This was my first time here. I've grown up eating Mexican food. Mostly traditional. Lots of ranch style beans, refried beans, black beans, Mexican rice, grilled chicken, grilled steak and tons of tortillas. I came in for a late lunch, most of the crowd was gone beyond a few wanderers and window shoppers. I ordered the carnitas plate and guacamole. The guacamole was okay but the red spicy salsa was awesome. I could have tucked into a large bowl with some warm tortillas and been thrilled. It contained ground roasted Pasilla pepper, tortillas and sunflower oil. Great heat, slow build but perfect balanced heat. The carnitas were not fried but seemed to be slow cooked then broiled before service. They were served with some warm home style flour tortillas, Mexican rice and baracho beans. For a first time this was a good lunch. I was not impressed with the guacamole but loved the salsa. Order the mixed chips, flour and corn chips. The little flour chips cut into squares were a perfect balance for the salsa. It was good enough that I took a bag of chips and salsa for later. They were nice enough to pack extra salsa. South is a mix of traditional and modern Mexican food, the menu has some surprises with Cuban influence (Cuban burrito with plantains) that seemed really interesting. If you are looking for modern Mexican with really good salsa hit this place. Let me know if I'm right about the salsa. P.S. Got back late to the hotel and still had the salsa in the refrigerator. The South has super delicious food and I totally recommend coming here to try some Mexican food! They have great drinks and super good food! I would come here if you like spicy food! They have the most amazing salsa because you could get spicy and sweet or savory and spicy. It all Varys and our expiernece there was so great cause the staff would treat you like they have known you for a while! This was very good that is why I am giving them 5 stars! read more

The indoor or outdoor seating options are nice. It feels like a hip tex mex venue. The chili lime chicken is seasoned well. The staff is really friendly. Great location - you can shop other venues before/after your meal. the portions are a little small and the coleslaw salad really should be made to order or in smaller batches to ensure freshness. read more

I've been here a couple times and the food and drinks were good, but today we couldn't even be seated because it was a sunny Sunday (and Cinco de Mayo) and they literally had two servers working the whole restaurant and no host/hostess. A big line formed behind us because "please wait to be seated" and nobody ever came so after 10 minutes we just left and went to Fire instead. Fire had 4 or 5 servers working a smaller restaurant. This is a management problem. There was nothing wrong with the servers themselves as they were running around like crazy. It seems understaffing is an issue here because last time service was slow as well and the servers were overworked for the number of people in the restaurant. I feel bad for the servers working here. read more

Big let down, things went 'South' here! The sign at the entrance says "Latin food: Cuba, Brazil, Spain, Argentina.." etc. turns out the only South American dish is a 29 dollar Argentine steak. Everything else was tacos and burritos (Mexican food, nothing South American really). They shouldn't advertise Latin food and only serve Mexican food. The quality of the Mexican food and the cocktail I ordered was not worth 30 bucks. I ordered a Mojito (the only Cuban "dish", and the lime wedges in the cocktail weren't fresh... they were brownish... the Mission Bowl was nothing better than a chipotle burrito bowl. Actually chipotle serves fresher food. The only reason I'm giving two stars is because the waiter was nice. Otherwise: 1 star or less. read more

Great spot with nice outdoor seating. The service was fantastic... greeted with a smile, very helpful and polite. Quick and attentive. The menu is nice with lots of accommodating choices. I got the prickly pear margarita with the chips and guacamole, all of it was great. The only reason for 4 stars is that the margarita was $11, pretty steep for shot of tequila and some juice. Two words: HAPPY HOUR. Being that the upstairs bar is for the 21 and older crowd, it's a good place to grab a late night beer and snack, or some after-shift food for industry folk (although a patio table on a late summer night is hard to pass up). Large outdoor heater columns look like they should be cozy come winter. My waitress was friendly and told me they were just starting weekly lunch and dinner specials which seemed a good way to try something different and not on their regular menu. After a long day, I can appreciate a $2 domestic in a frosty glass and a round of $2 tacos for the table (Happy Hour is 4-6 weekdays, and again after 8 pm). I'm a fan of this place for a date night, as the smaller tables feel 'intimate' and the Latin food is truly modern. (Try the Cubano burrito!) It's also a prime spot for a lunch date, or a nice big steak. YUM! Cocktail menu is creative, and always inventive. Give it a try! It's WORTH IT! read more

