Wings and limp fries. Wings were also.dry.
    Christi I.

No. Will not order this food again. It was horrid. Three wings with French fries. Fries were soggy, limp and unappealing. Wings were dry and underseasoned. Potato salad tasted like it came Smart and Final and they tried to doctor it up. Mac n Cheese was gooey, pasty and underseasoned. Fried Catfish was limp and underseasoned as well. This food reads...we don't try very hard. We don't put in the effort with a side of oh, well. I ate 25% of my meal before I threw in the towel...

    $15.00 for this. ridiculous.

Highly disappointed in the food. no flavor. very small portions. $15.00 for basically bite size portions.

We were just heading home from DTLA and decided to yelp restaurants. @this place on Tuesdays, they have a $5 meal 2 leg and 2 sides - I ordered that to try it out and boy it was good for a simple meal. Hubby ordered the pork chop dinner plate and it definitely satisfied his hunger . Enjoy their colorful Kool aid lemonade to make the experience even better. Service is simply 5 stars for us. SHANAE so sweet to serve us. This is the only place I have been where customers were chatty and happy and excited to pick up their orders . We have 3 boys at home waiting for their chicken cause we ordered for them to go !

    Not easy operating a restaurant

Came here because a popular breakfast spot down the street had a 30-minute wait on a late Sunday morning because it was *loaded*. Seats ten (10) comfortably - EMPTY! Within half an hour, about a dozen people came in right after me, to order takeout. Clearly, this is the neighborhood takeout spot: cars driving up, virtually no walk-by traffic in the area. I ordered the catfish breakfast with eggs, cheese grits, rice and gravy, biscuit, and tropical lemonade. Except for the lemonade, everything was dry. No AC. Maybe it was just hot today. No bathroom either. I waited just a little over ten (10) minutes. Even if you're dining in, everything is packed to go. They call your receipt number, and you pick up your bagged food at a service window - I'm assuming this cuts costs on servers and kitchen ware. The cashier (Makaila D) was lovely; the $30 price tag was not, especially after I realized I didn't get the eggs I ordered. My bad...

God the food here was so good. Portions are massive, I had lots of leftovers. Ordered the lunch special with 2pc of chicken legs, mac and cheese, two cornbread muffins and collard greens. $9.99 before tax, after tax came out to $13. It was my first time ever having collard greens but sadly I personally didn't really like it. Not because of the way they made it but I didn't know collard greens has a natural bitterness to it so next time I come here I'll probably get a different side. Definitely doesn't deserve to get a star docked though. Mac and cheese was the best I've ever had, it was SO cheese and flavorful, I highly recommend. Cornbread muffins were moist and delicious with crispy edges. Fried chicken was also really good, light (but crispy) breading, super moist chicken. Service was great, the girl at the front (didn't get her name) was really sweet and attentive, and another guy (I think one of the owners?) was really friendly. Both of them made sure I liked the food. The dining ares is kind of small but super clean, there are no bathrooms but there's a McDonald's right across the street if you need to go. Lots of happy regulars coming in and out.

Food is literally okay. In my opinion it was much better a couple of years ago. Service is satisfactory, ambiance is pretty regular. I feel like soul food in LA just doesn't hit the way it used too. The food was not bad, it was okay.

    They nasty ahh meat loaf

The sides are good but the meat loaf taste like straight dog food or sum like this should not be able to be sold anywhere at all

The fish and greens were really good. The fish was seasoned good, had a good crunch and it was a nice size. The greens were tender, just needed a lil heat. Nothing a little hot sauce can't fix. The yams were sweet, like super sweet. Next time I'll get the red beans and rice.

Oh my goodness the greens are the bomb. And the chicken is even better, can't wait to get back there to taste their Mac and cheese.Service the best young lady was really nice and helpful.

Was worried based off all of the bad reviews... I got the catfish breakfast (eggs with cheese and onions smothered potatoes) my bf got the red velvet waffle chicken special. We're both pleased. Catfish is fried perfectly & he said the waffles are wild. Called and placed the order via phone, ready in 20 minutes. Would order again.

3 pc fried chicken, potatoes, forgot to take a pic of the grits!!!

