Did you know that based on the weight of your car, Space Mountain will either go faster or slower? That means if you're riding with a bunch of fat people, your car will be flying down the track. But what if your car is too heavy (too many churros???)? After you load, as they check your lap bars, they're also checking the weight of your car. If your car is heavier, they actually delay the launch so it doesn't get too close to the car in front of it on the track. Crazy, right? I digress. Long story short, this is the absolute best ride in the park. Unfortunately, even on slow days it can have a wait time of 60+ minutes. That means get here early, ride it early and get a fast pass early so you can ride it again later. This is especially critical on hot summer days (or hot fall days, like during this endless October heat wave). The majority of the line is outside on an open patio with little shade. The heat gets sweltering. Be warned. Once you make it to the inside queue (where the standby line meets up with the fast pass line), your wait time will only be a brief 10-15 minutes. It's cold, dark and air conditioned inside, which can be a welcome relief from the heat and sun. There's a height requirement to ride Space Mountain, so if you have any youngsters, speak with a cast member about a ride swap. They'll let one member of your party ride at a time, and you'll only have to wait in line once. Once you get to the front of the ride, I definitely recommend requesting the front. You might have to wait a second because the front gets popular, but it's worth it. The music is epic as you climb the first hill. The second hill distorts your senses as you go through a spinning tunnel of light. Once you reach the top of the third hill, the fun begins! Music blares as you speed down the track in pitch darkness, and all you can see is flashing stars and lasers. If you're night vision is super good, I recommend putting on a pair of sunglasses during the ride. Overall, it's an awesome trip through space. As they slam on the breaks at the very end, strike a pose. This is where they snap the picture! Best ride ever!!! read more

Being a former space mountain cast member(Disney lingo for employee) it was most definately fun working this attraction PRO's seeing all the celebs who'd come by and ride, good view of the firework show everyday, AC in the summer, controlling the ride from the tower position(the person you see behind the glass before making the ascend to the top of the ride YES we are real and NO we can't wave all the time! We got a ride to run) getting to ride a rocket during breaks CONS guest control when the ride is down I hated repeating the same phrases every 30 secs on why the ride is down, summer heat when working outside, teenagers who are smartasses, the exit position(dealing with cripples to get on the ride and right next to the bathroom), trying to explain to angry guardians on why your child can't ride because they don't reach the height requirments..it's a certain height for a reason SAFETY DAMNIT! Gotta mark one point off for the simple fact that you don't have Matterhorn style seats like they do in Disney World. That in itself makes the Florida version vastly superior. Oh, don't act like you, in your youth, used those lap seats with your best gal/guy and had a little sort of tunnel of love style of affection at the magic kingdom. No one can hear you scream in space, but they sure as hell can look at you through the night vision cameras be totally awkward to one another. Then another thing that bothers me about this one. Why the hell do they make you wait in that baron wasteland of the upstairs are outside of the ride? It seems as if you don't take the fast pass, you're stuck waiting in the sun before the last part of the line indoors. Then you have the interior. They haven't updated this space program for a loooooong time. In fact, with the last space shuttle launched not to long ago, they probably should just update all of Space Mountain to not exist anymore. I mean, we don't have much of a future space program, why have it in tomorrow land anymore? Is there a "yesterday ville" they could lump it in? As for the ride itself. Here's the tips to it. Ride in the front. The front is the best. Why? Well, for one thing you are going at full speed into the black and you can't see for shit. Which is the best aspect of it. You don't know if a low hanging pipe will cut your head off. The back of the ride will just see other people's heads and it sort of ruins the immersion if you can see other people. Not too spacey when you think about it. It's also really easy to get front seats. Just ask the person assign them. You may have to wait a ride or two, but it has a fast turn around so it's not going to really be that much of a wait anyway. They have changed the ride around in the past. Hell, there was one period when they would crank up the red hot chili peppers into the ride. That was a strange period. But they often do a sort of scary version of it during the holidays and it's got to be some sort of strange off shoot, cause it's a lot more brighter in there. Which again, you need to get as dark as you can to fully enjoy it. Over all, this is one of the best rides at Disney. You can't see shit, so you could probably fool your younger siblings or children to get on it and have them not be big babies about it. read more

