I had a few friends come through town and they had a dog, and Southbay was so accommodating and happy to help. We ordered inside, and paid. I ordered their salad with brisket, very filling! The salad is pretty large, and the brisket is $2.00 more but I was very satisfied. It was a brisk day and even with our odd request we were checked on and taken great care of. I really enjoyed this place and the barbeque was excellent. It's a very casual funky place with both indoor and outdoor eating places. Large garage doors open the outdoors into the interior of the restaurant. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, and although funky and casual the place was very clean and well organized. Our server was very friendly, courteous and extremely professional. She extplained the beer options efficiently based on indiviciual taste and did not disappoint with the suggestions. Their beer menu is huge. The also have what appeared to be an extensive whiskey menu too, plus the usual soft drinks. I had the slow cooked brisket with cornbread, instead of a bun, and sides of mac and cheese and the baked beans. One word- yummy! The brisket was so tender it nearly melted on the fork and had enormous flavor. I slathered on some of the special sauce in the squeeze bottle and it was tangy, a bit spicy and ever so delicious. It went so well with the meat. The baked beans were cooked just right and thick and full of flavor too. The mac and cheese was very good with a hint of jalapeno that I like so much. Im currently going through a remodel at my house, so while the kitchen was pretty much blocked, was eating out almost daily. Having a craving for pork ribs I headed over to Southbay Dickerson's for the first time in ages. I went for a late lunch/ very early dinner. Because of the time of day, the restaurant was mostly empty with the exception of customers picking up take out. For eat in pork ribs one has a choice of 1/3 or 1/2 rack with a choice of two sides. If you forgo one or both the sides, that is deducted from the menu price. I smartly choose the 1/3 rack. The ribs were heavy with meat and fall off the bone tender. Though each table has squeeze bottles of two different sauces, I would have preferred a bit more sauce as served, else no other complaints. Of course the prices have gone ups bit since the last time I was here, but what hasn't. (Just check the price per pound at the supermarket). All in all a very satisfying meal. The location on Legion, is a few blocks east of the downtown core in a more light industrial zone. Having said this, I observed no homeless encampments anywhere nearby. Street parking is quite ample. Almost everything was dry, from the brisket, to the cornbread and the mac n cheese. The pulled pork was decent, but the smoked sausage and potato salad was mediocre at best. Pickles cost an extra dollar for a small cup and was mostly an assortment of pickled bell peppers and onions. As a Texan, I wasn't expecting the best from Washington barbecue but this was depressing. To top it all off, it cost $26 a plate and upwards of $5 for a sweet tea. Bottom Line - This is no Arthur Bryant's or Jack Stack BBQ, but for the Puget Sound, this place is A-OK (3 stars). The BBQ brisket is tasty and I like the coleslaw and mac n cheese sides. If you're in the area and have a protein craving, I'd recommend this place, but it's not worth a drive specifically to come here. Southbay came highly recommended by my family, and it definitely had the Yelp reviews to back it up, but I really can't say it's the "best of the Northwest" for BBQ. The Food: I had brisket and I found it to be too fatty. I don't mind some fat (no fat = no flavor), but the meat was too fatty for my taste. However, I did enjoy their seasoning of the meat. My sides were baked beans and mac n' cheese. I loved the spiciness of the mac n' cheese (diced jalapenos are added), but the pasta was very overdone, leaving a soggy consistency. The baked beans were simply OK. The cornbread was dry (very disappointing). The Service: We walked in and were eye-balled by the two guys behind the counter, but there was no greeting. When we finally got to the till they took notice. A restaurant may have great reviews and a loyal following, but a business can never rest on its laurels when it comes to great service. We stopped by Olympia on the way to Portland to get gas and decided to grab a bite to eat at Southbay Dickerson's BBQ. We couldn't have gotten any luckier! I ordered the Beef brisket and it was soft and delicious. The bbq sauce was not too sweet, allowing me to appreciate the full flavors of the beef brisket. The brisket was tender and the outer, crunchy part had a blast of flavor. We hope to stop by here again on our way back to Seattle. One annoying thing about this restaurant was that half of the entrees they purported to be offering were actually not being offered. Talk about false advertising. The only reason this may be somewhat upsetting is because given the beef brisket was so delicious, I could only imagine how the pulled pork or rack of ribs would have tasted like. It's not good practice to advertise entree items that are actually not being offered. I'm hoping this was idiosyncratic to my experience. Overall, a solid experience. They also offer an array of REAL sugar soda beverages for those who are into that kind of thing. Beverages were $2.50 which was also surprising. I know good BBQ, this ain't it. The sides were tiny for $4/ea. The ribs were coated in seasoned salt so thick its all you can taste. As a true southerner, BBQ fanatic, and self proclaimed pit master, this place was embarrassing to say the least. Okay there were a few shining moments. The young lady who took my order was patient, friendly, and helpful as she guided me through the menu and made suggestions along the way. I came in at 12:30 on August 9th for lunch with some friends. We went to the main counter and after the waitress asked if we were eating at in or if the order was to go. We told her we would eat in and would like to sit outside. She asked us to