Very nice comtemporary designed restaurant. Much brighter than the previous restaurants. Greeted by the hostess immediately. Sat on higher chairs (given option for lower chairs/table or higher). The place was very busy for a Sunday evening. We waited almost 5 minutes before our server came by. I was counting down the seconds til we were going to leave. We ordered the Thai chicken fried rice & Chicken Drunken Noodle as usual to sample if this place is legit in our eyes & mouths. After 8 minutes, our food came out hot in large flat bottomed bowls. The portions seemed reasonable. The chicken fried rice had several pieces of white meat chicken, scrambled eggs & nice assortment of veggies. The smell & taste test passed with good amount of wok hei in every bite. My son finished 99% of it. He gave it a 10! My medium spicy chicken drunken noodles had a good amount of heat and very good portion. The Thai flavors of hot, sweet & salty were all there. Ordered the spice tray for more heat & added vinegar-chili for that sour kick to cut through the rich flavors of the noodles. Only problem was that some of the chicken pieces were overcooked and hard & plastic-like. Not ideal but better than undercooked. 8/10 Overall, service was okay but the food was very good! I got the drunken noodles, duck rolls, and chicken spring rolls. Everything was delicious and beautifully plated. The servers were super nice and even packed my leftovers for me! I had to take my dog to the vet, and I noticed there was a newish looking Thai restaurant next-door. I ended up doing carryout and it was delicious. I ended up going back in person on a Sunday and they have brunch. It's a bit unconventional for a Thai restaurant to have waffles, but this place has them. Apparently the chef there used to work at the Ritz Carlton and that's where the waffles come from. As far as Thai food is concerned, it is very good. I wouldn't say it's the most authentic I've had, as they seem to cater towards American palates but it is very good nonetheless. The restaurant is more modern than other Thai restaurants I've been to. One of the things I noticed is they don't have a picture of the King or things that you typically see at Thai restaurants. The staff were very friendly and the vibe was very chill. If you're in the neighborhood looking for Thai food, it's definitely worth a stop. read more

Sorn Thai was a convenient, and not overpriced restaurant, that my friend and I grabbed a late dinner at this past Friday. The interior is modern and clean, with the open kitchen concept. It's located at Chesterbrook Shopping Center that seemed to open up pretty recently, full of modern-looking restaurants and boutiques. We didn't wait too long for our food after ordering, and we wolfed it down since we were so hungry. We shared two entrees between the two of us. PAD SEE EW - 16 +chicken The wide noodle texture was bouncy with a slight chew, which is the ideal texture. It had enough "wok hay" flavor and the soy-based marinade was good. Eggs were fluffy and the Chinese broccoli was crunchy. The chicken was a bit underwhelming as it was dry, but overall, the pad see ew was solid and satisfied my cravings. PANANG CURRY = 17 +chicken The curry was way too salty that we left more than half of it. The chicken was incredibly dry and didn't soak up the curry well (which honestly might have been a good thing since it was so salty). The jasmine rice they gave us was not good. The texture was very mushy and clumpy. Overall, this was disappointing. A bit of a hit of miss. At least the food was reasonably priced. read more

