First time here! I'm from Ohio and was looking for a good fish sandwich. I was not disappointed! The sandwich was large and the grilled bun made it even better! There were six of us. I just had a horrible experience with take out at SouthSide Tavern in Braintree. I placed a phone order for 2 dinners and went to pick it up and one of the items was made wrong. In an effort to make it correct, one of the items (a hamburger) was 'kept warm' for 30 minutes while the other item was remade. Needless to say, I voiced my concern about the burger being 'kept warm' for 30 minutes and I was told I could wait while another one was made. I was not about to wait another 20 minutes while a hamburger was remade. Not one penny of compensation was offered. When I took the food home the hamburger meal was cold and I literally live less than 1 1/2 miles from the restaurant. The final straw was I had to pay for the meal before I got it and I gave them a tip. I have eaten there several times but I will tell you I will never be back after having such a terrible experience. read more

Talk about a hidden gem! This place is awesome! Great appetizers (huge plate for a good prize) and awesome menu options. We both got something off the specials menu and swear it was the best meal we've ever had! The service was great and we didn't wait long for anything to come out on a rather busy night. I went for Sunday dinner with a friend who lives on the south shore and ordered steak tips with rice pilaf and broccoli. I have one word, yummy. Based on the atmosphere (sports bar feel), you wouldn't expect the food to be this good, but everyone at our table was satisfied with their meals. For desert, I tried the bananas foster and it was a large serving. It was on the sweeter side & there were a lot of little "fried dough balls" in it, but not a proportionate amount of ice cream. We live in Braintree close to the South Side Tavern and go here often. The food is affordable and very good. It isn't fair to say it's just pub food because it's a step above. From sandwiches, to their bar pizza to the burgers (Fireman Burger is great), I don't think I had a bad meal. Also some of their deserts (fried apple pie) are better than high end restaurants. Great craft beer selection. Service is friendly and fast. Huge TV's all around which makes this a great place to catch a game. Yes, it can get busy on game nights and the weekend but it isn't crazy. I came here last night for the first time and I was not disappointed! We sat in the bar at one of the high top tables. They had a good selection of seasonal beers. We ordered the pretzel sticks but they were unfortunately out so we ordered the cheesesteak egg rolls instead and they did not disappoint! Probably a better choice than the pretzel in the end. We had chicken Parm and chicken Marsala and the portion was huge! You'll definitely have leftovers. The menu is big and has a lot of great options and all the items are extremely reasonably priced. Fried pickles are to die for! But this place is more for a bar experience. My boyfriend and i are underage so we went for some apps and were told "your age is only allowed until (whatever time)" and we were there an hour before then, without knowing this rule. Update 4/17/12: Very classy & professional! After my initial, lukewarm review, the manager sent me a very nice e-mail through Yelp addressing my concerns. I am extremely impressed. If Southside is going to continue to be responsive to the concerns of patrons, this may work out well. The food was pretty good. A little on the pricy side, but the cheap drinks balanced that out. Service was interesting; the young lady who waited on me fell all over the two parties of gentlemen sitting at the bar to my right, but couldn't be bothered to refill my water glass without being asked (apparently there is still a stigma connected to being a woman eating alone). I would have rated the service there more highly, but when asked by one of the men at the bar - who was a regular at JJ Mulligan's - if any of the former staff is working there now, she replied, "Oh no. We didn't want to carry over any bad habits." A statement like that struck me as rather unwise since she had no idea who was listening and admitted that she never met any of the JJ's staff. On the other hand, she very kindly got me the WIFI password when I asked her. The rest of the bar staff seemed nice enough. One minor gripe: the walkway. Instead of being accessible from either side, it shoots off to the right. This is a minor quirk, but it still seemed a little weird. It felt like going all around the mulberry bush just to get in the front door. Overall, Southside lacks the warmth of the old establishment but the renovations are gorgeous, drinks were reasonably priced, and the food was okay. I would stop off there for a drink if I were in the neighborhood, but I won't rush back. If you are under 30 you are probably going to love the place. read more

