Service was nice, effortless and quick. We ordered the soul fries, salmon and shrimp and wings with fries and zucchini. The soul fries were okay. I didn't try them but my son said the chicken was chewy and the Mac and cheese flavoring didn't pair well with the fries. Fried salmon was okay. It is a soft fry and the shrimp were on the small/medium side and chewy. I enjoyed the barbeque beans and the Mac and cheese was fine. It isn't the best and it isn't the worse. I'd put it in the middle. The wings were just average. I can remember the flavors I got and they weren't popping. I could differentiate between the two. The fried zucchini was mushy but the fries were delicious. They forgot all the sauces for the salmon, fries, zucchini. If I return, (and that is negotiable) I will try something different. Then, again, maybe I won't return.

Seen this place on TikTok. It was in the cut, if it wasn't for the sign you probably wouldn't know it was here. Completely empty inside. While we were there people did go in and out picking up To Go Orders I'm assuming. Kinda pricey, 2 meals was about $60, drinks not included. The sides on the menu were not the actual sides they had in house today. I wanted Mac & Cheese w/ green beans but had to get baked beans because green beans weren't available that day. I ordered fried Salmon plate. My sister got catfish plate w/ wings. She got the sweet hot wings I believe. The food was SO GOOD. The Mac was perfection. The baked beans were really good, so flavorful. Loved that they had meat & bell peppers. The fried catfish was delicious. It tasted like the crispy skin off of fried chicken BUT on salmon 10/10. Definitely recommend.

If you don't know you need to find out this southern style food is amazing and you gotta have it grill that is lol I must try spot on Sundays. They give you cornbread with your plate. Don't miss out.

One of the best soul food spots in LA. EVERYTHING IS FIRE & YOU WONT REGRET IT! Not only was the food great, the service was great.

Tried due to the social media hype and I'm very disappointed. I had fish & shrimp, Mac & cheese, and rice & gravy. SMH, fish and shrimp salty, Mac & cheese dry and have to had been cooked days prior, rice sticky and gravy no favor. My husband had chicken-sweet chile, yams and cabbage. Chicken was prepared good but the sweet chile was not tasteful. Yams and cabbage hard pass.

The food is on 10 here!!! Delicious and cheesy Mac and cheese. The yams have the perfect amount of sweetness. Get that fried salmon. I really enjoyed it and add some chili oil to give it a kick and flavor. Their wings go crazy. I like the spicy honey but also enjoyed the garlic Parmesan. That strawberry banana pudding is next level. The baked beans and the collard greens are also tasty. You guys should check this place out. The staff is amazing. They have room to sit down and eat. Perfect place for family, date or takeout.

Definitely impressed by 'Gotta Have It', its hold true to its name. The marketing behind their restaurant is immaculate cause its all over my IG feed, and I was very happy to finally try it. The service was cool, They felt very personable and you can tell they are very focused on their food and almost nothing else. Thats fine by me! The food took a while to come out but that was also fine, just meant it was going to be hot. I order a side of fried zucchini with my Fried Salmon plate w/ Mac and Yams (my favorite combo). The mac was impressive and the young lady talk up the sweetness of the candied yams... eh, BUT they were also very impressive. My friend got the fried shrimp plate with greens and yams. She agreed that the yams were delicious but did NOT have any good things to say about the greens. I guess cause it wasn't any meat in them, lacked some flavor. They have a lot of different lemonade options which ii love and can get crowded. The salmon & shrimp were a little overcooked, but Id rather have that than cold food any day. I heard great things about their wings, so i cant wait to try that next !

