We decided to try Sosoba while we were visiting Flagstaff since there aren't a ton of Asian restaurant options in the area and it was a cold day so we wanted something warm. The place was a bit busy on a Saturday night, but we only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table for three, which wasn't bad. I will say right off the bat--the staff was incredibly nice and welcoming, which we really appreciated. Unfortunately, the food just didn't live up to expectations. We ordered the karaage to share and it was just okay, adding a side wedge of lemon would help. For our mains, we got the Mic Drop!, tantanmen, and katsu ramen, and all three were disappointing. The broth tasted more like lightly seasoned hot water instead of the rich, flavorful broth you'd expect from ramen. The egg was fully hard-boiled rather than the usual soft, jammy ramen egg, and the noodles were very al dente in a way that didn't feel quite right for ramen. Overall, I'd give it two stars, mainly because of how kind and attentive our server was. I wanted to like this place, but the food just didn't deliver.

Fun place for Bao and ramen bowls. We went for my friend's birthday late at night. Sat at the bar which was a fun place to sit to watch the cooks prep food in the kitchen. The music was on fire and service was quick and friendly. We got the Bao with beef and the hostile takeover and mic drop with beef. The Bao were our favorite. Lots of good flavor. The other two were alright since I'm not a fan of watery soupy food. I'd definitely order two or three helpings of the Bao next time.

I order the Katsu ramen and it was great, my gf order the Mic Drop and that was a whole different story, both the noodles and broth tasted weird. We were sat right in front of the kitchen and we could see everything they were doing, not really appetizing to be honest And the waiter was really rude, almost throwing anything we asked to our seats. The place is nice, really loud at times but is good.

Really great food and great service I wanted to add some spice to my ramen and my server brought me a plethora of different hot sauces to add to it! My wife is vegan and they had a fare amount of options for her to choose from. I will definitely be going back to work my way through the menu so many other apps and entrees I wanted to try!

Food was great , James was so kind , brought us different type of hot sauces to try out when we wanted to add a bit of more spice. Greens could have been a bit fresher , tofu was full of flavor the chopped green onions gave it a nice little crunch to each bite.

My friends and I recently dinned here for dinner as this place is their local favorite. We started off with the edamame appetizer which came out fantastic! We were all fighting for more. Two of my friends had ordered the katsu which they loved. I got a chance to try it and the noodles and broth were great, I'd honestly love a more intense flavor but it was good. My other friend got the gyoza ramen and it was fantastic! I'd definitely say this was the better dish as it had a lot more flavor than the others. I got the hostile take over and I was quite disappointed. The ingredients sounded great but the flavor was definitely lacking. The broth didn't taste like anything but the char from the pepper and beef. The pepper and meat were very lackluster. They were quite charred and that was the overwhelming flavor I was getting. The meat didn't taste seasoned at all, just grilled and chewy. The rice noodles also leaned towards the al dente side. I added soy sauce but the burnt flavor was very overpowering. My friends mentioned that the flavor levels tend to fluctuate each time but I must have gotten a bad one. They didn't even like it, but I'd like to say their meals were good! It was just mine that was quit lack luster. The server and staff were absolutely fantastic and very attentive which was great! The ambiance and decor was also very cool. Again the staff were great, I'd just get something else next time.

This is a mostly high top restaurant serving various types of ramen. I ordered a vegetarian ramen with rice noodles. The broth had average flavor - it wasn't too rich with umami flavor. The fried tofu had an interesting cheese like flavor (maybe nutritional yeast in the batter?). It wasn't my favorite ramen but I'd go back again to try a different menu item.

Only had to wait 20 mins during a busy time. Don't mind the wait, once seated I was handed a pitcher for water. Ordered and waited. Result nice place to sit and talk to guest. Once the food came around I was excited but disappointed. Flagstaff is known for their vegan ramens and "two guys who started a restaurant" kinda vibes. The thing is this ramen tasted like it was vegan? Despite us being chicken broth? I had gyoza within the ramen but was not able to get any of that taste. The brother was watery. I like a light ramen but it tasted, let's say like water with a lil chicken broth like 8% and 92% like bokchoy. I had a nice time but won't be returning. Maybe those who like a less oily and rich broth taste will like it here :))

The staff was sweet and the food looked/tasted great but it was an outrageous amount of time. Not only did it take 30 minutes to even get seated, but the food took over an hour and our sever only checked on us once. We were told it would only be a couple more minutes to get it to go and that was another 20 minutes on top of the hour we had already waited. When the bill came, I was told the vegetarian option I ordered was the only dish not on happy hour and had to pay full price even though it is advertised that all bowls are half off. The food was overall good but not worth the price nor wait at all.