I decided to go to the happiest place on earth Disneyland to go and cheer myself up. After battling with cancer for the last several years I felt I owed it to myself to have a fun day at Disneyland. Splash Mountain is one of my top favorite Disneyland rides. The infamous plunge, or drop, below ground level really gets my heart racing and the songs are über catchy. I've been on this ride a thousand times! And even though I know exactly when and where to look for the picture, my pose is never right! LOL I recommend going for the Fast Pass bc the line gets pretty crazy sometimes. However, later in the evening the lines are usually shorter. If you're going to ride Splash Mountain at night, be prepared with a jacket because it does get a little chilly, especially after getting splashed with water. My favorite seat on the log is in or near the front. Yeah, you'll get wet.. but that's the fun of it! I don't think I've ever made it off this ride dry. (I've seen some people use ponchos before... but those are hideous to me.) All in all, this ride is a blast. It's fun for (almost) the whole family.. By far my favorite ride at Disneyland usually the first and last ride during a day at the far too! Fast passes for the ride run out in the quickness, we rode it at hmmm.. I want to say 10am? and all the fast passes were gone the next time for passes if you got them at that time, were for 7pm. The wait I would say on the average would be an hour or a little over an hour. But this indoor coaster is awesome and super fast while you are in almost complete darkness. I was sad when they had it closed to redo it :( Most regulars on the ride know where the camera is and usually do something for the photo. If you don't know it's in the last tunnel right before the ride ends when there are a bunch of flashing lights. Like Eric N. noted Disneyland allows you to take pictures of your picture, I didn't think about the fact that other places don't allow this until I went back to Santa Cruz after a long time and they got pissed at me for doing so. An indoor, space-themed roller coaster ride built in the 70's... and it's still one of the most thrill-tastic rides in Disneyland! While you're blasting through space, there's background music imbedded into your seats, like California Screamin'. It's a bit slower though and it's completely dark inside with projections of stars all over the place. During Halloween, it turns into Ghost Galaxy and they project ghosts into the skies. Spoooooky... ALWAYS get a fastpass for this ride because lines are super long and you neeever know when it'll break down! Best time to ride this baby is late at night, anytime after the fireworks when most people are gone or the park is about to close. It's also a classic Photo Op ride (happens at the end) so don't forget to look cute while screaming your heads off! read more

Ask for the front.....It's the BEST! There have been times when the ride was over and my husband and I could have sworn that our cars had been outta control. But that doesn't stop us from getting a fast pass to do it all again...in front, of course. Since it was built in 1978 this has been my favorite DL ride, hands down. As Space Mountain with its original music, etc., this is an amazing experience, and I am not exactly a huge fan of roller coasters (with respect to other Disneyland rides, I love Thunder Mountain but won't do things like California Screamin'), but "Hyperspace Mountain" ruins much of the magic of the ride. Supposedly, and hopefully, it is just temporary whilst they build the new Star Wars area and we can't wait for this to turn back into plain ol' Space Mountain, hopefully just as it was before with the same wonderful music, etc. Yes, the "ride" is still the same in that it is the same dark roller coast, same fast ups and downs, etc., as Space Mountain. However, the new Star Wars sound effects and images just do not work or jive well with the ride, in contrast to the original music and stars, which lend a magical feel to it. Moreover, the Star Wars part, temporary or not, is just gratuitous and unnecessary. They already have Star Tours and are supposedly making new Star Wars attractions so there is no real point to this change, which eliminates some of the variety of the park. read more

