So, we had fresh bagels for dinner and they were delicious. The bagels were coated on both sides with a perfect blend of carmelized onion bits, aromatic garlic, sea salt, sesame and poppy seeds. I could taste that the seasoning were freshly prepared, as were the bagels. We purchased the bagels from the "Bearded Bagel" chef at the Westfield Farmers Market. He is a regular vendor and was friendly. Bagels range from $10-$12 /pack of six. I was excited to learn that the Bearded Bagels can also be found at their store on 96th Street. I ordered a loaf of bread for pick-up a few days in advance and it was a very easy process. I hadn't heard of this spot or even been to that part of town before and found it to be a super charming cafe with a ton of yummy looking pastries! Situated in an older house, parking is limited and this seems to be a go-to spot on the weekends. They also have a variety of coffee - I had plans to try another spot but I want to go back! Especially for their cinnamon rolls. Those looked mouth watering. My bread is so good - I have been eating on it all week and it's delicious toasted for breakfast. Everyone was super nice and gave me a tip that if you're picking up, you can ask someone in the kitchen to grab your pre-order for you.

The moment I walked in the doors of Fire & Ice I knew Yelp did me good! The space is bright with a modern farmhouse feel to it. There's a fireplace, lounge seating, tables and chairs, and even a bar area (that's where I decided to sit). The ladies behind the counter were nice and gave me some recommendations. I went with their banana bread latte with oat milk and one of their biscuit sandwiches with egg and American cheese. Both were absolutely delicious and I would order again. I'll add that the restroom was clean, but the wifi wasn't that great. I ended up using my hotspot while I was there. This place is also women-owned and totally gluten free. Seriously, I had no idea until a friend told me a few days later. They're clearly a lot of things right!

There are a variety of tables, also some comfy corner chairs. You order at the counter then they'll bring food to you. We all got (plain) coffee. There's a small sugar station on the end of the counter, but you have to ask for cream. I also told a staff member none of us had been there before, and asked were there coffee refills (since the rest was specialty coffee drinks) or do we pay? She said we can have one refill if we come up. My friends got gluten free egg/biscuit sandwiches. The hubs got a crepe with strawberries, bananas and more in it. I ordered the Galette Bretonne - which is described as "a savory light Buckwheat crepe with City ham, Gruyere cheese, with sunny side up egg" and also comes with a side salad. Our food came fairly quickly. The crepe was visually pretty. The biscuit sandwiches looked like they had nice fluffy biscuits (and, gluten free!) - but they were on the small side (smaller than an egg mcmuffin). My galette looked nice but not like the photo (see pics of mine & one from their web) - and the egg inside was well done, definitely not sunny side up or even medium. I don't mind harder cooked eggs, but the whole effect was very dry, so I went to the counter to ask for some syrup. The server told me that he would have to charge me for it. I said fine, yes please, because my dish is so dry it's unedible without it. So he went back in the kitchen and did bring me out a small side dish of syrup (see also pic of that, for size). I had my credit card ready, but he said "this one's on me." I thanked him and sat down to eat. ... and yes, that syrup was just the trick to make the dish delicious! So this is the thing that makes a whole experience "meh" as opposed to "really nice": Between me & my hubs, our food and plain coffees were $42. (My friends paid separately for theirs.) For that price and just counter service, if a guest asks for a small side of syrup for the food, there should not be a side charge. I think the server who gave it to me realized that (but I would have paid it anyway because the meal was just too dry without it) ... But here's the thing - there was another staff member at the counter when my server gave me that little side of syrup. She heard him say "no charge this time," and her expression absolutely changed, and she looked mad that he did not charge me, and like she was about to say something (but didn't). Guess what? I absolutely saw that. And I totally feel like she was not only mad, but also that he might get reprimanded for it. (Might I add, we were also there when it was NOT busy at all, so there was nothing about the atmosphere that was rushed or hectic - although that souldn't matter, either.) And yes, of course when I went back to the table, I relayed that story to my other 3 companions. A little (little!) customer service goes a long way. We put in our sandwich and soup orders when she came for the drink order because we had already sat there 20 minutes and we didn't want it to be even longer before she came back. 25 minutes later we still did not have our food despite asking about it twice. our server said well I've asked three times back there... I don't know what's taking so long. I said could you please mention maybe to a manager? We were not strident or angry, into this certainly was not our servers's fault but we were extremely disappointed because four tables surrounding us had been seated, served and one of them was finished and we still did not have our food. A manager came and said we're getting your food out just as quick as we can and I stopped her and said ma'am it's too late for as quick as you can because it's been 25 minutes and we've been here 45 minutes. She left the table and in less than two minutes came back with our food, sat in front of us said she was sorry and what else could she do for us and I said I'm not sure how to answer that; we just wanted our food. My friend's egg entrée was completely cold, my sweet potato fries were cold and my friend's soup was lukewarm at best. We waved the manager back and explained that our food was cold and must have been sitting for quite some time. She seemed upset took the food back and said she would get them to fix some more and I said you know I think we're just going to leave now I don't want to wait for more food to be prepared. As we turned to leave she told us to have a nice day but it seemed more in sarcasm rather than sincerity. I also want to point out that the prices have soared since our last visit. They absolutely nailed the cortado. The Cubano was a fun surprise. It's Brickhouse's take on a café con leche, served in a 4 oz mug and made with steamed half-and-half rather than condensed milk. As a Cuban, I can be pretty particular about anything calling itself Cuban coffee but this definitely works. It hits the right flavor notes and gives you that rich, creamy coffee experience I'm looking for. This place rocks. Great coffee, great atmosphere, friendly place to work, and definitely somewhere I'll keep coming back to.

So, I finally decided to stop in. Brickhouse is located in a larger strip center set back from Fall Creek Road at 96th. It has both indoor and outdoor tables. There's a curb-cut almost directly in front of it, and nearby parking offers accessible options. This strip center is actually fairly old, though Brickhouse moved in not long after the pandemic hit as I recall. It has survived and thrived, from what I've been told, because of their quality products, winning ambience, and friendly service. This is the retail home of Brickhouse Roasters. There's a strong element of faith as the cornerstone of Brickhouse as the owners were missionaries, and their stated mission involves using their coffeehouse as a training platform for missionaries. Brickhouse is locally owned and Indy-based. You can get their beans here, and there's a wide variety of options. Basic options include coffees, lattes, espressos, and all the varieties one would expect. Brickhouse also carries Nelson Teas, Thrive Kombucha, Pure Memory Water, Triple X Root Beer, Martinelli Apple Juice, Natalie Orange Juice, Evian Sparkling Water, imported Mexican sodas and other options. Brickhouse has breakfast and lunch options, baked goods, and quite a bit more. The ambience is definitely a winner. It's intimate yet bold, comfortable yet sort of invigorating. The employees I met were super friendly on a quiet Sunday morning. They are open seven days a week, though there's some variance in their hours. As someone who is almost embarrassingly devoted to my Keurig, I was pleasantly surprised to see they do have some pod options for retail. I'd just gone to a Yelp event, so I kept it pretty simple on this visit and picked up an iced coffee. There's no doubt I'll be back to try the baked goods. I also noted the friendliness of the customers. That's always a good sign to me. As someone who is frequently alone, I tend to go to those places where I can connect even if it's just a passing friendliness. I felt that here. I'll be back.
