We called our visit to Soulman's Bar-B-Que the Super Chuck Wagon Challenge... LOL So, the family decided to try out Soulman's Bar-B-Que for a little "meat lover's paradise" dinner. We rolled in, and the place not super busy-- there seemed to be a lot of take out orders... apparently, there's no shortage of people who appreciate a good slab of ribs and a side of southern hospitality. The staff was super friendly, and despite the crowd, they were hustling like pros. We were seated pretty quickly, and we were ready to dive into the BBQ goodness. We decided to go big, so we ordered the "Super Chuck Wagon"--a family-style feast with 2 lbs of meat and a boatload of sides. Now, when they say 2 lbs of meat, they aren't messing around. It felt like they slaughtered an entire farm for us. There were ribs, pulled pork, brisket, sausage... basically everything a carnivore dreams about. My wife and daughter? Well, let's just say they weren't in a "feast like it's your last meal" mood. They barely touched their plates, but that's okay--more for my son and me. My son, who's 15 and in that "I eat everything in sight" phase, and I were determined to conquer this mountain of meat. We demolished about half of the 2 lbs of meat, but I'll be honest--I kind of lost track of time because the ribs were so good I went into a BBQ trance. The ribs? Delicious. Tender, smoky, and just the right amount of sauce--like the BBQ gods themselves had handed them down from Mount Meat. The pulled pork? *Oh boy*, that was some next-level goodness. You could pull it apart with just a fork, and it practically melted in your mouth. I felt like I was getting a warm hug from the pork itself. Now, the sides were also pretty stellar. The green beans were perfectly cooked--not soggy, not too crispy, just right. The ranch house beans had a nice little kick to them--like a secret ingredient you can't quite put your finger on. And the potato salad? *A masterpiece*. You know that feeling when you eat something and think, "I could live on this"? That was the potato salad for me. My son and I also threw in some French fries because, hey, we were on a roll. You can never go wrong with fries. Overall, it was a great meal, and we had a blast. The Super Chuck Wagon was more food than we could handle, but I wouldn't have traded it for anything--except maybe for more of those ranch house beans. My wife and daughter might not have eaten much, but hey, that just means more leftovers for me tomorrow. And considering how much we ate, we'll be feeding the whole neighborhood for days. I ordered the customized bowl and really liked it because you can choose 2 vegetables as side and it made a really good balance. I ordered spicy potatoes and cabbage and both were so good! I live in the Austin area. However, I am originally from Plano. I typically go through the drive-thru when I come to town. I have yet to get a dry brisket sandwich. It's always been moist and juicy. The order takers are very engaging and pleasant. When I head back to Austin, I always pick up 2 brisket sandwiches for the ride back home. The spicy bbq sauce is good in my opinion. Soulman's bbq is one of my favourite restaurants in the bbq world, primarily because the name is utterly inexplicable. I also enjoy the fare presented in an easily comprehensible manner. The victuals are positively gustable (even if their shredded brisket is rather inclined to fancy itself the soil in Death Valley). Apart from the aridity of the beef, the employees are amiable and reliable. Overall a good place, and a member of a good franchise. read more

It was my first time visiting your establishment after passing it by for years. My rating would have been an easy "5" star if not for the following. The potato wasn't worth $11 because it was SUPER small. I was expecting to see a Jason Deli potato for that price but what I received was a side potato. The potato also wasn't cooked through. Luckily, I brought my meal home because it needed a real fork. The potato was yummy, giving credit to the meat. And the sauce was PERFECT. Did I say, perfect. I am not a big BBQ fan so I am not sure if I would go again because of the price and size of the tater, but I did enjoy it. I would pay $15 for the spud if it was indeed a HUGE potato. read more

You queue on the drive through side which is opposite from where you walk in, not the main door side and back track to get beverages. I get why they did it but it's awkward. Decent for a drive-thru BBQ spot, but the food was pretty generic. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich which came with 2 sides (baked beans & potato salad). I also ordered a slice of Texas toast which turned out to be a thin, flimsy piece of buttered bread (no garlic, no seasonings, nothing). The backed beans had pieces of meat & thickly sliced onions floating around in them. They were not tasty at all & very watery. One of the nicest folks I encountered in Dallas. It was my first time in Dallas and we wanted to try some BBQ. I got the baked potato with brisket. Bomb! We dined in and they played worship music and I was so in awe. I've never been at a food establishment where worship music was the playlist. Made me love the place even more. The guy with the bald head, sorry don't remember his name, was so sweet and gave us a warm welcome as we traveled from Cali to TX. I have been at this place couple times. This time it was a very disappointing. I got my regular the chuck wagon with Mac and chz and green beans. But when the young lady was prepping my order I notice she grabbed old and dried Mac and chz. I ask her if she could have me some fresh one. That's when the lady that refills the containers ask why I didn't want the one already served for me. When I explain she turned around and point blank make the comment about me being stupid. If I'm paying for food the one thing I want it's fresh food. Not dried food or leftovers. This kind of comment really make me upset. The young lady apologized (she didn't have to) she's very friendly. Maybe the manager or the owner of this place will need to check on that kind of comments. read more

