Went for lunch on a weekday. I haven't been to a French restaurant in a long time in part because so many have closed which seems strange to me . I take it,it's a matter of fashion. Any way I had an escargot appetizer. I love snails. I wish they had frogs legs! I had the lamb shank for the main course. My wife had the bouef Bourgogne pot pie (apologies for misspellings ; auto correct is fighting me on this one). The food was excellent. The service was good.They make good cocktails and I a sazerac , something I last had in New Orleans, a long time ago. The ambiance is pleasant and parking is easy.The prices, about what you'd expect. Had a taste for some escargot, and per usual Sophie's Bistro did NOT disappoint. A mainstay in Franklin that flys under the radar. The escargot came out super hot and garlicky, which was perfect. The pate was solid - came with all the right stuff and they hooked me up with extra bread. Only thing is I like my pate at room temperature, but that's just me. Got the rice pudding martini because it had Goldschläger in it. Way better than the shots I did in college - actually tasted good this time around. They sent out a pear crepe for dessert on the house, which was a nice touch and a great way to end the meal. Ended up talking with Matt, the bartender and the owner for a while. Not sure how we have never came here but it is a great local French food option! Service was friendly and there is plenty of parking. It is intimate and close quartered inside. 1. Escargot - good, a bit garlic heavy but comes out hot as it should 2. French onion soup - lots of cheese on top. The broth is great but wished it had more onion 3. Lobster ravioli - good lobster taste to this and delicious 4. Lava cake with added ice cream - good quality and tasty! I am so disappointed in myself. I have literally known about and driven past this gem for decades and this was my first time giving it a chance. But, better late than never and I hope that it stays open forever, because I need to catch up for lost time! SB is so quaint and cozy! Just a lovely atmosphere. A beautiful bar sits in the center of the room. And I can't wait to sit there for one of their beautifully crafted cocktails. Service was very attentive and friendly. Greatly appreciated becoming acquainted with Peter, the owner, who was so nice and welcoming. Now, on to the food.... THE best French onion soup that I've ever had! It was just perfect from the broth to the cheese.. and all in between. Pate appetizer was really beautiful. I loved all the accompaniments that were served with. Highly recommend the scallop entree. It is served in a cream sauce with veggies and mashed Yukon gold potatoes. Scrumptious. Since it was my birthday, they were so generous in giving a crepe type dessert with a candle. Greatly appreciated. We'd already ordered the creme brulee (YUM!) and the bread pudding, both were delicious. Oh and loved my French martini! Was well balanced and refreshing. Service was great! I had escargot for appetizer. It was delicious! , grilled yellow tail tuna with bernaise sauce for my entree. The grilled tuna was on the dry side but the bernaise sauce compensated for it. It was well balanced. The spinach was garlicky,it was very tasty . This was my second visit here. The first was shortly after they first opened, nearly two decades ago, I think. The reason it took so long to come back was that it's not exactly close to where I currently reside and it's also located in my home town, which I try to avoid at all costs. Anyway, my best friend and I came back to the old neighborhood to celebrate her birthday. It's wonderful to see that the restaurant is not only still here but is thriving! There's plenty of parking in the lot attached to the restaurant. It's adorable inside. Love the shiny ebony floors and the painted bar area. String lights always kick it up a notch for me in terms of ambiance. The hostess who seated us was very friendly and Peter, the owner, stopped by to make sure we were doing well and to have a chat. Very personable guy. We kicked things off with a French 75 cocktail. I followed that up with a French Martini. They make theirs with vanilla vodka instead of plain vodka. Do yourself a favor and get yourself one or two of those! Appetizers were great. Couldn't resist the French onion soup and my friend enjoyed the pate plate very much. We had the scallops for our entree and it was the best choice. They were fresh and cooked perfectly! So tender. Loved the cream sauce they came in. Apparently I was so hungry, I forgot to take pics of that! Dessert was excellent! The cream brûlée was delicious! I indicated that we were there to celebrate a birthday when I made our reservation and they surprised us with a crepe and a candle and Peter gave us a parting shot of his homemade liquor. Received their email on Thur that they've got soft shell crabs in, and we knew we got to act fast b/c it was all gone within 3 days last year. Luckily we got the reservation at 8pm. Yes, the soft shell crabs were delicious with lemon butter sauce and capers, spinach and really buttery fine mashed potatoes, perfect combination. We had Escargots and Moules Marinières for appetizers. We enjoyed everything. The place was cozy with a few outdoor seatings. The service staff was friendly. We stumbled upon this little gem looking for a spot to eat before a show at the state theater. We live about 40 mins away and we would make this a regular part of our rotation. The fondue was amazing, the pate compange was like seeing an old friend with all the classic accompaniments. Steak au poive was so nicely cooked and their version of cassoulet was really a perfect winter dish. We normally don't have desserts out but the pear crepes sounded so we good we had to indulge. We started off with 2 appetizers: Vol-au-Vent Champignons: mixed seasonal mushrooms baked in a puffed pastry (14.95) and Escargots: snails in a garlic and shallot butter sauce (13.95 for 1/2 dozen). The Vol-au-Vent Champignons was easily the best dish of the night. I'd request this in an entree portion next time we dine there. The escargots were really garlicky (which I love). For mains we had: Vol-au-Vent de Fruit de Mer: mixed seafood served in a puffed pastry (32.95) and Le Coq au Vin de Sophie: hearty chicken and vegetable stew in a white wine and lemon reduction (finished with cream) (26.95). I felt the Val-au-Vent de Fruit de Mer while tasty wasn't as impressive as the similar appetizer. The sauce was not as flavorful and there was barely any served on the dish, while the appetizer had plenty (with extra to sop up with their very tasty complimentary bread). Overall a good meal for an expected cost, the service was good - no complaints. While we did walk past the bar area (which had a few people in it even though it was a Sunday night)...the restaurant was quite and the tables were not jammed on top of each other like so many places do to maximize seating. read more

