Before I even walked in, the place smelled amazing. Inside was clean and dialed. When you're ordering this much food, you half expect some chaos -- but nope. Everything was packed up, organized, and ready to go. Efficient, friendly, no stress. The brisket was fantastic -- tender, flavorful, gone fast. The mac & cheese was a heavy hitter. Definitely one of the first sides to disappear. Hot links had great flavor and the right kick. And the cream corn? That one surprised me. Obviously the food is good, because there was a long line. I ordered the 2 meat plate, chicken and ribs with the pinto beans and cabbage. Chicken: Good flavor, light smoke and tender falling off the bone. The skin was tender as well. - 7.5 Ribs: Seasoned well, tender but not much smoke. - 6.5 Pinto beans: Smoky, with bits of meat, great flavor. - 7.5 Cabbage: No seasoning, plain with a blanched feel. 2nd order comments - Corn: Good, creamy style - 8.0 Pinto Beans: Spicy, good flavor - 10 Ribs: Good, but could have been meatier - 8.0 Great food, great customer service, will go back. In Mesquite for work, and a group of us went to Soulman's for lunch. We all ordered different menu items and everyone was very happy with their food. I had a giant baked potato, loaded. It was perfectly baked, the inside was nice and fluffy while the outside was crisp. I ordered it with cheese, sour cream and butter, and there was a very generous amount of shredded cheese piled on top. I added a few pieces of onions from the topping bar. I also tried the breaded okra, which was excellent. The Texas toast wasn't really toasted, it was more like warm bread. For dessert I had a piece of buttermilk pie, and it was wonderful. Rich and creamy and just a little tangy, and the crust was flakey. I would consider returning just for dessert. Service was fast and friendly, and all the empty tables were clean, the employees were hurrying to keep the dining area clean and tables available. SO I hear about the chuck wagon special for 1974!!! Sounded interesting so we went to Soulman's in Mesquite. They were very busy and the place was crowded. Not been to Mesquite in a long time but we ordered from the line Brisket, sausage, to large sides , Potatoe Salad and Okra!! ( sorry forgot my phone) The people it's the servicing line were very polite and helpful. Place was clean and I love the bell ringing!!! I was very surprised with the meal. Everything was point on! Visited Soulman's Barbecue on 10/4/20. Being my first time, I was glad I had the opportunity to browse their menu. It seemed vast but standard like two-meat plate, sandwich plates, etc. They had like eight meat choices: beef, turkey, chicken (fried), sausage, pulled pork, ham, hot links and ribs. I stuck with my typical choices and ordered two fried apple pies, a rack of ribs, a pound of brisket, a pound of turkey, a side of cole slaw and a side of fried okra. I got turkey and fried okra because the family likes those so I thought it was worth a try. So, here's the lowdown: -- Fried apple pies were pretty damn good! Some of the best I've had. I would go back and get more. -- Cole slaw is exactly the kind that I prefer. It's not that trying-to-be-fancy kind but almost exactly like KFC kind. -- Fried okra was very crispy and not too bad. I'm not a huge okra fan in general but the family liked it. -- Sliced brisket, ribs and turkey can be lumped in together for my commentary. They weren't bad but I cannot say, "Damn, you gotta try them." They were moist and tender but they just didn't have ANY flavor to them. I don't know how they cook their meats but it makes me think a typical household oven was involved. Again, moist and edible but not flavorful. FINAL VERDICT: It's a pass for me. It's just not my preference. There are plenty of other places around town that are just as good or better for a similar price. Although, I would go back to get more fried apple pies! read more

The hotlinks and potato salad were good and that's it the food from here left a lot to be desired. When I visited here I got the brisket some macaroni some potato salad hotlinks and a slice of bread. The macaroni was very bland and not good very generic tasting the potato salad was actually pretty flavorful and the hot links were delicious. Those two were the only good things on the plate. The brisket was extremely dry and had no seasoning whatsoever it was not at all well cooked. Brisket should basically melt in your mouth. Portions were pretty big but honestly I didn't really enjoy this place I don't feel like they take their time and cook their food correctly with love. Yes again the portions were a large size but honestly you will pay like 20 bucks to get a nice size portion and it isn't really worth it if the food isn't really that good I don't think I will be returning to this location and I wouldn't recommend it to any of my friends. You can add bananas pepper , onions , pickled jalapeño , fresh salsa etc however you like it. The meat on the ribs was so tender, falling off the bone. The hot links was not that hot and was equally good. The coleslaw so fresh and soooo good. It was crunch and not soggy and not too salty and done just perfectly. The piece of pecan pie was very good. He wanted the family special. We got the chuck wagon. Enough to feed us and take some with us. We chose the brisket. You get 1lb of brisket (which is a lot) and 2 sides. I love smoked brisket. This brisket had no flavor. I don't like my brisket with bbq sauce. I believe flavor from the smoke is all that is needed. There was no smoke flavor. None. It tasted more like it had been boiled. The sides were good and servings were huge. Servers were polite even with a few demanding customers in front of us. They moved the line fast and efficiently. I had such high hopes for this restaurant especially with a name like Soulman's Bar-B-Que and all of my dreams were dashed when I saw the Hillshire Farm sausage being passed off as smoked BBQ. The ham resembled the smoked one from Walmart and it continued to get worse. My mini ordered the macaroni and cheese and as I scooped it into her side dish cup the watery consistency told me it would lack the flavor and creaminess that we all desired. My aunt ordered the Double Barrel Baked stuffed potato and once again it lacked appeal and flavor minus the BBQ sauce. I hope BBQ gets better in Texas as of right now my hopes are dashed. read more

First and last visit. The meats were great, but the Sides not so much. The fried cabbage was more like boiled cabbage, lots of liquid in the to go container and weirdly had tomatoes in it. Pinto beans were just ok. The Mac n cheese was a huge disappointment, very watery and flavorless. BBQ sauce was ok. Asked for onion and pickles on the side, didn't get any, either because they missed the note asking for it or because they didn't have any. What bbq place doesn't serve pickles and onions with your food? Not one that I've ever been to anyways. Ordered banana pudding too, but haven't tried it yet, almost afraid too at this point.
