The Garage: Clean for a mechanics shop. Had some top of the line tools (Snap-on, etc). Well organized. Service: William was very nice, and the prices were fair. He didn't try to push unnecessary maintenance. The shop time was reasonably priced and fairly calculated. Took about 24 hours to complete the work. My only detractor was the cost for alignment; they don't have the equipment for doing alignments, so they need to outsource (price was $140). After I fell victim to the curse that eventually afflicts all of us who street park in Boston (a broken mirror), I headed to Will. I had a quote from an autobody shop in Rhode Island already. Will was able to match their price despite the fact that they had not factored in more expensive elements of my mirror (heated, lights, etc.). In the interim, he also popped the mirror back into place so that I wouldn't have to keep driving with rubber bands on it (something the other auto body shop didn't recognize as an option)! The project was handled in less than a week, and he also very kindly adjusted my tire pressure and swapped out a windshield wiper that was coming apart. Very kind, honest team who took the time to really talk to me about my car and understand my needs. The location is also perfect if you live in Boston proper. Will at SB Auto Tech is awesome! I run a business in Southie, and my vehicle's brakes sort of died toward the end of my work day on Thursday. I called over to SB Auto Tech around 7pm expecting to leave a message ,and they were there, and told me to bring it over! Right then! The next day, Will replaced a brake line that had broken and explained how and why I was having trouble. He also told me why my check engine light was on (giving me the code as well, and explained what I'll need to have done (eventually). He also replaced a few out bulbs, to my surprise, free of charge. A 20-something girl walks into a mechanic shop....and this story always seems to end badly. At least, it did for me - until I met Will and his team. Let me start by saying I drive a 2002 Lexus. Our car is old, but we love it, so we often find ourselves calling Will with a variety of dilemmas. Over the past year or so, Will and his crew have: repaired a transmission fluid leak, repaired our exhaust system twice, done a substantial amount of complicated preventative maintenance, replaced all four tires, replaced break pads, replaced a variety sensors, and repaired an emissions issue. Yes, we are slowly building a new car. With each visit, Will and his team members have been kind, professional, fair, honest, and just plain pleasant to talk to. It is clear how diligently these guys work to get repairs done as quickly as possible, without sacrificing quality. They go above and beyond every single time. Prices are always reasonable and always well explained. Will outlines necessary repairs in a way that is easy to understand, and answers our (many) questions with a smile. As two type A people, who know essentially nothing about cars, Will's patience with myself and my husband never ceases to amaze me. These guys are the absolute best, there is no one I could trust more. My only hope is that we never leave Southie, so I never have to even think about bringing my car elsewhere. read more

Will at South Boston Auto Tech is the real deal guys!!!! I came to notice this shop when I was looking online for a mechanic to fix this horrible notice that was coming from hood near the engine. I had a horrible experience with a mechanic shop near the Davis Square area and just need to find a mechanic I could trust again. Background: I bought a 2007 Ford Focus from a dealer in January and the min. I bought the car there was a loud noise, where the car was humming and vibrating unnaturally every time I started the engine. The guys at Monroe Muffler shop told me that it was the exhaust system, which indeed had a large gaping whole. I took the car to a muffler specialist in Leominster and he replaced the exhaust system for me.. The noise did get quieter but it still was pretty loud, especially near the passenger side. When I asked the muffler specialist if that noise could be fixed. He said that it's just a design defect with the Fords. However, I was determined to get to the bottom of it. I took it to another shop and they told me that the engine was fine and there wasn't anything they could do. So, I was in great need to find somebody that would be able to diagnose the problem. Yelp brought me to South Boston Auto Tech. I saw the glowing 5 star reviews and thought this guy, Will, must know what he's doing because everybody loves him. The reviews don't lie. I called Will for an appointment and was scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. I briefly described what I was hearing from the car. I also had done some research on Youtube and told him that I thought maybe one of the cylinders might be affected since that's the sound that came out of a car, similar to what I was hearing in my car, on Youtube. Will took the car and hit the nail on the head. He told me that the mounts on my Engine were old and literally the engine was hanging and bouncing around every time I drove it. He also said that was probably what affected my exhaust system. Every thing he said was true.. I verified it online and this is exactly what was going on. Will is a professional, no BS kind of guy, He doesn't gauge you on what he charges you for his labor. He really knows what he is talking about. I went to four different mechanics before coming to Will and none of them could tell me what was going on with the engine.. However, Will was on the money the first time he took the car in. I have to say the car drives soooo smoothly now, no loud engine bumping sound. It is like a completely different car. I have Will the thanks for that. Will is an honest mechanic and just an all around good guy. I brought my car there a couple of times to get some minor things checked out. He charges you a normal hourly wage for his time but will not recommend anything that does not need to be done and he always calls you to let you know what's up before doing anything. I had a snapped exhaust pipe underneath my car and instead of trying to sell me on a much bigger job, he welded it back together for me and had it back to me in about 2 hours. Keep in mind this was a last minute drop in visit (called that day). That being said this is a very small shop with limited room to store their cars (street parking), so make sure you call ahead and make an appointment to make yours and Will's (master mechanic) life easier. read more