Have been wanting to try this place for years so decided to try it. Overall, I was dissappointed with the food. The service was excellent and overall ambiance nice. First, I was there with my boyfriend on a Sat night and it was filled but not full. I hate when they seat you against the wall and one person has to look at the wall while the other gets the full view of the dining room. The ambiance is quite nice and my boyfriend got to look at me (which wasnt all bad,) but also only the street. Not fair and cant get the full appreciation of the place. We ordered the mussels as the appetizer and they were just ok. There was a slight overall odor that sometimes comes if they arent fresh, but it was mild. They were nothing special for a garlic/white wine butter sauce. Next, we shard the sliced duck with au gratin potatos and the mustard crusted salmon over spinach. The duck was very good but I expected larger pieces. The salmon dish was honestly horrible. The mustard sauce was so overwhelming and overpowering that the salmon was lost in the flavor. Honestly one of the most awful tastes I've ever had. Overall, if we do come back, we would sit at the bar and order the french onion soup and maybe try a different entree. I also had the Vol du Vent and hubby had the lamb shank. We were so full. It was our birthdays, and the staff gave us a crêpe filled with ice cream and chocolate sauce. The owner came around with his own concoction after dinner shot. Everyone was very sweet and nice. The food was delicious. We had been in the mood for escargot, and we hadn't had it for awhile, so we decided to try Sophie's. Great ambiance. The escargot was very good. Anything with cheese was basically cheese overload. The French onion soup had a huge slab of cheese on top, and the fondue was more like a crock of melted cheese, too thick and chewy to actually dip something into it. We took most of the cheese home to use in other dishes, as it had good flavor and we didn't want to waste it. However, much too much cheese to consume in one sitting, even for cheese lovers like us. Virgin drinks were priced the same as the alcoholic versions. I'm not a big spender - I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've ever spent more than $200 in a restaurant for 3 people (no alcoholic drinks). We may be back the next time we're in the mood for escargot again. read more

I was in New Brunswick to see a show at the State Theater and met up with a friend for an early dinner after the show at Sophie's. This is their date night / anniversary / birthday go-to, so I was expecting some amazing food. And it sure did deliver! My friend had called in advance to try to get us a reservation, but they told us they were booked through, starting from 5:30pm. They told us if we came in at 4pm and were out by 5:30pm, they could sit us. We decided to try it. So we booked it from the theater and arrived just a little after 4pm. They were so nice, had our table ready and we had all looked at the menu on the drive over. BIG plus that they have their own parking lot. I had the Braised Lamb Shank, and while it's a little pricey, it's a huge portion. It was so, so good. I didn't even need my knife, the meat was so tender. My friend had the Beef Bourguignon and it was also very good. Others in my party had some daily specials and the Steak Frites. All the dishes were so good, and so hearty and comforting. I loved it. Water was flowing aplenty and they checked in on us often. Food came out so quickly and we were out by 5:15pm. I cannot recommend this place enough. read more

They spaced out the tables and the staff continue to mask, even though many places have stopped. I appreciate the extra precaution they take for staff and customer safety, showing they care. The waiter was friendly. The owner stopped by during our meal to check on us. When the staff and owner are so respectful, I know they would take pride in their food as well. When you are seated and get the menu the food choices make one want a piece of each selection. When the food is served it is hot and delicious and just so good. The first time I came to Sophie's bistro was actually why my wife surprised me for my birthday and picked a place I had never been before. I was excited to try it and she had eaten here prior and said it was really good. From what she remembered. I decided not to read any reviews prior to coming because I didn't want to take my experience and if it wasn't well reviewed, I didn't want to have a negative view in my thoughts since she was kind enough to surprise me with this. When we got there we were seated right away. My wife had made reservations and it was for us. Nice small two top in the back. I really like the decor of here. It felt fancy without being over the top. What our waiter came. He had given some recommendations which I always love when the weight staff has opinions on food. A bigger plus when they are willing to ask you what you like and then give recommendations based on that. So he ordered some apps while we looked at the rest of the menu and ordered our entrees shortly thereafter. Our experience was very good and I really enjoyed the food it made for a very overall nice birthday dinner. That was a complete surprise and a new restaurant which I feel like dwindles with every new restaurant I eat at. Additionally, sometime after dinner before we had some coffee. Someone from the wait staff who may have been a manager came over to check on us and just talk with us for a little bit. It is another small detail that I really appreciate that makes a special occasion feel slightly more special. Overall. There were six in our party and we each enjoyed our appetizers, main courses and desert. My wife and I had the chilled carrot soup, trout stuffed with garlic spinach, mushrooms, and a side of mashed potatoes. These items were on the Saturday night special menu. Two of our friends had the same meals, the other couple had different meat dishes. They have been to Sophie's Bustro many times before and suggested that we try it out. We thanked them throughout the meal. We ended the meal with coffee and a crepe desert filled with vanilla ice cream. Service was excellent and highly professional. We were seated away from the main dining room and were able to have a conversation without speaking loudly. The restaurant is tastefully decorated. Food overpriced and mediocre. Had to send back my duck dinner - so fatty couldn't get the knife to cut through it. Sent it back for short ribs and the polenta served with it was like a tasteless, grainy, bad breakfast porridge. Server was totally in a rush to go home and rushed us through dinner, wouldn't let us leisurely enjoy the company (not the food - 6 of us were thoroughly unimpressed). Hovered over us the entire dinner. Then gave herself a 20% tip without even giving us the bill. Total chutzpah! Wouldn't recommend this restaurant at all. read more
