I get all the jeans and pants altered from Mario from past 3 years. But I'm gonna stop coming here from today because of the racist comments he made. I mentioned that the jeans he worked on are not straight and stitches are off. For which he responded there are people who spend $1000 on pants and $7000 on suits who get the alterations here and I'm the picky customer. Please remember that I'm his customer from past three years. When I stated the fact that jeans are not expensive and on top that I'm spending money for alterations, he went off on me and said for people in India $100 might be expensive and it's cheap here. He did agree to fix it later but bringing the country into the mix instead of agreeing to fix the pant is not at all acceptable. I wish I could've recorded a video of the whole conversation. DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU ARE AFRICAN AMERICAN. I dropped off pants for hemming. Upon pickup, I went to pull out my debit card to pay and he snapped ' I only take cash.' I told him I didn't have cash on me and asked him why he didn't advise he was cash only when I dropped off my pants. He replied 'you supposed to have cash on you.' Umm no, who carries cash?? I told him I would be happy to go to the bank to get the $20 and come back. He screamed, 'You leave pants here and go because I don't trust you people' Wow!! You don't even know me. Finding a good tailor is hard. Finding a good tailor that won't nickle and dime you is harder. My search for a great and reliable tailor has taken me to West LA, Melrose, Torrance, and now to Redondo Beach. Since I am re-building my wardrobe, I needed to find a great tailor. One of my family members mentioned Mario and his shop in Redondo Beach. I decided to give it a try. I brought two slacks to get tailored. Mario did the measurements, and told me to come back two days later. I did so, and he had my slacks tailored well and ready to go. He gave me a good rate for each pair of pants as well. The only downside is that it is cash-only, and I use credit card for just about everything. But given the promptness, quality, and reliability and Mario provides, I can definitely overlook this. I'm thankful to have found this gem of a tailor. And so close to me, located in my hometown! Five stars all the way! read more

Maybe Mr. Gomez was having a bad day, but I'm not inclined to ever come back here again. I brought in a silk Vince dress for a simple alteration. I needed it by a certain date and asked him if he could do it in one week. He said yes. I came to pick it up today and the seam was visibly crooked. When I came out of the fitting room and showed him, he seemed annoyed. So without saying anything, he pinned it and asked if it was better. I said yes. And he said, when do you want to pick it up? Because I needed it by Monday, I asked if he could do it now. He muttered something under his breath that sounded like swearing (giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming he wasn't) and acted completely exasperated. Mind you, I was being courteous. I said, "well, it wasn't done right and I need it by Monday." More swearing under his breath (this time, distinguishable). Seriously? What happened to customer service and making something right? I would bring him more business if he'd been courteous and at least apologized once, but it seems that's too much to ask. Further, if you're in business, what makes it okay to show visible and audible annoyance (clearly meant for the the customer) after you mishandle a project or order and the customer asks you to make it right? In the end, he fixed it (hence 2 stars and not one), however he handed the dress to me in a wad. No hanger or any way to protect the dress -- which was not cheap. Will definitely take my business elsewhere. read more

The owner (Mario) does good work. He really helped me out and cleaned up the mess that was caused by Coco's Alterations NOT doing two simple hems in 5 days. Mario turned the job around in less than 24 hours and his price was about the same. Don Mario is amazing, I've had him alter pants, shorts and jeans. He listens to what I want and how I want everything to fit and he gets to work. I usually ask for him to shorten the length and taper the sides. He usually gets it right the first time, but if theres something I want changed he does it no questions asked. A friend recommended him to me, and I can't praise his work enough. He has great prices and tries his best to get them to you when you need them, if you procrastinated. read more

Horrible experience! My boyfriend & I took pants and tops in to South Bay Tailors and they butchered pretty much everything they could! And then took all our money for it... I wanted my bootcut jeans to be slimmed in a bit to more of a slight flare or straight leg. I saw how he pinned them and they looked good. Well when I got them back, they were extremely tapered (umm never a good look!) and not only that, they were done so in such an awkward way, like a severe pinch in at the knees. Hated it and will have to turn them into capris or shorts. Then there was a cardigan I had with 1 missing button. Brought the button and asked that they sew it back on and oh, while they were at it, did they mind just tightening up the other buttons on it? Ya know, an extra 30 seconds and foot of thread. He did so and tried to charge me $15 for it. Do not go here unless you are a fan of ruining your clothes. Really. read more

i took my Jiu-Jitsu Gi here to get my patches put on. They did a crap job and the patches were put on crooked, plus he had over a week to do it.. When i brought it over to the tailor to fix the crooked patch the girl at the register took $40 from my wallet i stupidly left on the counter.. the tailor then fixed the patch but didn't secure it very well.. within a month i had to have it redone. I'm 6 feet tall, slim and have to wear size large for long sleeve shirts because my arms are too long for mediums. This causes a problem for me sometimes because I get shirts that I like but they aren't cut slim enough. I needed a shirt slimmed down so I started calling around and everyone wanted to charge $25-$30 for this. The shirt itself barely cost that much. South Bay Tailors only charged me $15 and the shirt looks great now -- and he did it in the same day. I don't know if I would take an expensive suit there, but he has my business for shirts. read more

