The line took a good 30-45 minutes just to order then maybe 10-15 to get our order. The workers are really nice. We had the experience to pull up like sonic normally is. There was one girl on roller blades the rest were on foot. Didn't really know what to get. They suggested Dr Pepper with cream and the brownie shake. Shakes are good. Tastes like what it says. The strawberry shortcake was my choice. It had crumbles and strawberry chunks in it. Very sweet tho. Smaller size will hit the spot just right. Dr Pepper cream is literally a cream soda. My daughter has been wanting us to try Sonic on Oahu for a long time. We finally went and the service was great. So many options to choose from and everything is customizable. I mean who doesn't want a foot long hot dog! It was great and we were able to find something everyone in the family liked. Service was super quick and our food was nice and warm. Sonic is Sonic. If you've been, you know. I use to eat Sonic a lot when I was coming up. All the hype surrounding the grand opening seems to have lead to a 2 hour wait (we were on foot) in the heat.... For Sonic?!? I never in my life thought I'd do something like that, but my family was pretty insistent. We had the Super Sonic Cheeseburger, chicken bites, a Smashburger, fries, tots, and two Melty drinks. Everything was new and nice with an energetic vibe. There was a little quiet bickering between staff members, but that's to be expected with all the chaos. The upper management was visible and made sure some of us had fold up chairs and water while we waited. I know the day was a colossal success for the location. If they take pride in it and employ polite staffers, this business will crush it in Kapolei. Oh man, I finally got to try sonic on two occasions. The first occasion i went was on sunday at 7:30 p.m and waited 2 hours to reach the order box. The 2nd occasion was on tuesday at 11:00 p.m and waited only 30 minutes to reach the order box. I ordered a large powerade and teriyaki cheeseburger. The teriyaki cheeseburger was moist but far too much teriyaki sauce and it was very messy. I had never tried Sonic before, so I was very excited when it finally opened in Kapolei. Being able to experience it here for the first time definitely built my anticipation, and it did NOT disappoint! The food and drinks were very flavorful, fresh, and well-prepared. The wide selection and customization options are truly unmatched! I was especially looking forward to trying the Teri smasher, and the local feature made for a delicious burger. I ended up going back multiple times over the past week. Even with the long lines (to be expected for a brand-new opening), the experience and quality made the wait totally worth it. A special mention to Takeo and his staff who were so kind and welcoming. They took the time to explain menu items and made the overall vibe much more friendly, especially for a newcomer! I also saw news reports about Sonic contributing a generous donation to local schools, and it's refreshing to see a major chain make meaningful efforts to support our communities in Hawaii. Overall, I've really enjoyed having Sonic in Kapolei, and I'm excited to see how they continue to grow and give back to Hawaii moving forward! read more

So we got to the little order machine, we waited a bit and then boom food ready. And even if the machine card reader was broken, they came in with a clutch having a hand held reader. We decided we wanted to eat there and parking was readily available. While eating there, we had a free show, some lady started yelling and dropping F bombs and honestly it was amazing. The 5 Park-n-Order Stalls were all full with people waiting for their order or eating in their car. About 20 cars queued up in the drive thru lanes which is short according to the attendant taking walk up orders. The only thing moving was the walk up ordering. I got my Rt. 44 drink and snacks within 5 minutes. That part is running efficiently. They do have 4 tables to sit and eat which is a plus. Unfortunately, the appeal of the Drive In and Park to order experience is totally lost with the meager 5 stalls and the incredibly long wait times just to order from your car. One more thing to consider is that they do not take online app ordering! That also means no quick order and pickup and none of the great 1/2 price Happy Hour specials and special offers are observed at every other mainland Sonic. Sonic in California and Vegas is my favorite place to go get Sonic Blasts and drinks from whenever I visit the mainland so I was super excited when I heard we would finally be getting one in Kapolei. Ive been to this one 3 times already and I think I will save my Sonic cravings for when I travel instead. The way this place is built is terrible. The drive thru comes in from the main road on Kapolei Parkway, but theres another road on the housing side that people end up coming in through and then they're either trying to cut the line or have to turn around and go back out to join the line on the main road. The parking for this place is off in the grass area and the "seating" area is outside under some tents. The service here is truly bizarre. Starting with the guy in the drive thru that I think is directing traffic (?) He tries to tell you whether to use the regular drive thru or the drive up area where they roller skate to you. Which is weird because people should be able to decide where they want to go without being told by some random worker. He tried to tell us we had to go to the drive up roller skate area, but we told him no we would be staying in the drive thru lane. He just wanders around out there going up to every car window. At one point he was directing traffic, but im not sure he knew what he was doing cause he was waving down a car to go that was super far away and made a whole line of cars wait. You could see all the people getting frustrated. Then you finally get to order and the people taking your order don't seem to understand what's on their own menu. For almost 5 minutes we had to explain we wanted 1 cookie dough sonic blast and 1 oreo sonic blast, but she kept thinking we wanted one or the other and then she got confused again and thought we wanted it mixed together. Im not sure how much more clear we could be besides 1 cookie dough sonic blast and 1 oreo sonic blast? Once we finally got past that and got to the window to pay, they ask us if we remember what our total was. Ive never had a food establishment call out orders by the price before so that was weird. They did this all 3 times I've gone there. We said no and then she listed off our order instead which I feel is what they should start with instead of the price. While we sat there waiting to receive our food, they delivered the orders to the 2 cars behind us instead. We sat there for a good 15 minutes waiting for 2 Sonic Blasts and 4 corn dogs while everyone behind us got their orders and went on their way. It was so weird. When it comes to the food, the sonic blasts and corn dogs are good can't really go wrong with that. The other time I went I tried the Teriyaki Burger and it was gross. It was way too salty my mouth actually started hurting and I couldn't finish eating it. I probably won't be back as I don't really feel the food here is worth the hassle and bizarreness. This is not like the Sonic in the mainland. I was born and raised here but traveled to the mainland a lot. First - If you parked in the stalls, you are not allowed to enjoy your food in the car. FYI, eating in your car in the stalls is how Sonic works. A worker was knocking on our window within ten minutes of us receiving our food telling us we needed to leave immediately. Second - Customer service is not great. You would think that since we're in Hawaii, people would be friendly - WRONG. 