Our vintage embroidery scissors weren't doing the job so I took them into Sonoma Cutlery. Picked up the pair just a few days later and the price was right. They little scissors are now working and cutting as they should be. Never been in the shop before and now I know they sell more than just kitchen knives. They have a little bit of everything and the staff are super helpful. Worth a visit even if you don't need sharpening services. read more

Sine I couldn't leave a google review, I will leave a yelp review. STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS. I came here during the summer to look at some pocket and kitchen knives. This place has many brands to choose from which is nice. However, if you price compare online through some of the brands offered you will find everything is marked way way up to maximize profits. This place doesn't honor when the companies have products they sell online are on sale. They refuse to sell the same item in the store for the companies online sale price. Do your research before coming here and getting screwed out of money. Not to mention the day I came in there some guy in there claiming to be the owner. Her was completely irrational in behavior. Covered in dog hair and honestly looked homeless. Personally watched him mess up what looked like a nice window display to place a political sign in the window of running for mayor or something for San Francisco. Frantically walking up and down the sidewalk treating people Who weren't in the store like they were peasants and below him. Told anyone who he could yell at that the store is bankrupt. There are many other well reviewed companies online who sell the same pocket knives at a better price. Not to mention this place has dingy walls and nasty stained carpet. The free sharpening service they offer for kitchen knives isn't worth it if you're paying way over the price for them. The only nice thing is being able to hold the knives in your hand. Do your research before buying over priced items from here. Go in hold the knife and leave to buy it online. Better price and I can only assume probably better return policies and no disheveled owner treating people like trash. This place makes its own inflation prices to take advantage of people who don't know better. Buyer beware and take your business elsewhere. Was in town for a family reunion dinner tonight and noticed it's all covered in news paper. Not surprised. Hopefully a place goes in there that doesn't jack prices up just to make an extra buck of the locals and anyone else. read more

This shop is great. I lost my Chris Reeve's Sebenza under about 1000 yards of earth a couple of weeks ago so I've been in the market for a new everyday carry knife. I hate buying online as there is no tactile feel without handling, which is so much of the experience with such a critical personal tool. The girl at the counter- Rayna- said hello and asked if she could help, but was respectful of my desire to just look for a bit and left me alone. After about 10 minutes when I was ready, she came over and spent about 45 minutes with me while I hemmed and hawed and went back and forth over about 20 different makes and manufacturers. I handled (and re-handled) a ton of knives trying to be sure. Besides being extremely patient, she was VERY knowledgeable about all the products and clearly had a love and passion for knives. I ended up walking out with a Benchmade mini Osborne. It wasn't an easy decision to make, but I'm very happy with my purchase. I also found another knife there that I'll be back for shortly! The service was great, they're a local company and not a giant online corporation, and you can see and handle the products they sell. Most importantly- - they care. What more do you want?? When I checked online later, the price was within a few bucks of online retailers. I'm so happy I made the time and went down to Petaluma and bought local. A happy customer. Petaluma has everything, including a cutlery store where the proprieters give you stand up comedy along with your purchase! Our hosts in Petaluma were gifted a full halibut, but they had no knife with which to scale and clean it. Lo and behold, Sonoma Cutlery had a wide variety of knives appropriate for just such a task! We also purchased an oyster knife. A quick browse in the store revealed a variety of items, such as baking supplies, hunting knives and switchblades. read more

A nice shop with wide variety to knives, however not the best costumer service. Went in there on a Sunday for knife sharping, the store was packed! With no particular order, people were just standing around hoping to be helped. There were no, thank you for waiting we will get to you soon or any system at all for the people waiting. Anyway, not a huge deal. My bigger disappointment is the quality of their knife sharpening service. Two of my knifes had a little bend at the tip when I dropped them off. one came back without the tip at all and the other came back still bent. The worst one was the bread knife. The waves on the knives came back half way gone! I know it's a free service and all but with their high price, I'd rather buy it cheaper else where and pay to get the knives sharpened by people who cared about doing a good job. read more

