Soram is the perfect place to grab lunch before heading into HMart. At first, the menu might seem a bit limited. But what I realized after eating here twice is that Soram is very *clean* and healthy Korean home cooking - food that is nutritious that makes you feel good after eating. My favorites are the Mandu Guk and buckwheat pancake. The Mandu are HUGE and filled with lean pork and zucchini in a bone broth. Order this with a side of rice, which is very good rice by the way - not the traditional highly processed white rice. Small restaurant on the hmart mall. Visited on early evening on Saturday. No one was there. They seated us pretty quickly. This wasnt an ordinary Korean restaurant. I visited because I heard it's more traditional and not using too much chemical ingredient. Nothing was too spicy nor salty. Everything tasted pretty plain, as compared to other restaurants, but very authentic. I would say everthing tasted like a real homemade food. From the plating to the taste, everything was nicely polished. We ordered dumpling soup and bossam. I haven't had a hand made dumpling in a while. Most Korean and other restaurants use pre-made dumplings which taste the same. I really enjoyed the dumpling. The taste of the soup may be little plain, but guess what?, this taste is normal... We usually get the Myungbean (Chung po mook) and bossam (steamed pork) as appetizers and they never disappoint. Chung po mook is extremely flavorful from perilla leaves, salted seaweed, and perilla oil and super refreshing. This is my favorite! Bossam is super tender and served with spicy radish, few sauce options and pickled lettuce. This dish is extremely hard to master as pork can have gamey taste but Soram def mastered this and my husband absolutely loves this dish! We also ordered Kong biji (ground soybean), galbi tang (short rib soup), and bibimbop. All the dishes were obviously amazing but what I love the most about this place is that everything tastes exactly the same as how it was 10 years ago when I first discovered this place! I came here for lunch with my boss. I was recommended to start with a basic dumpling soup (Mandoo Guk) which is apparently very popular. Had I taken my time to review the options I would have chosen something more spicy. I found the broth in my soup to be incredibly bland. I made up for it with some of the yummy kimchee and a sauce they brought me on the side. The dumplings inside the soup are delicious and there was a lady off to the side making them by hand. Prior to the dumpling soup, they brought us a cold pumpkin soup as a palate cleanser...very interesting! It had an ingredient I couldn't identify...maybe bean paste or mochi flour that gave it an odd consistency and sweetness. The name of the restaurant is very humble, and many Korean restaurants use it, as Soram sort of means "it ain't much, but please look with a smile." It was actually used in letter-writing days to show writer's modesty to elders. Anyways, like all the restaurants due to COVID-19, Soram was currently doing take-out orders, so the pictures weren't expected at 100%, but at least referenced. Ordered: - Small Spicy Braised Beef Short Ribs $27.95 - Ox Knee Soup (also known as the cartilage soup) $14.95 I was surprised to see 3 small pieces of short ribs in the $30 dish. We did order the small instead of the large $47.95, but I figured judging by the price, it would be for for 2 or 3 people. Surely, we did smile, not in a way that was expected perhaps, but yes. Restaurant confirmed that the small short ribs have 3 or-so pieces as to the large has 6 or-so pieces. I think we were still smiling then. The cartilage soup, I can vouch job well-done, but.. they seem to have forgotten to include the salt-pepper. But it is the last drop that makes the spill or it's the last second that counts? People tend to be drawn close to restaurants that are sensible. I was getting the sense that the restaurant is falling behind of the high-end scale that they seem to be aiming for. On the level of instant, but worse.보삼 was very small portion, and really not worth the price. Average flavor at best. Side dishes were basically two big bowls of kimchi and nothing else. I guess they were going for the minimalist approach, which also applies to their service. Service: initially a woman took our order and suggested we order만두 in addition, but we declined. Two minutes later, she came back and said well you need to order more for the number of people you have. I was taken aback by this as I've never encountered this before at a Korean restaurant and I've been to hundreds in my life. During our meal, no one offered to refill our water or asked how things were going. We had to ask for our water to be refilled. we also had to ask for the check. Mind you, this was with a half empty restaurant that was not very busy. Finally, as we left there was no thank you or goodbye as is common practice with Korean restaurants. Finally, my daughter found her in her rice. Based on the reviews, this seems to be one of their staple ingredients. I had bad experience with this place years ago when I found so much hair inside of their famous dumplings. I had cut them in parts to feed my daughter and found so much hair. When I reported to the waitress, she simply took it away without any apology. Well, years after today, wanted to support the local business. I had 30min while waiting for my kids. I wanted something quick to get a bite, so ordered dumpling small size. The owner gave me a nasty look and told me it is an appetizer which can not be one person's order. So I got out. I could order more dishes and pack up the left over, but her amazing attitude just confirmed that this is one wrong business to support. This place serves a true homemade korean dish. The dumpling soup broth is rich, and the dumpling is definitely the best one I had so far in NJ. The dumpling is huge, the filling is savory and juicy. We also had the buckwheat pancake, and it was so good! Also, "Kkong bi-ji" which is a grounded soybean stew, usually served spicy in other restaurants, but this place served plain with a side seasoning, which I prefer, because I like it less salty, (a nice vegan option) . I had the kimchi dumpling soup and the regular dumpling soup in bone broth. I like the kimchi Mandoo (8pcs) better but the broth was lacking them the regular meat dumpling (4pcs) was huge but it really didn't need the bone broth. It was good but not fabulous. Please know what to expect when you come to Soram. While I completely understand the less-than-5-star reviews, I don't think they're deserved. WHAT TO EXPECT: - Very high quality Korean food, but a limited menu. This place specializes in certain dishes and does their best to provide top quality for these dishes - Very high-brow side dishes in smaller quantities: Korean food aficionados may be familiar with the multiple side dish offerings at other restaurants, but Soram provides a smaller offering. Don't be turned off by this, but rather, relish in the fact that you're being offered dishes that require more expensive ingredients, more thoughtful combinations, and take more time to prepare than your standard side dish fare. I always get the Mandoo Gook (dumpling soup) when I come to Soram. The three-four dumplings are large and I honestly can't finish all of them in one sitting. There's pieces of oval rice cakes in the soup as well, making for a filling meal. Add seasoning to taste and enjoy! I also always order a to-go portion of frozen dumplings. $1 per dumpling does seem a bit steep, but considering how large and filled with meat (rather than cheap veggies or noodles) the dumplings are, I'd say they're worth the splurge. This place is never too busy, but does see a consistent flow of traffic. The restaurant shares a parking lot with HMart and there's usually spots open closer to the restaurant. read more

I get home to open my order to discover my order was thrown together really poorly and small pieces of acorn jelly- not worth 15 dollars.
