Excellent food and service; staff is super friendly. This is our go to spot for Indian food when visiting friends/family in a Sunnyvale.

Rotis
Pranathi B.

***USP: south Indian restaurant with an expansive menu covering curries, naans, biryanis, dosas, idlis, some chaats and appetizers. I asked about the use of artificial colors and reply was "Definitely not". ***AMBIANCE AND SERVICE: Ambiance was quirky with colorful floral upholstery. A large charminar drawing on the wall with several photo frames surrounding it. Service was outstanding, especially for an Indian restaurant. The lady serving us was very sweet and kept checking up on us often. She asked for feedback as well. The owner also walked up to our table and chatted with us and took our feedback on the food. ***FOOD: I would rate them 3.5 across the board for the food- two reasons: 1. Lack of salt in every dish we ordered. 2. The dishes were lukewarm rather than hot. We were offered complimentary chicken soup to kickstart our meal. It was broth style soup with some cabbage and a few chicken pieces. It was only after we added salt did all the flavors come out and I could see that it was very deep like it was simmering for hours, there was not extra spice to upset our tummies as well. It was very refreshing. *Apollo fish: 3/5: We got Apollo fish as an appetizer. I was truly shocked by how they achieved such vivid red color without artificial colors. This dish lacked salt as well and was soggy and lukewarm. *Dum ka chicken and Palak paneer: 4/5: lack of salt was a common theme as I mentioned earlier. After adding some salt though, I could say that these were well executed curries with subtle flavors. *Chicken dum biryani: 3.5/5: very subtle non explosive flavors unlike other places but seriously it needs salt!!

Mutton Pepper Fry
Vinoda N.

Ordered a mutton pepper fry from this place. Quantity looked good for the price. Problem was it had too much salt and had a burnt smell as well. Screwing up mutton pepper fry is pretty difficult- but these folks did it with aplomb!! I definitely will not recommend nor return!!

Fried Fish fillets

Complementary tomato soup is my favorite, it's a bit sourly which is great to kick start my appetite. Boneless chicken dum biryani has a big portion of rice and small portion of chicken meat. Mysore Masala Dosa with potato filling, it's thin and crispy, and came with three flavorful dipping sauces. Fried fish fillet was a bit disappointed to us, it's a bit fishy and soggy.

When you first walk in you are greeted by a very open space with a lot of artwork on the wall. If you are craving Indian food, I recommend coming here! Everything was so delicious. My favorite was the butter chicken and you have to get it with the garlic naan! *chefs kiss*

I got a recommendation from a friend / and I am glad I took her up on it. The flavors of the food at this place are amazing! I ordered 2 dishes - egg masala and gongura chicken biryani. I did a take out due to evening meetings. I hope to be back with a group of friends - so we can try more dishes! I was sitting in my car on a conf call - the guy who took my ordered walked over to my car and handed me my parcel- 5/5 for service with a smile :)

Latest Promotion - July 2025
Chinmay S.

'Every day is Mother's Day at Mom's Biriyani' - that's the latest promotion at this Indian restaurant that's been around for 3-4 years in Sunnyvale. And based on the experience we had, I see what they mean. We've ordered food from this restaurant a couple of times and we were quite impressed with a couple of their items: the Gilauti Kabab and the Apollo Fish. This time we chose to dine in instead. Decor-wise, it's cute but there's more work needed to make it more welcoming and pretty. It's still rough around the edges. But the service and food won our hearts. We ordered a bunch of things - the Chicken Soup, Mom's Special Mutton Curry with dosa, the Special Idli, and the Masala Dosa. Everything was quite delicious. The spice level is milder than most Indian restaurants in the Bay Area but the flavor is on point and the portions are so generous. I had two huge dosas with my mutton curry. It was so much, we had to take home a lot of leftovers. They also gave us a free biryani and drink (part of the promotion). The owner, Anand, was so kind and courteous - he came to the table to check in on us. A shout out to our server, Arti, her fast and friendly service added to our experience. I am sure we'll be back to try more. Definitely recommend!

I don't know about these stellar ratings... This place was just OK for me and the crew. While the food was tasty, we all left feeling overly stuffed and bloated... Which lead me to conclude; not the greatest quality of ingredients were used or possibly lots of inflammatory ingredients like seed oils and or additives were utilized. The table side service was not the best; service was almost nonexistent sometimes. I had to flag down the staff a few times; additional plate, more water, a container etc. The bill never came. You have to pay for the bill at the front counter. If you order from the Lassi Bar you have to pay for the drinks separately at the second counter. Initially it was fairly confusing and unclear why... The (LASSI BAR) drinks are a separate business or spin-off. I had to pay for 3 Lassi's separately, then take care of the bill on a separate transaction, all while being in the same restaurant that provides table service...very strange. The venue itself needs a decent overhaul. The tables are very small, making it difficult to comfortably dine if one has a bigger party or orders several dishes. We had to combine two tables between 4 of us. The Restroom is run down, there were no paper towels and the toilet seat fell off! #BiriyaniEats: ~ Podi Dosa - 4/5 Tasty Dosa. ~ Mysore Masala Dosa - 4/5 Another solid tasty Dosa with filling. ~ Aloo Gobi Adrak - 2/5 I had Aloo Gobi before countless times, I just never had it like this. This was more like Potato Wedge Fries with curry. Weird... ~ Boneless Vhicken Dum Biriyani - 3/5 The flavor was OK, too much rice and not enough Chicken. The Chicken was chopped up into tiny pieces. ~ Baby Corn Manchurian - 2/5 Skip this. Doesn't really work. It's edible, but not my choice. #LASSIBAR: ~ YOGURT LASSI: Mahabaleshwar Strawberry Lassi - 4/5 I don't need to return...

