DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. Mechanic is unscrupulous and predatory! My wife brought our 2020 Subaru Ascent in last week for a brake job. She left the car with him to get the job done. When she returned hours later she was told "you need a brake job and an oil change -- that'll be $165!" He claimed the charge was for "diagnostics." He had not done any of the work she requested on the vehicle and told her he did not have time to do the work on it that day. She says he got very aggressive with her when she questioned the charge. Agree with other reviewers here who say this fellow "fleeces you depending on your level of car knowledge and whether or not you live in the area. Ridiculously overpriced... greedy, unhelpful." Don at Southold Auto Repair fixed our flat tire right away and for a good value so my family could get back in the road safely. We are grateful for his help. Our family - including our five-year-old - was driving and felt a flat tire. We stopped at the closest gas station to check and they recommended Southold Auto Repair. Don checked all our tires, fixed the flat, checked the oil, and provided us with new valve caps for a reasonable price. We were back in the road in thirty minutes. Glad we found our preferred mechanic on the North Fork. read more

Overcharges, dishonest, unprofessional - fleeces you depending on your level of car knowledge and whether or not you live in the area. Ridiculously overpriced. Demands cash, no credit cards accepted. A reputable auto repair shop accepts cards - Don doesn't. He demands cash up front. Really greedy, unhelpful, and inconvenient. He upsells repairs you absolutely do not need. We left feeling swindled. This is the kind of place that ruins it for the reputable repair shops. Avoid at all costs. And please read through all the fake reviews which seem to be written by friends and family in Mayberry RFD. They sound like they bake apple pies for him too. read more

My daughter went to have a flat fixed, never fixed the flat use a spare charge of $65 and then and then $35 to screw in the license plate. Total bill was 9777 would not recommend this repair shop at All and I will never go back. I would give you no Store, but I have to give you at least one. read more

The problem with Don's business is not competence; Dave is a solid mechanic, as is Don. I like them both. But as a local business owner, I feel obligated to warn potential customers. The problem is that Don's well-known reputation for adding on bogus fees ("lift" fees, "diagnostic" "storage" fees, etc) is accurate and a long-standing dishonest practice. While some of the reviewers say he only does this for people from out of town, rest assured, he does this with locals as well, whenever he can get away with it. The straw that broke the camel's back is that I dropped off my Toyota because it was making a noise. The shop quoted me a price over the phone of 385 to fix two pulleys. When it came time to pay the bill it was upwards of 500. Plus an extra 25 bucks for seafoam. Plus a $17 fee for using a card, not cash. Plus, the noise was not fixed. Plus the battery light was now on. I drove it down the block then brought it back and Dave determined it needed an alternator and he could do it pending Don's approval; 2-3 hours work. End of day Friday Don calls and say he doesn't want to do the job because it's time-consuming. Oh, and there's also 70 dollar diagnostic fee he's charging me because he just diagnosed that it was an alternator. So he didn't fix what the initial problem was, and left me hanging with a car that could leave me stranded at the end of the day before a weekend when all the other shops would be closed. Then had the balls to charge me 70 plus dollars to diagnose what Dave had already diagnosed that morning. So if you are considering using his services, this is the character of the person you are dealing with. Technical skills good but absolutely zero integrity. Shame on you, Don. Your shop is clean but your business practices unfortunately, are dirty. read more

I had an odd noise coming out of the back of my car so took it to Don. He found the problem - a piece of my exhaust had rusted out. He could have replaced the entire system for me, but suggested that was overkill. I just needed a new piece welded into the muffler. He didn't have the equipment so recommended another place who could do the job. Saved me over $500!! Auto repair shops get a bad wrap sometimes but I glad I found this place. I trust that Don's recommendations will be honest and in the customer's best interest! Highly recommended!!! read more

