I am pretty happy to have finally made it into this place! It has been there for years and for some reason I just have never been. I have now been here twice and I was shocked to see how busy they were on my second visit on Saturday night. I now understand why... The catfish is AWESOME! It is really some of the best I have ever had! The breading is unique in how in encapsulates the fish and kind of like steam/pressure cooks it. It is perfectly spiced and crunchy like it should be. I have had a few side dishes and I really liked the Onion Rings, the fries are Thick Steak Cut, Cole Slaw was on point, and although pre-battered frozen the Fried Okra was solid. The corn looked awful but was actually really good. Reason for only 4 stars... The Hush Puppies sucked! Boo! Why? It could have been love! The Shrimp is also pre-battered frozen... Only fair in taste/quality. Stick with the Catfish for a solid 5 star visit so far in my opinion. They do have some other interesting stuff like Whiting and Big Bone Buffalo (whatever that is). I'll get back with you on that...

I absolutely love Southwind Fish!! I come here about 3 times a month and have yet to be disappointed. They have the BEST catfish I have EVER had. The catfish nuggets are well seasoned and perfectly fried. The hush puppies are delicious and so is the potato salad. The restaurant is small but always clean. The staff is friendly. I suggest calling ahead if you are ordering during the lunch hours because it can get a bit busy.

    Fish way too salty.

The fish is fantastic. Warning--you may need a nap if you eat here for lunch. They give you plenty of food. Highly recommended.

You'll pay there and then be offered a table and your food will be brought to you. Your check includes a 15% service charge of course you can tip additionally with cash later if you wish. I've never heard of eating neckbones so of course that's what I ordered. The pork neckbones had been well braised and were super delicious. Truly an ultimate pork experience. You definitely have to pick them up and chew all over. But there's lots of meat. Some of it you can get to with a fork, and some of it can be broken apart for easier access to the meat, but it is not an elegant meal! I found the vinegar at the table really enhanced the flavor. My sides were black-eyed peas and turnip greens, and the greens were spectacular. The corn muffin was very good. The sweet tea was very sweet, but not nearly as sweet as the peach cobbler. The cobbler was delicious with lots of nutmeg, but people really have a sweet tooth in Memphis. I ate on a Sunday and got there just before noon to get in ahead of the after-church crowd and my timing was perfect. The dining room filled up while I was eating.

He chatted with us as we waited at our table for our orders. He served our orders and bused our plates too. He does everything and is very personable providing welcoming hospitality. And he's only worked there for a mere 5 weeks. I asked him who the owner is and he directed me to Jerry and Patrice Thompson, two of the nicest folks you'll ever meet. Jerry has a big welcoming personality and a great sense of humor. Fried catfish fillets were excellent! Crust was just right and the fillets were moist. I ate everything in my plate. Peach cobbler was warmed up, we opted to not have it w ice cream, and it is the best in Memphis! Such a long and storied history for this restaurant. We are so glad we came here and will return next time we are in Memphis. My only regret is we were too full to eat fried chicken too.

I ordered the lasagna with greens, mac and cheese, and cornbread, plus a peach cobbler for dessert. Overall, I really enjoyed the meal. The lasagna, greens, cornbread, and peach cobbler were all satisfying and flavorful. The only item that didn't work for me was the mac and cheese, which had a taste that didn't agree with me personally. I also ordered the "Holy Water" (blueberry lemonade). It was very good and refreshing, though super, super sweet!!! One thing that really stood out was the service. Everyone was super nice, welcoming, and courteous throughout the visit. The dining area of the restaurant is small and at the time of my visit, everyone was ordering to go. The restaurant decor features lots of pictures and spiritual references. I'm not sure if I've seen chitterlings and hog maws on a restaurant menu before. They offer them and I may come back and try them one day.

I also grabbed a piece of meatloaf to try and it was also good. Large portions and the food reminds you of home cooking, for dessert I grabbed the banana pudding, this was a different type of pudding that I'm used to, but it was fantastic, glad I found some good soul food in Memphis, Great Job
