I wavered on 4 or 5 stars, but there are two things in their favor. #1: There aren't too many places like this left. Love them while they're here. #2: I'll never forget the time there was an alarm at the nearby bank (this was at the old location on Sepulveda) and a shotgun-toting policeman told us to stay put. It doesn't really say anything about the store, but if it's on the line, I allow this random memory to push things up to 5 stars. Nothing may live up to my memory of Penny Lane in Westwood back when I was a Bruin cough-cough years ago, but this has a lot of the same appeal. The only thing I'll say against them is that when I went fully digital and dumped my physical CDs on them, their offer was pitifully low... but still probably better than wasting my time on ebay or... giving them to Goodwill. read more

Started shopping Soundsations when they were located on Sepulveda and I've watched the crew grow old together (like me). Always seem to find a hidden treasure or two and the prices are very reasonable. I only get to the store once or twice a year (when picking somebody up at the airport) and have always been treated politely and professionally. They are all music nuts like me so what's not to like? Found a Buddy Holly box set of super-rare recordings that is one of my most prized possessions. read more

I love this place. When I first got my record player a little over a year ago, I went to several different record shops in the space of 2 weeks trying to find a place to 'call home', and this one emerged victorious without a contest. Lots of rock, of all varieties. I was surprised to see such a range of really old and really new music. Great prices on their used stuff, which is updated pretty frequently. I'm a huge Muse fan, and I got most of their albums here for $10 each by coming back and being patient over the course of just a few months. Always easy parking nearby. read more

What can I say. A magical walk into a world of visceral experience as opposed to the instant gratification of digital streaming. Don't get me wrong smart phones and technology are convienent. Great store, nice selection of LPs and CDs with fair pricing. One of the better record stores in Los Angeles. The staff has always treated me respect and I always stop in when near Westchester. Was here today and saw the staff yelling at a woman outside in an extremely rude and aggressive way. They were swearing at her to pick up her dogs poop and she had said she didn't have a bag and was going to get one. The dog lady did come back and picked up the poop. When she came into the store to tell them that she picked it up they said "You dog people never pick up your dog s***!" As a dog owner, I found this extremely upsetting and rude and uncomfortable. I've been shopping at Soundsations since the days they were on Sepulveda, in front of Pizza Napoli. 20+ years ago. They were great back then and are great now. Scored some great lp's in there yesterday (record store day). The Guess Who (Wheatfield Soul), First 2 Ozark Mtn Daredevils albums, Steve Young lp, early Fleetwood Mac, and a few others. Walked away with 7 records, spent under $15. Great service too! read more

Happened to find the reviews of Soundsations here and decided on my next venture to LA I would check it out. I ended up going everyday of my trip. There was either something I decided I should have bought or some new things came in. The prices were incredible. And as a collector they were unbeatable. Just don't leave something behind you might want, because it probably won't be there long. Been forever since I've gone to a place that didn't try to gouge you on the rare stuff. Staff is great. Friendly guys who can talk sports or music. Unlike just about every record store in history they had NO problem with me going through the stuff that wasn't priced yet. Stuff I was interested in they happily gave me a great price for. The discount racks were a treasure trove of good stuff. Even got a signed copy of a recent cd for two bucks. It also wasn't the same old that ends up in the dump bins. This is actually good stuff. Prepare to go digging through the various racks. Can't ask for anything better in a record shop. Looking forward to getting back there next time I'm in LA. Sorry other music haunts - Soundsations is my new love. read more

I stopped by in hopes of finding some great vinyl. - 3 1/2 stars for me. They do have a good vinyl selection of RnB, jazz, etc but not much reggae (that's what I went looking for). They have some shirts for sale hanging from the ceiling. They look cool with a vinyl print but they also put the phone number and address of the place. $15 bucks on up to wear and advertise for them seems a bit much. I would have had a hanger proudly supporting one of these in my closet if the advertising was toned down or at least minimize the business lettering. ( i wish now that i had taken and posted a picture of the shirt) well I commend you for reading this far along (I would have stopped already). so since you won't stop reading, I will end it here. read more

