I'm late to review Sonora after I went, but despite the recent reviews I had a great time when I went. My boyfriend and I went here for an anniversary dinner. The restaurant was fairly quiet and they seated us in a area with a nice view of the restaurant but not next to anyone else. We chatted a bit about what to order and ended up asking the waiter. I know we had ceviche and some seafood dishes; everything was tasty and the service struck a good balance. True this restaurant is a bit on the pricey side, but it is a nicer restaurant. The whole point of going here is for the full experience. As mentioned, Sonora does pan Latin dishes and the diners did appear to be a bunch of regular Americans. If you are looking for the inexpensive local South American flavor go to downtown Port Chester. read more

I've been back to Sonora three times since the last review, including tonight. I have to say that I have been completely won over. Mostly, it is the quality of the food, which can be just terrific, like the ceviche and all of the beef, but especially the fish dishes. However, I just have a lot of fun here. The combinations are just so inventive and tonight I had a prix fixe with ceviche, hangar steak and a vanilla flan. It was terrific. My previous concerns about noise may hold true, but the reason why is because people are having a heck of a good time! Me, too. read more

Went for Valentine's Day 2015. It was packed but we had made a reservation. The table we sat out was kind of a hallway next to a patio door and an emergency exit door. You can tell they struggled to make sure there was seating for everyone and more. A few people complained that were sat at the table next to us and were moved promptly to another area. We didn't mind because it gave two options to escape in the event of a lovers quarrel turning bloody. They offered the regular menu and a pre-fixe menu. We ordered from the pre-fixe menu. I had the duck quesadilla, my partner had the tuna tacos. For entrees I had the bacon wrapped pork loin, my partner went with roasted bass. The dessert was a share-able flan and flour-less chocolate cake with ice cream on it. The food was great but I thought it was expensive compared to the regular menu. $69 per person for the pre-fixe, where most entrees were $20-$30 and apps were $5-$15. We ordered four specialty drinks from the bar. A chupacabra margarita, a ginger and pepper margarita, a peartree martini and a pisco sour. The margaritas were the best of the four. A group of six of us went to Sonora during restaurant week in Westchester. We had a lovely time. The staff was very attentive to our dietary needs. The restaurant itself is physically lovely with both two levels inside and an outdoor space. There is ample parking in the lot and on the street. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the regular menu and was very willing to accommodate us with respect to some of our food allergies. He was willing to substitute items from the set restaurant week menu. The food was delicious. We shared a huge guacamole appetizer and some of us had Brussel sprout tacos. I had the seafood paella which was out of this world. My friend had the short ribs. All in all a lovely evening. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Had a pretty good meal last week. We started off with the guacamole, which was excellent the first time and very good the second time we ordered it. It has been a long time since we last visited Sonora, and it has pretty much remained the same over the years: generally very good food but distinctly uneven service. Never have I seen so many waitstaff do so little and do it so inconsistently albeit in a friendly and eager manner. This is a relatively large restaurant with multiple floors and an outdoor eating area, so to be fair it is challenging to cover but you would think they would figure it out after so long under the same management. Chef Palomino was patrolling the floor personally and that probably helped. Beet salad with goat cheese was excellent, as was the chicken with rice and pork belly and the shrimp and scallop with ravioli. We will be back for the interesting and very tasty mix of Latin cuisine. read more

The food at Sonora has been excellent every time we have gone, which is about 5 times now. This time my son chose Sonora for his birthday. Paella was excellent, appetizers were excellent, deserts were great. The only area of improvement we can see is the service. If this is bumped up a notch or 2 this restaurant would be 5 star in our book! read more

I fell in love with Sonora after living in New Haven and visiting its sister restaurant there every few months. They have a number of dishes that very tasty and a wonderful blend of differs types of Latin American cuisine. First - they provide free bread and tomato spread at the beginning of the meal. The tomato spread is great! It's basically spreadable sun-dried tomato oil. The bread is a bit hard and dry, but I think that spread would make anything taste good. The rice they serve on the side has chunks of banana and lobster and is also great. They have a number of tapas appetizers that are great to share - be sure to try the lobster quesadilla! The service is always good, and the venue is both classy and cozy at the same time. read more

I visited Sonora on 3/28/12. It was Restaurant Week and I was able to enjoy a 3 course lunch for $20. The appetizer was Pizza Gaucha - Flat bread with grilled skirt steak, manchego cheese, arugula, tomatoes and parsley chimichurri. This was a very simple but flavorful dish. The skirt steak was seasoned perfectly. My entree was Pollo Relleno - Seared free range chicken stuffed with chorizo, goat cheese and plantain served over spinach mashed potatoes in a sherry wine reduction. The Pollo Relleno was outstanding !!!! I liked this place ALOT. The service was good. I will make a return visit. Oh yeah - the roasted red pepper tapenade that comes with the bread was hmmm hmm good ! I just enjoyed this meal from start to finish. read more

