I've been here a few times and the atmosphere is always pretty decent. There's usually good energy in the place and there's always football (soccer) matches on at least 2 of the TVs which was an unexpected added bonus for me. The TV behind the bar shows everything else that most people probably want to see. I usually come to the bar to escape my apartment. The beer selection is average but there's at least one or two options for all palates, I suppose. I often order the Sonora burger which is good but, despite me always asking for it be made medium-well, it gets cooked very well done. I'm a little salty about that, but it's always still pretty tasty so I get over it. One day I'll order it again and politely spazz out about it being over cooked, but for the most recent visit, I ordered the wings. I did the bbq style and just asked for hot on the side because I want it all. They were a pretty nice size and pretty tasty as well. They were quite saucy so if you enjoy that type of thing, these are for you. I tend to get the same bartender here when I come in, seemingly younger Latin guy. He's a good dude, tip him well. Finally - a Mexican bar & restaurant in the neighborhood that's less than two blocks away from my apartment! I was a little nervous about coming here after reading some of the reviews, but I'm glad I gave this place a chance. Sonora is pretty chill. With an extremely polite staff and cozy atmosphere, my experience was truly a delightful one. It is indeed an ideal place to drink and eat with friends and/or family. I very much enjoy the decor, especially the tiled wall at the bar. I'd also like to mention that their washrooms are pristine! Sonora is spacious, perfect for large groups. I gotta say, their margaritas are on point. I came here with two other folks, and we ordered two frozen margaritas (regular & peach), two jalapeño margaritas, and three strawberry mojitos. I recommend you try their jalapeño margaritas (on the rocks) as they have a little kick to it, but not as spicy as you would imagine. It's perfect on the tastebuds, and you'll definitely want more of it. My group ordered the tacos (asada, carnitas, pastor, and barbacoa) and Howard burritos (pollo & asada). Every once in a while I like to let my boyfriend pick our brunch spot, and let me tell you... he did a great job with this one! I was a little worried at first when he told me that we could just walk in without a reservation, but I trusted him and just went with it. So glad this place came to the hood! Authentic Mexican food. Desserts have an interesting twist. Tequila souffle? Kahala flan? Get there and fast! The barbacoa was meaty and the lengua melted on my tongue like beef butter. Corn fritters were like little savory pancakes. Nachos? Yas qween! Perfect ratios of chips:toppings. Ceviche mixto I probably wouldn't get again but mostly because I'm a whitefish ceviche girl. One dish one fish, you know you know. Sonora has a great ambiance and would be the perfect spot to take a date or family in the neighborhood. I had the enchiladas with red sauce and al pastor ($16). The al pastor wasn't made in an authentic Mexican way, but it was still good. The enchiladas were also filled with cheese, pepper and corn, so it was a good meal for the price. My friends ordered a burrito and steak tacos with crispy shell and they all enjoyed their meal. We also share plátanos maduros and these were the best plátanos I've had in a long while. Drinks were pretty good, but I would prefer to drink at happy hour (12-7pm) prices. It was about $10 for a tequila sunrise and margarita on the rocks. The staff was attentive. The ambience and look of this place is great. Very chill, medium sized. I'm rating this place a 4 for many reasons. First, the drinks are great, the best drink to me is the jalapeño margarita. The sangria margarita is pretty but won't even get you buzzed. The spicy sunrise is very good too, my boyfriend really enjoyed it! This place has a decent aesthetic and general appeal - it looks new, they have great lights which are lining the windows so you notice this restaurant while walking by. I finally decided to stop in with a friend and despite being one of four people inside, service was oddly slow. The only thing that isn't off about Sonora is how it looks. This place has so much potential, but falls short in every area that matters, from the food, service, to music and atmosphere. The menu is decent sized but brunch is what I was initially excited about. Unfortunately, both my friend and I didn't enjoy our food at all. We were super hungry so we finished it but it was mid day on a Sunday and the place was basically empty besides us