Mixed review. The wings were good, but not as good as say the fat cat. The chicken panini was so bland and bad we had to ask for any kind of sauce for it. The food was good, the service was exceptional, the location is great 9right around the corner from the house), but the only thing that I was very, very unhappy with was the fact that they seated us right next to a section of the restaurant (basically inside the boundaries) that had been blocked off for a birthday party. We were served fast and we ended up eating relatively quick so that we wouldn't get caught in the middle of the party (we hadn't brought a gift - that's how close we were!) In fact, we finished just seconds before the birthday girl came in and we got up and went around to the bar side of the house to find the waitress and pay the bill. I have been there twice since it has opened. I like the TV's inside. Great for watching your favorite sports games. Haven't eaten the food yet, but people say it is good. Prices appear average. What I like about Southside is the selection of Beer, specifically belgian white beers. I can see myself Drinking a handful of Duvel or Hoegaarden Beers, eating appetizers at the bar with my wife while watching my favorite sports teams. What I don't like about Southside. TURN THE MUSIC DOWN!!!! NICE BOSE SYSTEM. I HAVE ONE MYSELF. I WANT TO WATCH AND MAYBE LISTEN TO THE GAME, TALK TO THE PERSON BESIDE ME OR ANSWER MY CELL PHONE, NONE OF WHICH I CAN DO WITH THE MUSIC BLASTING SOOOOOO LOUD! THE BASE GOES RIGHT THRU YOU. I GREW UP IN THE 70'S, SO I AM USED TO LOUD MUSIC. THIS IS OBNOXIOUS AND IRRITATING AND IS DRIVING PEOPLE OUT. Tipped off about this sports bar at our hotel. We were looking for a place to watch a play off game for the Pats. We were treated like one of the locals. Our server was attentive without hovering. The food was good and exactly as expected. It was such a nice experience I stopped to tell the manager what a wonderful experience we had....even though the Pats lost. Absolutely recommend this place to anyone and everyone! I went here two weeks ago with a friend, we were looking for a decent brunch where the mimosas would flow and we won and then some....I had the eggs benedict, being a bit adventures and never having tried eggs pouched before, I am a huge fan! The has was fantastic, the english muffin grilled just right and the homefries were fantastic. We went Sunday around 11:30am and it wasn't busy at all (probably because it was 80 outside already and everyone else was at the beach!) but it did start to fill up around noon and pretty quick. They had the full bar available, as well as their lunch menu for those who aren't a big fan of Sunday brunch. I plan to go back pretty regularly even though it is a 20+ minute drive from my house.....hope to see you there! read more

Came in on a busy evening, but still got quick and great service. The bartender we had (whos name i sadly forget) was fantastic, good drink, great service, fantastic attitude. the only thing i did not like was the pickle chips. they seemed to be too thin and cooked for too long with very little batter coating them. i would be willing to try them a second time though, with hopes they might be different. The place had a aroma of fresh fried fish, and i absolutely loved it, so much so that it got me to order the fish and chips. i will say the fish batter was just a touch over done, but it was still fantastic, just a tad bit crispier than i would personally like. over all a great place, will definately be returning often. read more

I can't get over how much this place has improved since it was Mulligans. Its the same on the outside pretty much but when you walk in you find a nice bar, with tons of TVs with all sorts of sporting events on. Tables are crowded together. I had to move the table just to sit and I'm an average sized woman. Two menus took up the whole table basic. As you can see nothing bad to say about the food or staff both great. The only negative is for people who like gravy. You can tell it is instant which kind of lowers the quality and taste of items you put it on. read more

I have been to Southside numerous times and have not been disapointed yet!!!! The food is always great and have a wide variety of different beers to choose from. With trivia on Tuesday nights and karaoke on Thursdays, there is always something going on to keep people interested...a far cry from the old JJ Mulligans!!!!! As for the wait and bar staff, I am impressed!!! Always friendly, attentive and quick to make sure you are enjoying yourself... have a few favorites in Danielle and Kristen.. Always smiling and bubbly, fast servers and doesn't hurt that they are both great looking girls!!!!