Mario is a very skilled tailor. Been using him for years and just now jumped on yelp to see how highly someone like him was rated. Looks like some early negative ones didn't help very much. I will agree that he may not be social and they don't even accept cards or give a receipt but I just go in looking to have my clothes fit perfectly and I've never had problems. The last time I used him was to get a dress shirt fitted for a group performance. The shirts were made to be sized correctly at the neck and then oversized along the arms and body. They were expected to be tailored to fit individually. With 8 other guys I was the only one who actually had the shirt properly fit me. I can't remember which was the problem, the arms or the body, but when the other guys asked their tailor to have the dress shirt fit the tailors said it was not possible to have body (I can't remember if it was the body or the arms but I feel like it was the body) fitted very well (the extra material really was excessive). So they had poofy shirts that they made do with, with the help of some tucking and folding and pinning. By the next performance they all had Mario fit their shirts and all was well. I'll be taking more stuff to get fitted this week. Jeans, which I've never had him do before. Always shirts or pants. We'll see how it goes. read more

My wife and I have been customers of South Bay Tailors for more than ten years. We were always pleased with Jose, the original owner, and now with his successor, Mario, the present owner. They both were, and are, kind, polite, gentlemen and Master Tailors. For my wife they have altered clothing by Dior, Armani, Chanel, etc. I've had suits, jackets, and trousers altered.. again by top makers. We've never had a bad experience. Mario's seams were often neater and better than the originals. When we came back to pickup our clothes, if we wanted a bit of tweaking or minor changes, Mario always quickly made the changes to please us. South Bay Tailors is not the cheapest place in the South Bay, but believe me, you get what you pay for !! You can leave you clothes with the girl at the mall, or at the dry cleaners if you're shopping for lowest price.. good luck with that. I don't know what to make of the negative review posted by Jessica... wonder if she was in the same place I know and love ???? As to Jefferson's review ... There is no "girl at the register" in South Bay Tailors so that makes me suspicious. I've seen Taekwando patches there, but never Jui Jitsu patches. I am all scared now because I took my suit there. I wanted to go the the highly recommend tailor's across the street but they were closed. I don't have mobile internet so I went here before I saw the review. So far I rate this as 3 stars and will update the rating after I see the results. I've gained weight since the last time I wore a suit :( so I took it here to have the jacket and slacks taken out a little. He did have me try on the jacket and marked how he was going to expand it, but the slacks he just eyed! I guess the slacks get covered up by the jacket, but we'll see when I go to pick it up. I am really scared because I need this suit for a job interview next Friday! I will be picking it up on Thursday and hopefully I will remember to update this review. If not, you know nothing really eventful happened so the review would stay at 3 stars. I'm sure if it horrible I will update!!! and same for if it turns out to be a great experience. I picked up my suit last week and was glad that it fit and I was able to wear it to my job interview. As for how good it looked, I'll leave it to if I get the job or not hehe :). Anyhow they open early 8am so when I went in the pick up was fast. I should tell you though, they don't give you a claim tag or anything, it's just based on name, so someone else could have taken my suit for the fee paid for tailoring. :( Another thing is they only take cash or check. It cost me $50 for them to let out the pants and jacket, I think it's a little expensive, but not really sure since this is the first time I've had this type of tailoring done. I still wish CoCo's across the street was open when I first had to get it tailored, because I had high anxiety waiting to get my suit. Oh one other note, they did not give a receipt either. Because of the anxiety, lack of claim tag, lack of receipt, and what I think was a high price I dropped it down to 2 stars. Now I know this isn't right, but if I get the job, I will put it back to 3 stars cuz obviously they made me look good so it was a good job tailoring. Right now I really can't tell. Wow, the one face to face interview I have with the newly tailored suit landed me the job! :) 1 for 1! So as promised, I'm bumping it up a star to 3 stars. I'm not that picky on clothing so I probably wouldn't recommend it for women's clothing per Jessica's review, but I think with men's clothing he does a decent job.
