Good food, enjoyable evening. We saw that the reviews were mixed for this place, but decided to try it for date night. Overall, we liked everything we tried, and the service was good (we think it may have been the owner) - Stuffed figs were GREAT, but probably could have been six figs instead of 4, for the price. We didn't mind, we need to watch what we're eating. - Eggplant entree was good, but felt more like an appetizer. - Stuffed peppers were very good, I'd order again. - Dessert was a special. Some sort of blueberry/marscapone cake. It was very good, but we could tell it was in the case for a few days. It would have benefited from a pinch of salt in the Marscapone and/or some lemon-zest on top. WIth that much fat (Delish!), it needed something to "brighten it up". That sounds a bit critical, but the bottom line (and most important data) is that we enjoyed our meal and would go back. Also, the room is very nice, a great environment for date-night. My wife and I had a great time at Sophie's! We were visiting the area and thought their menu looked interesting, and we were totally impressed! I got the Moussaka and my wife got the Salmon Nikoloff, neither of us had ever had such dishes before, and they were delicious! We also ended up getting chocolate mousse for dessert, and it was served the way mousse is meant to be: the cake at the bottom was actually warm and fresh! Not only that, but our server Helen was very attentive and delightful. The husband of the owner/chef also made frequent appearances to top off our waters (never got below half, and I drink a lot of water!!) and check to make sure we were happy. We also happened to be there the night of the Duke v. UNC basketball game and it was fun to watch everyone get super into the game. We would totally go back the next time we're in the Raleigh area! read more

We found Sophie's Grill and Bar on whim via a web search for local eateries and decided to give it a try. The pictures of the food drew us in. Everything looked delicious - so off we went. The location is in a small area so parking is a little tricky. We went in on what seemed like a busy night for them. There was await, so we decided to sit at the bar (as it was a first come, first served) and order from the menu. We were greeted by one of the staff members and quickly alerted that they were very busy (due to being short staff) but would be to us as quick as possible. We acknowledged and let them know we were fine with the wait. This gave us time to look over the menu and decide what we wanted. There was a lot to choose from being something simple like chicken wings to having a full meal. We decided on the following: Sophie's Ginger Spritz: Made with organic ginger beer and our white Georguab semi-sweet wine, fresh fruits and soda, it may be your new favorite aperitive.Chicken Schnitzel: Pickled marinated & panko crusted. Served with mashed potatoes, mushroom Marsala sauce and red braised cabbage.Michael Jordan Burger: Beef burger with provolone cheese and crisp applewood bacon.Salmon Nikoloff: Grilled fresh salmon on a bed of sautéed fresh spinach, topped with a rich mushroom cream sauce. Served with crisp asparagus spears. As you can see in the photos, I am only showing the chicken schnitzel and drink. This is because the rest of the food came out so late we just had them box it up to go. We did wait about 10 mins to get our order entered. Then from there it was down hill with the wait time, the chicken entree came out. It wasn't piping hot as one would expect but it was good. Might have been great if it was piping hot. My guest said the drink was good - but it wasn't ginger beer more like a ginger syrup. The other entrées took about another 20 mins to come to us. When they got home and tried it, they said the food was good but would have probably been better when it was fresh and piping hot. My boyfriend and I dined here a few weeks ago for a date night and we were very impressed. We were both craving Eastern European food and Sophie's exceeded our expectations. The owner is from Bulgaria and has a lot of unique food and drinks on her menu. We were able to make reservations and we asked for a booth. There are lots of fresh flowers and plants decorating this restaurant. We loved the vibes and definitely felt like we were transported to a restaurant in Europe. I started with a bourbon drink called the Boulevardier with Campari and it was delicious. My boyfriend had a bourbon. We ordered the Armenian figs appetizer, and my only complaint is the bacon was barely cooked. That is on me though because I should have specified we like our bacon well done. For our entrees my boyfriend had the Balkan's wine kebab and I had the stuffed cabbage rolls. My entree was really good, but next time I'm ordering the wine kebab. The flavors were amazing! It consisted of slow roasted chicken, veggies and rice. The bartender was our server and she was wonderful. We both can't wait to return. read more