(But the back you do get whipped around a little more, so if you want a little more crazy ride, ask for the back!) it's a pretty smooth track, with no upside down thingys, the ride is pitch black, with stars everywhere, you really feel alone in the ride! Get a fast pass because this is a poplar ride. Even that line was pretty long. But hey, you will be rewarded with outrageously bumpy and fun thrilling ride. The waiting area brings you through the "airport/launch bay". Have fun looking and hearing the android airport employees guide you along the way. Scenes of the metal detector scan, air traffic controller booth and my favorite was the wise cracking airport greeter android. His jokes are hilarious. Anyway, for the ride, get strapped in and throw on your 3D glasses. And off you go. Enjoy the ride. read more

WHAAAAAAAAA?!?!?! Look, let's start with Space Mountains history of being an indoor roller coaster in the dark with some crazy musical themes over the years. Just that alone begs an inquisitive thought of what will you experience during your next visit. But transform the ride into a Starwars themed XWing vs. TIE fighter battle with lasers and familiar quotes from the franchise as you whiz around space and dodge laser beams shooting at you definitely pushes this ride up a few notches. Add a near head-on collision with a TIE Fighter while shooting at each other will bring the largest smile to any fans face that won't be erased for some time. The only down-side of this staple ride in Tomorrowland besides the lengthy wait to hop into your X-Wing is that it is simply over too soon. read more

Why?!!! Why did Disneyland decide to incorporate Star Wars into this ride? This is a Disneyland classic and now it does not feel exciting at all. It feel like the other Star Wars ride that is here (Star Tours). This ride was great when it was dark. With all the Star Wars media this ride is way to bright and was not worth it for me. this is one of my all time favorite rides at disneyland and even better at night. sure most of the ride takes place inside but once your outside it's just so magical and kind scary at the same time. it did get a little less magical one year when i was in line and met screech from saved by the bell. he had a girl in each arm and was acting as cool as a cucumber. YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME! LOL all of the characters on this ride are so cute and cuddly. brer bear has always been a fave of mine so i gotta love the guy even though he is after brer rabbit. it seems that many of the characters on this attraction may even have been used on the old attraction, america sings. the drops on this ride are the best part for sure. the last two drops are very dangerous and you may get wet! you may even get totally soaked like i do. day or night no matter how wet i get it's always worth it for this ride. i love it! this last visit my mom had a motorized scooter to get around in because of a bum leg but it would pay off big time. this was one of the many rides we were able to go through the exit right to the ride. the cast members are so friendly and helpful it really comforted her to feel good in her situation. by the ride was over we were pretty wet. those last two drops get ya every time. when we got back the ride operator asked if we wanted to go again so without hesitation we did. what were we thinking? it was dark and my favorite time to ride so hell yeah! when we left splash mountain we were completely soaked. i was cool but it's mid december and cold so it got rough for mom and dad. it's a great ride in the hot summer but we careful during the holiday season for sure. who am i kidding? i loved it! read more

It used to be all about the cookie. The cookie still exists, I believe, but it's more difficult to see now, for some reason. When I was a child and still slightly terrified by this ride even though I knew from repeated experiences that it wasn't terrifying, I would push those fears away by looking for the cookie. From one track (the one that goes left?), I could spot it easily. From the other, it was more difficult. The music from right behind your head isn't as annoying as you'd think it would be. I am really upset, however, that they got rid of the ridiculous backlit photographs of galactic phenomena in the exit hallway. My late Uncle Eddie, who was an amazingly creative and kind person as well as an everything-space-related lover, would spend twenty minutes or so in that hallway pointing things out. The rest of my cousins and siblings would be running to get back in line, but I would wait, with my Cousin Greg, as Uncle Eddie explained everything. It also used to make me really sad for some reason when that restaurant just below the upper-level line area was closed. I think it's been reopened permanently now, but there was always something both encouraging and despair-inducing about having extra space. I always wanted things to be at full capacity, but that would also mean that Disneyland would be full, and that's really no fun. Honestly. If you're the least bit smart, you'll come on a gloomyish day in early-to-mid-March. Better yet, why not celebrate my birthday here? read more

