We probably should've left then, but we were hungry and wanted something other than drive-thru food. The woman at the counter greeted us as we waited behind another couple. I asked about the dinner menu posted front and center at the register, and she mumbled something I couldn't hear. I asked if the portions were meant for sharing, and she responded in an annoyed tone, "I just told you that's the old menu. We don't use that one." If that's the case, then why is it the first thing I see when I walk up to the counter? Why the attitude? Just take it down to avoid confusion! Anyway, I nodded and said okay and she pointed to another menu. We ordered the meatloaf, mac and cheese, cabbage, and collard greens. We shared everything and got a Kool-Aid drink too. The meatloaf was barely edible and drowning in a salty, gross gravy. The tiny cornbread biscuit was dry and so hard on the bottom. The greens were crazy salty and I love greens but these were beyond extra seasoned! The cabbage and mac and cheese were just okay, so we ate those and tossed out the rest of the food. Came here because a popular breakfast spot down the street had a 30-minute wait on a late Sunday morning because it was *loaded*. Seats ten (10) comfortably - EMPTY! Within half an hour, about a dozen people came in right after me, to order takeout. Clearly, this is the neighborhood takeout spot: cars driving up, virtually no walk-by traffic in the area. I ordered the catfish breakfast with eggs, cheese grits, rice and gravy, biscuit, and tropical lemonade. Except for the lemonade, everything was dry. No AC. Maybe it was just hot today. No bathroom either. I waited just a little over ten (10) minutes. Even if you're dining in, everything is packed to go. They call your receipt number, and you pick up your bagged food at a service window - I'm assuming this cuts costs on servers and kitchen ware. God the food here was so good. Portions are massive, I had lots of leftovers. Ordered the lunch special with 2pc of chicken legs, mac and cheese, two cornbread muffins and collard greens. $9.99 before tax, after tax came out to $13. It was my first time ever having collard greens but sadly I personally didn't really like it. Not because of the way they made it but I didn't know collard greens has a natural bitterness to it so next time I come here I'll probably get a different side. Definitely doesn't deserve to get a star docked though. Mac and cheese was the best I've ever had, it was SO cheese and flavorful, I highly recommend. Cornbread muffins were moist and delicious with crispy edges. Fried chicken was also really good, light (but crispy) breading, super moist chicken. Service was great, the girl at the front (didn't get her name) was really sweet and attentive, and another guy (I think one of the owners?) was really friendly. me and my family live really close to the Soul Food Shack and we come here often because the food is good. However, the poor customer service I received from a young lady by the name of RYAH, really left a bad taste in my mouth. I had needed a large size of green beans and was told by a very helpful worker that they needed to check the price and if they can make the order. I was told they would be able to work with me and that I could come in to make the order. I got off of work and decided to call which was around 6 or 7. The young lady who answered told me something totally different and said that they weren't currently taking catered orders. I told her i Spoke with someone and they told me that I can come in to place the order. The young lady then told me to call tomorrow. So I did. I spoke with a helpful and pleasant worker by the name of Sita who told me she would leave a note and that I could come in that day to pay and place the order. I told her that I would be able to come after I get off around 6. When I arrived around that time, I explained my situation and that someone left a note for me. The young lady there had her phone out, barely made eye contact with me and told me that they're not taking catered orders. I then told her that I spoke with someone who said they left a note to explain my siruation. She then said "ain't nobody left no note". I asked if I could speak with someone like a manager. She then pretended to go in the back came right back and said "ain't nobody here and you have to place an order a week in advance". I was upset and confused all at the same time. But regardless, that worker was extremely rude, no customer service skills and never apologized or even attempt to see How she could help. i asked her name and she said it as if she knew nothing will happen. Her whole demeanor came off as if she can talk to or act however because nothing will happen. Just went today (our third time) and the food was delish as usual. Had the catfish, and like the last reviewer, it was fried perfectly! It even had the really crunchy part that is usually the tail of the fish, but this is a fillet so of course there is no tail, but it was still crunchy and it has this taste to it. You know what I'm talking about if you eat fried fish tail! Had the cabbage for the first time. Very tasty. Sweet potatoes, YUM. In general, everything was on the salty and sweet side for my taste, but I know that is generally how they make southern food, so it's ok to have a little extra salt/sugar once in awhile. Their level of salt is actually less than other southern food that we have eaten, so... We only do takeout, but have never had a problem with a rude cashier. In fact, they have been much nicer than most places. Maybe, by luck, we've gotten a different cashier, or maybe the cashier was having a bad day with other customers, or maybe, it was the, ahem, customer. Just saying... The interior was OK and the service was average. But unfortunately, the food absolutely did not work for me. The shrimp and grits was very far from authentic and tasted more like a fast food version of the dish. I forced myself to finish it. The fried pork chop was OK. After I left, I felt very nauseous to the point that I had to pull over and buy water somewhere to chug as soon as possible. The girl at the front was nice but that's it I went yesterday and got the 2 piece chicken lunch and I was so mad because I only got Mac and cheese and chicken. Everything was full of grease. I've never seen Mac and cheese that oily in my life it felt like eating spoonfuls of canola oil. I can also tell they make a roux and don't shred their cheese because it has a powdery coating. Do yourself a favor and shred blocks of real cheese. Also there was almost no flavor The chick was also full of puddle of grease but somehow still very dry. It was somehow too salty but also lacked flavor from other spices. I ultimately went home and drained the oil and had to add more cheese to the Mac and re-season it to make it edible. The sugary cream cheese icing on the waffle , the soft texture , subtle hint of cocoa and lightly crisped edges. I was skeptical at first, but I was definitely sold on the flavor, it was soo good there is no need for syrup!!! The chicken was fried perfectly seasoned with a profound depth of flavor even to the bone, very crunchy, I mean really crunchy!!! This was my second and final visit. The staff gives off a very distinct DMV energy--unenthusiastic, unwelcoming, and clearly not interested in educating customers about the menu or delivering a positive dining experience. The food itself is inconsistent at best. The yams were overly sweet and had the texture of mashed paste, more sugar than substance. The catfish has been hit or miss--unreliable in both taste and quality. To add to the disappointment, I was told they no longer offer a lunch menu, which wasn't clearly communicated prior to ordering. I ordered the chicken dinner which came with three pieces and three sides I believe. The red beans and rice were goood! The cornbread, yes mam! It was fluffy and warm. The mac and cheese was ok, I didnt like the oversized noodle or cheese used. The greens were not bad at all. The chicken was a bit over done, the crust wasnt crunchy but the meat was tender. If I could use three words to describe this food, it would be disgusting, bland and unappealing. After coming back from a few weeks in the south, I was missing some good southern comfort soul food. I ordered the fried catfish, sweet corn, Mac & cheese and their signature "pimp juice", which is blue raspberry kool-aide with lemonade. Let's talk about the fried catfish.... it was so dry and over cooked that I had to use the pimp juice to wash down every bite. The batter to fish ratio was awful, I basically was eating fried batter. Sweet corn. You can't really mess up sweet corn so I will at least give them that. Now I am a huge Mac & cheese connoisseur, and this Mac and cheese made me want to weep. It looked and tasted like they boiled the noodles for one hour! It was mushy and flavorless. I was looking forward to the Mac and cheese more than anything else and they broke my heart. The pimp juice tasted just like I imagined, a sugar attack. It was very delicious but anyone in their right mind should not drink that regularly if they want to keep all of their limbs (diabetes).