The food was cold, soaked and juice couldn't even eat it horrible service. We couldn't even get a refund

Food was cold all food was soaked in juice, not able to eat wouldn't give a refund had to go back to have them remake it taking time out of my day and my gas going up there two times

over the weekend I had the pleasure of visiting gotta have it grill and when I say not only was the food amazing the customer service was great. I am a chef myself and this food was perfectly prepared not overly seasoned or salty but seasoned to perfection with flavors through and through. I had the fried salmon and honey hot wings mac&cheese and greens we also had the fried shrimp and lemon hot wings. I can't wait to come back and try the spaghetti and catfish We drove all the way from Palm Springs to try this place out and it gets 10/10 from this Chef fyi: dine in and relax or call ahead ...because this is not fast food great food takes time thanks

This is the day I was there with my family. Posted on their IG

Me and my family came, we were a pretty large party ( about 10 of us) but the service was so bad we all ate at separate times, the cornbread ( which was good) came out after several people had already eaten. ( most ppl want their cornbread with their food) I got my food last and it wasn't cooked properly, I understand she wanted to get the food out since we waited so long but my smothered pork chop wasn't cooked enough, it was very tough and the gravy was very thick, it just wasn't enjoyable at all. Despite waiting, I would've waited longer for properly cooked pork chops. I got greens and cornbread dressing I think- it was ok but gravy was dropped into my greens which wasn't appealing to me. It could've been an off day but I didn't enjoy the experience at all. *someone from the business contacted me, they didn't contact me to ask how they can make the customer experience better or anything constructive. They contacted me to dispute that I was there. Pure foolishness when they literally have a picture of our party on there IG. I consider this behavior to be disturbing at best. I've included the picture below.

Alright, it took me a second to gather my thoughts, but here it is…read more I came to Soul Food Shack with my expectations set squarely on the food. I was only in Cali for a short while, and this spot happened to be about 15 min down the street from where I was staying. Perfect location, and I was curious to see how Cali does soul food. From the first bite, it hit me Emotionally triggered as I was transported straight back to my childhood. It felt like I was sitting at the kitchen table in New Orleans, eating my nanny's candied yams, greens, macaroni, and fried chicken. The flavors had that deep, home-cooked love, that is not taken for granted or lost on me, so hats off to the cook! That kind of food doesn't just fill you up; it connects you,and to top it off, the drinks? Man, they serve that real deal kol-aid. The kind I used to drink as a kid. As I was eating, I started thinking about how food ties us to previous & future generations. It's wild how dishes once considered scraps i.e: greens, yams, cornbread, oxtails, are now sought out in restaurants just like this one. These meals are more than just food; they're stories of survival, resilience, and community. But I digress, I know y'all didn't come here for a history lesson in Black culture, so I'll leave it at that. Now, onto the standouts. The mac and cheese and yams? Easily the stars of the plate. I like my yams runny and solid, because I love mixing it with the cornbread. Sweet, savory, soft--that combo hits every time. The macaroni? Seasoned perfectly. Creamy, rich, and not bland like you sometimes get at other spots . That's rare, and I don't take it for granted. Overall, Soul Food Shack gave me more than just a good meal, it gave me a taste of home, miles away from where I grew up. If you're ever in Inglewood and need some food that feeds more than just your stomach, pull up, tap in, eat up.

The best soul food not in Grandma's kitchen…read more My family and I had a 5-star experience at this soon-to-be LA staple. We were greeted at the door by security, who opened it for every customer. His attitude was pleasant, and he had a genuine smile. Not one of those false demonstrations of civility. When you walk in, the smell of the food automatically turns you from hungry to excitedly starving. One of the keys to good food is the aroma from the kitchen. We were ushered to the back, Sunday Church pun intended. Our server got us wonderful drinks. Then we ordered our food, and when those soulful southern dishes arrived, it was the crown jewel of the experience. They looked as good as they tasted. We not only enjoyed the food, but Lonell came and chatted with us. He was genuinely concerned with the quality of our food and service, which was exceptional. On the way out, we asked for a picture and promised to come back whenever we are in the LA area. Please try this for yourself and post your favorite food.

Lonells -- Juneteenth Experience…read more Live music drew us in, but the visit was deeply disappointing. I wrestled with writing this review precisely because it's Black-owned, but the experience spoke for itself. Ambience and service were positives: a warm greeting from Lonnel, sweet waitress, and a friendly bartender. However, beef was unavailable on the day despite Friday/Saturday promises, and the food failed to justify the price. A friend's fried chicken arrived raw--we know what cooked fried chicken should taste and look like, having eaten fried chicken plenty of times. The chef dismissed the concern and offered only a $5 discount, eroding trust in safety and quality. Overall, none of the dishes hit the mark. The hospitality was the bright spot; otherwise, the experience did not reflect the concept or value. I wouldn't return, but hope for improved consistency and safety. Giving it 1 Star for our waitress and the bartender.

