I was told to try Soulman's BBQ, we went straight after church. No crowd. First time here no real welcome to us newcomers and took a while for someone to ask if we were ready to order. I ordered sausage, mac and cheese, cabbage and banana pudding. The banana pudding was the best. I needed a little more flavor for my sausage, so BBQ sauce to the rescue. Barbecue restaurants are some of the most reliable places to eat if you follow the carnivore diet. You can almost always purchase the meat by the pound. Soulmans barbecue first impressed me at the location in Terrell Texas. I was in the mood for roasted chicken and stopped there to be so impressed with the most tasteful and moist roasted chicken ever. Yes it's more expensive than getting the chicken from a grocery store but it's way better in my opinion. I also love the way they prepare the chopped barbecue by putting it through a meat grinder. We have eaten here before and the food is good. This time we got takeout and we each ordered the 2 meat combo. I had 2 thin slices of brisket in mine. My husband's and son's orders were the same. Five stars is a rare rating from me, but Soulman's Bar-B-Que absolutely earns it. I was recommended this place by a co-worker and I have to say that it was a gem of a discovery. BBQ is probably one of my favorite food groups of all time and I have tried everything from the tried and true Texas style, to Kansas City and the Carolinas. Soulman's was a real treat. I tried a three meat plate with Brisket, Ham and Ribs with their Ranch House Bean, Spicy Potatoes and Potato Salad. Ribs and brisket are often how I judge a BBQ joint and here I was not disappointed. The ribs were fall off the bone tender, moist and had a flavorful bark with just enough of the rub pleasantly seared to the meat. A nice, crisp bark surrounded the sliced brisket with a wonderful deep smoke ring in the tender slices that were not dry at all, like so many places. The ham was even a bit surprising. It was well textured, juicy and held a wonderful smoked flavor. What really impressed me were the sides. The Ranch House Beans had pieces of ham, sausage and brisket in them with chunks of onions and peppers. They were amazing. As was the Spicy Potatoes, a dish of pan-fried potatoes, peppers and onions. They have twelve different sides to choose from and they all looked delicious, except of course for the cabbage, but that is just a personal taste for me. Apparently on Friday nights they have a catfish fry that really packs the place out. Going to have to return and try that out. If you are in the Mansfield area, you have to stop by Soulman's and give them a try. The food was just ok for me. I'm not a fan of the cafeteria vibe. Stand in a line with your tray, pick your meat and sides and at the end of line pay for your tray of food. You then find a seat, and you see ice cream bar separate from where you ordered your original tray of food, but you can't go up and get ice cream from that bar, you have to go to ANOTHER cashier area, place an order for ice cream, be given a paper to take back over to the ice cream bar to exchange for your choice of ice cream. The management and service was excellent for me. Manager Allen was sincerely apologetic about something that was unfortunate for me, but out of his control overall, and he more than made up for it. We stopped here around 2:30 PM to try their BBQ. We got the three meat special for $20 bucks. That was two ribs, 4 oz of brisket, and another 6 oz of sliced sausage. The meat was cold and fatty. AWFUL!!!! The service was pathetic! We contracted with them for a delivery of 200 meals (sack lunch) that would include turkey, ham, pulled pork, and vegetarian. The meal was supposed to arrive by 6:30pm. We got it at 7:45pm. When we called at 6:45pm, they hadn't even started!!!! They said it would take 30 minutes. We prepaid. I guess they got their money and didn't care after that. When they finally arrived 1:15 minutes late, the two employees didn't even say hello. They unloaded the coolers and watched us hand everything out to our kids. They didn't include the vegetarian option that we requested and paid for!!!!! COMPLETE INCOMPETENCE!!!!! We have kids that didn't get to eat because of the inability to provide minimally appropriate service. The food was palatable at best. The sandwiches from a BBQ joint didn't have BBQ sauce!!!!! I can't believe the lack of attention to detail. This is very sad that people who depend on repeat business for their livelihood, are so thoughtless. I guess the upside would be that no BBQ sauce was countered by the BBQ chips in some of the bags. When we asked for a discount, they refused. Texas has the best bbq/brisket by far. We found this place while traveling for work and went back a couple of times while in town.

It was our first-time dining at a Soul Man BBQ location. We had been told that is was great, which should always make one suspicious, like getting directions and they say, "you can't miss it". It is Sunday afternoon and I suggested that neighbor friends meet us there, since my neighbor buddy just loves ribs! My wife and I decided we would get and Brisket sandwich and fries, and my buddy's mouth was watering for Ribs. Guess what! They did not have ribs available, and I was told "we don't have fries today". How can you have things on the menu but not have them available on a Sunday afternoon?! To make things worse, the servings were measured and small, and tasted no better than packaged food. We could have enjoyed a much better meal for a quarter of the price at home, and not have eaten on paper plates using plastic wear. Too many businesses have used Covid to justify cutting back on service and quality. Maybe it just the Mansfield location, but this chain is not managing their business. You pay for even a slice of Texas Toast (as a side), while most restaurants offer fresh rolls, or other enticements, but not here! Plus, hot sauces and such were empty! Soulman's has Soul.. .. My wife and i tried it today and there was no shortage of deliciousness!! I had brisket and ribs. There wasn't anything mesmerizing about the brisket but the ribs were to kill someone for!!! My wife's pulled pork samich was bomb!! The spicy BBQ sauce, I probably could of drank all day by itself. My two sides included fried cabbages and fried potatoes, both were out of this world and should prized for "best sides" on this side of the Texas border!! The staff was very friendly and helpful. The place was kept very clean and organized. To most of us, that should be a given, however, ive been to places where there was food under the tables, on the ordering menus or left over trash from previous patrons. Not here. The staff presented themselves very professional and worked quickly to ensure that all customers were well taken care of. The atmosphere was of course filled with things around Texas, including tribute to our local highschool and college football teams, which I love. I ordered Christmas dinner from Soulman's Bar B Que in Mansfield over 2 weeks in advance. I had a scheduled time to pick up my order at 5pm on Christmas Eve. When I arrived I was told they "overlooked" my slab or ribs on the order and was completely out. I wasn't happy but opted to let them replace it with chicken. Then they told me they gave my potato salad to someone else and was also out of that item. They offered to replace it with another vegetable. I also wasn't happy but agreed with the exchange. When I got home, I realized they left out the rolls and the barbque sauce. I went back to the restaurant and was told they were out of rolls. I had to make another trip to the gro store to pick up the items they left off my order or gave to another customer. The manager didn't offer to refund the $$ for the missing items or the difference between the cost of the chicken versus the ribs. The items were supposed to be cold with instructions to reheat but the items were hot and ready to eat on Friday. After putting them in the fridge overnight and having to reheat them again on Christmas day, the chicken was brutally tough and dry although heated to exactly 165 degrees, the sausage was a grease pit after being reheated. I was very disappointed in my order considering it cost a tremendous amount and the frustration above. I used to order from this location frequently but their quality and service have tanked. *** UPDATE*** I would like to add that Austin called me today and was very apologetic about the issues above. He made it right and did what any good manager would do. I appreciate the follow up and rapid response from him. read more