Every meals bring the love of the mother, when I arrive to this restaurant. I see the joy and chef and manager working hard on prepare this meals. I see the love from the mother, it is just an Indian dishes, but the love need to be Discover. The foods taste great and full with love in it

My Grubhub order!
Bhavana R.

I ordered from this restaurant through Grubhub (screenshot attached). Unfortunately, I got severe food poisoning after eating the biryani. My husband ate the butter chicken and was completely fine, so the issue seems to be specifically with the biryani. This is a serious health and food safety concern, and I want others to be aware before ordering. I'm not sure why the reviews are so high, but my experience was extremely unsafe. Please exercise caution when ordering from here.

My leftovers from lunch

Found this gem today. When I am in that area of Sunnyvale i will definitely return. I was greeted promptly and given time to peruse the menu. (I admit I used my phone to look up a few things I was unfamiliar with.) I ordered the Egg Dum Biryani and a slice of Roti. My order arrived quickly and was so large! I dug in and found it to be very tasty. I then tried the yogurt sauce on the rice - very goord. Then I tried the Salan (had to ask what it was) and wow! That blew me away. So delicious! Not too spicy and actually sort of sweet (I guess that would be the peanut portion of the sauce). After eating only about 1/3 of my meal I was full so was given 2 bowls to put the rest in along with extra Salan and Yogurt. As I was putting the rice in the bowls, I noticed this red piece of bark on top of the rice - turned out to be beet root - another treat! Thank you!!

Gongura Chicken Dum Biryani
K M.

OMG! I'm a huge biryani fan and have tried biryani restaurants across the Bay Area, all over the US and all over India as well. The Gongura Chicken Biryani is arguably the best biryani I've tasted anywhere. Amazing flavor, melt-in-your-mouth chicken, and just the right amount of heat. This really tasted like a biryani a foodie would craft in a kitchen, not the insipid junk most other places try to pass off as authentic. Even the saalan was tasty! We did takeout here yesterday since we live in the neighborhood and had been driving past Moms Biryani for a few months. Besides the Chicken Gongura, we tried the Fish Biryani too which was also delicious (thought the chicken was a fave). The owners are super nice, the portions generous, and the prices very reasonable. The only flaw is that they perhaps did not choose a location that would bring them the foot traffic they deserve. A neighborhood gem that really should be getting way more attention than it currently gets. If you like Indian food, do yourself a favor, drop your lunch or dinner plans for today, and head on over for a feast. You'll thank me later!

Went there for a late lunch on a Sunday mostly because I bought a Groupon and it had decent reviews on Yelp. We had Butter Chicken, Chicken Manchurian, Fish Biryani, Roti, Paratha stuffed with cauliflower and potatoes and mango lassi. The flavor was excellent and the sauce for the butter chicken was divine. I do wish they use chicken thighs w/ bones instead though. I would be a happy girl with just the butter chicken sauce and rice. I initially was not sure how I feel about Fish Biryani but I was pleasantly surprised (Big chunk of fish in the rice). The flavor was mild but it went well with curry or the butter chicken. The chicken Manchurian was a little bit spicy but in a good way. All in all, we enjoyed our meal very much. Our server, Jot, was excellent. Definitely will be back to try other dishes.

For a Saturday morning, the energy was calm -- a good sign for a small spot that could easily get overwhelmed. The waitress set the tone early. Warm, unhurried, she asked how we had heard about the place before taking the order -- the kind of question a restaurant only asks when it is still building its crowd and actually wants to know the answer. Filter coffee arrived without delay, hot, no shortcuts. The upma and mini tiffin combo followed. Portions were generous and the food arrived warm. But dish after dish played it safe right up to the edge of forgettable. The upma had correct texture with none of the assertiveness that makes a good upma worth finishing slowly. The sambar leaned thin. The chutneys were there, present and accounted for, doing the minimum. Everything assembled correctly, nothing bold enough to make you look up from the table. Meenakshi Bhavan gets enough right on a weekend morning to be worth knowing about -- clean space, genuinely warm service, honest portions. The waitress clearly takes pride in the hospitality side of things. The kitchen needs to match that energy with a firmer hand on the seasoning. Good enough for a familiar weekend breakfast. Not yet good enough to become a habit. The paintings on the walls that were Indian and Tamilnadu related was great, but the other art work seemed out of place, not sure what the thought process there was with the management. Things where this could improve: Coffee taste can improve (may be sourcing from a different coffee vendor may help, seemed like a standard Narassu's powder from a grocery shop near by that probably was at least a few months old) Chutneys need a certain kick and that was definitely missing. Cleanliness can be improved for sure.

While the presentation of the biryani was nice - the flavor was rather flat and blah. The Goan curry was harsh - you could taste the spices were raw and had a bitter after taste. The waiter said that this was a spicy dish - not at all ! It was so mild. The fish portion was rather small. The aloo gobi was slightly overcooked and a little too salty. The flavor was truly flavor-ing, and it had just the right amount of kick. I loved the spiciness!! Only note, there were quite a bit of bones in both entrees and I'm taking off a star for this. In the chicken especially, it seemed there were more bones than actual meat which was sad because the chicken was SUPER tasty. Tender and juicy and held the curry just perfect. The naan was also delicious as I prefer a thinner, flakier naan and they delivered! Also you MUST get the mango lassi here, they didn't skimp on the mango and it's the perfect reprieve from the spicy meal Will definitely be back to try their biryanis.