Wow what a treat. Desperately looking for something open at 8:45pm Sunday night and of course most places are closed. This popped up and the kitchen was open until 9:30/45 so we rushed over. Felt very nervous as never had been and had friends from out of town who own restaurants visiting us.... And needed a spot for dinner. The MUST haves - a home made lychee martini with tequila and lime ‍! Amazing ! Papaya salad was fresh and not fishy ! Fresh spring rolls were tasty and had a good peanut sauce. Massuman curry was a HIT deep flavors and tender plentiful beef. THE BEST BROWN RICE EVER !!!!! And the brussel sprouts = a MUST! Incredible dressing !! I didn't love the soup or the pad Thai, both felt one note, way too sweet, and a little gloopy. Also mango sorbet was WAY too sugary and strange texture. Mango sticky rice however was great! Its a nice spot to hang out/have dinner at due to the interior design/vibe. But food was just okay when we tried it. We wanted to try something other than the usual drunken noodles, pad thai, curry etc. So we chose some of Sorn's Obsessions. Below are the dishes we tried: - Curry Puff: Average - Kanon Jeen NamYa: Interesting to try, but I thought it would have a stronger curry flavor and be spicy. It wasn't spicy. Branzino was good and boneless, but the pickled mustard green flavor was stronger than the curry so couldn't really taste it. Still a balanced dish though, just not the flavor profile I was expecting/crave - Moo Hong (Pork Belly Stew): Sauce was good, but the pork belly we had that day was a bit dry. Okay with it not being spicy because the flavor is still good, but the menu had a spicy marking, so would think it'd have a little spice? The bread that came with it was yummy though :) Parking: It's in a shopping center, so there's plenty of parking. Service: The staff was friendly and helpful. read more

Sorn Thai is a solid addition to this end of McLean. I wouldn't call it a destination restaurant but the food we've had is legit, and it's served in a nice dining room with a large, inviting full bar -- something there's not a lot of in this neighborhood. A lot of reviews seen to fixate on the small portion size compared to other Asian takeouts, but this place isn't looking to compete with the bargain Asian takeout places. Plates do indeed appear a bit small but they are generally packed with meat and quite filling (you do have to order a vegetable dish if you want more vegetables, but that's a more authentic version of Thai food). The menu is large, with all the usual southern Thai curries, stir fries, and noodle dishes, plus a lot of Sorn Thai specialties that we look forward to trying. They happily adjust the spice levels to anything you prefer. Service is very friendly and fast. read more

My husband booked a Mother's Day brunch here - and I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. I had not heard of this place before. It's located in a newer strip mall in the McLean area, with the McLean Art Gallery next door. We ordered a combination of brunch items and lunch menu items. For appetizers, we got the standard chicken satay and banana blossom salad, which was a real treat. Very tart, with a good amount of shrimp and chicken. For the entree, I ordered the Ka Prow with Fried Egg, which was truly delicious and spicy. We also ordered the waffles with chicken and smoked salmon with a poached egg. They were out of the honey IPA roll, but substituted it with sourdough. All around, all the food was delicious. The chicken that came with the pancake was a little bland, otherwise good. I highly recommend you check them out. They have some interesting small plates that I haven't seen at other Thai restaurants in the area. read more