Alright, it took me a second to gather my thoughts, but here it is…read more I came to Soul Food Shack with my expectations set squarely on the food. I was only in Cali for a short while, and this spot happened to be about 15 min down the street from where I was staying. Perfect location, and I was curious to see how Cali does soul food. From the first bite, it hit me Emotionally triggered as I was transported straight back to my childhood. It felt like I was sitting at the kitchen table in New Orleans, eating my nanny's candied yams, greens, macaroni, and fried chicken. The flavors had that deep, home-cooked love, that is not taken for granted or lost on me, so hats off to the cook! That kind of food doesn't just fill you up; it connects you,and to top it off, the drinks? Man, they serve that real deal kol-aid. The kind I used to drink as a kid. As I was eating, I started thinking about how food ties us to previous & future generations. It's wild how dishes once considered scraps i.e: greens, yams, cornbread, oxtails, are now sought out in restaurants just like this one. These meals are more than just food; they're stories of survival, resilience, and community. But I digress, I know y'all didn't come here for a history lesson in Black culture, so I'll leave it at that. Now, onto the standouts. The mac and cheese and yams? Easily the stars of the plate. I like my yams runny and solid, because I love mixing it with the cornbread. Sweet, savory, soft--that combo hits every time. The macaroni? Seasoned perfectly. Creamy, rich, and not bland like you sometimes get at other spots . That's rare, and I don't take it for granted. Overall, Soul Food Shack gave me more than just a good meal, it gave me a taste of home, miles away from where I grew up. If you're ever in Inglewood and need some food that feeds more than just your stomach, pull up, tap in, eat up.

The best soul food not in Grandma's kitchen…read more My family and I had a 5-star experience at this soon-to-be LA staple. We were greeted at the door by security, who opened it for every customer. His attitude was pleasant, and he had a genuine smile. Not one of those false demonstrations of civility. When you walk in, the smell of the food automatically turns you from hungry to excitedly starving. One of the keys to good food is the aroma from the kitchen. We were ushered to the back, Sunday Church pun intended. Our server got us wonderful drinks. Then we ordered our food, and when those soulful southern dishes arrived, it was the crown jewel of the experience. They looked as good as they tasted. We not only enjoyed the food, but Lonell came and chatted with us. He was genuinely concerned with the quality of our food and service, which was exceptional. On the way out, we asked for a picture and promised to come back whenever we are in the LA area. Please try this for yourself and post your favorite food.

Lonells -- Juneteenth Experience…read more Live music drew us in, but the visit was deeply disappointing. I wrestled with writing this review precisely because it's Black-owned, but the experience spoke for itself. Ambience and service were positives: a warm greeting from Lonnel, sweet waitress, and a friendly bartender. However, beef was unavailable on the day despite Friday/Saturday promises, and the food failed to justify the price. A friend's fried chicken arrived raw--we know what cooked fried chicken should taste and look like, having eaten fried chicken plenty of times. The chef dismissed the concern and offered only a $5 discount, eroding trust in safety and quality. Overall, none of the dishes hit the mark. The hospitality was the bright spot; otherwise, the experience did not reflect the concept or value. I wouldn't return, but hope for improved consistency and safety. Giving it 1 Star for our waitress and the bartender.

The serving size was great! Good portions. My husband and I split one order and it was more than enough for the both of us to share. We each got a delicious pork chop plus sides! Well seasoned, the batter was crispy and flavorful. Goo spices. The candied yams were a good mix of sweet and tangy and decent pieces. The Mac & Cheese was nice and cheesy, thick & seasoned to perfection! I am curious to try the other items on the menu to see how they measure up if it's this good consistently. Also affordable price for it about $25 with delivery fees etc but on the menu it's listed as $18.99 if you go get it or dine in. Glad I tried it! Will be back for more!

