Visited Sonny's tonight on Dick Wilson Blvd. Had the AUCE chicken. Tasty, with fries, bbq beans and slaw & garlic bread. Beans a bit dry; took our server a little extra time to refill drinks. TV's working and featuring baseball, nfl preseason and an unknown non-sports program (barf!). At least they were on. Other shop on Thomasville Road has trouble keeping the TV's working. Some female employees working with hair unrestrained (down to their waist or longer), clearly a violation of health codes. All in all, good food and pleasant environment, but management needs to enforce hair restraint requirement. Get with it! read more

I never do reviews but I had to this time. Food was missing from our order. The pulled pork did not taste good. The chicken was ok. The baked beans tasted like a can of pork and beans. Well I decided to give another chance to this location and I'm glad I did! They hit it out of the park! The best way to tell if barbecue chicken is really well done is how juicy the breast is. This Sonny's now has the barbecue Pit tuned in! The chicken breast were juicy and delicious and some of the best Sonny's barbecue I have had!!!! (and I'm not just saying this!!!) This Sonny's used to be our go-to BBQ place, and we went there often for the consistently good food. But, since the closing of this location due to a fire and the much-delayed reopening with the revised decor, things have gone decidedly downhill. After two disastrous take-out experiences in 2021, we swore off Sonny's and shifted our BBQ dining to Willie Jewell's. We recently decided to give Sonny's another chance, and we were not at all impressed. The food, including the much-touted ribs, was no better than mediocre. (I find it very hard to believe the ribs we had were cooked over an open fire.) I don't know if other locations have similarly declined, but of all the many Sonny's we have eaten at over the years, this one suffers in comparison. While disappointing, it's certainly not terrible by any means, but you can find much better BBQ elsewhere. read more

I have always loved Sonny's for decades. Ordered Babyback Ribs - waitress came back later and said they did not have any Babyback Ribs! Asked for Stew - no longer carry Stew!!! Had ordered water. I grew up with sonny's but now only get to eat it on an occasional visit to my hometown. after living in many other parts of the country and searching for good bbq, my heart always comes back to Sonny's. The food is always great. I eat at the Timberlane Road location in Tallahassee, Florida probably twice a week. Sonny's motto, "Cooked Slow, Served Fast" is to the point as we are waited on almost immediately and the food is brought to the table rather quickly from when the order is placed. You never have to worry (as with other restaurants) that your beverage will ever be empty and they always offer you a free beverage to go. Our favorite waitress (Sharifa) knows who I am and what I want when I walk through the front door every time , and if she is close by and sees me, asks........"You want a Sweet Tea"? Since the locations remodeling a year or so ago it's nice to see the many different large flat screen TV monitors around the restaurant all showing something different. I'm a member of the 60+ club as the locations in Tallahassee give a 25% off discount on the food order which is really unusual for a restaurant to do. Some might do a 10% but never more than that. I do wish the salad bar they had would return, but ever since Covid-19 that was discontinued and hasn't returned. I've lived in Tallahassee since 1965 and many BBQ restaurants have come and gone, but Sonny's BBQ is always here. I have tried other BBQ restaurants when they open but they never meet the standard of Sonny's and that is why most of the other's always close. read more

Going to give Sonny's a free pass on food tonight. I'm sure it will improve the longer it's open. Things to note: Drastically different salad bar. No one will be pleased if expecting it to be like the old one. The service was excellent. There are no lights in their parking lot making it very dangerous walking to cars especially for the elderly. The main dining room is very well lighted with a nice updated decor but very noisy. Hard to hold a conversation while dining. I went inside and ordered take out yesterday 12:14. I thought I would be nice since I didn't need right away. I ordered 3 kids meal...chicken tenders, sliced pork and pulled pork. However 34 minutes later I finally asked Dre about my order and he put it together in 5 minutes. This is the 2nd time I have walked in to order a simple meal and it has taken over 30 minutes to put together. My friend and I are in there once a week and it seems like the management is non-existent. I guess they are busy in the back. This place needs some help all the way around. I guess next time I will go thru the drive thru. I knew there was a problem when people sat down 10 minutes after i ordered and got their meal 5-10 before I left. As a 20 year customer I have noticed portions getting smaller and smaller. But this is over the top. Ordered a diner sliced beef it was smaller than any lunch plate I have ever seen. This could company has sold its sole and common sense to consultants. I am embarrassed for this company. Good luck with you tiny mini small undersized portions. I am a contractor who eats out hundreds of time a year. Please note: I'm am not at all upset. I just have so many other corporations competing for my dollars. Now I understand that the folks in Tallahassee think the world of Sonny and his barbecue;however, I have to say, when folks ask me to go along with them to Sonny's, it isn't hard for me to refuse the offer. I think barbecue is to the south as lobster is to Maine, but I wish the proprietor's of the restaurants in Tallahassee took more pride in keeping it up off the floor! I think that fat evaporates from the big barbecue kettles and settles on the floor--enough to scrap up and make chittlins. We've gone to Tallahassee once a year for several years now, to visit family. They love Sonny's so no trip to the thriving metropolis would be complete without dinner at Sonny's. I swear every time we've been there for the past 4 years, the place has been a dirty mess. Food and trash on the floor, and tho' I don't eat off the floor, it's off-putting and gross. Once we were there and the table next to ours was stacked with dirty dishes (not just from the departed party). On another occasion, I went to the men's room only to see an employee take a piss and not wash his hands afterwards. So why return?....really great ribs, great sides, excellent salad bar (so says my wife and her family....I wouldn't go to a BBQ place for salad, but....). Per my stepmom's request, I brought her, her boyfriend, and my family to this location for her birthday celebration. Our waitress, Alexis was attentive and efficient. Sonny's has something few restaurants have nowadays-a salad bar. Prior to this visit, I had not been in years, but was pleased to find the salad bar well-stocked with varying items to suit many tastes. I chose the imitation crab salad, tuna salad, and macaroni salad to accompany my spinach and iceberg roughage. Their tuna salad is one of the least fishy I have ever had. The imitation crab salad pleased the palate without the fishy after taste as well. As far as dressings are concerned, I usually go with Bleu Cheese or Thousand Island. I was feeling a bit adventurous and went for Ranch this visit. Their Ranch has the perfect amount of pepper. Thank goodness I couldn't take their Ranch to go or my Weight Watchers plan would be in danger. Overall we had a great trip and I would gladly take my family back again. read more

This location has had less than average comments. It's hit or miss I guess. The first time I was here the food was average, not special not horrible. I did give them another try, this time I had the pulled pork lunch plate. Pork was good but not hot, fried okra was very hot as was the baked sweet potato and the cornbread. Overall I enjoy Sonny's but in the past two months I have eaten here and had the pulled chicken sandwich. The first time there was a bone which surprised me because I had never in the multiple times that I had eaten there in past years experienced this. I went again about a week ago and there were multiple bones in my pulled chicken sandwich. This is hard on teeth alone, luckily I noticed and put them to the side.
