Chicken Casserole, Baked Apples, Macaroni and Cheese
Jessie D.

Oh, Southern Lunch. This place is the definition of the name. Their specialities are all things southern. Nestled alongside the train tracks, it's a small place, but it is hoppin'! I ordered from the specials board that they have posted in all dining areas. I had the chicken casserole, apples, and macaroni and cheese. My husband had his usual, a non-menu item called "Duck's Chicken" with fries and green beans. It is a deliciously breaded chicken cut into pieces like nuggets/bites. Paired with some ranch and they are to die for. My chicken casserole was some that reminded me of church potlucks after Sunday morning preaching. It was that warm and fuzzy feeling. Paired with feeling like I was being waited on by someone's Mema, it just gave me all the comforting feels. There was enough to feed three people and I felt so bad for not bringing the leftovers home, but we were going to be out and about all day. This is a hot spot for lunch in the area, especially with folks from uptown and a lot of blue-collar folks so you may have a short wait, but you'll be glad you waited! Also, a lot of places in Lexington have different hours, so check before you make the drive!

the menú is simple well cooked Southern food. It was busy and the food still came out on time. The crowd is much older and have obviously been going there for a long time. It was my first time going there and the food was delicious I ordered the Southern fried chicken with 2 sides I choose mac n cheese and french fries. My husband had the catfish with greens and cabbage which as a Southerner he really enjoyed. The food was good my only complaint if any is feeling out of place as a brown New Yorker and that the food while great wasn't very seasoned. As a Caribbean I like well seasoned meat my NC native husband couldn't stop raving about it so I'm sure we'll be back soon. The corn bread was great !

OMG slap your grandma country style food! Pardon the expression but if you are in the mood for authentic southern style food and hospitality this is exactly what you are looking for. This is what I grew up on with my grandma in the kitchen. Delicious and full of flavor. I had the fried chicken with pickle beets and scallop tomatoes (stewed tomatos). It all took me back to my childhood and awesome memories of family. I highly recommend you give this place a try. I don't think you will be disappointed. The price wasn't bad either.

Yesterday I decided to go to Lexington and check out this place I found on Google Maps. I got there and was a little confused at first because three different buildings had the sign for this place. When I found it, it was packed. I had to sit at the bar and then there were people waiting to get in. I ordered the fried chicken plate and was shocked to discover it came with three pieces, when two is normally what I'm expecting. I really thought the chicken was seasoned and cooked very well and the sides were really nice too. I love that they have the option for rice, and also that they used real silverware instead of plastic. I can definitely see myself going back.

Our server was so sweet that day. This place gives off Small town vibes for our little town. If you're in the mood for some country food this is the spot to go. Unfortunately my chicken was over cooked and a little tough but it was still good lol. They have odd hours though so be sure to check.

Today was my first time dining here. I was very pleasantly surprised to find a down home, country restaurant so close to home. We went around 1:30 and it was still quite full. The booths were filled with happy folks who seemed to be very comfortable there. There is a good selection of food from country, seafood, pasta, etc. They also offer daily specials displayed on the white boards. I had the Reuben sandwich combo and enjoyed it very much. Their sweet tea is perfect (if you know anything about sweet tea in the south) and the server very accommodating and kind. I learned as we were leaving that there is quite a history to this restaurant. The young lady on the register is the granddaughter of the second owner of this establishment that was begun in 1925!

Fried Chicken , chicken livers. Both are the best. All of the food is homemade, and the portions are usually enough for two meals

Hey family. Happy Saturday! I tried Miss Johnnie Mae's a while back and I'm happy to report that I…read moreliked it much better than when I tried it prior. My initial introduction was when they were located in Stock and Grain Food Hall. I had wanted to try them for a while and luckily I was invited to a Yelp Event where I was able to sample some items. In all fairness, I absolutely loved the service but maybe it was an off night but at the time I wasn't a fan. But as some months passed, they are no longer in Stock and Grain but in a food truck in High Point. I highly suggest following their Facebook page for dates and times where you can catch them. The service was still wonderful and the food was really good. The sweet potato cornbread is one of my favs and the chicken wings and catfish bites were fried to perfection. I love collard greens but do understand, everyone makes them differently. My family is from eastern NC so we make ours savory, theirs have a little sweetness to it. I don't mind it but this time around was so much better, it was very well balanced. The mac and cheese was delicious as well. Although not pictured, do check out their Russian tea drink. I felt very nostalgic and I have no other words but it was great. I try to savor it when I get some. I wish he sold them in half gallon jugs because I would buy it. That's how good it is. They have other items like Rasta pasta, oxtails, pork chops, and turkey wings. I can't wait to come back and try more food. Give them a follow and check them out. You won't be disappointed.