and one other small group. The music was very off and a mood killer - most places play decent mixes or even something that makes you want to stay. Not even comparing it to high end brunch and dinner spots in the city, I wish I had gone to the bodega instead. Our waiter seemed aloof and was super late to bring everything we asked for, including the check. Nothing about Sonora feels inviting and I definitely won't be back, it seems like they should get a better chef consultant to come in and revamp the menu; I was confused as to why everything we ordered was underwhelming or not seasoned enough. We ordered a chimichanga but with carne asada (instead of salmon as listed on the menu) the waiter made a face but said they could do it. It was terrible, the tortilla had been coated with grease but not fried, for some reason the rice was just plain white rice and the "carne asada" was old tough meat chopped into little cubes. It would be hard to describe the food as mexican really, more like random kitchen ingredients haphazardly thrown together. We also ordered a quesadilla which, while not as inedible as the chimichanga, was extremely plain and greasy. I was looking forward to this in a tex-mex style kind of way but sadly it was more like food a college student makes in their dorm room. I came here for Cinco de Mayo for some boozy brunch. At first it wasn't packed but the crowd eventually came in. Pros: your can get unlimited drinks (mimosa or sangria) with an entree and side for $30. You can't beat that, however the drinks were stronger and the food was better. The mimosa weren't even stirred well so the syrup was on the bottom and the liquor on top. They do offer several flavors for your mimosa. The sangrias weren't bad. I had the shrimp chilaquiles. Which is tortilla chips topped with melted cheese, salsa, sour cream, 3 jumbo shrimps and a fried egg. I got a side of chorizo. The shrimp were tasty however something was sour and it wasn't the sour cream. It was probably the salsa. I loved the chorizo which were diced up. The nachos were alright some of the chips were soggy. My friend had the burrito and she said it wasn't bad. Another friend ordered the steak and eggs she asked for medium and it was well done. She said it had flavor but she preferred it to be medium. At times the waitress took forever to bring our refills and my friend steak took forever to come which is probably why she didn't ask to reordered the steak. They also had ladies giving out free maracas, sombreros and Dos Equis or Tecate beer. That was cool. I'm not sure if I'll go back but maybe if I do I'll do the steak and eggs. It looked yummy. Was here on 5/31/19 for a "leaving NY party" with approximately 20 other drinking and wanting to eat adults in the party...The service, if you call what the staff did service'was absolutely deplorable. I have never experienced such horrible service in my life. I could not believe it. The wait for water would have dehydrated a camel! After what seems like an age waiting for this place to open, it then took us a while to find time to check it out (figures). Glad we did, and we'll definitely be back. My wife got a margarita and three tacos, and was really impressed by the veggie in particular, while I went for the fajitas, which I think is new to the menu. Good, deep tomato base sauce and the peppers and onions were cooked perfectly (slightly crunchy). The (free) chips and salsa for the table was a mixed bag - delicious chips but a thimble of Pico de Gallo to go with it, heavy on onion. The metaphorical no man's land between a sports bar, a dance club, and an overpriced restaurant; eating here left us confused. My boyfriends' quesadilla was unnecessarily fancy, light and expensive. He was not happy, lol. He did, however, enjoy the Mexican league soccer on the TVs. Drinks were pricey but seemed better value for it. I ordered the side of rice, corn on the cob, and a veggie taco. It pains me to write this review and I waited ONE YEAR to write a review thinking it would get better. The food here is FIRE. Amazing. So so so good. I never have a complaint about the quality of the food. The staff: HORRIBLE. The first time I went (summer 2017) my waitress took forever to serve us and then disappeared. Couldn't find her. It was a 90 degree day and my friend and I were sitting outside. The restaurant was not crowded one bit. There was a time I went (December 2018) and although google says they close at 11, they actually close whenever they feel like it. So I showed up at 9:57pm and was basically turned away. We were seated but rushed the entire time and with such an attitude. We waited longer for the food than it