They have a great selection of high end knives and kitchen implements and the prices seemed reasonable, but their service left much to be desired. I purchased 3 knives there for a total of over $300. After a few days I decided that one of the knives was not what I wanted. Luckily, my receipt advertised that returns are accepted within 10 days of purchase. Great! I went down with the knife to be returned, original packaging, and sales receipt, and they informed me that the knife was not returnable as it had been used. The return policy on my receipt did not specify that only unused knives may be returned. I asked to see their return policy that specified this detail, and they told me that this condition was not printed anywhere but that they were going to add it going forward. The clerk was rather rude, and questioned me why I expected to return a used item. I informed him that nearly every other store I shop at accepts returns of lightly used merchandise, and those which do not clearly state this fact at the time of sale. Again, I asked them to accept my return, in full compliance with their own policy. Again, they refused. Repeated calls to the store's owner were not returned. I ended up filing a compliant with my credit card company, and the credit card issued me a full refund. I got to keep the knife for free, which I guess is okay. I still would rather have returned it, but that was not my choice. The whole point of going to a local store is for exceptional service. To this end, Sonoma Cutlery was a major disappointment, and I will not return in the future. I plan on purchasing future knives on amazon or at Macys where I know return policies will be clearly published and followed. Not to mention, Amazon has much lower prices than Sonoma Cutlery. I urge Sonoma Cutlery to remember that their customers are what keeps their business alive, and in a small town such as Petaluma, these types of bad experiences spread far and wide. I made a good faith effort to resolve the situation, and the store owner and employees were completely unwilling and unable to work with me. Save yourself the trouble and buy your knives elsewhere. read more

Once you step over the line into professional grade cutlery, you'll never go back to anything else. You'll wince at the prices, but cooking will be so much more enjoyable. Yeah, you can get Shun, Wusthof, and Henckels at your neighborhood Williams-Sonoma, but why would you if you can get to this gem of a cutlery store? They also carry other lesser-known but superior lines. This shop, located in the non-descript Codding Town Mall is great. They have hundreds of knives: utility, kitchen, hunting...even samurai swords with a sign underneath that says, "Yes, people do buy these," and more. I purchased a ceramic Kyocera knife. I've never owned a ceramic knife and I was curious to try one out. Since I cook a lot of vegetables it seemed like a logical choice. It is seriously thin and extremely sharp. It will hold an edge for 5 years or more without sharpening and was a great value for $70. I also picked up a 12" steel for sharpening my Shun slicer. I searched for a 12" at Sur La Table and several other specialty cookware stores and couldn't find anything other than a 10". The mother of the current owner, who was working when I went in, was extremely knowledgeable and was very happy to tell me the advantages and differences in several different choices before I decided on my purchase. Throughout the years, she's owned pretty much every single kitchen knife they carry. There are subtle but distinct differences between European and Japanese edges, materials and handles. If you love to cook, take it up to the next level and splurge on a good knife. You'll have it for the rest of your life! read more

This locally owned cutlery store is where it's at. The people behind the counter are friendly and knowledgeable, and genuinely interested in making sure you get the right knife. I've purchased knives, knife rolls, sharpening steels, and other kitchen gadgets here as well as glowsticks and a few other random items they carry. I've also had them refurbish two knives; an old japanese cleaver I found in my grandparents drawer, and a favorite Chroma of mine than inexplicably got a ding. I believe that work is done offsite, but it is always done quickly, and at a reasonable price. $4 dollars for a sharpen, and $9 for a refurbishment. Additionally, they offer an industry discount which is always nice. I would never pick up a knife at a Sur La Table with a store like this in town. More knowledge, more interest, and a much larger selection. read more