Based on the reviews I feel like they must be paying people to give 5 star ratings. Where do I begin.... we had a reservation at 11 am for a party of 6, one of those is a baby. We arrived at 10:45 am. The door was open and we entered. After waiting about 5 minutes a lady came out to greet us but barely spoke a word. We asked for outdoor seating and she said to give her 5 minutes while she set up outside. During the 15 min wait time we used the restroom. It was disgusting. The garbage was literally overflowing. The floors and toilets were gross. They clearly didn't bother to clean anything from the night before. As we were waiting we saw the staff slowly staggering in with their breakfast in hand and shoes untied. We were taken to the outdoor area that looked like it should be nice... we were the only people there and they still chose to sit us in the section with a broken sun umbrella. The hostess simply expected us to sit at a table with one side of the umbrella drooped down in front of our face. When we asked for options she pointed at the other side of the patio with separate tables as if we were expected to move them ourselves. Finally they put together two same size tables and one smaller lower table. As we sat there trying to over look the clear signs the umbrella at the table we were seated at literally flew away. My fiancé went to help the poor hostess pick up the umbrella, then my brother in law pitched in. Not one other employee came out to help. The waitress came out to take our order and literally stood there ( like Tina) just watching my fiancé and brother in law struggle with the umbrella trying to help the hostess. Not until we suggested she go find an employee to help her did she move... we are the customer right? After all of this not one time was an apology made. After my brother in law went inside to complain their solution was to move us inside.. still no apology. We gave them over an hour to get it together and they made zero effort to correct anything. It's not like they open at 9am.. they open at 11 and it was a pigsty. If the bathrooms were disgusting I Can only imagine the food service. No thank you, we ended up going to Saint George Bistro at 155 Southside Ave, Hastings on Hudson, NY 10706 . Best decision we made, their food was delicious ! And they were fully open and ready to serve us on arrival. The "manager" Omar, (he identified himself as the manager) walked away from my brother in law when he tried to complain about the entire experience. Tuesday night. Drinks fabulous. I actually like the mojitos better than even the very best Miami Beach restaurants. The margaritas were excellent and thankfully served in appropriate glasses. They got the kids orders out quick but adults took quite some time. One order was totally wrong and took a while to get out as well. My husband and I reserved Sonora for our wedding back in May and it was one of the best decisions we ever made. The food, the drinks, and the service were top notch! We worked very closely for months with Omar, the manager, he accommodated all our requests and details and really worked hard to make this day as smooth as possible. From the freshly made authentic guacamole in molcajete and home made chips to the mango sangria, for starters - this place gave us a great indication of the yumminess to come! We tried the branzino with mushroom risotto - superbly seasoned and so fresh! We also had the rib-eye, which was simply succulent perfection. Even the maduros accompanying the delectable filet mignon rice bowl was also very tasty and quite a flavor innovation of chef Palomino's extensive Latin American palate - in one word the whole experience was impressive! Dessert was literally the strawberry on top - we tried the Dulce de leche cheese cake and the churros - both works of art of the tastiest kind! Great experience during restaurant week!!! We were seated right away upstairs for our 6:30 Friday night reservation tonight. It's a beautiful restaurant. Loved the decor. It got super busy by the time we left at 7:45pm so I recommend coming earlier! Service was excellent!!! Not sure why there are bad reviews regarding service. The wait staff were all young gentlemen and I thought they all did an amazing job! All super professional. The coca skirt steak app was delicious. BF had the mofongo, but there was barely any. It was basically an oysters app. Still delish though. Pollo relleno was great! Loved the saffron mash! BF's flan was okay but they should have specified it was mango flan. Awful experience. First made reservation online with request for table and it wasn't available. They said it would take a few minutes to get the table we requested but that never happened. Next, they couldn't find our credit card we gave them for the bill. They gave our card to another customer who left, they charged their bill on our card and we had to wait till they contacted the other card holder to come back and bring our card. They gave us 25 percent off bill! We should not have been charged. We were last out of restaurant, we had to cancel our card and wait for a new, poor customer service and gross mistake to charge our card with another tables bill and give our card to another diner. !!!!!!!! Ruined our evening - will never go back. The management should have tore up our bill, unprofessional and total lack of detail , poor customer service. read more

The food is very good here, but the service is sub par. Ever server (probably 3 different ones served us) seemed to be in a bad mood. We had a 8:00 reservation and at 9:15 we were still waiting for our appetizers. Every server seemed to be annoyed by every question or request. Aside from the service, we really enjoyed the food. The halibut special was excellent as well as the paella, steak tacos and goat cheese fritters. The chorros were excellent, but the cappuccino was barely warm and the apple crisp was way too sweet. The 4 stars are for the food alone. The service deserves 2 stars. You should also check your bill. There were 2 drinks on our bill that were not ours. When we told our server he didn't seem at all surprised or apologetic and said he would take them off without any hesitation. read more