We just ordered a bunch of unseasoned food from this place lol. Their Ranch beans would have been good had they been cooked & seasoned. The person making them today chopped (pico?) the onions, cilantro, tomatoes & dumped it into the pot of soft cooked beans. The spicy potatoes were unseasoned too but the onions & jalapeños were cooked well in them. :) Their stuffed potatoes are baked with lots of butter but no salt. I was craving Soulman's and found o e close to me that I have never been to before, in Allen. It was 3pm and hadn't eaten all day. I ordered their two meat plate special with ribs and a hot link. After my meal I went to get a to go box. The gentleman behind the counter asked "how much as everything". I hesitated to respond as again it was way past the lunch hour and way to soon for dinner, though I thought I should be honest, the meat was incredibly dry and never had that experience at other locations. But understood given the time of day. I go back to my table and soon the Manager was standing at my table introducing herself and had a container of fresh hot links and genuinely apologizing. We compared what I received with the order and what she brought and you could definitely see the difference. I thanked her and insisted I was not expecting free food, however she insisted, thanked me for visiting her location and walked off. I then proceed to hear her tell her employees to pull all meat from the serving line and state we only serve fresh food. I was like WOW, there is one true Manager who cares not only about Customer Service and the quality of their food. A few minutes later, she was at my table with replacement ribs. Again, I said it was completely unnecessary, but she insisted. The Allen facility has earned my business for life and the wonderful human being of a Manager has renewed the little faith I have in human beings. This was my first time in Allen Texas and we wanted some bbq. I got the 1/2 chicken special with 2 sides. The cabbage was very tasty and seasoned just right. As for the chicken, it could have definitely been cooked a bit longer. When we were asked about our meal, I did let them know about the chicken and asked if they could cook it longer and he informed me that he could give me a piece that had been cooked longer. Very pleased and I would recommend this restaurant if you are looking for some home cooked food. read more

I just recently moved here and I have gone to like 3 bbq spots and this place is definitely in the running for the top spot. The staff was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. The meat portions were large and amazing as it is weighed out. The sides are pretty tasty as well. The banana pudding was perfectly made not to sweet and not too mushy and I cannot forget about the pecan pie!! I'd go back just for that!! Several weeks ago I went thru their drive thru and ordered the three meat plate (all sliced beef) The manager on duty told me I could not order that option. Tried to explain I've always ordered that combo in the past since they opened in this location, but was still refused to be served three sliced beef. Called corporate office to complain and was contacted by their regional manager over this issue. After a few weeks, I decided to give this place one more chance and did order the three meat plate (all sliced beef). What I actually got was just three slices of beef. Are you kidding me? I'm done with ever going back to this place. If you love BBQ as much as I do, consider giving Big Ray's BBQ here in Allen a try. They don't skimp on their portions and far better value for your money. I eat at Big Ray's about twice a week and their brisket is fantastic. read more

Tried Soulman's tonight after recently hearing some good things about it, and really glad that we did. My wife had the 1/2 chicken dinner with fried okra, and their mac & cheese. I had a 3 meat plate with ribs, turkey, and sausage. I also got the fried okra, and mac & cheese We were both really pleased with our choices. My wife's 1/2 chicken was a really nice size and very moist. The turkey & sausage I had were also very moist & had great flavor. The ribs were just slightly dry, but still good. They made our fried okra when we ordered it so it was about as hot & fresh as it could be. The mac & cheese was good but nothing memorable. I didn't know what to think when driving up to an empty parking lot & totally empty restaurant, but both of the individuals behind the counter were really nice and put together the order pretty quickly. While I don't think anyone would be talking about Soulman's in the same conversation as some the other more notable BBQ in the area we still really enjoyed our mean & will definitely be back. read more

Food was basic, the best part was the toast. But I was more concerned and couldn't eat my meal after watching what the cook did. She came out to the lobby with gloves on, and went up to a small child touched her hair, wiped something from her face. Went back to the kitchen and continued cooking and handling food with the SAME gloves on! Then I watched her come up from the kitchen and dumped the new food on top of the old food, so who knows how old our food was that we got. To top it off, she used her finger(with gloves on) to clean up a mess and wiped her finger on the trash can to get it off. That was it. I had to leave at that point. No offense to the older crowd but I knew that I was going to be in trouble when all of the customers, there were only 3 were over the age of 65. Put simply Soulman's Bar-B-Que has no soul. The macaroni and cheese was water and tasted like kraft. Certainly not baked. The creamed corn was descent but cold due to sitting on the line. I asked for a fresh batch and the young lady told me that it was but visually you can tel it was not. They opened at 11 I ordered around 12:30. The service was pretty much non existent and the drink machine doesn't work save for lemonade and water. The pulled pork had no flavor or seasoning. Very bland and honestly it looked more like chopped brisket than anything. The ribs lacked much in the way of meat and tasted ok. The sausage is the only thing that saved this from being a 1 Star review. It's the best I've had in DFW if not Texas as a whole. The sauce is perfect and vinegar based as well. Ordered the Out of Sight special. Was a little skeptical of the reviews but thought I'd go ahead and give it a try. The sandwich was a 4.5 out of 5. Super tender finely chopped beef, juicy and plentiful with a sweet and tangy BBQ sauce. The Mac & cheese was a 3 nothing special but not horrible. Creamy but bland. The fries were a 3.5 out of 5. A little underdone, greasy but somehow still had a crisp to them and very salty. It's worth a try but I probably won't be coming back for awhile. I'd try different sides next time. read more

I really don't understand why some people get into restaurant business. This is the second time I've been to this place and I finally decided to do a review. The drive-thru speakers don't work correctly and they can't hear you. I ordered sliced brisket instead of chopped brisket sandwich and they said it will cost a dollar extra when I went to the drive-thru window, the front counter was covered in pollen and it looked like it hasn't been clean for days. When they gave me my order and I drove off I noticed they didn't give me the silverware so I had to go all the way back and knock on the window five times before somebody came to the window and gave me silverware. The macaroni and cheese was runny and it ran into the rest of the food and made a mess. The bun was stale and it seemed like it was couple of days old. I also noticed that they still gave me the chopped brisket instead of a sliced that I paid extra for.