I tried the Katsu Ramen. More of fish miso taste for a broth with noodles that were kind of stale but chewy. I would've liked more chicken. Really nice staff though but I've had better ramen with more authentic broth flavoring and marinated soft boiled egg. Gets busy in the evening and at night.

MicDrop ramen was delicious and unlike anything we have ever had and we do like to frequent lots of Ramen shops. The MicDrop had a lot of umami flavor and complemented the udon noodles nicely. Katsu Ramen had a nice clear broth and lots of veggies. Highly recommend if you're just looking for ramen. read more

To the owners: we love the food! But please teach your staff to be friendlier and a knowledge the clients that come in and pay attention to them while they are eating. Also ask the waitresses to brush up their hair so they don't look like they just rolled out of bed. And for God's sake please clean the place up! Our table wasn't wiped and the waitress saw it and didn't do anything! Wash your windows too please. Otherwise the food was delicious!!! read more

During a Flagstaff trip, my husband and I decided to stop here for lunch. It was nice out, so we sat on the patio. Our waitress was super cool and friendly. When we couldn't decide between drinks, she helped make suggestions and we got into a fascinating discussing about mezcal (which we all love). To eat, my husband ordered the Mic Drop (udon, pork belly, pork broth and such) and I ordered the Hostile Takeover (beef, broccoli, mushrooms, etc) and I subbed the soba noodles with udon. To drink, I ordered the honey and knives. It was delicious! Sweet, tart, and spicy. Just the way I like it. Overall, our meal was good (not the best ramen we've had but still high ranking) and I really enjoyed my drink. If we were craving ramen and in the area, I'd definitely go back. read more

The food was absolutely amazing, everything we tried was not only very aesthetically pleasing, but tasted just as good as it looked. The servers were very polite, they made sure we received everything we ordered. Service was very quick, restraunts we have been to we wait 30-60 minutes for our food, but we probably only had to wait about 15. The mochi and mic drop, are definitely the best foods from what we ordered. I would highly recommend eating here. My family would come again if we weren't just visiting. read more

There isn't much I could order because most of their food is pork products. The drinks are expensive but I got a desert rose and it was good. The layout of the restaurant is very inconvenient and makes the place very easily crowded and they only have one restroom. read more

Tons of choices on the menu! My husband had chicken Katsu udon with spicy pork broth & carnita bao buns. AMAZING! They also have plenty of gluten free options including rice noodles! The staff was super nice and suggested options. We had an early dinner so the 5:00 happy hour was starting as we were leaving and it was packed! When it gets busy you might end up at a high top table/bar. That is no big deal for most people but if you carry a purse it can be annoying. The food is good so plan ahead & get here early or change to a cross-body bag! read more

I live in SoCal and eat Asian food all the time. I've also had legit ramen. This place is DELICIOUS. It might not be totally traditional ramen but they literally say that in their branding. The mic drop ramen and tan tan man ramen were full of flavor. The gyoza is delicious as well. We went here twice while staying in town and weren't disappointed either time. Great location with a nice bar top seating option outdoors. This is the second time we have eaten here, and the menu/quality has changed. Both bowls we ordered had little to no broth, which was disappointing. We also ordered the calamari salad to share, a great combination of flavors and texture, and probably the only dish we would order again from this place. The wait time was long, but they were short-staffed; upper management should improve this aspect asap. The young man that served us was doing the best he could. He was the host, busser, and server and still found the time to check on us during our meal. Again, no reason why a restaurant should put so much pressure on their employees like this on a busy Friday night. read more

This was without a doubt the worst food I've ever eaten in the 55 years of being on this planet. The noodles were overcooked they were like snot you got a small portion of chicken and we're charged $16.75 for a bowl that cost them two dollars to make if that. The plan and simple fact is the portions were small. The food was absolutely gross. If you like eating boogers, then this is your place. read more