I hate to give a bad review to one of my favorite childhood rides. When I was younger this WAS my ALL TIME FAVE. I felt like I was literally taking an exciting journey through space! I wouldn't care about the wait time, I was riding this ride the most out of all the rides in Disneyland. But on our recent trip, I had a different experience. I raved to my family how awesome this ride was. How cool it is to see "space" in real life... boy was I hyping this ride up for nothing. I don't know what happened. The ride must have changed along the years! It was nothing like the ride I remembered at all! I admit, my first visit was quite a long time ago, and I was a child then. But my second visit was in my older teen years so it couldn't have changed THAT much. Anyways, I sat next to my daughter and she is on the tiny side. So I made sure to tighten her bars extra tight to be safe. Little did I know that's what made part of her ride uncomfortable, that and all the twists and turns banging her head from side to side... I think that ride traumatized her, she felt her brain jiggle on that one lol. As for me, it felt like an epileptic's nightmare. Laser light shooting from every angle blinding any and everyone. I don't remember there being any sound effects or Music. I don't know what the heck that was, but it was surely disappointing to say the least. I completely regret wasting time in line and on the ride. Bring back the psychedelic planets and shooting stars. Play some sound effects or space themed music, for goodness sake. read more

now THIS is my favorite ride at disneyland! this ride is just a classic to me because i feel like its been here forever but its just one of those rides that you will always cherish because of the fact that its so historic. anywayz, this is an indoor roller coaster where u are basically completely in the dark. the only light that is provided on this ride comes from the stars that you see as you go through this ride. i personally LOVE the soundtrack that goes along with this ride. i actually am one of the few people that get really sad during halloween because i just love the original soundtrack for this ride that much. honestly, u just gotta go on this ride to know wat it's all about. the fact that you're in the dark is just great because of the fact that unless u know this ride like the back of your hand (like my friend does), u never know when the drops and turns will come. i will tell u this about the ride. at the end, u get your picture taken. the way u know when the picture is about to come is that toward the later half of the ride, ull notice that u make like 3-4 right turns in a row. and then it'll suddenly go left. like a second after that is when they take the picture so just be ready :-D read more

When I was little, I used to dread "Splash Mountain" (SM) because of the big, terrifying SPLASH at the end. I actually enjoy watching the singing critters and re-living the adventures of Brier Rabbit, Fox and Bear. However, I just always dreaded that awful climax (what most people actually look forward to) because I'm scared of heights and hate large drops ... and besides, you usually get wet on this ride, so I never like going on it at night (if I even am on this ride in the first place). Recently, though--and maybe it's because I went on (and survived) DCA's "Tower of Terror"--Splash Mountain doesn't seem so scary to me anymore. After dropping repeatedly on "Tower of Terror," one huge drop doesn't seem like it would be so bad (plus a series of smaller drops spread throughout the ride). I don't have a Disney AP anymore, but the next time I go to the "Happiest Place on Earth," if the whole group wants to go on "Splash," I won't be so opposed. I feel like wait times for this ride can be hit or miss, but you can expect a longer wait during the summer season. Not only is the Park more packed, but the fact that you usually do get wet on this ride is appealing when the weather's pretty hot outside. A few recommendations: Get Fast Passes: If you can see that the wait time for this ride is long (to me, long is anywhere after 45 minutes), I would get a Fast Pass and come back later. Avoid Riding at Night: If you don't mind getting wet when the sun goes down, the plus side is, the line for this ride is probably shorter at night (especially during the winter season, because no one wants to be even colder when the temperatures are already dropping outside). However, if you happen to get really soaked--and don't have an extra change of clothes--it might take a longer time to dry off. DO Ride During the Summer: This ride is similar to Grizzly River Run, in that it's a hot attraction during the summer because you actually welcome the fact that you get a little splashed. This can be a nice break from the summer heat and the sun's rays actually work to your advantage, since you can use the rest of the day to dry off. Enjoy the Singing: Some of my friends don't like Splash Mountain not for the drop, but because they don't like the singing creatures! I actually like the cheerful "Zip-ah-dee-do-da" tune and my favorite scene has to be at the very end (after you survive the drop) and see all the singing animals dressed up on the Mark Twain Riverboat. (Don't) Sit in the Front: From experience, it seems like the person sitting in the front of the log gets the most wet, so I've tried to avoid this spot like the plague. However, sometimes it's inevitable, and I've gotten pretty drenched on the few times I went on this ride. Once, I recall I went on this ride with a few friends pretty early in the morning, and I didn't recover (aka become completely dry) until mid-afternoon because it wasn't as hot and sunny that day. However, if you go on this ride early on a hot, summer day, you'll have no problem drying off ... so if you actually want to get wet, you know where to sit! read more

