What a charming place with beautiful people in a beautiful little town. Service is excellent. Always with a kind greeting and an honest smile. Pastries are to die for and the cuban coffee (cortaditos) are a perfect match with the guava and cheese sweets. The lesson here is if you go to a Cuban cafe-order Cuban dishes. We came for breakfast and my omelette sandwich was good. The French toast, for $11.00 was not so good. Basically 3 pieces of bread, dry in the middle (so not soaked in egg/milk batter and NO butter on the side. On a good note, the cafe con leche was delicious. read more

This may come as a shocker to you, but this great little joint is run by Sophie! You can watch her bustling around, in and out of the kitchen and making sure the customers are happy. Let your GPS find this giant plaza on the north side of Route 27. Head to the south end and you'll see them but there is minimal signage. It's a box of a place with nine tables and a few counter seats facing out the window. Everything is spotless. The menu is easy to navigate. You have breakfast on one side and lunch and early diner on the other as they close a 5 PM. You also need to think about the glass case up front. There are several fruit-filled and other pastries. There are also savory pastries like empanadas. I'm going to save them for my next visit. You know the saying "When in Rome." Well "When in San Juan or Havana" you must have a Café con Leche. I ordered a large for $2 and change and it was steaming and excellent. While sipping my coffee I ordered a platter of Fried Pork & Fried Plantains plus rice and black beans for $8. It was out quickly and a substantial portion. Note to self, next time ask for the yellow rice. Everything was well-cooked and I loved it! There was very little fat on the pork. If I had ordered the yellow rice this would have been a five-star meal! I think when I come back, and I will be back, I'm going to have another great coffee and hit up the appetizer menu and pastries! read more

I came in with high expectations, but the experience left much to be desired. The papas rellena were pasty, gluey, and so overwhelmingly greasy. The ropa vieja was decent, flavorful and well-seasoned but it was buried in an otherwise frustrating meal. The black beans were bland, the croquetas never arrived, and when we asked, we were told they were frozen and took time to fry--yet they never came, which in retrospect I am happy about. We ordered a New York style Cuban sandwich and it was greasy, flavorless, and the bread was soggy. The bistec de palomilla was good. The service was slow and inattentive and maybe stopped by a total of 2 times. Even a simple lemon wedge for my cup of water was unavailable. The kitchen staff was jarringly loud, clashing with the quiet dining room, and the presence of flies only made things worse. I wish I could undo this experience. read more

The language barrier is a BIG problem. I'm allergic to onions and asked for no onions on my sandwich, the lady put extra onions. She never came back to check on us so after 20-30 minutes I went to the car. I was done. My husband complained and they wanted to act like it was our fault. Just extremely disappointed! We were excited to try Sophie's but left frustrated and disappointed. My husband like his sandwich but it was expensive. A bottle of soda was $4.50. Thankfully they took my sandwich off the check as I didn't even take a single bite but for just my husbands food it was $20 plus a tip. A bit pricey. The restaurant was small but very nice and clean. It looks great but the language barrier ruined the place for us. I'm sure if they could fix the service issues this place would be amazing. They need to be more careful with people who have food allergies. The bread looked amazing and smelled so good. I really wanted to try it but I most likely won't be back. read more

I don't know what it is about Sophie's. I have gone to their café both the north and the south on two occasions and have ended up walking out both times due to not being served. It is rather confusing as they don't have a dedicated hostess stand. You're not really sure whether it's a seat yourself type of deal or if you're supposed to wait for someone so you just sort of stand there awkwardly while they check other people out no one really goes out of their way to greet you or explain what to do. The first time I went into the north establishment, No one spoke to me. They would take other people's orders around me, but not mine. The second time, I visited their southern location in the off-season. It wasn't too busy that day, but once again, no one spoke to me or explained what I should do so I went and sat at the bar, and I had two gentlemen sitting next to me. The waitress served them and ignored me. I waited 20 minutes, trying to catch their attention. And just gave up and left. read more

I just discovered the other Cuban Cafe in Sebring. I went to test them out and by doing so. One must try the pastries and croquettes. They passed the test; the pastries where fresh and the croquettes the classic Cuban style not too greasy. Didn't try the Cuban Cafe but it looks good. read more

There's no doubt in mind that this is the BEST Cuban bakery in the city of Sebring...hell! The damn county. I grew up in Miami and being around this type of breakfast and community on a daily basis definitely has me knowing what to expect when I'm going to a Cuban bakery and this place absolutely has the authenticity of that Miami lifestyle. Can't say enough. The food is always great, well prepared and fresh. If you're a Cuban coffee lover the cafe con leche is amazing. We often get the Cuban sandwich. This one is served on Cuban bread and is large enough to take half home for another lunch. It is delicious. They bake pastries fresh during the day. Papaya and cheese and coconut versions fill out the sweet pastry varieties. There are savory pastries, as well. I'm working my through those. Also, try the cheesecake/flan dessert, it is amazing as well. Finally, there is the service, Sophie's owner and her staff have been unfailingly friendly and helpful. The restaurant is always sotlessly clean. The menu is simple and short, but there are no losers on it. The restaurant is simple and unassuming to the point that we really found it by accident. Great little Cuban restaurant tucked away in the corner of a big strip mall near two other restaurants. The staff is friendly and food is wonderful. We have been many times since we have discovered it and always taken friends. We were looking for a place to take a Cuban relative and can't wait for his opinion. The Cafe con leche is amazing.