My favorite music place! Pete is the nicest & coolest, he is the shorter older guy with dark hair. The other guys are really cool guys too, the place has lots of cd, nice selection of vinyl & other good music related stuff you find at other music stores - different collectibles & such at each one basically. But they do good deals on store credit & their prices are nearly always very well, nearly always cheaper than anywhere else, online included, when you're buying used. Buying new items there however can vary, but the used items are in excellent condition & there is a good chance whatever you are looking for is also there with a used sticker. The store stock varies almost daily based on what people trade/sell & what the guys may order in to stock the store so if you couldn't find what you were looking for on 1 occasion it's great to go back within a week or less & check back! Another cool bonus is that pete or lee will order something for you if they can & have it delivered if you can't find it in the store! read more

These guys are pioneers, been around since, I think the 80's. They have survived all technology advancements in digital music considering they specialized in vinyl, CDs and DVDs! They have an awesome selection CDs and Vinyl. They buy and sell new and used copies of their selections. Great finds in all those stacks they offer, even rarities. I used to go to their original location on Sepulveda near La Tijera (now Brooklyn Bagels), they've only moved a small footprint around the corner from their original spot. So I was getting my nails done a week ago and in the nail salon they were playing the whole Toni Braxton "Snowflakes" cd. I immediately fell in love. It's not your regular style X-Mas music. It's so good you will want to listen to it even when it is not a festive season. With that being said my nail lady said go to Soundsations they have it for $6.99. I couldn't believe it but then again I never bought a Chrismas cd before so I figured those types of cd's are cheap. Needles to say I never even heard of Soundsations before and before I actually came here I went to "Wherehouse Music" (which did not have the cd at all) & "Best Buy" (who had the nerve to sell it for $20). So I googled Soundsations called them up & they also did not have it but were able to order it for me for the very low price of $6.99. There cd's are pretty much the same price as other music stores its just better because they sell vinyls, dvd's, cassettes (yes they still sell cassettes) they might even have some 8 tracks ;-) while I was there I went ahead and copped Miguel "Kaleidoscope Dream" & Robert Glasper Experiment "Black Radio". P.S. I know you guys are wondering why I didn't just come here first after the lady told me where to go but I had left for Chicago the next day and when I got back I figured I would just go some where close to mi casa but uuuummm as you can see that didn't work out ;-D read more

I had been looking forward to visiting this record store since I moved to Los Angeles a few years ago and finally got the opportunity today. Unfortunately, it was my first and last visit to Soundsations. When I was checking out the cashier made several disgusting comments about my outfit. I was wearing a dress with a zipper down the front. He opened with "Hey, can you do me a favor really quickly and just unzip that?" and continued with "I've just always been fascinated with zippers, that's what they're​ for, you know, to be unzipped!" "I could just reach over and unzip it right here!" he said as he reached across the counter at me. "If I was in 3rd grade I would totally just zzzzzzziiiiippp!" I was horrified, scared, and disgusted​. While this was going on, I kept shooting looks at the other employees (there were between 3 and 4 other people also behind the counter with this guy) who all looked down at the floor, and avoided my eye contact. I'm not sure if this moron is actually dense enough to believe that he was making a funny joke (a joke about forcibly undressing a woman you've never met?), or if he is just a sexist piece of shit, but THIS WAS SEXUAL HARASSMENT​ and should not be tolerated. read more

I enjoy shopping here and feel the owners are stand up guys with clear accurate communication and care for their customers. Knowledgable and service oriented. Has become my fav stop to peruse and purchase vinyl. Big bonus with their VPI Record cleaning device which helps keep older selections more usable and clear sounding. Decent deal at $1 per side. Overall prices for new or used vinyls about the best in all Los Angeles and cool stop to find used challenging to find issues. None of the hipster snobbery that you'd get over at Amoeba, and the prices are much better. Great record store. Half of the store is used stuff and it's all reasonably priced. I would say the store is particularly geared towards people who are into indie, punk, and their related genres, although they also have a sizeable hip hop section. Very small selection of vinyl, this place is all about CDs, although they do have a collection of rare vinyl on the wall behind the register. The best record store ever!! I would drive by this place all the time but today I stopped in looking for a particular album on vinyl and the staff was so friendly and helpful.