I discovered South in Leavenworth a couple of years ago and was really impressed with the food. The Wenatchee location is no different. The food is fresh and vibrant with tons of flavors. Unlike most Mexican restaurants, there aren't giant globs of sour cream, cheese, and guacamole drowning your food. Every component in the dish is designed to work together to create the maximum amount of flavor. Anyway the food is delicious without being overkill. I also love that they combine a lot of flavors from all over Latin America. I really wish South would open a location in the Seattle area. This is a really solid restaurant and I highly recommend it. I have been here a few times for various reasons. The last time we went we had an especially good table outside. The food is always good and the flower chips and guac are one of the best I have ever had. People say this place is pricey but it is on par with many similar concept restaurants. I classify South as affordable upscale Mexican cuisine. The inside is well decorated and the drinks are always delicious. Try the salsa bar. read more

Celiacs rejoice, this place knows how to handle even the most extreme gluten sensitivity. Went here with a friend who is extremely sensitive. The server, Sam, made sure to verify everything with the kitchen, was in constant communication with the kitchen, and asked all the right questions and gave great advice. She knew the corn tortillas chips were made in the same fryer with the flour tortilla chips, she made sure the kitchen used a separate and clean prep area... the works. And the kitchen staff was also great. They made sure to let us know the food was not coming quite as quickly because they were taking extreme precautions. Meal was fantastic. We both had the steak tacos, so they made mine the the same precautions as well, just so the server couldn't mix them up... great plan guys. It took 15 minutes or so extra, but that's excellent. Take all the time you need to make sure no one has an issue. Best steak tacos I have EVER had, seriously. They were mind blowingly good. I cannot recommend this place enough, especially if you have food allergies or sensitivity. read more

HUGE disappointment. My wife, friend, and I visited South recently and while the service, cocktails, and chips/salsa were great, the food was miserable. My friend who was in town is a human garbage disposal and in the 15 years of knowing him, I have never seen him complain about his food, much less return it. He had chicken enchiladas and I had fish tacos. Both orders were sent back as they were extremely subpar and unappetizing. Having worked in the restaurant industry in the past, it takes a lot for me to send food back to the kitchen. There is no way the cooks in this kitchen are tasting the food that they prepare, anyone with a palate would find these two entrees to be unacceptable. The chicken enchiladas appeared to be canned chicken?? (server would not confirm or deny) and the fish tacos had ZERO seasoning, some bland cabbage and poorly prepared tortillas. You guys have an awesome location, staff, and atmosphere. Taste the food!!! You can do so much better. read more

We went out to lunch as a small group over the weekend. It was personally my first time at South. We were forgotten about after being seated, and were not asked to order until quite some time after being seated. The food was okay, but definitely over-priced. We were also not asked about our food or offered any water refills. The staff did seem friendly otherwise though, but no plans to return. read more

We came here on a quick trip to Wenatchee last month, and were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. My kids are super picky...okay, so am I. Hubby eats anything. We all devoured our food. I ordered steak tacos, my daughter got rice (yeah, she's 3), hubby got some kind of burrito, and my son got the kids chicken tacos. There was not a crumb left on any of our plates. The downside is, a few weeks after dining here, we went to a mexican restaurant near our home. My son ordered chicken tacos again. They hey have a TV on the wall but they have no cable or internet service. Amazing food. I've just about tried every single dish in their menu. The burrito cubano is one of my favorites. The relleno is also amazing. Prices I think are a little high, but given how good the food is, it's a non issue for me. The drinks are also amazing. Their Mangorita is a must have if you go there.