Cocktails and apps were good, but main dishes were mediocre at best (Filet was just overcooked strips of beef, skirt steak tough even for that cut of beef and the rice side tasted like it was reused). Our waiter eventually came over with shot glasses to say he'd bring us complimentary drinks for the long wait, but then never brought the actual drink. Sonora is a little out of the way--in a residential neighborhood, in fact--but that makes it all the more worthwhile doing the navigation (and as a reward it's easy to park, a Port Chester rarity). The concept is pan-Latin, bringing in the best from the countries where the Spanish language is spoken, including Spain. This turns out to be more a mixture of ingredients and seasonings rather than an exact reproduction of regional cuisines, but in the hands of Chef Rafael Palomino it certainly works. On my one visit, my whole extended family assembled to celebrate my mother's 89th birthday. Service was excellent, and friendly. Margaritas appeared quickly to set the mood. I enjoyed a ceviche for an appetizer, a big plate of paella for my main and I was able to lift a few of the excellent yucca fries from one of my sisters. Good selection of wines from Chile, Argentina and Spain. A bit noisy and definitely pricey, but the ideal comfortable atmosphere for a group. read more

I made a reservation for my boss to entertain a client one weekday evening mid July. I had never been and it was shot in the dark but previous good reviews and an excellent website that shows the chef's extensive experience and what the place looks like made me comfortable with the choice. It turned out to be an excellent choice and my boss and more importantly, our client were thrilled with their experience. They said the food was excellent and the wine selection was impressive. I ended up meeting the chef at 2015 Best of Westchester Party a week later and I approached to let him know how impressed my boss was and how happy our client was with their meal. Chef Rafael Palomino could not have more gracious and happy to hear about it. I will be making more plans for client meals there and I will make sure to head there myself with some friends. read more

This really should be a two part rating, five stars for the food and two stars for the staff managing the seating. I had a reservation for two on Saturday night for 8pm. We got there a few minutes before 8 and were surprised to see how crowded it was with what looked like people waiting to be seated. The hostess said that a table was being set up and that we would be seated shortly. The time ticked away and at 8:45 I insisted on talking to the manager and insisting that we be seated. Finally at 9pm we were seated, ONE HOUR LATE! The food was delicious. Appetizers of butternut squash tacos and salad were scrumptious. The Chilean sea bass and branzino were cooked to perfection. The service was very good and the manager did send over two glasses of wine to compensate for the wait. The whole dining experience was marred by the poor execution of managing their reservations. I made a reservation for 8pm and they even called during the day to confirm. Why bother having reservations if you're not going to honor them? I will go back eventually because the food was so good but definitely not on a weekend. read more

I came here for Sunday Brunch with the highest of expectations only to be shot down on every dish. I ordered the breakfast paella because I am allergic to seafood and here was a chance to enjoy paella with chicken, pork and chorizo. The dish arrived- a rather small portion, but since this was brunch and not dinner I let that go. The rice was mushy and tasteless- the texture you get when you add too much water to your rice and then try to cook it out and it winds up overcooked. The chorizo was edible with no spice at all. The chicken and pork tasted like they were rewarmed leftovers. I had to leave the pork over because it was so chewy and dry it wasn't worth eating. The over easy egg was overcooked. To add insult to injury I had asked for more coffee and then was charged an extra $3 for the additional cup! read more

Probably the worst restaurant service we've had in a very long time. It was my 50th birthday celebration. My husband made a reservation for a Tuesday night for 7 people. I was really looking forward to this dinner, and was so excited to try this restaurant, as i had heard so many great things. My husband sent a note the night before, asking for a special table. When we got there, they had given us a cramped banquet table for 5 people, shoved in a corner. Strike one. Then, they brought us the menus. They brought us regular and restaurant week menus and seemed to really be pushing the restaurant week menus. It was Connecticut restaurant week, so the restaurant week menu price was $39.95 for appetizer, dinner and dessert. A good deal but certainly not a cheap restaurant week price. Some of of ordered off the restaurant week menu and some off the regular menu. We also ordered two large guacs to share- one spicy and one regular. When they brought the guacs out...they were small and tasted exactly the same. They did fix the issue with the size of the guacs, but we never got spicy guac. We also had to chase our waiter down. And that was the theme of the night. Our waiter brought us our first round of drinks and never, ever came back to check on us. We were barely able to get a second round of drinks. My daughter, who is a restaurant owner herself, got up from the table several times to find the waiter/manager/anyone to say that this was my 50th birthday, it was a special night, and we needed to have better service at the table. That service never came. Our food came out...some was hot, some was cold. Mine was cold and my pollo was completely dried out. But here was the topper of the evening. I could tell my husband was really getting angry, but was trying to put a good face on, because he didn't want to ruin my night. All I kept saying was how much I was looking forward to the flourless chocolate cake that came with my dinner. well, guess what? and the end of the evening, our waiter comes our with some nasty cheesecake thing...which I could not eat, because I'm lactose intolerant! he never even came over to tell us that they ran out of the cake that was promised to us...never asked if there was something else that I might have wanted....just brought out whatever crap he felt like. My husband was so angry. I have never, in the 28 years I have been with my husband, seen him do this....but he only left a 10% tip for a party of 7. Trust me....10% was too much!! Sonora could not have ruined my birthday, because I had my beautiful, loving family there, but I will never, ever go back to this place again. They do not give a damn about customer service, and they lost new potential customers forever. And, to add insult to injury, they didn't even give me my open table points and changed my open table reservation time to 2020!! They can keep their lousy points! Never again. read more