I can't say enough about how great this place is! I live in NYC and was told by a garage here that I needed new tires, brakes and a host of other repairs on my car that only has 17K miles on it. I called Don because of the reviews here and the fact that they are around the corner from where my sister lives. Let me just tell you that I have never met a more honest guy. He took my car apart and checked out everything! At the end of the day... what I needed was two tires, an alignment and a NYS inspection! The service was great and my car runs fantastic! What an incompetant clown the owner of this shop is. I drove my car to his shop for a pre-sale inspection. The owner drove the car into his garage and up onto a lift. When I went to pickup the car an 90 minutes later, I asked about the inspection and was told "It won't fucking start" I thought he was just joking. HE WASN'T. This genius mechanic did something stupid to the car and after an hour and a half doing nothing decided he was going to roll it off of the lift into the shop's lot and be done with it. I got very angry and told him he was not returning my car until he fixed it, since he was respsonsible for whatever went wrong. He argued, screamed, shouted, cursed and we had to call Shold PD to sort things out. Ultimately he got the car started (absolutely nothing is wrong with the car: the battery and starter work perfectly) and never did the inspection. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS IDIOT, HE THINK"S HE's GOD'S MECHANIC BECAUSE THERE ARE FEW CHOLICES IN SOUTHOLD. You've been warned. read more

We were visiting family nearby & on our way to the ferry to head home when our tire pressure indicator light came on. We looked and found a screw in our tire. Did a quick search online & saw that we were only a mile from Southold Automotive Corp. We pulled in and asked if they could fix it. We told them that we were on the way to the ferry & asked if I would need to reschedule our departure time. He checked his watch & said no problem! Our tire was fixed & we were out of there in less than 1/2 hour. Helpful, HONEST, reasonably priced! THANK YOU! They knew we were not locals & the chance of our coming back for service was slim.... they could have ripped us off- but they went above & beyond to get us to the ferry on time & most importantly...HONEST! read more

I had just moved to southold, and inevitably hit a deer on my way to work- they helped me out so much and because I'm a young kid (22) he even reduced the price for me a touch. I had a great experience with Southold Automotive! On my first visit he went through my entire car just to check it out and make sure everything was functioning, even for just a simple oil change! Additionally they topped up the rest of my fluids free of charge (great for a recent college grad like me!) and advised me of competitive pricing should I decide to get my parts from somewhere else in the future. He even called a few months later to follow up and make sure my car was running smoothly, I wish I still lived in the Southold area. Car door latch broke while visiting. Called around to get it fixed. I told the guy here that I was visiting would call around as he could not see the car till the afternoon. (can't drive home with a door that comes open). He told me that he is the guy in the area to fix such a problem given his experience with such work. I took him at his word and brought it in the afternoon. Everything about the experience was discordant and "off". I called around noon to confirm that I would be coming and he told me that he would look at it but if it was a big thing he would not be able to fix it. I was not sure what he meant, but what he apparently meant was I will not help you in the end.... which is what happened. When I got there he told me it would be 15 minutes so i went across the street to the grocery store to pick up a couple of things, came back in 10 minutes and he sort of ignored me, fiddled around on the computer as I waited, and then suddenly walked out to see the car without saying anything. I saw that he was looking at the car so I followed him out. He fiddled around with the door and suggesting that I tie the door closed with a rope several times, even when I told him I was looking for a fix, he finally made a few phone calls to tell me that the part wouldn't arrive in time (all he knew was we were visiting at this point), and when I told him we had till Friday late afternoon, he told me the part would not come in time. I called Riverhead Toyota who told me that they had just spoken with the guy and told me that if he had ordered that part right then, they would have gotten it the next day!! (Wednesday). The place is posted with positive messages about respect and courtesy etc... pics of family, and things to make you feel it is a small town operation with small town personality. As the experience proceeded I was aware of feeling like some privelaged out-of towner to be shown that I was not that special. (I have an 11 year old beat up minivan... so very aware of not being special). To be fair, there was no overt rudeness, it was more passive aggressive. I suspect that he gets a good hair of high demanding high powered people given the area. The silver lining was his coworker who noticed that the tires seemed low on air, he checked them and adjusted a tire and wished me well. Way above and beyond.... but the door remained unfixed. I would like to think that indeed he would not have enough time to do the job, but the fact that the entire time he made it known in several ways that he would not do the job makes me doubt that interpretation. Why tell me to come to him just to refuse the job and waste my time, I don't know!! read more

Worst customer service ever, my wife even got cursed at by the mechanic! They took it upon themselves to re service her rotors, when she dropped off the car she asked them to "check my brakes" they didn't even call to say "this is what we suggest needs to be done" they also took it upon themselves to change an air filter with yet again not calling to say we suggest you change this. The way they cursed out my wife and disrespected her, never ever would I recommend this shop again!! I had been warned about them a few years ago...should have listened to them!!!!!! read more