Sorn along with other stores has upscaled the chesterbrook shopping center. You enter and it is what you'd want to see: sleek, well decorated, and with some minimalistic and modern look. The service is cordial, attentive, and they make sure your water cup is always filled in case you like to order something spicy and need to cleanse your palate as you keep enjoying their divine cuisine. Now let's get to business, the food! We went to a double date and shared four main entrees. Each one was delicious, well presented, and timely. Each dish had delicate and subtle undertones and I would highly recommend this restaurant. If I had one advice to the chef it would be add more sauce to the panang and be bold (spice it up, McLean can take a bit more). Ok, that was two! The shrimp croquette wasn't good at all; the pork tasted a little sour, perhaps due to the sauce, but my friend and I couldn't finish it. An expensive, nice-looking Thai restaurant at the edge of McLean, Sorn charges a lot for a little (both in portion and flavor). The Haaw-Mohk - a fish mousse - probably had the most flavor of anything we had, but it was mostly spicy. My wife's blueberry spaceship cider was fine, but seems to be only about 4oz in a wine glass, which is pretty paltry for the price. The duck roll was our favorite dish - you can't do duck too badly! The steamed fish with house soy was just a small cut of fish with almost no flavor, and the pad vegetables were pretty bland, too. Went here for their Grand Opening day during dinner time and I was surprised by how busy it was. It's on Friday night but I didn't think this many people found out about this new restaurant in McLean. I love Thai food and was looking forward to try a new one in the area. Just like any new restaurant that just opened, I expect the services not to be great. Service - we were lucky and was able to sit at the last open table. After us there was quite a line waiting for next table to open. They're definitely understaffed here. They could use maybe two more servers. Took about 20 minutes or so before the waitress took our order. I ordered their specialty cocktail and that one took awhile. I guess new bar will do that so that's understandable for me. Food - I'm here for the food and wanted to try something different instead of the usual Pad Thai. The Yen Ta Four noodles tasted lightly sweet. My first time having this dish. I found it's ok. Didn't wow me. The Roti dips for appetizer, the pancakes need to be cooked more. It didn't wow me like the one at South East. As always, when I try a new restaurant and the service and food are not up to par, I will give it another try few months later so they can iron out all the kinks. The only good thing is the food came out fast so that's a plus. Ambience - I haven't been down to this area in a very long time so I forgot which restaurant was here before. A must try are the garlic pepper chicken or beef with the tornado omelette topped rice as well as the Thai congee (perfect for the cold weather season) . These days I dont write reviews much unless I see stupid reviews from people who have a palette built on Wendys Frostys and Chik-Fil-A Polynesian Sauce. This place is an F-ing gem. The restaurant is beautiful, and so is the food. We got a variety of dishes to go, and even the way they pack the food to go is done with care and elegance. If you are used to large portioned over volumed fast Thai Food that exists all over the area, then this is not your place. What this place does exceptionally well is balancing spicy, sour, salty, and sweet which is the soul of Thai Food. 6 Different dishes, they all had their individual complexity and taste. This is not your Panda Express version of thai food, this is what I imagine fine dining Thai Food is like in Thailand. Its really good, it has great balance, and elegance to the food. This is the kind of local hidden gem in the neighborhood that you really want so you can enjoy dining out without having to go anywhere, and then not feeling like crap after eating it. read more

We sat at the table for at least 10 minutes before sever come over to ask what we wanted (and those were her exact words, expected us to order everything the first time she came to the table). No water -- even after one of us asked for it. No offer of a second round of drinks, even though glasses were empty for awhile. Service was brusque and unpleasant, multiple dishes came out cold/wrong temperature, food was well below how it has been on previous visits. This new Thai place in Idylwood Plaza is fantastic. Great menu options, reasonable prices and decent quantities. The ingredients are fresh and meals are delicious (be careful on the level of spice you want..thai spicy is REALLY hot!). The service is attentive and very friendly. The place is clean and neatly appointed with contemporary furniture. It can get loud on busy days and the open kitchen is nice...you can see the cleanliness and food prep. All of the noodle dishes are excellent as well as the usual pad Thai and curry dishes. Parking is plentiful. read more

I read a news article online and decided to come here on opening day. I always try to give any restaurants I try a chance but usually end up disappointed over 90% of the time. This was sadly the case here at Sorn Thai. Our menu for the evening included the following: Grilled Steak NumTok Kua Gling Kanom Jeen NamYa Yen Ta Four Noodle The food here is oddly very sweet; maybe it was intended to be catered to Americanized palates but it didn't sit well with my Asian palate. The steak on the numtok was fairly tough while difficult to chew and would not be a dish I would order again; it was served with a sickly sweet chili lime sauce. The kua gling had good flavor but was on the sweeter side. The kanom jeen namya was tasty (along with the picked vegetables) but the portion size was severely lacking, especially with the rice noodles and fish fillet. I could've consumed three portions easily given the volume of food on the dish. The yen ta four noodle featured (you guessed it) a very sweet pink broth. The portions were quite small (for all the dishes) which makes it difficult for Sorn to compete with every other Thai restaurant in the DMV area that generally serves healthier portions. Regarding the service, it was fairly good but was slow (both in food delivery and attentiveness) due to the large number of customers that started to trickle in heavily by 5:30 to 6 PM. The best option in the DMV for casual Thai food still seems to be Padaek. Solid, reliable, and consistent. I also enjoy the pad thai at MyHome Thai Bistro in Reston as well. read more

