I didn't realize this shop was in the Shire (what I call Castle Hill) and just followed my GPS like a loyal driver. When I got to the shop it was extremely busy on a Thursday morning around 7:30. I didn't have to wait long and you could tell from how the employees were on first named basis with most customers that this was going to be a good place. I've been looking for an Old Fashioned donut since my days of Do-Rites in Chicago and haven't found anything that matches it yet. But this was really good. In addition, I ordered a jumbo jalapeño sausage roll and an iced coffee. While I paid, I noticed that they have quite a bit on their menu and a little bit of everything. I think my favorite thing was the "aged to perfection" donuts which were yesterday's donuts discounted. They had a blueberry cake style donut in the discounted area so I had to get it. That donut most definitely didn't taste a day old at all! It was moist, flavorful, and tasted fresh made. My sister ordered a acobe and said it was the best she had ever had! I came here for the coffee around 7:20 a.m. on Friday morning because they have a do not compete agreement for to go coffee with the London Baker. My wife said the cappuccino reminded her of a place we used to go to out of state that brewed beans from Stumptown Coffee Roasters, so that's a good sign. I decided to try the classic glazed because that and perhaps the old-fashioned cake are tell-tale signs of the baker being good or not, and I also got the chocolate cake donut because it's one of my favorites. Well, I loved their classic donut! The dough was fluffy and light yet not so light it disappears in your mouth. It still had a body to it. The glaze wasn't barely there or overly sweet and dripping with sugar. It was the perfect amount to give it a nice sweetness. For example, in the bag it didn't leave a residue of glaze on the other donut or bag but rather held on to its thin layer. There wasn't a crunch to the outside, which you don't want with a classic glazed, but there was a slight or very faint crisp that was just right. The chocolate cake donut was not dry and not wet. It was moist enough with just the right crisp on the outside, too. I loved that it wasn't overly sweet either. Eating it was a joy! Both donuts didn't leave more than a slight oily residue on the bag, which was nice to see because it was telling, again, of the donut quality. It seems to me that the baker is experienced, highly skilled, particular about perfecting their craft, and surely must love it. This is one of the few non dunkin donuts places I saw that sells donuts on a Sunday afternoon and they were delicious! I got to try three: The bacon maple donut had a lot of toppings on it and is good if you like bacon/maple donuts. The chocolate glaze was exactly what you'd want it to be. The chocolate eclair with boston cream filling was my favorite - good to share with someone else if the cream gets to be too much. I think this might be my favorite place for donuts in the Dallas area; at the very least, I haven't had a better one yet. They were rude and assumed my son was a delivery courier even after he stated several times he wanted to pick up a order that his mom placed online. He gave her my name and she still didn't listen. She gave him the wrong order & then had the nerve to ask him to bring it over 28 miles back once I called and told her that was not my order! She only wanted to him to bring it back because she gave him a very large order even after he told her my name. It wouldn't have been a issue but he was dropping the order off to me at work and then heading to his own job. Coffe is not the best I have ever had,. but to be fair growing up in Italy gives you a very high standard for coffe that is difficult to be met in America.. I do enjoy Arabic coffe and Cuban Coffe as well those would be my default options in the USA but s they do not offer either here, I have just digressed needlessly on this review, and I apologize though I will not take it back. The great thing about Escape cafe for me is the standouts they offer, that is to say their unique items such as their panini! Two in particular stand out one is the veggie, and the other is the pesto chicken they do a good job with making their Pesto! I like to combine the both for a slightly more expensive but very tasty chcken pesto panino with roasted mushrooms onions and peppers, this is my kind of lunch. There is also other unique items such as an Avocado bubble smoothie.... They use real Avocado!!! I know it may sound like a terrible idea but it is actually a great idea!! Kinda like when you first heard about sex.... "The what goes in where?!!! That can't be right!!!............" The avocado in a milkshake????! YEs Yes just DO it youll love it baby You won't regret it and trust me youll want more and more and more.... It's creamy it's velvety, and its very sweet there must be a high addition of sugar to it but it works!!! I am not a huge donut fan so I cannot say much on those, but this is a fun hangout joint if you need to use wifi and yours is out for whatever reason. Escape is a cool little neighborhood donut shop in the Castle Hills addition. There is plenty of outdoor seating when the weather's nice, but there is some indoor as well, although it's much tighter inside. I could see it getting cramped if it was cold outside and the inside was crowded. The outdoor option is nice, most donut shops only offer the indoor limited seating. Although we weren't there long, the employee behind the counter was friendly, so no issues there. In addition to the traditional donuts, Escape offers teas, smoothies, coffees, kolaches, and sandwiches. We had kids wanting donuts on a Sunday morning, so we went with some traditional donuts and kolaches. The apple fritter was great, there is plenty of cinnamon and apple flavor throughout the donut. It was lacking some of the crunchy edges which are my favorite part of this donut. There were some, but not as many as I prefer. My son loved the donut holes, and Escape offers donut holes with chocolate frosting and sprinkles. Not every place offers sprinkles, so the kids liked that. The kolaches were clearly freshly baked, the bread was moist and flaky, and the sausage was juicy. Also, you could actually taste the cheese, rather than just see it. I've had too many "cheese" hot dogs or kolaches where the cheese flavor is non-existent. Not the case with Escape's kolaches. Great neighborhood shop with plenty of parking. We have friends that live in the Castle Hills neighborhood, and next time we're down in Lewisville visiting them we'll absolutely return to Escape. read more