Amazing. Wonderful. Fabulous. My favorite ride at Disneyland, tied with Star Tours. Yes, the long line is a hassle, but you just can't help but smile while you're on this ride! The sharp twists and turns and slight ups and downs of this ride are so fun and thrilling! For the best experience, I recommend sitting in the front because then you cannot see anything in front of you. It makes the ride all the more fun while you're sailing through space! Sometimes you're the only one who can truly express how I feel. This was my second attraction when I worked here and let me tell you that this is one of the hardest rides to work. But undoubtedly one of the most fun at the same time. My favorite line that I used "looks like you found that laughing place all over your face!" Yes. I'm surprised I didn't get in trouble too. Anyways...here are some tips to shorten your wait for the Splashy ride shorter: - FASTPASS are good even after the end time. So come get your FastPass here first. BTW the motherfucking FastPass machines are over the goddamn bridge under the thorns on your left. Fuck. - Single Rider Line: go through the exit and you should get on within ten minutes - Switch Pass: if you have kids you can park your kid outside with someone else. Then switch off and the Switch Pass is the same as a FastPass for two people. - Height Requirements: trust me...it's there for a reason. but if your kid is too short, they can get a little pass so when they are tall enough it acts like a FastPass for six people...MAGIC people! One of the best rides in the park! I was able to go on this first thing in the morning and the line was much shorter than usual. It's very dark inside and it feels faster than it really is since you're not able to see the tracks and there are a lot of sharp turns and banks. It is absolutely dark inside with only the stars as your light. The space mountain is one of the most oldest and fun-est ride you will ever ride on for Disneyland. We waited about 2 and a half hour. The music that is playing while you are riding reminds me of the movies too. Same music from the 70s. I guess it is campy. Probably done on purpose. I do like that everything is dark. Riding a roller coster in total darkness. It was weird, i was looking up Space Mountain on google trying to remember the Disney's Witch Mountain movies and see that two people have actually died from riding this ride. Of course, both of them had heart problems. So, ride the ride. But if you have heart problems avoid it. Matter of fact... don't ride any of the super fast rides. Small World is more your speed. I'd give this ride five stars... if it weren't for the fact that it always seems to be breaking down. I suggest getting a FastPass for this ride, to avoid chances of waiting in line for an hour, and having it break down right when you're at the front of the line (that WOULD happen, with my luck). During my recent visit, I returned during my FastPass time range, only to find the ride broken down. The staff let us know that we could come back anytime in the night (when the ride was properly operating) and they would honor the FastPass. Love this ride... it's fun because you can't see the track at all, so you don't know which direction your next turn is headed. :) read more

