Came here with my other veg*n coworker for lunch, and we both like it a lot! I got the crispy masala dosa, and it was beautifully crispy as advertised and I liked most of the sauces it came with. The potato in the middle was nicely spiced. My coworker hadn't seen dosa before and thought it was the biggest burrito ever until I showed him that most of the inside is hollow, LOL. He got the thali plate, which apparently comes with free refills, which is an amazing bargain! I might get it next time we go, but I do love dosa... We both liked our food, and we also split the fried cauliflower appetizer which was also delicious! I was skeptical when I saw it come out with ketchup, but let me tell you, it works really well with the spices on the cauliflower. Mango lassi is exactly what you expect from any Indian place. Even though the little plaza thing this is in looks a little on the run down side (gives hole-in-the-wall vibes), the interior is clean, looks relatively new, and tastefully decorated, which was a pleasant surprise. The servers were really nice and helped my coworker out as he hadn't had a thali plate before but saw it on another table and wanted to try it. It wasn't too crowded at lunch, but also wasn't that empty, and I think we were the only two non-Indians there, which is usually a good sign, heh. We're already talking about when we want to go back here, and might bring one of our other coworkers who is more open to eating vegetarian stuff, as well, so I know I'll be back here! Best to enter the parking going southeast on El Camino Real. The parking area is on right and is small but there are specifically marked spaces for SouthIndies restaurant. My South Indian friends took me here so I knew it would be good. Very casual atmosphere just cafe like. We ordered various parathas and curries to share. I ordered a gobi paratha which was great. Pieces of gobi were small but you could still tell the gobi. Bread was well grilled and tasty. We had some eggplant curry and a kofta. The kofta was slightly tough but sauce was good. We were skeptical coming in because a restaurant that claims to serve authentic food from all the South Indian states along with Punjabi items can rarely do it all well. However, South Indies seems to be an exception and we really hope they keep up the great work. We got a moong dal dosa (peserattu) with paneer and a thatte idli. Both dishes were excellent. I was pleasantly surprised by how crisp the peserattu was. The staff was also really friendly and had great recommendations for us, they checked in to see how things were going multiple times, and they took the time to explain some of the niche items on the menu that we didn't know in more detail. The round metal platter centered around white rice and came with dal, rasam, okra in tomato curry, mushrooms with spinach, lemon rice, a salad of cucumbers/carrots/moong dal, yogurt, spiced potatoes with peas, payasam (sweet with vermicelli), vada (fritter), a sweet, fryums, a slice of watermelon, two pickles, rotis (whole wheat flatbread), and spiced buttermilk. There were so many delicious flavors and textures featured on the thali, but my favorites were the okra and the mushroom/spinach curries, eaten along with the fresh, chewy rotis. In addition to the thali, I also tried the Rava Idli, two steamed cakes made of semolina mixed with herbs and lentils, but the best part was the chutneys that came on the side, including a green coconut herb chutney, a sweet and tangy tomato chutney, and an earthy peanut chutney! Each of these was fresh and distinct in flavor, making for a delicious array of condiments. I ordered takeout for lunch and would highly recommend this place. It was easy to order online and pickup took only about 5 minutes. I got the dosa with paneer. They served a generous portion of paneer that was diced small with seasonings and rolled into a very tasty dosa. The chutneys were flavorful, I got 3 one seemed coconut based, another tasted like peanut and the last one was a spicy red one. Sorry I don't know the names. You also get a container of I think sambar, very tasty and perfect for the cold weather. It was only $14 for lunch so I will be back to try more dishes. I've been here twice now. I think the food itself tastes decently well, but the management needs a big uplift. I stopped by on a Saturday morning at 10 am, and it probably had 10 people in a capacity of 50+. I got a table for 5 and ordered items through the QR code on their tables. The basic tiffin items like idli and medu vadai took 30-40 mins which can tell you how slow the process was. The staff came several times to confirm the order because, as they claim, sometimes they have a glitch in the system and they don't receive order. One of my friend got her dosa while everyone else waited. After she finished her dosa, she ordered another dosa which got delivered first while the others were still waiting for their original order. It just seemed very unorganized in terms of taking order and fulfilling them. Some tables who came after us got their food even before us getting medu vadai. I really wonder if that's the service during a 10-15 people sitting how might it be in a busy service? I might not go to this place again. read more

It has been a long time since I was solo exploring in (South) India (January-March 2019), so the name--SOUTHINDIES VEG/VEGAN/JAIN RESTAURANT--alone would pull me in. This time, my much better half decided to have a taste from the area that I had contacted her from back then. We entered and were most welcomed, occupying a table close to the front door where I could keep an eye on our bicycles. After studying the menu, the daily special (Virundha Sappadu & crispy cauliflower) seemed the obvious choices, all washed down with clean freshwarwel water. The immaculate interior had a scent reminiscent of that glorious country and my mouth was watering while my ears picked up faint sounds of (South) Indian music. Soon after placing our order, the crispy cauliflower appeared--a most delicious appetizer. It was quickly followed by a large platter full of various dishes, with a plate of white rice in the center. Using two gleaming aluminum plates, we split the delectable food, always beginning with a small heaping of the rice. What a delightful meal! Personally, it was a return for me to South India, where I thoroughly enjoyed similar immense palm-leaf meals, always conscientious about using only my right-hand for serving myself, though just about any onlooker could easily identify me as a non-resident! This has become one of my favorite south Indian restaurants in the Bay Area. Food tastes really good and the service is also great. It has a lot of Jain options. They have 3 Jain chutney options. And i love their tomato chutney the most. Also their chutneys are not very spicy so it's good for people like me. They also have Jain sambhar option. I had the phudina benne masala dosa, where they made masala from plantains. No other restaurant in the Bay Area has a Jain masala dosa option. And it tasted really good and was quite filling. I even tried their ragi set dosa and I loved it. They also have jain mini thali options and I tried it once and really loved itZ My friends ordered non-Jain benne masala dosa, thatte idli, paneer bhurji dosa, rava dosa, and non-jain thali. Hi, My husband and I tried this new vegetarian restaurant for the first time and were truly impressed! The place is beautifully designed -- modern, clean, and very welcoming. We ordered masala dosa, lemon rice, paneer, and coffee. Everything was fresh and full of flavor, without being too salty or oily -- just the way we like it. I was told Next door is their bakery and snack shop (same owner). They offered us some tibit samples -- we especially enjoyed the fresh potato chips and the mixture. So good that we've decided to stop buying snacks from Walmart and Safeway! We also picked up a slice of yellow cake for just $1.99 -- light, not too sweet, and not oily at all. Perfect for health-conscious dessert lovers. I also had their fresh carrot juice -- no ice, no sugar, just pure juice. It even helped calm down a mild cough I had. So refreshing!