meet her at our table and she would take our order. I ordered the "Two Meat Combo Meal" and asked for brisket and ribs, and for sides asked for the Macaroni and Cheese and Potato Salad. The plate looked great. I was surprised to only have two bones for the ribs but a good portion of the brisket. The smoke flavor in the ribs was too strong for my tastes. I doused the ribs with their BBQ sauce which is very good and would consider buying some. I base BBQ restaurants on the quality of their baby back ribs and was disappointed in theirs. The brisket was very good and enjoyed every last bite of it. The Mac & Cheese was very good, would come back just for that. The potato salad was a little bland for my taste. Their butter was sweet and creamy and was a perfect pair onto their cornbread which was excellent. There seemed to be only one waitress for the indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered through Postmates delivery service. The restaurant's portion of the bill should have been about $70. They charged $107. I had to contact Postmates for a copy of the receipt. Upon review, I see they overcharged for every item, then tacked on a gratuity charge though we obviously didn't eat there! Plus, the brisket was more fat than beef; the sides portions were tiny; and the spicy sauce was a gloopy, congealed mess. Do not order from this place. There are many problems with this place: 1) It is too expensive. All things are expensive, now a days, but this place takes the cake. $2 for pinball? 2) The servings are skimpy. The ribs were tiny, but to be honest, tasty. 4) The corn bread was just jiffy corn bread, with too much baking powder. So, they kept all but one door closed, let in all the flies anyway, and then I had to sit in my own butt-crack sweat waiting for ribs they forgot to make -- in A RIB JOINT!!! -- (you had ONE job!) -- with flies crawling up my legs and in my drinks. ... And it's not like we were there at 9am on a Tuesday, BTW. It was Saturday at 5 PM - you know, at dinner time -- with a blast oven cooking tarty ribs and for this once in a lifetime opportunity, I paid ... 7) $140 for 4 people. (For gross food [except the ribs]) At this price, I should be f***ing satisfied in taste and quantity. I was not. In any way. 8) All the pictures on the walls are melting or something. They are all droopy and greasy and gross .. I don't know what that has to do with anything, but it's weird. BOTTOM LINE: Ribs: 7/10. EVERYTHING ELSE: 1.5/10. Save your money, and go somewhere else. OR better yet, just go to the store and make all this stuff ... it will taste better, and you'll save like, 90%. What a crappy place. I'm sure they'll close soon. Full disclosure: I've lived in the south so I know good barbecue. This is the only local BBQ spot near downtown so maybe they're banking in desperation. Ranch House BBQ is the best in the area, but it's about a 20-30 minute drive up the 101 I ordered a 1/3rd rack of ribs, mac and cheese cornbread and a beer. The beer was good. The ribs were tough, having to scrape it off the bone with my teeth tough. I like my ribs so tender they slide off the bone as they should. The rub was THICK, like caked on there. It overwhelmed the meat and got stuck in my teeth. Good barbecue speaks for itself and doesn't need seasoned to death if made properly. Their barbecue sauce is really sweet and had a strong tomato taste. I don't like ketchup on my meat, but if you like ketchup this is the sauce for you. The mac was dry, not creamy at all, and I think it had peppers in it? The peppers didn't bother me, but that def needs to be in the description of the side. The dryness ruled it out for me as a never get again. Their customer service was great, good ambience. I had to try this BBQ joint out being that I was born and raised in Georgia with family roots all over Alabama. I miss good BBQ from back South and Southbay was recommended to me by a good friend. Atmosphere is laid back and casual with the smell of glorious smoked BBQ wafting throughout the whole building. It very much reminded me of some local country Alabama BBQ joints with how they had everything set up and such. Nice and open layout with a very family friendly vibe. Food was subpar and could have been a whole lot better compared to the BBQ I was raised on. But hey, this is Olympia so I can't expect real Southern bbq. My daughter had the kid chicken sandwich. The pulled chicken was dryer than the Sahara desert and my daughter wasn't too fond of it because of the dryness. The thin sliced tritip sandwich was served on an Italianesque white hoagie bun and it really tasted more like an Italian pepper beef sandwich than a BBQ one (even with bbq sauce on it). This sandwich confused me. Cornbread was weirdly mushy and crunchy at the same time (Husband said that the sweet topping made it taste more like a dessert). I'm used to unsweetened cornbread but I liked how they didn't go overboard and make the whole cornbread taste like birthday cake like most restaurants I've tried (the mushy part was quite savory). Potato salad tasted and looked store bought - not the best texture either. I wouldn't order this side again. Brisket surprised me - I'm used to sliced brisket in my sandwiches so I wasn't expecting it to come out in chunks like pulled pork but it was really flavorful and juicy - I didn't have to use any extra sauce. The brisket was the best thing that my family and I tried. I would definitely come back just for the brisket sandwich. Another note: BBQ sauce is OK. Kind of watery - I prefer thicker sauces. I understand it bbq so it's obviously preprepared but it's not as good if it's not served hot! However my ribs had a great charred skin with good flavor and not overly dry at all. The corn bread however had good flavor but oh man was it dry I could only take bite of it. Saving grace of side was the Mac- SoO good. Forsure homemade! They have globs of cheese that was clearly once shredded and they put some green chili's. YUMM they have me sold on the Mac so I will be coming back hoping for better experience!
