Throughly enjoyed my experience with Sonoma Cutlery. I have always wanted to go but never had the chance. My son has asked for years when he can get his own Swiss Army knife and I told him when he was 10. Well that time came and we called ahead to make sure they had a decent selection and if they sharpen knives, the said yes to both so we headed down. It was New Year's Day so I wasn't expecting much action, but the new location is beautiful and they have it set up wonderfully. I brought 4 knives to sharpen including several high end Japanese knives. I have only ever had them wet stone sharpened so I was a bit nervous. $10/knife was a great price so I gave it a shot. I am very pleased with how they all turned out, but with knife sharpening time will be the test, they are often very sharp off the start and quickly dull. What I was most impressed with, was the staff! They were wonderful to talk to, super knowledgeable and friendly. Their selection is phenomenal and I can't wait to add to my collection and get a pair of hair sheers for my wife. And yes my boy got his Swiss Army knife and was over the moon. I have an 18- piece knife set. It's 7 years old. I noticed that they had become slightly duller than when I bought them. I took them to Sonoma Cutlery for sharpening. My knives were ready when promised. Each one was wrapped so that taking them home was easy and safe. They gave me advice about keeping the knives sharp. They have so many kitchen devices that I decided to look at my budget and go back. I think that an apple slicer is a good housewarming gift. I recently brought six (more high value) pocket knives to Sonoma Cutlery for bevel adjustments ( changing the convex bevel to flat bevels. I explained what I wanted done with an associate over the phone prior to arrival, assuming both what I needed in terms of service and the capabilities of the sharpening staff aligned, which they agreed to that they were capable and comfortable completing this task knowing the brand of the knives and how valuable they are, they agreed to sharpen my knives, with additional fees. Upon receiving what I thought were fully sharpened and undamaged knives, I noticed that some of the bevels were not even or fully apexed (the whole edge wasn't fully sharpened on all of the blade. This was like this for 4 out of 6 knives), and even more disheartening, the color of the blade near the sharpening job was lighter, where I presume the sparks from the sharpening wheel were hitting the blade, altering the finish or even temper of the steel of the blade, damaging the original blade finish. Despite being assured by the presumed "boss" of the store (that is what the employee called them as they began the service) that it was "just polishing smudge", it was clear that the finish had been altered. But when I got home, I noticed significant issues. Four out of six knives had a lighter color streak above the bevel, even after cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and an microfiber cloth, along with the previously mentioned incomplete sharpening. I am heartbroken because of not only the time and effort it took to save up for these knives, but also the hours I had to spend with a microfiber cloth and metal polish to attempt to mend the damage they caused on my knives, which is the reason images are not attached to the review, as I began working quickly in order to repair the damages caused by the service. This paired with the lack of secondary thought on the part of both the sharpener and the owner if they were unsure optimal service could not be provided, especially on more expensive pocket knives, is inexcusable. I can't understand why, if the sharpener wasn't confident in their ability to perform the service without damaging my valuable knives, they should have communicated that upfront, or after communicating the job with his boss, the boss reconsidered the potential damages that could ensue if any sharpening mishaps occur, as they did. Instead, I paid over $70 for a service that ended up damaging nearly all of my highly valuable pocket knives, damage that cannot be mended or returned to how it was from the factory, as these knives were practically without damage, before they were brought in for service. For knives of this caliber, I expected a much higher level of care, either a much high lever of attention to not burn the lower part of the blade to change to temper or actual finish or color of the blades, or enough personal insight to be able to say they are not comfortable or capable of sharpening knives that are so high end or that require more care. I strongly advise others to think twice before trusting this place with any of their knives, or placing any trust into this store at all for that matter. This was previously my favorite local knife store, but this inexcusable experience has left me absolutely devastated and fearful to return. read more

This place has been a staple in Santa Rosa for as long as I can remember, I come here from time to time for gifts. I am always mat with a friendly person who will point me in the right direction. My last visit I came just for a chefs knife for my girlfriend, took a shot in the dark and asked if they had Dutch ovens. Boom they did and even on sale. Do not get your cutlery sharpened here. I have been a customer of Sonoma Cutlery for at least 8 years. I usually bring most of my cutlery in to get sharpened once or twice a year. Several months ago I brought in my Dalstrong steak knives. When I picked them up, there were awful skip-marks all over the sides of a few blades. Clearly whoever was sharpening them was not doing it right or taking care. A couple weeks ago I dropped off a Santoku to be sharpened and brought in one of the damaged steak knives to show them. The young clerk offered to sharpen the Santoku for free.l which was great customer service. Unfortunately, when I picked up the knife today, we inspected the work and my knife was clearly damaged. When I complained to the owner, he basically dismissed my concerns and said this was unavoidable because of the thickness of the top of the blade. He actually said "what matters is that it's sharp". For someone who loves knives and sees the beauty in blades, hearing the owner of a cutlery shop say that is troubling. I left, walked to the car and turned around to go back and express my disappointment. I explained that the reason we were not charged for this service was because of the terrible job that was done on our steak knives. It seemed like he couldn't have cared any less. I know this particular knife is not some high-end piece of art. But it's special to me. When the manufacturer made this blade they had no issues sharpening it. Neither did Sonoma Cutlery the last 7 or 8 times they sharpened it. Every time I come in this store I try to buy something to support this local business. Husband Unit kept saying, "I can just use my steel" and after he did that, there was absolutely no difference. I've been buying my knives. at Sonoma Cutlery for close to 15 years. It started in the Petaluma store and now we shop here locally in Santa Rosa because that's where we live. They used to sharpen our nice for free as long as they were Sonoma Cutlery knives their brand but now we have to pay, free sharpening was one of the reasons why we continue to shop there. I dropped off my Wustoff Chef's knife and utility knife for sharpening 2 days ago. They were ready today on Friday. Both knives were sharpened professionally. My Chef's knife now slices through tomatoes cleanly and easily. My honing steel couldn't do the job, so it was wise to bring the knives in. Awesome place! The prices were super reasonable at $6 per knife. It's a full service retail store as well. When I have more time, I'll have to stop by to peruse the store. I took my Moms old scissors there and they cleaned and sharpened them up like new. I have a pocket knife that has a little serrated section so it's difficult to sharpen but no problem for them. As I've started thinking about holiday gifts and considering cutlery I remembered my experience with Sonoma Cutlery a couple of years ago. About three weeks before Christmas I went in looking for a specific item, which they had. I asked about their return policy and was told an item can be returned within 10 days. Since Christmas was more than 10 days away I asked how a possible return would be handled. The man helping me tried to stick with the 10 day policy, I asked since it is the Christmas shopping season whether they would extend their return period. He hemmed and hawed and finally said he could check. Check with who I don't know. I left without making a purchase. I ended up buying the item online. I love this store! I purchased my first nice pocket knife from this shop. The owner of the store helped me pick out a knife that best suited my needs. I walked out of the store with a knife that had every feature I was looking for. I am left handed which I thought would be a problem but was not. I was only shown knives that were ambidextrous :).