It's for carving large roasts and turkeys and...other things." "Like what other things?" I asked. "Like um..." We didn't stick around the for the answer, bought our knives, and left. The products seemed great. But the service sucked. Right when I entered the shop I felt unwelcomed. After asking the woman if she had any other kinds of the certain knife I was looking at she sarcastically replied saying yes but didn't offer to show me the other ones. I felt like I was a hassle and as if she were upset I even stepped foot into the shop. Lastly, after spending $50 on one knife, I saw that online it was being sold for only $25. I went to Sonoma Cutlery to return a switchblade corkscrew I purchased a few months ago. The nice young woman minding the store informed me that the manufacturer preferred for customers to deal with them directly. No problem except the company was in Italy. She provided me with the email address and I sent an email along with a picture of the broken device. After two weeks passed with no reply I went backe to the store and spoke to the owner. He offered no assistance nor he offer a replacement or a discount on the new item. The steel shanked corkscrew that was said to be a life long tool cost $24.95. The total cost of poor customer service is actually the price of a pair of sewing shears and a set of knives I had already reviewed and was ready to purchase. Think twice before making a purchase here. They do not stand behind the products they sell. Very sad and very short sighted.. read more

The customer service here is the worst I have ever seen. They don't call you to let you know your knives are done being sharpened. They are extremely rude! They take forever to work on your knives and when you call a week later to check up on them they can't find them. The only reason I gave one star is because my knives were sharpened well. I've gone to them for years and nothing has changed. Officially done with this place! The older lady when we walked in was really nice. She helped us to find the person to get our knives back. But the lady behind the counter was really rude, snotty and was more interested in talking with her friend than helping a customer. She obviously doesn't give a crap about customer service. I miss the cutlery shop from the Santa Rosa mall. That one was actually good! Don't go here. Save yourself the embarrassment. read more

Many years ago my teenage son broke 1" off the tip of my boyfriend's expensive Sabbatier butcher knife. My boyfriend loved the knife so much that he's used it all these years (meanwhile complaining about my son!!) It occurred to me that maybe it could be repaired, so I called several places which quoted very expenisve rates or said it couldn't be fixed. Then I happened to call Sonoma Cutlery in Petaluma. I have purchased many items at Sonoma Cutlery, but most recently I purchased some of their Scanpans and I have to say that I just love them. These are the best pans that I have ever owned. Dylan, Celeste and everyone at Sonoma Cutlery are very knowledgeable and work very hard to answer your questions and help you purchase the perfect item for you. I went to Sonoma Cutlery in Petaluma as I liked buying from the store they had in Coddingtown. I had a Mac chef's knife that needed sharpening. They did a great job. It came back as sharp as when it was new. At the same time I took in a Henckels 10" chefs knife that I couldn't get sharp. I had given up on it. The guy who does the sharpening took a look at it and explained that the knife needed to be reshaped and sharpened. Years ago I had tried an electric sharpener that was supposed to be OK for fine knives but I found it take too much metal away. Anyway, I'd sharpened the Henckels one too many times. The knife came back with a perfect shape for rocking when mincing and a it was sharp. I now like the Henckels again. Thank you read more

Even if you are not in the market for a knife, you may be surprised what you can learn from stopping in this store for a conversation about kitchen cutlery. They are extremely knowledgeable about knives, the type of steel, how to care for them, which type is most effective for a specific action, and they have a broad selection of reasonably priced knives. We were visiting the adorable town of Petaluma and were fortunate to have walked into Sonoma Cutlery searching for tweezers and a small knife to remove several splinters from my wife's hand. Not only did Helen help pick out a simple razor blade, an extraction knife, and narrow tweezers, but she sat down with my wife to methodically extract all the rather large and small splinters. We then had an engaging conversation with Helen and her daughter about what they use in the kitchen and we ended up purchasing a much needed and amazing vegetable cutting knife (flat, narrow edge for better chopping than our large curved knife we have been using) and a knife specific to removing meat from a bone. Stopping at Sonoma Cutlery was a highlight of our day and will improve our kitchen cutlery for years to come. read more

Came back for a sharpener and the, I think, owner explained all about using the honing steel and taught me a lot. Excellent service, once a year free sharpening for the knives I bought. Went in to buy a swiss army knife that i had priced online at $80 I figured buy local right. At Sonoma cutlery it was $200. I said this price can not be right because I have been pricing at different places and the most I could find someone else charging was $140. I want to buy local but not if it is going to cost me an extra $120 on a swiss army knife. read more
