Had breakfast this morning at Southern Lunch. Sausage patty, 2 eggs, hashbrowns, gravy, pancake and ice tea ($5.95) Gravy wasn't homemade, but was pretty good over the delicious hash browns. Eggs cooked just right (over medium), and our waitress set a pitcher of tea on our table and it was excellent. Pancake was also very good. All of this, with a drink included for $5.95 is a pretty good deal. On my next visit, I tried the country fried steak for breakfast. It was okay. Some bites were chewy, while some were tender. Like many others, we had a healthy breakfast here. The service was outstanding. Frequented by locals, the staff welcomes new comers with fresh coffee and a warm reception. Each of us had a different dish and the talking stopped at the table----we loved the food. I loved the location by the tracks and the railroad decor inside that celebrated the history of the area. This was an interesting place to find because there are three buildings clustered together and all are bearing the signage "Southern Lunch."Customers exiting the restaurant helped us find the correct entrance however, so it wasn't a problem. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The food was ok. My fellow diners, as well as myself, all agreed that the dishes were neither excellent nor disappointing. They were simply unexceptional. I had a sea bass hoagie and my fish tasted vaguely like cat fish, but it was still acceptable. One of my fellow diners had chicken and dumplings and the dumplings were more similar to noodles, but it was flavorful and a good comfort food. It just wasn't deeply bodied like what I grew up with and still make myself. Their salads were fresh and well dressed. read more

From the chicken pie, to the chicken and dumplings, to the chicken livers, and on and on it goes... Even the dessert they serve is excellent!! The chicken pie was excellent and one of the best I ever had. It was so freaking good! I can seriously eat it multiple times a week! I didn't want it to end but it had to. As for the sides, the mac and cheese was so cheesy and taste really good, the watermelon was nice and sweet just how I liked it, the corn bread was just right and helped filled me up, and the sweet tea was on point! What made the food even better was the service there. The waitress was so kind and definitely demonstrated true Southern Hospitality. Southern Lunch is a local hit!! They've been open since my mom was in high school and I only just knew they even existed a few years ago. I felt like I wasn't a part of the "in crowd". Starting with Breakfast.... they give me a home cooked fresh breakfast without actually having to cook it at home. REAL eggs and fresh cooked pancakes (not re-heated) just warm my soul every time. And the prices are awesome. For less than $8 you can get a Breakfast Meat (Tons of bacon), Eggs, Pancake/Biscuit/Toast, a side & drink!! Then comes Lunch/Dinner. The only thing I pretty much order is the Dipped Fried Chicken or the Fried Chicken with the dip on the side lol. The few times i've navigated outside that I wasn't too impressed. Everything else kind of felt like a rip-off soul food restaurant. For example the Mac & Cheese doesn't use real shredded cheddar cheese. It's more like the Kraft Mac. But that dipped chicken makes up for it 10 fold! There used to be a restaurant yeaaaaarrrrs ago called Ms. Minis who served the best dipped chicken i've ever tasted and Southern Lunch is the closest i've ever had to it. This place was great!! What a throwback; we all three loved it! My daughter's fried shrimp was AWESOME & I will get that next visit! We tried the broccoli casserole & the squash casserole which were both like my grandmother used to make. The sweet tea, collards, cornbread, stewed tomatoes & service were all really good. Usually when I place to-go orders I just sit at a bench/counter and twiddle my thumbs but here they struck up nice conversations, kept me updated on my order, and even complimented me as I left. Even the patrons eating were friendly, giving off a welcoming vibe and joking around. The food was good. Got the meatloaf, cornbread, mash potatoes with gravy, peaches, and strawberry cobbler. Only down side was finding some egg shells in the meatloaf but everything else was yummy. Would have been 5 stars if not for that small error, nonetheless I had a great experience. So so good! Portions are huge, and lunch plates pricing includes drink so you can't even complain about the price. I had the chicken pie which was wonderful, full of meat and topped with a delicious gravy. My husband had the fried chicken which was crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. Homemade bbq sauce was a delicious accompaniment! All of the sides were wonderful as well, with tons to choose from like broccoli casserole, cabbage, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and more. There are several other places like this in Lexington. Meat and veggies, burgers, sandwiches, etc. I find that they have slightly higher prices than their competitors. However, the food is still wonderful. It's always clean on the inside and doesn't take too long to get served. It will be full in the morning and is sometimes hard to find a parking spot. The service is lousy. After the waitress brought my coffee I waited and waited, and finally had to ask for service. Perhaps I would have understood if they were busy, but there were perhaps 3 other tables with diners and the rest of the tables had no one at them. The atmosphere is just nonexistent. Now, about the food. The fried chicken is tasty, but the pieces (2) and portion size is small. The dinner rolls have no flavor and were not served hot as I had requested. The "butter" for the dinner rolls is not real butter. The mashed potatoes are not real but from a box and without flavor. The only decent thing about the whole meal was the coffee. I do not recommend this place to anyone looking for a good, wholesome meal. You would be better off going to McDonalds or Bojangles. read more
