So sad. I've been a customer of Sonny BBQ for years. Eaten at many of them all over Orlando. I usually come in at Happy Hour after work. I'm a regular at the Sanford location and became like family. This one in Apopka isn't the same. It appears all they care about is money. Tried it Three times just to give them a chance. 1st time... I was over charged. Expect the bill to be around $30, it was $50. Second time it was even more. Third time about $50. For a single person that isn't worth it. Never going back. The food is great. The cost is no longer a value at this location. And when I complained, the server just waived the shift manager over to listen and the he hovered waiting to make sure I was paying. Just a disgrace. I had left this location before the end of last year, unhappy with being overcharged. Consequently, the last time hubby suggested returning, I objected. However, the more I thought about the situation, the more I decided that it was unfair of me to accept the server's explanation, which made no sense. She accepted no responsibility and explained simply, "That's just the way the cash register rings it up. In the past, there was only a $4 charge to add a side and beverage to a sandwich order instead of charging separately for a side and a beverage. Since I had kept the receipt in my purse, I decided I should at least ask the manager if that was the usual policy or what was intended. He listened and was very kind, totally removing the oversight beyond my greatest hopes. His attitude made me glad that we had returned and encouraged others to come, too. We were so late that most of the senior bowlers had finished lunch and left; only 4 remained, so the 5 of us sat at a different table, since there were only 2 seats remaining. We were hungry when the food arrived and certainly enjoyed our selections. I inquired if my free dessert listed on the app could be given to the person celebrating her birthday today, and that was acceptable. Two choices were mentioned, and I deferred to the birthday member of our group. She liked it, though she told her mom that her baked recipe was better. This Sonny's location is the best! The service is always great, the food comes out quick and refills without asking, you can even get a drink to go! They have a dedicated drive thru and takeout area at the front, in addition to the large dining room. You can always smell the delicious meats smoking fresh when you drive up. I love their baby back ribs! Literally some of the best around. My husband and I usually share a full rack of baby back ribs, and a few sides and breads. I love their baked beans and surprisingly their broccoli is fantastic, cooked perfectly with a good amount of seasoning, not just boiled mush. I usually love coming to Sonny's BBQ, and for the most part, the staff is kind and welcoming. That's why this is so frustrating to write. Lately, I've noticed that every time I come in, if I get a certain waitress, the experience completely changes. I don't remember her exact name possibly Kimberly or Brittany but she's a tall, heavy-set woman who always wears her hair pulled back in a tight bun. She is consistently very rude, short, and acts like she doesn't want to be there at all. During my last visit, we asked about the salads because the portions have gotten noticeably smaller. Her response was, "That's how I make them. I train the staff that's what we're supposed to be doing." When I asked if that meant giving customers less food, she became visibly irritated, walked away, and completely dismissed us. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the only issue. There is also another waitress Hispanic who, every time I come in, feels comfortable being disrespectful and calling customers nicknames as if she knows them personally. It comes off as unprofessional and uncomfortable. It's disappointing because I truly enjoy this restaurant and most of the team is great, but these repeated experiences make me hesitant to return. I really hope management addresses this, because service like that can easily drive loyal customers away. read more

How great is Sonny's??? I love that this place is local. They've sent me a birthday meal coupon every year for the last few years and I've never used it. But this year- I was determined to use it! After a round of golf on a chilly day, I drove over to Sonny's. It was a Friday night and the place was hoppin!! I drove around the parking lot twice to find a spot to park. I thought about getting my meal to go, but then I thought it might get cold on the 25 min drive home. Plus I wanted to see what else I might get aside from the birthday meal. As I approached the door, the gentleman before me held the door for his family and for me! Nice guy! I walked in and they were seating families right away. Being that the place was almost full, I didn't wanna take a whole table so I sat at the bar. Heather, the bartender, was very helpful. She gave me the info on the new menu items, drink specials etc. Apparently it's 2 for 1 on all wine, liquor and beer all day, every day! Heck of a happy hour. I opted for the sweet tea margarita, which is not BOGO. But for $6, it was worth it. I chose the pulled pork on garlic toast with cole slaw and an extra side of Mac n cheese. I don't typically get Mac n cheese cuz I'm always disappointed. Well let me tell you folks. I was NOT disappointed. The