took for us to eat it. And don't even get me started on the wait time for your food. 1hr minimum. The restaurant will be half empty and it still takes a day for your meal to come out. Valentine's Day (2019), again not even that crowded and they were serving a pre-fixe menu...took almost 2 hours for the food to come and then they had the nerve to be rushing us out. We got the beer comped but even that was a struggle to get. The service is WHACK. The guy that they always have in their serving has a horrible attitude constantly. I love Sonora. I'm of Central American decent so Spanish food has to feel like home to really get me excited! I would say Sonora has a very authentic home style. The interior is warm and filled with Mexican decor. It's a very cozy environment. There is outdoor seating available as well. Your greeted by a host, who seats you accordingly. The kitchen is open and near the bar. The tables are spaced a comfortable distance from each other. I've been here a few times. They start you off with chips dusted with chili powder (some are pretty spicy) and salsa! Very nice touch. I love the dish ware. I always get a side of rice with black beans. I love the taste, the rice comes with a small dallop of tomato sauce. I've had the shrimp tacos, fish tacos, pico de gallo and an array of their frozen margaritas. The guacamole is fresh and delicious. I've haven't had anything i haven't liked from here. My only complaint is sometimes the food comes out slow, as well as the included chips and salsa they give you to hold you off while you wait for your food; even when it's pretty quiet. This spot gets a solid rating given that fact that the food tastes consistent each time I visit AND there is never a wait for a table. The food is your standard NY Mexican fare---tacos, fajitas, chimichangas, etc. I like the seafood spin that they add to their menu. My favorite dish is the salmon enchilada, which is a unique dish to find! Prices are fair and the drinks are OK. The margarita wasn't anything special but their sangria is definitely something you can sip on over the course of your meal. Sonora has great energy and lots of space for a NY restaurant. I ALWAYS tip 20%....and I was in the middle of calculating 20% on the bill when I realized they'd already added it! The place wasn't too packed I found parking right outside and my girlfriend commented that the place was "pretty." We ordered the chicken and waffles and shirt steak and eggs. Both things were good and we both completely finished our food. We also had the pineapple and mango mimosa. I definitely got my 45 dollars worth I refilled my drink 3 times in the 2 hour time limit. The drinks were pretty good not to strong but you could definitely feel the champagne. We also got dessert, the fried ice cream was surprisingly good. I was excited to check out this new place. Overall, it was OK but needs a little fine tuning. The kale was in need of salt. And the pico de gallo need salt. Also, the waitress told us Happy Hour was going to end soon, so we ordered with her but by the time she got to the register, she said it was one minute past the Happy Hour and she couldn't offer it to us anymore. Obviously, I wasn't going to accept that so I pushed for her to ask her manager. She finally gave in and did so and of course, he said OK. (I overheard someone else complaining about the same thing). However, even though the Happy Hour menu said "one margarita" as part of a taco deal, the waitress said it was a FROZEN margarita. I tried again to have her ask her manager but she wouldn't budge. So I ended up paying full price for my dinner and my real margarita (which was a little too sweet for me.) The Happy Hour menu needs to specify that it's special is a 'frozen' margarita or else there will be plenty more complaints. My recommendation: the fish taco. read more

Was super excited to try Sonora. Well... excitement soon turned to disappointment. The layout of the place means there is a good chance you may be seated directly outside the bathroom. No barriers or anything so you can hear toilets flushing and can actually see inside the bathroom when people go in/out. At one point our waitress went to use the restroom and when she came out the first stop was our table, to check on us. It was just weird. The food was OK, not great. Tepache is way better. There are barely any vegetarian options. I had the veggie burrito and it consisted of a few bits of sautéed mushrooms and canned corn. The rest was rice and beans. Super disappointing. My dining companion also remarked in how bland his meal tasted. I am hoping this was just a first week hiccup and that they will get better.
