I decided to give Soon Beauty Lab in Carroll Gardens a try when I was in desperate need of a quick trim. I love that they offer an in between trim for $15! My stylist that day, Rebecca, was so awesome that I made an appointment for a full haircut with her a few months later. I'm so glad I did! Not only is she super nice and easy to talk to, but she gave me a really fantastic cut based on what I told her I wanted. So, it took me a while to write this review because I've been incredibly selfish but since reading some of the other reviews on here, I do have to add my 2 cents and say that this place is phenomenal. First of all, I am someone who has gotten their hair cut, styled, colored, and everything else by the same person for over 10 years so when I moved here and decided to find a new stylist, I was terrified. I almost cancelled my appointment a few times due to that very fact. I have had some terrible mishaps with salons before, I've paid INSANE prices at hard to get into salons and have walked out in near tears. Anyway, I come to Soon and I show up a bit early so I'm offered a nice glass of water and I just kind of lounge out waiting for my stylist, whose name I won't mention for the same selfish reason I didn't want to write this review (because he's amazing and I don't want to lose future appointments). Anyway, I'm taken a few minutes later than my scheduled time but it's no big deal, everyone's super apologetic but I was so into the zone (great music) that I didn't mind. I got a deep conditioning treatment and a haircut so they did the conditioning first and they probably have the most comfy chairs back there for the hair wash. I'm pretty tall and I always feel super awkward in most salon chairs when they wash my hair, which sucks because I can't enjoy my head massage while my neck is craned at a super odd angle. Anyway, I digress - the chairs here were very comfortable, the head massage was relaxing, the smells were amaze, and off to the hair cut. I'm pretty scared now and not trying to show it so I puff up and pretend I'm confident about what I want (I have no clue what I want). I have decent length hair (below the collarbone) but it looks stringy and bleh and I express my concerns to my stylists who takes a look and tells me very matter-of-fact what I need done. No judgement, none of that "girl - you need to stop flat ironing your hair or you'll end up bald". Just a nice easy "I know exactly what you need" type of thing. And I'm scared again, kind of ready to accept I'll walk out unhappy and will just have to face the damage later but nope, not possible....in fact - it's probably the best haircut I've ever gotten and I've received compliments from strangers about it. As someone who generally avoids eye contact with anyone on the street for fear of some kind of scrutiny, this was a nice refreshing change and I almost wanted to flaunt the new cut. I LOVE my haircut and my hair still feels and looks amazing from the treatment. My hair has life and looks pretty damn awesome and thus my essay about my experience. YOU SHOULD JUST COME HERE. It's worth the cost (which isn't insanely high) and you won't regret it and you'll love the music, promise. read more

I had an appointment Tuesday morning at 11am. As a reviewer said below, "the receptionist flashed a "join us" smile, he was super nice, and offer a glass of water. I felt a genuine welcome. Then, Rebecca had a little chat with me about what I wanted, she was really easy to talk to and had some very good suggestions. The shampoo was a treat with a massage. I felt really relax, in good hands. It was a very good experience. It has been a while since I didn't feel that my haircut suit who I am, and Rebecca did a really great job. She totally understand what I wanted / need. Also, the music selection was perfect. I was the only customer at that time, and it was really peaceful. This review is long overdue. I just had a horrible experience with the services at Soon Beauty Lab in Carroll Gardens, but its not the first one. About 6 months ago I went there for the first time to get base color, low and highlights. I was scheduled to see Sarah and she convinced me not to get a base color, but only low and highlights (my hair is predominantly gray so she said that low lights will blend in with my gray hair and look good, so I agree bc she is the specialist, right?). She put in literally 6 foils and that was it. THey charged me $120 as for partial highlights. I went home and felt like nothing was done to my hair at all and called to schedule a color correction. She was able to put in more high and low lights and it looked a little better, but still not what I wanted. Still, when I needed a color a week ago I went to Sarah bc I always believe in giving second chances, thinking that now she knows what to do. So wrong. I asked for the same thing- light base color, highlights and couple of baby low lights for depth. She again said lets not do the base color so I ended up with one side of my head be very very dark, but only on top (see the pic), another side, very light (my natural gray hair) and nothing at all in the back. I spent 3!!!!! hours and $250 on that. I was really pissed and called to schedule a color correction apt. I came and saw a master stylist Bruna this time and she had to get rid of the low lights, bc there was no other way to fix it and put one single color all over to cover all the imperfections caused by the other colorist. So bottom line, I had to settle for one overall color to just make my hair look normal. So next day I called and spoke to the manager, telling her that I don't think paying $250 for a single process is excessive and I would like a partial refund. You would not believe what the answer was - she said that Bruna (the second colorist) had to put partial highlights in to get rid of the low lights and then a single process that if I would be paying for, would cost me the same $250. Nothing would convince her otherwise. I tried to explain that I ended up with single process, so why would I pay for a full head of highlights? I do not care what had to be done to color correct, the end result is what matters. And the end is a single overall color. Good thing I paid with my Amex. They are getting a call from me soon. Disgusting. Especially considering it's a good upscale neighborhood and they charge you the arms and the legs. read more