Ordered a medium Gumbo w/Rice a 3 Seafood Combo Plate that was composed of Fried Shrimp Fried Oysters and Friend Red Snapper and a slice of Corn Bread. Also ordered three Deserts. The Fries were seasoned and had a crispy texture with a soft bite. And the Macaroni Salad was simply next to home made good. Ray gave me a taste sample of the Gumbo that was also satisfying and hitting the mark. Had the slice of Pound Cake that evening for desert and it was tasty as well. The German Chocolate Cake I tried the following evening for desert and I rate it fair. Had that with the Gumbo of which I enjoyed. I am forever looking for new soul food spots. We need something in the SGV. So I googled and found…read morethis place. Can we say "hole one the wall" boys n girls?! This was literally a shabby little hole in the wall joint that was scummy and even with ordering a variety of items, only one thing taste good. It took soooo long for the food to be brought to the table. I think they probably have it frozen and they defrost it after you order. There's no way you can have that huge of a menu and have all that food cooked fresh daily. Also the server was nice, but once she served us, she never came back to see if the food was good, if we needed condiments, or refills. I asked for a refill when she brought the check. I ordered their smoked ox tails with rice n gravy, yams, dressing, and mac n cheese. The worst oxtails I ever had. Dried out and over smoked. They seemed like no seasoning other than the smoke. The gravy was bland. Nothing much more to say about it. I guess they got the rice right, but who messes up rice if you have a cooker. So the rice was itself was good. The mac n cheese was just one big clump of nastiness. It was lukewarm and all clumped together. Yuck! The yams were straight canned. Not bad but if you were expecting real home cooked yams, you need to look elsewhere. I think the dressing was boxed cornbread dressing. Again no seasoning, no onions, no bell pepper, no nothing. And they poured that bland gravy on top. My mom ordered red beans and rice and pigs feet. The pig's feet were supposed to be oven baked, but they were also smoked, so again, not what we were expecting. And the red beans weren't bad, but they certainly weren't what I was expecting. No meat in them at all. And they had chunks of potatoes. Who puts potatoes in red beans? Not southern style that I am familiar with. You get a choice of hush puppies, cornbread, or biscuit with your meal. I ordered a biscuit which was more like a hockey puck. And we didn't even try the hush puppies. For drinks mom ordered lemonade and had to mix it with water. I ordered a sunset which was ok. A little watery but ok. When I asked for a refill, they were out so I got a purple rain and it taste like over sweetened grape koolaide. I have one redeeming factor and that's the fried catfish. It was soooo good. The batter was crispy and hot on the outside and the fish was flaky on the inside. It was perfectly seasoned. Up there in the top five of catfish that I've ordered from other places. If I had ordered just that, I would have given a 5 star rating. But because of the other food, I'm giving a two star rating At first I thought I would order a gumbo to go to have for later. But after experiencing the food served today, mom and I passed on the gumbo that we initially thought we would leave with. I ordered a peach cobbler to go and it taste like it was made with fresh peaches. But the dough was too heavy for my taste. So overall...would I go back?? No no never. Still on the hunt for a good soul food place near me.

My family and I came late in the day and that may have been our first mistake. We could not eat inside. We ordered various items including oxtails, macaroni, yams, peach cobbler, smothered pork chops, and chicken wings. Two of the people got sick... one was on a later flight and had to go to the hospital by ambulance upon landing. The chicken wings were cold, the peach cobbler was all sugar (barely any crust), the oxtails were not bad. I was able to sample that and agreed that it was actually pretty good. The macaroni didn't have taste. The person who got the smothered pork chops was sick all night. Sadly, most of our food was thrown away because it just wasn't good.