The pleasure of dining at Gotta Have It, and I have to say, it was a delightful experience overall,…read morewith a few standout dishes that I'll definitely be raving about! First off, let's talk about the catfish. From the moment I took my first bite, I knew I was in for a treat. The fish was perfectly crispy on the outside, golden brown, and beautifully seasoned. It had that classic soul food flavor that reminded me of family gatherings around the dinner table. The texture was flaky and moist, making it one of the best catfish dishes I've had in a long time. Next up was the mac and cheese, which was another highlight for me. It was absolutely creamy, cheesy, and baked to perfection with just the right amount of crust on top. You can tell they use quality ingredients, and it truly comforted my soul. This is definitely a dish you'll want to savor! The BBQ baked beans were another delightful surprise. They were rich and flavorful, striking that perfect balance of sweetness and smoky notes that instantly transported me back to home-cooked meals. I loved every spoonful, and it's clear that this recipe has been perfected over time. Now, onto the cabbage. Even though they were served cold, I was pleasantly surprised by how good they tasted after a quick pop in the microwave. They had the right amount of seasoning, and the flavors were vibrant and authentic. It's nice to know that quality and taste remain intact, even when they need a quick reheating. The Kool-Aid was also a refreshing addition to my meal. It had just the right amount of sweetness nothing too syrupy or overpowering. It was a great way to wash down the wonderful flavors of my meal. However, I did encounter a bit of a letdown with the chicken wings. While I had high hopes for them, they ended up being overcooked, resulting in a hard and chewy texture. It was disappointing since everything else was so good. I wouldn't order the wings again, but that's the beauty of soul food; there are so many other amazing options to explore! As for the service, it was adequate but could use some improvement. The staff was friendly enough, but I felt they could have been a bit more attentive. A little more engagement would have enhanced the overall dining experience. In summary, I highly recommend this food spot for the catfish, mac and cheese, and BBQ baked beans. It's a comforting, homey place where you can find some fantastic dishes that will make your taste buds sing. Just skip the wings, and I think you'll leave with a happy heart and a satisfied belly. I'm already looking forward to my next visit to dive into more of their delicious offerings!

The Fries were seasoned and had a crispy texture with a soft bite. And the Macaroni Salad was simply next to home made good. I am forever looking for new soul food spots. We need something in the SGV. So I googled and found…read morethis place. Can we say "hole one the wall" boys n girls?! This was literally a shabby little hole in the wall joint that was scummy and even with ordering a variety of items, only one thing taste good. It took soooo long for the food to be brought to the table. I think they probably have it frozen and they defrost it after you order. There's no way you can have that huge of a menu and have all that food cooked fresh daily. Also the server was nice, but once she served us, she never came back to see if the food was good, if we needed condiments, or refills. I asked for a refill when she brought the check. I ordered their smoked ox tails with rice n gravy, yams, dressing, and mac n cheese. The worst oxtails I ever had. Dried out and over smoked. They seemed like no seasoning other than the smoke. The gravy was bland. Nothing much more to say about it. I guess they got the rice right, but who messes up rice if you have a cooker. So the rice was itself was good. The mac n cheese was just one big clump of nastiness. It was lukewarm and all clumped together. Yuck! The yams were straight canned. Not bad but if you were expecting real home cooked yams, you need to look elsewhere. I think the dressing was boxed cornbread dressing. Again no seasoning, no onions, no bell pepper, no nothing. And they poured that bland gravy on top. My mom ordered red beans and rice and pigs feet. The pig's feet were supposed to be oven baked, but they were also smoked, so again, not what we were expecting. And the red beans weren't bad, but they certainly weren't what I was expecting. No meat in them at all. And they had chunks of potatoes. Who puts potatoes in red beans? Not southern style that I am familiar with. You get a choice of hush puppies, cornbread, or biscuit with your meal. I ordered a biscuit which was more like a hockey puck. And we didn't even try the hush puppies. For drinks mom ordered lemonade and had to mix it with water. I ordered a sunset which was ok. A little watery but ok. When I asked for a refill, they were out so I got a purple rain and it taste like over sweetened grape koolaide. I have one redeeming factor and that's the fried catfish. It was soooo good. The batter was crispy and hot on the outside and the fish was flaky on the inside. It was perfectly seasoned. Up there in the top five of catfish that I've ordered from other places. If I had ordered just that, I would have given a 5 star rating. But because of the other food, I'm giving a two star rating At first I thought I would order a gumbo to go to have for later. But after experiencing the food served today, mom and I passed on the gumbo that we initially thought we would leave with. I ordered a peach cobbler to go and it taste like it was made with fresh peaches. But the dough was too heavy for my taste. So overall...would I go back?? No no never. Still on the hunt for a good soul food place near me.

My family and I came late in the day and that may have been our first mistake. We could not eat inside. We ordered various items including oxtails, macaroni, yams, peach cobbler, smothered pork chops, and chicken wings. Two of the people got sick... one was on a later flight and had to go to the hospital by ambulance upon landing. The chicken wings were cold, the peach cobbler was all sugar (barely any crust), the oxtails were not bad. I was able to sample that and agreed that it was actually pretty good. The macaroni didn't have taste. The person who got the smothered pork chops was sick all night. Sadly, most of our food was thrown away because it just wasn't good. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant at all, but as I said, with the reviews that are prior to mine, hopefully it was just a bad day.