5/27/26 @ 10:10a - Waited 1 hour 10 minutes and went with an expectation of a long wait. The 1st employee passed out flyers to drivers under the hot sun (in need of a cap and protective sleeves against the UV rays). The flyer had order options and calorie information but no pricing. I asked about the app and was advised it was not available yet. No prices next to food/beverage items on the board. When I placed my order with the 2nd employee, I couldn't tell if the two specialty drinks I ordered had the difference calculated (combos come with a drink). I did ask and she confirmed I was paying the difference. My receipt shows $2.09 for the strawberry slush and $1.30 for the mango slush (same size). Missing was the Oreo cheesecake shake which, after finding out there would be no price difference, added a specialty drink order. By doing so, I may have confused her about the shake, which I still wanted. My fault for not checking the screen. At the end of the line, I let the 3rd employee know the shake was missing and if she could add it to my order. She quickly went in to have it prepared. Glad I was able to conveniently use Apple pay for my order. The employees I had contact with on this day were friendly, welcoming, courteous, and had excellent customer service skills. The double smasher cheeseburger with a request for no pickles turned out to be a plain double cheeseburger (missing lettuce and tomato). The fries and tater tots were good but had cooled by the time I got home. The strawberry and mango slushes were refreshing but a bit too sweet for my taste. The Oreo cheesecake shake was delicious. Because of the missing lettuce and tomato on the double (smasher) cheeseburger, overall food taste, and lack of price transparency, I gave a three-star rating. For the price I paid for the combos ($14.89 & $15.39), I expected better tasting burgers so hope to see improvement in this area. My young adult son and I made the long drive to Kapolei because he loves cheeseburgers and was excited to try Oahu's first Sonic. We intentionally waited about a month after opening, hoping the initial crowds and grand-opening issues would have settled down. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing from the moment we arrived. Sonic offers only drive-thru and carhop service, but there is no clear customer parking area. The signage is confusing, and it wasn't obvious which lanes were for drive-thru and which were for carhop. As first-time visitors, we found the layout difficult to navigate. We have a valid handicap parking placard, so I was disappointed to find that the only handicap parking stall designated for carhop service was occupied by a construction vehicle instead of being available for customers. As a result, we were unable to use the handicap parking space we were legally entitled to. There was also a security guard on site who did nothing to address the situation. With nowhere appropriate to park, I had to leave my car in a nearby dirt lot and carefully walk with my son to the single ordering kiosk. The service was slow and disappointing. I specifically requested that my cheeseburger be made without onions because I strongly dislike them. The employee repeated the request back to me before I paid, yet the burger still arrived with onions. The food itself was mediocre and overpriced for what we received. After making a special trip and waiting a month after opening so the restaurant could settle into normal operations, I expected a much better experience. I hope management improves the customer experience by adding clearer signage, keeping the handicap parking stall available for customers who need it, improving order accuracy, and providing friendlier, more efficient service. I know that sonic just opened so the hour wait was expected. It's finally time to order and everything seemed to go perfectly well. Fast simple. We get to the front and I always check my order. I ordered a chili cheese coney. A plain teriyaki cheeseburger combo. With mozzarella sticks. Bacon cheese combo with a shake. We get to the front and I check my teriyaki cheeseburger to make sure it's plain. It's not. There's the mayo based sauce. I kindly asked for just the teriyaki sauce and not the aioli and they couldn't understand what that meant. I don't know if the girl was new, but she seemed to ask her supervisor or another employee and they still couldn't understand what I was asking. So I plainly said the ingredients online say that I comes with a aioli and a sweet teriyaki sauce. I reach to give her the sandwich back and she just says no rudely. I continue to ask, May I please get just the bun, cheese, Teri sauce. They continue to tell me. Okay so lettuce, tomato. At this point I repeated myself like 4 times I was frustrated. I finally tell them no need the sauce. May I please get a plain cheeseburger. She asks me okay so no lettuce no tomato. I repeated just the bun the cheese and the patty. Granted this was their opening day, so some growing pains are expected. Unfortunately, the location felt very underprepared. The line was long, which is understandable for a new opening, but you could tell from the movement of the workers and their knowledge of the products and service flow that the team lacked experience and training. I don't place the blame on the young staff themselves. They were trying their best under pressure. This feels more like a management and preparation issue. With better training, organization, and support, I think this team could do much better over time. Unfortunately, my order was also missing items. When I called, I was told I would need to come back either to pick up the missing items or request a refund. On an opening day where parking was already difficult and cars were lined up onto the main road just trying to get into the location, that solution felt pretty unrealistic and frustrating.