Sadly I will never go back to Soon Beauty Lab even though it's very convenient and Megan, one of the masters stylists, is very sweet. I've given this place so many chances and seen several stylists, including Selvi and John, both of which didn't speak to me through out the entire service. Ryan did my hair once and he was friendly, but Megan is definitely the friendliest. I went in last week and waited almost 30 minutes to even get in the chair. Understandably sometimes these things happen so I let it go, no big deal. I intended to get a full highlight and after discussing it with Megan, decided to do balayage. I expected it may cost a little more but wasn't told of the significant difference. My roots needed to be done so we decided to do a gloss, no haircut. Megan got busy again and the guy who shampooed me said I can dry some of the moisture out of your hair because it's cold outside. No one asked if I wanted a blow out or anything, which shocked me in itself. I go to pay and get charged $360. No blow out, no cut. You can barely see a difference in my hair, it's a little lighter on the ends but not noticeable. I wash my hair once and my grays don't even look like they were touched. I'm already upset about the cost and I call in to schedule an appointment to come back in and have it fixed, and Alyssa answers, I tell her my situation and she nonchalantly puts me on hold to check the calendar. Over 10 minutes later, no sign of Alyssa, I call back and she answers the phone after 1 ring as if no one was on hold. I said I'm calling back to schedule an appointment to have my hair fixed, I was just on hold for 10 minutes waiting for you to check the calendar. She says no we got disconnected. I said no I was on hold for 10 minutes and instead of saying sorry about that, she continues to tell me I'm wrong. Unreal. This place is not a nice, classy salon nor do they treat you well for the most part but their prices are certainly those of a classy salon with good customer service. I would not recommend it. If you do go, definitely see Megan. I'm sure she would have fixed my hair but I'm way to fed up to even go back. read more

Christian is a highly skilled professional who has earned the title of an avant-grade artists. Walking into my appointment for a cut and color I was super nervous, but immediately set at ease when we started conversing. Christian listens to exactly what you want and executes flawlessly. He killed it in the color game and I'm now rocking my favorite hairstyle EVER. Every time I run into someone since getting my hair done, I get nothing but awes, wows, and compliments...further asking where I got it done and by who so they can have the same experience. I live a few blocks away from Soon and have walked by it a bunch over the past few months. I wasn't thrilled with the last place that cut my hair so I figured I'd try something new. I called this afternoon and they had an opening right away for me with Sara. I had a short pixie cut that had grown out (horribly) and she knew exactly what needed to be done. She spent time playing with my hair and asking me questions, and really listened to what I was looking for. She gave me a fantastic, stylish haircut... and I feel like my old self again (rather than the ragamuffin that walked in there.) She was so detail-oriented and thorough... After moving to Cobble Hill a few months back, I was stoked to see that Soon followed my lead and moved in right after me, and just down the street, no less. The receptionist recommended Sonia for my straight, shoulder length hair, and she was spot on--Sonia is great! She listened carefully while I rambled on vaguely about the style I wanted, and proceeded to give me the first cut I've been truly happy with in a couple of years. It's grown out fabulously and now, eight weeks later, I'm excited to go back and have her cut it again and do my highlights. I have been going to Soon for years and was very excited when I found out they had a new Brooklyn location so I went there this past Friday for a haircut from Meg. Meg did a great job and I had no idea what I wanted and she consulted with me and after describing what she thought would work, she went the extra step to pull out an ipad so I could see a picture of what she was talking about. I had the privilege of living in this neighborhood for a few years, and now that I've moved away, I will still always take the train back to Brooklyn Soon for my cuts. Melissa took the ideas that I had swirling in my head and made them even better than I could of hoped. Not to mention that it just seems to get better as it grows out. It's like magic. These people are extremely capable and I will go back time and time again. I have fine, curly hair and had previously spent a ton of money at Devachan and the result was a terrible cut that Meg has helped transition back to normal. Kyle gave me a great haircut that I have had before with other stylists and he was the best by far. Excellent salon! I was on the last day of a trip to NY, had always been tempted to get a pixie cut, and thought, why not in NY! I went on a whim on the day I was leaving, got an appointment 2 hours before I was due to go to the airport, and sat, slightly terrified. I had chosen this salon because of the yelp reviews, and was not disappointed. Igor listened to what I wanted, looked at the picture I had brought several times, and really took his time to get the style I wanted, despite having the looming deadline of my flight as added pressure. I was pulled in by the friendly front person who helped with the decision to come in for a blow out. The atmosphere was friendly but the service once in the chair was horrible. My stylist put something in my hair that caused my blow out to be the worst I ever had. She noticed that I wasn't happy and when I asked a few times what she kept putting in my hair she gave me this story about how great the product was but unfortunately she had to keep rewetting (a first) my hair to blow dry it over and over. This not only was the worst blow dry but the longest I've ever experienced. I explained to her how thick and gluey it felt, and her answer was to rewet it again. That was my cue to get up and end the session. I explained my disappointment and they tried to charge me FULL price for something I had to come home and wash out. They claimed to give me a discount which was a few dollars less than what the original total was. My hair immediately frizzed on my way home and the top of where it was plastered with product just stayed the same. A total waste of money and time. read more
