the burger and their fries were crispy but a little heavy handed on the salt. I didn't pick up the order but I know my colleagues went super early (we had about 15 orders) to ensure there was no wait, and came back within 30-45 mins. They shared the service was as quick as it could be given that there was only two people manning the food truck. Lunch today was Shay's Smashburgers! My husband had been in the hospital and got out Saturday and was craving a good hamburger. He had the All American burger which he did enjoy! I had the Funguy. I have to admit I don't eat any old hamburgers for the most part. I don't trust the big companies burgers not knowing what they put in them and they just taste Aweful. Burgers were really tasty! Fries were super crispy even with the sauce all over. The sauce on the fries kind of reminded me of the sweet and sour sauce at McD's. Cruising around town, and going to some local places, I felt a little hungry. I had eaten at Leeward Drive about two hours ago, and well, I could use a snack. In this Hawaiian group I belong to, someone mentioned Shay's, and since it was close by....why not? They are located in a dirt lot with three other food trucks. There is anykine parking if you know what I mean, but everyone just lines their cars up next to each other. They have picnic tables in the center for everyone. Friendly people working at Shay's.