Sad to see this place hovering at 3.5 stars! This was excellent by all standards, and I'm from NYC! Service was great. I saw a few reviews pointing to poor service...everywhere has low staff right now. We're in the middle of a pandemic. Frankly the service here was better than most places at any time! Food packed a powerful punch! Spicy and savory. Also a great and wide drink selection. Awesome vibe! Love how it's tucked into the historic alley. Overall 4-4.5 stars, but gotta give them 5 to help their rating! They're far above a 3.5! read more

I had a couple hours in Flagstaff before my flight home and after enjoying the shops I was hungry. I didn't want the usual things so I tried ramen. I had the SUV bowl and added chicken, it was very good! Definitely recommend if you want something unique and casual. read more

Best Happy Hour in town from 5-6pm every day. Can't go wrong with any of the broth bowls. Mic Drop is a Flagstaff classic at this point. Meaty, flavors on flavors, great for any hangover. Fun vibes, good music and nice outdoor sitting area. read more

Cool little place with the vibe of a ski town. Small inside but classic Flagstaff look to the place. Our food was made quickly and the potstickers were solid. I ordered soup with Bulgogi. Came here after hiking Humphreys in snow the other day, I really wanted hot noodle soup for my tired body with some proteins to help me recover from muscle aches. What they have here is nothing close to being authentic Japanese. I knew coming in and wasn't expecting anything authentic in the first place. Tantanmen did sound authentic but I didn't want anything spicy. Friendly server let me taste the soup (in a small hot sake cup), it tasted very good and I would have ordered if I were craving something spicy. Mr Karl Katsu is served with deep fried chicken katsu. Something you would never see in Japan but it's okay. Katsu was actually cooked well, between Katsu, bacon, naruto and egg, gave me enough proteins my body needed. Egg had a very nice flavor to it, pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the egg. Corn and butter with miso ramen broth base made me think of Sapporo ramen. Sapporo ramen inspired dish was time/occasion appropriate for me as I just got back from 20F snow/wind weather from up there in high altitude. The soup helped me warm up. Some ingredients weren't warm enough when served, I would have enjoyed more if broth was warmer. Service was friendly, nice bar like ambiance. read more

It was my first visit to Flagstaff and after visiting a few local bars and the temperature dropping for the evening, this was the perfect place to visit! As you can imagine with the cold temperature and heavy traffic of the holidays this place was very busy! Our server let us know the wait would be 30-40 minutes up-front which set my expectations. It was slammed inside which explains the longer waits. Its amazing - no surprise for the full house! We ordered: "The MIC Drop," Sweet Chile Glazed Udon, Zeng He Ramen and the "Balls of Fire." I didn't get to try the MIC Drop but my husband cleaned his entire bowl and said it had a great broth, good flavor and a healthy portion size. He is a pretty large guy so it's good when he compliments the portion. My friend and I split the Sweet Chile Glazed and Zeng He. We wanted to try something different and we are so glad we did. Even as we kept saying we were so full - we couldn't put our spoons and chopsticks down! The Sweet Chile Glazed Udon had great flavor with a good ratio of noodles, meat and veggies. At first I was cautious to trying the Zeng He but you will be surprised too - it was delicious! If you're looking for ramen but want something different - this is the one for you! A very unique dish and a must try! The Balls of Fire were good too. If you like Mac n cheese with a crunchy texture - you won't be disappointed. It was just that though, a Mac n' Cheese ball, wish it had a little more spicy flavors but I love Mac n Cheese regardless so I was satisfied. I was only in Flag for two days, but I wanted to come back here non-stop! read more

It's not fancy but when it comes to quality of ingredients and service there's no doubt, it's hard to beat! Fresh, fresh, and fresh with house made curry, incredible diversity of flavors and can go vegetarian or not. The location is central and there's good people watching too. Even drinks are well worth the effort. For a quick bite I'm hard pressed to say you can do better in Flag. read more

Ordered take out, and customer service was done well. A physical version of the menus was not available & we would have much preferred this to an online menu only option. The order was done quickly, which seemed to impact the quality of the food that we chose. More attention could have been paid towards cooking, and dishes were over or under done, and the amounts of veggie/protein & sauces were imbalanced. The items did not taste adequately integrated, with the amounts/flavors of veggie/proteins to sauce (sauced heavily, pooled at bottom) for noodle dishes. read more