Finally we have a Thai restaurant that serve some southern Thai cuisine in this area. They have so many interesting menus, a lot of unfamiliar names, but I'm not complaining. From Moo Hong to Haaw Mhok (didn't know what those are), I tried it, and I like it. I wanted to order more since there are still a lot of food that I've never tried before like Gang Som and Khao Yum, but I have to try those next time instead. Although, the food portion isn't huge like other Thai Restaurants, but with the price, it's very reasonable. The service is great and attentive. The staffs greeted us with smiles and checked on us often. The kitchen is open, so you can see how clean they are. I very much enjoyed it, and definitely be back to try more food. read more

Went go dinner on a Friday at 6, and got a table immediately, but the place filled quickly. We had vegetarian spring rolls to begin, and the sauce was delicious. Had red curry duck which was very flavorful but the portion was small. My wife had Pad as ew, and she enjoyed it but wished there were more vegetables. The place opened in March 14 and it's humming with patrons from McLean and surround areas. The food, service and ambience are outstanding. We tried the roti with curry and butterfly dumplings for Apps and the drunken noodles with beef plus the Chinese eggplant with peppers and chicken as our 2nd entree. The food was delicious. We asked for medium and it was a bit on the spicy side for my wife. So, perhaps ask for a 2 onna scale of 5. The prices are reasonable. I had the absolute pleasure of visiting Sorn on 3/20/2025. From the moment I walked in I was in awe of the decor which is a great sign. There was so much sun light, the flowers were colorful/pretty and the space was open with gorgeous furniture. We were greeted with a smile and were seated in the window which was nice with warmth. My girlfriend and I ordered a coke which came in a can, Thai iced tea, and water. I'm not kidding when I say that was CRISPIEST coke I've had in my life. I like to drink half but I drank the entire thing. My girlfriend loved her iced tea which I didn't try but the vibrant color made me super jealous that I didn't try it now that I think about it. Let me just put out there that the dishes that the food was served on and the glasses we drank out of were beautiful. Little details like that-you can tell there was so much thought that went into this restaurant. For starters we ordered the dumplings, papaya salad, shisito peppers with mushrooms, crab rangoons, and spring rolls. (We were hungry; YES). Everything was literally to die for and I ate an enormous amount. The lime vinaigrette in the papaya salad was to die for. I'm not a fan of mushrooms because of the texture but they were coated in a dressing that made me forget I was eating a mushroom. The spring rolls were a favorite of mine; like spectacular-let me have 14 of them! For entree, I got the basil fried rice with chicken and my girlfriend got one of the curries; I'm blanking on which one but she loved it and would not let me take it. She normally lets me have her food or at least offer Everything was sooo good that I visited again on 3/22/2025. I went with my family. I got the same thing except, I got the drunken noodles and a guava margarita. The drunken noodles were beyond good. My 3 year old daughter loved them! And quite frankly, that was the best and most refreshing margarita I've ever had. My mom ordered a Prosecco which she's already afraid about it being flat; and it wasn't. She loved it! The other new thing I tried was the veggie spring rolls that made me dance in my seat. The customer service was a 100/10 both times I've visited. If you are a foodie considering trying this new spot in McLean I wouldn't even consider it. There are so many better spots in McLean for Thai food. This place is super expensive, has small portions, and all of the food is super bland and flavorless. I ordered the duck roll to start which just tasted like pancake with super sweet duck sauce. The shrimp roll had no flavor. For my main dish I ordered the Pad Prik King, and it tasted like water. Almost no flavor whatsoever. Even the drink I ordered the mango sticky rice cocktail was bland and had an off aftertaste. For an area like nova with lots of foodies I expect this place to fail. It's not worth the visit.