Visited Sophie's today for the first time for lunch - and we're so very sorry we didn't try it earlier. The food was fantastic! We had the perfect lunch for two to share: the Slovakian Paprikash - chicken, potatoes, tomatoes and lots of paprika - and the Armenian Figs - sweet Armenian baked figs, stuffed with feta cheese and wrapped in applewood bacon, baked with Asiago and balsamic glaze. I went a year ago and ordered a side, appetizer, and a burger. I commend them on the undercooked burger--if you're a fan of raw meat, it was perfectly underdone. The tater tots were as good as any frozen Ore-Ida bag from the store, and I loved that they were salted heavily so I didn't have to bother with the salt shaker myself. Top notch! Their "special Greek appetizer platter" was unforgettable: slices of tomato and cucumber like you'd find at any grocery store, with canned hummus that really hit the spot. Their homemade tzatziki was a bold twist--using canned pickles instead of fresh cucumber, plus dried granulated garlic for that effortless, stale flavor. This year, I returned for my annual checkup and tried the traditional Greek moussaka. As Sophie's is the only spot in town for Greek food, I had no choice. Desy went all out, removing every traditional flavor to keep things bland and organic--perfect for the local palate. The eggplant and potatoes were so mushy you barely needed teeth, and the grade B ground beef was just the rustic touch I hoped for. Topping it off with a French sauce really brought the whole dish "back to Mykonos." Most importantly, dinner and a show! I got to savor my meal while one of Sophie's beloved karaoke bands took the stage--truly a highlight. If you're tired of real live music and crave the thrill of bands playing along to pre-recorded tracks, this is the place to be! We went there for Xmas dinner. Made reservations, when upon arrival, did not seem to matter. There was no wait and the host was not checking a book or anything to confirm reservations. Needless to say I really wanted to enjoy this place. We ordered our drinks and it took about 20 minutes to get them. It was only a draft cider and an old fashion. The waitress who took our drink order suggested we put in an appetizer immediately if we wanted one because she will probably "forget us". So we chose the bacon wrapped figs on a whim. They came out in about 10 minutes and were cold and way overpriced. Did not really enjoy them. Once we finished them and our plate was taken away, about 3 minutes later another waitress came over and asked if we ever got our figs, we said we did and she then offered to take our order. I asked for the stuffed cabbage but to my dismay, they were out. Would have liked to have known that from the start. I settled on the goulash and my wife chose the salmon on sautéed spinach. About 10 minutes after taking our order, our original waitress comes up and asks to take our dinner order, we said the other waitress got it and they chaos ensued. The waitress who took our dinner order came over and spoke with our original waitress and then told us she forgot what we ordered and never keyed it in. We watched her write it down so that was confusing. So we placed the order again. Around us we noticed many upset tables whose food either came out wrong or not at all and then realized it was time to accept our fate. Sure enough it was not for another 25-30 minutes that our food came out. My goulash was simply beef vegetable stew and was supposed to come with pita bread and did not. When asked for pita bread the waitress brought out some old Costco rolls that were not good. My wife's salmon was to be on a bed of sautéed spinach but was served with raw spinach...like a salad. Also, while I'm on my soapbox, the music act was a bit tough to listen to. Although talented, the performer continued to swap instruments, from the flute, to the sax, to the keyboard and to the mic. It was a bit overwhelming and just killed the vibe. As some songs played were nice dinner type Christmas songs and others were more suited for 3rd graders to sing to. Wow, this place is lovely. I had no idea they were here. The atmosphere is lovely and very romantic. My husband and I came here for afternoon tea. The service was phenomenal, I felt catered to and pampered. They gave us an impromptu wine tasting. I learned a lot about wines from around the world. They have a Romanian Chardonnay that you must try. They do have a small menu, but they are serving authentic dishes from Eastern Europe. The Deets: Venturing out on a rainy Sunday, I tried Sophie's Grill and Bar off Hwy 55 in Cary. They do take reservations off Open Table but it was not needed on this day. They have a very open space, nicely done with a hint of European flavor. There is a spacious bar front and center as well with plenty of TVs to follow sports action/programs. I was seated upon entering and given the menu. Again, the menu gives an Eastern European impression with some American favorites as well. I chose to start with Potato & Cheese Pierogi with menu description "traditional eastern European fried dumplings, stuffed with cheese, boiled potatoes, butter and seasoning, served with caramelized onions." I liked these a lot, a definite crisp along the edges and tasty ingredients inside. They do appear a bit greasy/oily when they come out but taste very good. For my main choice, I went with their Chicken Schnitzel, menu described as "pickled marinated & panko crusted. Served with mushroom Marsala sauce and mashed potatoes." Again, I liked this one, the flavors were great together and the mushroom sauce made a nice addition. Service was good during my visit and I was checked on several times during my meal. I've been here a couple times, it is a very interesting place! For starters the menu has some very unique items that you won't find anywhere else such as cabbage rolls and other Eastern European dishes. It also has your standard bar food such as burgers and fries which is what I got the last time I visited. The service here is excellent as well, in fact the one waiter is an award-winning former cruise ship host. They also have entertainment most nights, but it's usually later so that it doesn't interfere with people coming here just for dinner. They do have a small outdoor seating area which can be nice depending on the weather. Overall I would highly recommend this place if you want to try something a bit different than the standard bar restaurant. read more

