Very solid food. Varied menu that tries to get fun and interesting. Good people and setting. Last night we had a great flounder with cheese grits and greens (the greens made the dish). Also the elk on risotto. All really good. Perhaps a bit less risotto as it buried the elk flavor a bit. Only downside was the crab dip with crostini. Great food Great Service Great Atmosphere!! We did see something occur that left us feeling embarrassed for 2 couples sitting next to us. They had finished their meal paid and 5 minutes after they paid the were very loudly and rudely asked to get up from their table immediately so other customers could have their table by the floor manager. It was very inappropriate behavior on behalf of the floor manager and not behavior you would anticipate in a fine dining establishment. read more

This place is simply amazing! I have only been here twice but both times the food was outstanding! On the last visit I had the beef tenderloin salad which was very tasty! You can get any cheese that you want on it. They have a decent craft beer selection with no crap on tap! When they found out that I am a Beer Judge the general manager let me sample all of the beers that they had on draft. SOUTHWOOD: Thanks for such a perfect dinner last night. From the easy online reservation, the ease of communication about preferences (which I gratefully acknowledge as being just what I asked for), and the service - all were just right. The bread was heavenly, herbed made in house with seasoned butter. Our cocktails were delightfully refreshing. We ordered different salads and enjoyed them both: local living lettuce with candied pecans, strawberries and blueberries; tomato and mozzarella slices with balsamic and garlic oil. We both make a habit of a lighter dinner than lunch, so we both opted for the appetizer: chile rellenos stuffed with crab. A fantastic choice! We both loved our choice! My husband forgot his cell and an attentive staff member delivered it to the car before we pulled out. Again, this was much appreciated! We arrived early and enjoyed the quiet setting. The volume picked up as the evening went on and more guests arrived. The only thing that could be improved is if there was a view with a setting on the water instead of an alleyway and the wall building next door. Maybe a mural of Mobile Bay covering the windows? Great variety of options! Unlike anything else on the gulf coast in my opinion! We had a burger, shoestring appetizers and cheesecake for dessert. The cheesecake was nothing special at all but the meat was cooked to perfection and the flavors were great on each plate. How have I never heard of this place before? The dinner selection included so many unique items that are not usually found in South Alabama. The squash blossoms, one of my favorite treats that I only ever get in other cities, were delicious. The elk tenderloin, which is also obviously quite unique, was incredible and the 16oz pork chop was the best pork chop my boyfriend said he'd ever had. We weren't prepared for what we encountered at Southwood Kitchen. We had passed many times and always saw the full parking lot. We have said time and again it must be good, but we had seen not the sign for Southwood Kitchen but the name of another business in the shopping center and thought it was a bar. We were in the mood for bar food. What we got was fine dining instead. Southwood Kitchen is in a wooden building with a shingled roof containing several other businesses. It has an entrance off the frontage road from the highway. It's not a big parking lot, but had ample parking. We walked in and were presented with a stylish setting with a full bar, booths, tables and at least one private dining area that we could see. We were happily greeted and seated as soon as we walked in. I asked for a beer they had run out of and I was brought a sample of another to see if I would possibly like that. That happens so rarely I can't tell you the last time I have service like that. We had the pimento cheese with fresh pork skins for an appetizer. Not as spicy as I would have liked it. But good. I had the amberjack tacos with mango salsa and avocado. It was good. What I was waiting for was the duck fat whipped mashed potatoes. But I was sadly very disappointed. The potatoes were bland and almost tasteless. I didn't have more than a few bites. I was hoping for something rich with an explosion of flavor. It was just mashed potatoes to me. With coffee our bill around $30. Again, service was great. The menu changes often and there is a different lunch and dinner menu. I like that. Presentation was spot on. It just didn't seem to be my day for flavor. The place really was nice and I'll venture here again. read more