These people are awesome. I was VERY worried because you've heard the horror stories that come with auto mechanics but this shop was amazing. Will, the owner and his associates (whose names regrettably escape me, sorry) were honest, professional, and did everything they could to get me the best deal in getting my car fixed from a computer/electrical problem. And they did all that with a friendly disposition. They even have an adorable Doberman mascot (I love dogs). The crew partnered with a rental company to get me loaner at a fair price while they worked on my car. They then shopped around different companies in weighing their options to get my car computer replaced at the LOWEST price and even made sure The 3rd party put a lifetime warranty on my new computer. I would WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend this shop. They really do their best to make sure their customers leave happy and you leave with a sense of trust that you can't find anywhere else. Panicking, i called the first mechanic i could find that is still open on yelp. My visit to this place was last Friday. I recently bought a used Toyota Prius. What an amazing car. I'm new to the world of hybrids, and became aware that my regular mechanic - an honest, competent, kind gentleman who has provided excellent service for my previous three cars - was just not familiar with this new type of vehicle. My sweetheart - sensing my internal agony over being "disloyal", yet knowing that I really needed a new mechanic - did some online research into "Hybrid Mechanics" and found multiple 5-star reviews for Will Smith at South Boston Auto Tech. I took my Prius in for a brake job (pads were starting to squeal), shocks check (the Prius rides significantly more stiffly than my previous Honda EX), TPMS gauge (Prius owners will know how annoying this little indicator light can be), oil change, and non-working console charger. At first, Google Maps could not find the street that South Boston Auto Tech is on. I called to ask for cross streets. "Silas" gave me the coordinates. Turns out the full name of the street is "General Devine Way", not "Devine Way". I input this info into Google Maps and was taken to a tiny street on a residential block across from a small park. South Boston Auto Tech is small and unobtrusive. I actually passed right by it at first. I went around the block again and noticed the storefront. The place is not what I was expecting. It's compact, to say the least and squeezed between houses. There appeared to be room for only two or three cars inside. I was greeted by "Silas", a very friendly mechanic with a chill attitude, and "Diesel", a not-unfriendly Doberman securely contained inside a pet carrier. Silas told me that Will would be along soon. Within a few minutes, Will Smith appeared: Tall, thin, firm handshake, cool tattoos, and a confidence-inspiring smile. He took my cars' "medical history" and gave me a general estimate of how much the work might cost. He said he'd call soon to let me know what he'd found out. Will rang me up within a half hour, and confirmed that I needed a brake job - rear only; that there was nothing wrong with the shocks; that the Tire Pressure Management System gauge would need to be replaced, but that it wasn't an emergency and that my tire pressures were fine; that my car was subject to a recall having to do with airbags, and that I should take it to a dealer to have that work done for free (!); that Toyota guidelines indicated I needed some additional service that he could perform that day - I elected to change the cabin air filter (my Sweetheart has dust allergies) but some additional maintenance really wasn't an emergency and I could have it done on my next visit (!) and that it could use an alignment "when I could get around to it" (!). He gave me a time when the car would be done and an estimate. To make a long story short, my car was ready exactly on time, his bill came in for less than the estimate (!), and Will printed out the recall information for me without being asked. Now the car drives great. Overall, this first visit to South Boston Auto Tech was exceptional. I do not hesitate to recommend them. I'll be going back to do regular service. By the way, "Diesel" the Doberman was in a pet carrier because Will has enrolled him in obedience school, where he is said to be doing very well. Cheers! read more

To make a long story short, I came to this place because of the good yelp reviews. Based on most of the reviews, it is true that Will is a nice guy but I ended up paying over $500 to get my car "repaired." I took it to another mechanic after my situation got worse and he fixed it for $47. Details: Took my car there to get an inspection sticker and get my ABS checked out. I was moving out of the city and need my car to commute on a daily basis. They changed my back rotors and break pads and told me it was the sensor that was causing the light on my dash to go on. After it had been there for a week, I called and was rudely told it had been ready for days (not by Will), even though no one notified me. "Yeah it's been ready for like a week." After using it to commute for about a week, the situation got worse and my breaks started seizing up. I took it to another mechanic closer to where I live now and it turned out a pump in a ABS system had blown. It would have cost thousands to fix so he just shut it off by taking out the fuses and shutting the system off, as a lot of older cars don't even have an Antilock Breaking System. He said he couldn't believe I was driving this car with this situation and he was able to fix the problem for a 1/2 hours worth of work ($47), it took them about 3 hours to "fix" my car. I'd have to imagine they didn't even get in there and check the ABS, as the pump was broken and they had no idea. They just replaced unnecessary costly parts and didn't fix the problem. I couldn't take the car back because I wasn't willing to drive 45 minutes with shotty breaks, plus they botched it so bad the first time I glad I didn't take it back. read more

I am always skeptical about mechanics from past experiences with bad ones. I have been working on my own cars for years (brakes, plugs, filters, tune ups etc) so I have somewhat a general knowledge about cars. Now that I live in Southie and I have no driveway I needed a good mechanic as I have 2 aging cars (1 American and 1 German). Will was able to work on both cars no issues and his pricing has ALWAYS been fair. He has earned my business as long as I live in the area. My car was making an awful screeching noise from the back tires and it sounded like something was caught in my wheel well. After prior experiences getting scammed by Emerson and A-Z Auto Center in Brighton, I took a gamble here and had AAA bring my car by. Will took a look at it and quoted me a reasonable price before he started work (I verified with my home mechanic who said it sounded fair for a city mechanic) and completed it in a day. He even stayed late for me to run by with payment. My car is old and I'm just trying to keep it running, not give it a makeover, so he fixed what I needed and gave me a heads up about what I should look into fixing down the road. They always do good work, I've never had to bring anything back for a second look, and they never put the screws to you on price.