cheese sauce stayed cheesy and did not congeal into a blob. The noodles were perfectly done. So good, I ate it all. The pork sandwich was meaty! I didn't eat the bread- since I ate all the Mac n cheese. Gotta choose your carbs folks. (But I did take the bread home to repurpose into breakfast.) I tried all four sauces on the pork. My favorite was the "Smokin'" sauce. Nice touch of heat but really not that hot in comparison to routine hot sauce. The cole slaw was the perfect antidote to the hot spicy pork. Just enough sauce on the slaw but not so much to drown it. Portions were good! I was satisfied. The meal comes with a drink but I didn't want one. Heather offered to send me home with a sweet tea etc but I declined. At the bar there are plenty of TVs. I was watching the LSU v UK gymnastics competition but football was also on. A couple, who are regulars, came in and sat by me. Apparently they frequent every Friday. They mentioned a military discount- awesome. We chatted for about 30 min about life and all things. Nice people. I finished my meal, finished my margarita and took my bread to go. The meal aside from the cocktail and extra side, was free because of the birthday coupon. So if you're not signed up for their reward program- sign up today! Must have lots of good food to keep these old buzzards in Apopka fed every day. This is the entertainment in the Drive Thru line. I tried the appetizer BBQ Pork Egg Rolls ($7.29) for the first time today. Not bad. I love regular Chinese egg rolls and these were just as good. For the main course Iordered the Pick 2 Combo ($13.99) consisting of pulled pork, hot links, seasoned tater tots, corn bread and a baked sweet potato with cinnamon butter. So, we stopped in this afternoon as there was a bbq competition going on in the parking lot. Unfortunately, none of that was available for purchase, so we went inside and got a table. The staff was very friendly. We ordered some cokes and their BBQ Pitmaster bowls. First, the coke machine had been screwed up the night before, so we ended up with Diet Cokes to start with. The bowls were pretty, but mediocre tasting. The flavors just blended together and nothing really stood out. I only ate half of it before I decided I was not happy with it. My son, who loves bbq, didn't finish his either. The building is nice inside, so it's got that going for itself. I would recommend passing on this place and heading to either Porkies in downtown Apopka or any of the 4Rivers locations in town. read more

Also, they have a drive thru so you can get their deliciousness to go! This location has happy hour starting at 4pm on weekdays. I always order their peach tea mule. The peach tea flavor compliments the bitterness of the ginger beer. UPDATE: Happy hour is all day everyday! I repeat ALL DAY ERRRRRR DAY! 2 for 1 drafts, wine, and specialty cocktails. They no longer carry the peach tea mule, but the spiked sweet tea is my new fave!! They also support local schools and hold fundraising events which I always appreciate. We ordered two meals. The 1/2 white meat chicken meal with fries, coke slaw and garlic toast and the chicken and ribs combo. That came with corn, bbq baked beans and garlic toast. First time visit. Very clean and welcoming staff. It had a good feel even in this time of COVID. Proper protocols are taken by the restaurant and staff. Menu is masterful. Filled with standard bbq fare. That's not a cut. It's a compliment. They have made up sells an art. Watch out or your bill will be 30% higher than you thought when you sat down. As a business it's brilliant. The customer controls the experience. The kitchen delivers. We did tatter tots with pulled pork. Then I did the steakburger with corn on the cob. I think we had a new waitress still learning the ropes. Quiet and relaxing atmosphere at this time of day. Food - we ordered our typical meal - hubby got all you can eat sliced pork and I got pick three meats, sliced pork, pulled pork and ribs. The food is why I give a 4 star. After we were served, the waitress let us know there was no additional sliced pork. Needless to say, the sliced pork we received was very dry. You could definitely tell it was the end and there was no moisture in it. I would have liked my meal better if we would have been told before we ordered the sliced pork was out and then we could have changed our menu items versus getting the dried out meat. For my husband, he switched over to chicken for the remainder of his all you can eat. I am not sure of price, but we were charged for the all you can eat pork. Hopefully, this will not happen again. Will I go back - Yes. My husband and I are Sonny's fans and love the smoked meat and sides. My fiancée and I both prefer 4 Rivers Smokehouse or Keller's BBQ in terms of local BBQ flavor in this neighborhood...but this third choice of ours ranks high for their quality service and traditional BBQ meals. Our few visits over the years have always met my expectations in terms of a friendly, organized staff and take-out service. And our experiences here always positive. Our last visit, my partner asked for less fatty brisket and it was replaced in under ten minutes at no extra expense. I enjoy the pulled pork sandwich with the sweet BBQ sauce myself. But a high recommendation for this local BBQ chain with a great family atmosphere and we'll certainly be returning soon to try some appetizers.