***THIS RIDE TAKES YOUR PICTURE*** I love this ride!!! If you're a Star Wars fan then it's everything you want it to be. This is the best of all of the versions they have done with Space Mountain. When they added lights and played "Higher Ground" by RHCP it was great and then the alien they add during Halloween is also really cool, but this adaptation is the most appropriate I think. I've ridden it four times before the movie release and I'm glad I did because it will probably be nearly impossible to ride it without waiting in a really long line now that the movie has been released unless you show up really early to get fast passes. At 12:30 the day before the premier the fast passes were all gone and the line was 100 minutes long. When you get on the ride you have to ask to sit in the front row in order to get the full experience. I sat in row six and row four just to see if it could be enjoyable anywhere you sat, but unfortunately that's not the case. People tend to get really excited for the ride and have their hands up the whole time which blocks your view. This wouldn't be a problem during the regular space mountain ride because there's nothing to see, but this version has a lot of visuals. ***SPOILERS*** While you're waiting in line Admiral Ackbar gives you a mission to find out what's going on with a Star Destroyer near the planet Jakku. During the first part of the ride you go into light speed to your destination and at the top of the climb you come out of light speed and into an active combat zone and see several Tie Fighters fly by. When you turn the first corner you see the Star Destroyer with a few Tie Fighters near it and Ackbar says his classic line "It's a trap!!" The rest of the ride has you flying with X-Wings and blowing up Tie Fighters. It feels like you're whizzing through space and there are lasers flying toward you and lasers flying away from you as if your's shooting from your own craft. After taking out the Tie Fighters you and the other X-Wings perform a combined attack on the Star Destroyer and blow it up. Ackbar tells you that you've done good and tells you to come back to base. Great ride on a warm day. Leave cameras and anything else you don't want to get wet outside with someone! This ride has just the right amount of action: it's thrilling, but I never worry that I'm in danger. This is one of the few places where you can encounter any of the wonderful songs and characters from Song from the South, an award-winning picture that's every bit as much fun now as it was when it was released in 1946. Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, Zip-a-dee-ay, My, oh, my, what would Uncle Remus say? Ain't no mo' Brer Rabbit, Ain't no mo' Tar Bay-bay. Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, whitewashed away! I own a copy of "Song of the South" (DVD bootlegs are readily available, and their purveyors are not pursued by Disney's lawyers). There is nothing racist about it. Yet Disney won't re-release it--why? Probably because a certain class of non-minority ideologues will raise a ruckus over what they would call, but isn't, racism. Quite the contrary, the way blacks are portrayed is sympathetic, with them in important roles. At the same time, it reflects the facts of the American South in the mid-19th century. I guess if you can't change the facts, you gotta obfuscate or eliminate 'em. So what's this got to do with the ride? There are some memorable and charming characters and stories in the "Song of the South." The Uncle Remus stories that the movie is based on are a part of the history of the America, and contain valuable lessons for children. It's a shame that this classic movie, with some of the best music Disney has ever released, is fading from the public eye. Splash Mountain is one of the few places where a tiny, tiny corner of "Song of the South" remains. P.S.: As the pictures show, there's an automatic camera here. If you really, really have to, you can do an on-line search for photos that Disney has to throw away because someone has been naughty. A product of the 1970's Space Age, Space Mountain definitely embodies the spirit of Tomorrowland. This is the most famous Disneyland ride and rightfully so. It really puts you into a rocket as your fly and curve through the stars. Of course, there is one big well known drawback to Space Mountain. Since the ride is so good, everyone wants to take it so the line is backed up for an hour. Then at 2:00 when you want a fast pass, it says you have to wait seven hours for it to work. So how exactly should you get on Space Mountain quickly? What I did was that I got here early and went straight to Space Mountain before the crowds really got here. Of course there was still a line because other people had the same idea I did but it was empty compared to the lines you see in the afternoon. There was still a line but it was only ten minutes long. I got into my seats fine and then the ride began. We started blasting off (also known as going up) and instead of crash landing, we just flew around, curving through space as the stars flew past us. This was a product of the 70's Space Age and it was really fantastic. Overall, it is a great exhilarating experience if you can avoid the line. My only quibble is that the ride ended too quickly. read more

Hyperspace Mountain is always one of my stops at Disneyland. Not only is it a nice reprieve from the hot sun with its well air conditioned setting, it's also just an overall fun mini rollercoaster ride. With its updated Star Wars visuals, Disney made a ride go from great to even greater! read more