I'm new in Flagstaff and have intentionally been making the round to try as many bars and restaurants as possible. I still have many to try, but even with that goal in mind, I find myself coming back to Sosoba over and over. It's incredible ramen. That's it. It sells itself. Just go and you'll find yourself doing the same. Pictured is what I get every Friday night. It's the "Mic Drop" with with half spicy broth, half regular broth. Perfect amount of spice for someone who can't take too much heat. The leftover broth's flavor will have you finishing it even if you're already feeling stuffed. Also, shoutout to the server Kristen. She's the bomb. read more

This place was good for a quick stop on the way through town, but I found it a bit bland and our server seemed a bit judgy or maybe just in a bad mood, but definitely not overly friendly. I had the Katsu Ramen. I've had better, but this still tasted good, although not very authentic in my opinion. read more

Dirty, disgusting kitchen. Bad hygiene and sanitation. Waited 45 minutes, sat down and weren't given a menu (no paper menus, we couldn't bring it up on our phone and the waiter said "Well you can go to our website"), weren't given table settings or water. After 10 minutes of trying to get the menu, seeing the DISGUSTING kitchen, and watching terrible hygiene (hand/sweat rags on cutting boards, plenty of cross contamination, and dirty-looking pans and cookware) we got up and left. Honestly, I hate to write reviews like this because the food looked SO good... but I just couldn't even think about eating it with what I saw. If you want to have an open kitchen concept, maybe clean your kitchen??? In 2017, this place violated multiple health inspection guidelines: food contamination, lack of sanitation, and other critical violations. In 2019, they ALSO violated health inspection guidelines: hazardous food temperatures and not having proper hand washing facilities. I wish I could find information for 2020/2021 but I (unfortunately) just saw it with my own eyes. read more

Sosoba is good, and for it being delivered on a snowy night it was great! But it's inconsistent. Last time I got it, it was great. This time my ramens were tppped way differently even though we ordered 2 of the same, and our bao buns were burnt, which is not cool for bao. But for finding good ramen in Flag, I'd recommend. read more

My friends and I were looking for a place to grab dinner when we stumbled across this fusion ramen restaurant. We thought ramen would be perfect as it was such a cold night. Among the four of us, we got to try the tantanmen ramen, micdrop, katsu ramen, and edamame. Our opinions? We thought the ramen was just okay. We liked the broth in the tantanmen and micdrop, but felt like the katsu broth and noodles didn't go well together. Just an FYI - this is a non-traditional ramen restaurant so nontraditional ingredients are used in the dishes. I kind of wish I knew this beforehand (as I prefer traditional ramen), but glad I still got to try out the restaurant. read more

This place was so yummy! I had Mothra and Vegetarian spring rolls with a mango cream soda while I waited for my delayed train. It was raining and I got to watch it's through the window and eat this yummy food. The portions were so big that I took a whole serving with me on the train and woke up in the middle of the night to eat it! Highly recommend this spot! read more

Service was fair, they weren't full, but apparently there was a large party that was keeping our server and the sushi chefs busy. Typical sushi or Japanese restaurant motif, efficient but somewhat spartan. I like the sushi bar with glass so that you can see the fish and watch the chefs prepare your order if you're so inclined. I'll be back the next time I'm in flagstaff.

The portion was generous and the salad was absolutely delicious. They let the flavor of the chevre & pine nuts really shine through by adding a very light olive oil based dressing. We then shared our favorite pizza, the Diavola, which was delicious as always. Their pizza crust is some of the best in the western U.S. I love the convenience of enjoying Pizzicletta at Dark Sky, but I think we'll be coming to this location from now on. We loved the ambiance and slightly expanded menu offered here. Plus, grabbing drinks two doors down at Mother Road before/after is an added bonus!