They were absolutely incredible (in no particular order because they were all perfect): Lemon pepper wings: Huge, seasoned and prepared perfectly! Four large wings per order. Yams: Incredible, I haven't had yams in years and really enjoyed them. Mac and Cheese: Very, very good, enjoyed. Sweet potato cornbread: Incredible as well, sweet and moist. We will make it a point to visit more frequently!

They are located in a nice little spot with ample parking and it's easy accessible. The interior is simple but clean. Plenty of seating. The ladies who work here are very friendly and helpful, came around a few times to check on me, offered fried side to go with the greens , offered a refill on my sweet tea. Great service! About the food. Probably the BEST FRIED CHICKEN in the area. I really can't judge on that because I haven't sampled other fried chicken in the vicinity but based on my own research of sampling fried chicken all over North Carolina, I feel confident in my assumption. It was fried just right. It was SEASONED. It had a very nice batter that was crunchy and the chicken in the inside was tender and juicy. Every bite was tender and juicy. These ladies should teach a cooking class on how to make fried chicken-to other restaurants. The SWEET POTATOES were perfectly cooked and flavored in butter and cinnamon. You could eat it as a dessert. But not overly sweet. Just right. The GREENS were tender and seasoned perfectly. Greens and fried side with their delicious CORNBREAD could be a meal in itself. The SWEET TEA-perfect! All around, best home cooked food/soul food you can get. I will be back and I highly recommend for true SOUTHERN COMFORT food.

Between excellent service, from the host to the kitchen staff, and being a bright, cheery place decorated in a modern farmhouse feel (only complaint is the HARD seating), we love this place. The food is always delicious and seasoned perfectly with FLAVOR. For the appetizer, the Salad Pizza is absolutely scrumptious and was recommended by our server our first visit here last year. Honestly, it keeps bringing us back. The flavors are incredible. It has feta, mozzarella, topped with organic greens, shaved onions, tossed in a lemon/dijon dressing with shaved parmesan. It's a flavor bomb in the mouth. The meatloaf, is to die for. If you're a meatloaf eater this is for you. It's so tender and juicy and perfectly seasoned. Melts in your mouth and the sauce on top is the perfect blend of sweet and savory to top it off. For my two sides this time I chose the fried brussels sprouts and the greens. The greens are always seasoned perfectly and the brussels sprouts were crispy and full of flavor. They tasted even better dipped in my meatloaf sauce so that was a win-win. My boyfriend had the special which was short ribs. For his two sides, he had greens and green beans. The short rib was perfectly tender and absolutely delicious full of flavor and moist for him. The green beans and the greens were also perfect as well full of flavor, just enough fat and butter. It's a great little date spot or a family dinner. They also have outdoor seating covered with umbrellas. There's a bar inside with a TV if you choose to go watch sports and the food here is always on point full of flavor and makes you want to come back and try more things on the menu. You can't go wrong at southern roots.

We had a great experience at Southern Roots. Between the table, we tried the Gouda Pimento Dip,…read moreshort ribs, the Granny Smith salad with shrimp, and the crab-stuffed trout. Everything was delicious, although my partner wasn't a huge fan of the short ribs. The trout and salad were both excellent. The cheese dip was delicious. The sides were a standout, especially the Parmesan spaghetti squash, which I highly recommend. We had to put some extra salt on the sides, but that's purely personal preference. They also had several reasonably priced drink specials, which was a nice surprise. The service was amazing--friendly, attentive, and a big part of what made the meal so enjoyable. Overall, a really solid dining experience, and I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu.