Unfortunately, that is where the positive experience ended. 75% of the restaurant (not a private party room) was held for a party/vendor fair. It was fine at the beginning, but they brought in the dj and then music with explicit lyrics. And service was so slow that it took forever to get my 8 year old fed and out of there. Visited for Easter with my family of 6. We had reservations at 1, but arrived 15 minutes early. As we entered the dining room we were immediately greeted by name and asked to follow the hostess to our table. This may have been the nicest and warmest welcome I have ever experienced at any restaurant. The initial hostess/waitress seemed very nice, but shortly after she left, we were greeted by the head waiter, Simeon. Simeon initially comes off as pompous, as he likes to talk about himself. However, he means well, and is very passionate. He's very accommodating and informative. It was a pleasant experience. We ordered a few apps, a few cocktails, and an entree each. The food and drinks are heavenly! Truly a very delicious meal! The apps are amazing, but small. The desserts are so tasty they did not last 5 seconds in front of us. We ate all of our food with no leftovers. The prices are reasonable. After tax and tip the tab came to $233 for the 6 of us. We will be returning. read more

I am astounded by all the positive reviews! We decided to try Sophie's for the first time and had one of the worst dining experiences in recent memory. While our waitress was friendly, the food was incredibly disappointing and poor quality! We started with the fruit and cheese platter ($14). It consisted of 2 slices of cheddar sandwich cheese cut into pieces and laid out on a plate with one peeled orange, 8 Ritz crackers, and a few wedges of white cheddar. I have never been served presliced sandwich cheese on a fruit and cheese platter before. We also ordered the stuffed figs which were tasty but we were surprised to only get 4 figs for $15. After an underwhelming appetizer experience, we were hopeful dinner would be better. We ordered the Beef Stroganoff and it was awful! No tender beef as described...the beef was a small amount of shredded SteakUms. Greasy and poor quality. Tossed with a few mushrooms and alot of rotini pasta. No savory sauce- it was dry and unappealing. No seasonal vegetables as described on the menu. Took 4 bites and decided to wrap up the evening here. I would not recommend trying this place. We wasted $90 on poor food. We won't be going back. I have to assume maybe something changed recently and things took a sharp downward turn based on positive reviews from the past. read more

Finding Sophie's was a nice surprise. When I saw, "Bar & Grill" I figured it was the usual. Not at all. There were tablecloths and a wine menu that lights up when you open it. The waiter treated us well. My Greek salad with shrimp was like the ones I got in Greece. It was crunchy and fresh. The dressing was extremely light - mostly olive oil with some herbs (just like Europe). The waiter saw me question it and asked if I would like some balsamic dressing. I used just a bit. This salad filled me up. The small shrimp were scrumptious. My husband asked for pork chops. The waiter suggested the schnitzel. My husband really liked it. It had a light mushroom sauce on it. My husband does not like sauces at all. He was using up every last drop of this one between the meat and mashed potatoes. Rather quiet on a Monday night during football season despite the number of televisions and screens they have mounted about the place, but they were all tuned in to different sports channels. Chicken wings were in a sweet and hot sauce that was very good. Tasty and medium meatiness. For main course, I chose the buffalo burger with bacon minus bun. Ordered medium rare, it came out closer to medium well. Still tasty but overdone. Nicely topped and presented well with a good serving of asparagus. No bun or fries as I'm still doing my keto diet. I came here for lunch with a group of 16. They were expecting us and very well prepared for our visit. The table and decorations were just beautiful. A very nice place, plenty of parking and they have multiple TV's going, but no sound, so the atmosphere is great for conversation. I ordered the Greek salad with shrimp. The salad was a good size and fresh, but there were only 6 VERY small shrimp in the dish. It was served with no dressing, so had to wait to ask for dressing. Got the raspberry vinaigrette and it was good. No crackers, no bread, nothing served with the salad, so by 3:00 I was really hungry as there was nothing in the salad that was filling. Others got different dishes, and some portions were a good size, some were not. Not a big menu and there are sandwiches and other salads. A few hot entrees, but they are too costly for lunch. We stopped here while getting new tires at Discount Tire. Just something to hold us over, appetizers and a drink. We were seated right away , we were given a choice for inside or outside, front or back outside dining. We were seated and out server came with water and menus . Explained Sophies and items on the menu for us. What a nice guy, very friendly and had a cool wit to him. As I was walking in he stopped me and asked, you look familiar....I have been mistaken in my life for a few people. Cat Stevens, Burt Reynolds, Mark Spitz, and Sean Connery. My family has spent a fair amount of time touring Eastern Europe, so I was delighted to happen upon Sophie's a few weeks ago! One of the things I most enjoyed the Czech Republic was all the small taverns where you would tuck into a booth to enjoy some excellent local beer (cheaper than water!) and a delicious homemade meal. Walking into Sophie's certainly made me feel like walking into an Eastern European tavern. I was delighted to see that there were a lot of people (being Covid-appropriate, plenty of designated space between groups) and it seemed like a lively place to hang out. This is definitely a place I would come back to to watch a game or meet friends. They had a setup for a band, and I bet that is a lot of fun. My husband and I both ordered the Hungarian Goulash, which is one of my favorite dishes in the whole wide world. I'll be frank - it was not very good. The liquid was very thin (more broth than sauce), and was bland. I could taste the paprika, but none of the richness and depth of flavor one would expect from the dish. Looking at the menu, I believe this is a new addition to the menu, and I would like to chalk this up to being a "recipe in progress". I will certainly return to try other menu items.