I honestly could not taste any graham or marshmallow flavor, but it definitely was a stronger and sweeter coffee than the Dark Sky, which is what my friend got. The Dark Sky had very subtle mint flavor, and as acid mint lovers, we wish there would have been more! I'm updating because this place has changed a lot since my first review. When they first opened Chef Josh had his passion in this food. I couldn't eat something and not love it. And it was this way for a long time. But, sometime around Decemeber of last year something happened. I don't know what. I heard that Chef Josh had quit and moved to the East Coast somewhere. What I do know, is that the food quality went down, or rather, that it became VERY inconsistent. Even for some of my most favorite dishes. The noodle dishes are so hit or miss on a day to day basis, that I just can't recommend them. I can go in one day, and they taste almost like they used to, but I go in a week later and it's like the flavor's are gone. Even the balls of fire and the calamari, just, bleh. I've been finding myself coming here less and less over the past 6 months. Whereas I used to come in weekly for lunch and occasionally for a dinner. I find myself coming in once a month, if that, hoping each time that it's the way it used to be. Yo, if you're in Flagstaff, Arizona and looking for some bomb-ass grub, you gotta hit up Sosoba. This spot is seriously off the hook with its unique and legit menu. The Mic Drop dish, man, it's the real deal. So much pork, it's insane! The flavors were totally on point with the perfect balance of savory and spicy. I couldn't get enough of it, for real. Sosoba has got a sick atmosphere, super cozy and rustic with a chill vibe. The crew there is super friendly and knowledgeable, they made me feel like I was part of the fam. They were all about hooking me up with recommendations and answering any questions I had about the menu. Avoid this place at all costs! I used to be a fan of this restaurant, but the quality of both the food and the atmosphere has declined significantly. It's evident that there has been a change in management. The last meal I had was not only unappetizing but also made me sick. When I brought this to their attention, the staff was dismissive and implied that I was just being sensitive. It's worth noting that I wasn't the only one at my table who experienced food-related issues. Additionally, the lack of physical menus is frustrating. Instead of providing menus, they make customers look one up on their phones. I may be in the minority, but I don't always carry my phone with me, especially to be courteous to others at the table. Do you like noodles, good hip-hop (MF Doom, Wu-Tang, Pharcyde), craft cocktails, craft beer, and servers that tell it like it is? Then come visit Forest at Sosoba. Because their happy hour is so awesome (half off everything) we were immediately given a realistic time for how long our food would take. We were starving so we grabbed a quick snack and came back to wait. We had constant attention from employees until Forrest fully took over as our server. He was down to earth, made great suggestions, and didn't lie about how long the food would take. Great place and look forward to trying their Katsu Ramen next time. We walked in and the only table available was dirty, so we walked over to it and seated ourselves. There seemed to be only one server for the whole place which may explain why we were completely ignored. They were not serving The dish they advertised online, so that was disappointing. From a local perspective they should add something new to the menu or change it up. Anyhow we waited and waited to at least order a drink, but the server never came so we left. Having travelled to Japan and experienced all sorts of ramen with different broths, noodles, and toppings, this place was delicious. The *mic drop* was what I had and it was amazing, the added bacon gave it a different taste I haven't experienced, highly suggested. I discovered this place while in town for Overland Expo West 2018. I found it after a OEW Volunteers pub crawl. Partially motivated by beer & partially a lack of dinner. I was surprised to see a restaurant open after 10pm on a Weds night. I really wanted the sushi across from them but they were closed. My favorite place to come get an amazing bowl of ramen. I love ramen, but this is authentic and well cooked ramen. If I had a ton of money I'd probably eat here like 2-3 times a week, but since I don't, I love to come here every 2-3 weeks for a goooood bowl of ramen and a nice drink too. Oh! Traditional? Absolutely not. Incredibly creative and savory? Absolutely. Words cannot describe the how amazing the food is here. For parties of 1 or 2, I recommend sitting at the bar. Hope they keep bringing back the pork belly lettuce wraps - that alone is worth the trip! Service was WONDERFUL - celeste (sp?) is really nice, and friendly. Didn't feel rushed at all, even though we sat for a couple hours when it was pretty busy. read more

The staff at this restaurant is better than anywhere I have ever been. They let us sample three beers. They insisted on us doing this. I will come back and eat the food one day, but the beer specials were on fleek. read more

Try some different noodle dishes - especially the mic drop. They have an entire cart of hot sauces! And better yet, 1/2 off wines on the patio each summer! I think it's just during the daytime read more

Best noodles in town! The cocktails are really fun - bartenders are friendly (next door, same ownership). We love ordering mic drop, as well as pork belly anytime they have it. read more
