COVID review: great, chill little spot. I come here a lot, I like their smoothies and açaí bowls. The sandwiches and kombucha are a fave lunch, also. Picked up an açaí bowl with peanut butter and Goji berries. I will admit that swamis downtown has bigger, better, and better price point açaí bowls, but @spacebar is much closer to my house, and I don't have to find or pay for parking like in downtown la mesa. I think they also used to have music and open mic nights in the before-times. I'm sure that will resume when the time is appropriate. Today my boyfriend and I went in to Sp@cebar for a little lunch before work at 3, I want to say we walked in at about 2:05. The first off-setting moment was when the Calamari Fried we bought were listed for $10.25... and we were charged $14. Okay, no biggie, it must be a bigger serving size then. Then we sat around for about 20 minutes waiting for our food, my boyfriend had ordered something separate. When 2:30 rolled around I was starting to get super anxious, now annoyed but trying to stay sweet and polite, I asked the cashier if they minded boxing it to go so we can leave as soon as it was out. The staff kind of all gave each other a look, but shrugged it off and said sure. Let me sidebar for a second, I've done food service for years. I absolutely know how annoying it could be for someone to do this, that's why I tried to be very kind about it and said many thank you's... after about 5-8 more minutes we were handed our food. Yay! Once again, big thank you's as we walked out... This is the "Calamari Fries" we paid $14 for. Huge bummer moment, I've been eating here since high school and know for a fact that the serving size used to be larger, (and cheaper!) The food was good, my boyfriend was happy with the loaded fries he got, but absolutely not worth $14 for the Calamari. Hopefully better luck next time! read more

This is a great place that I've driven past countless times and finally stopped in a few months ago. I can't understand why I hadn't discovered it sooner! It is an Internet cafe that has quite a few things to munch on as well as great coffee, smoothies, and even beer. Friendly customer service too. The only coffee they have is Cafe Moto- of course this is awesome! Usually it is either Blue Sky or Colombian. But they do change periodically. They also sell whole bean to go in 12oz packages. They have delicious sandwiches as far as the ones I've tried- pesto chicken, veggie panini and the club panini. We've also had the Parmesan fries, cooked and dusted perfectly. I think they always have Bud Light & Stone IPA on tap and Kombucha too. It is a mellow, quiet spot to study, have a snack, a coffee or write reviews...! It has made my rotation of spots in my area so you can bet I'll be trying more from here for sure! read more

Came here due to dietary restrictions. My boyfriend wanted subway so we figured I could eat here and he could just grab a sub. However, despite the cafe being almost empty and me being a paying customer, they would not let us both eat together inside. The reason we were given was that teens come in and take up tables and eat other food. I understand that however we are both adults and I did order two food items from them and tipped. The owner/management was the one who said this. The server was very sweet. Food wasn't even worth it. Will not be ordering here again. Update based on reply from owner: Subway's salt and pepper seasoning is more flavorful than the absolutely bland "seasoning" the Parmesan fries had. They have every reason to worry about the literal 2 customers there getting the wrong impression since they have terrible food. P.s. having worked in many restaurants it's completely common place for one person in a party to have food from somewhere else due to taste differences, dietary restrictions, etc. If higher class restaurants can allow it without issue then it seems silly that a "smoothie cafe" can not. read more

I was looking for a place to have lunch. This place caught my attention. I personally liked the vibe when I came in here and food was pretty good. The downfall I have with this place was that the gentlemen who took my order also was making my food did not wear gloves the entire time. Especially with everything going on that should be a must especially handling food and touching the iPad to place the order along with the doors to take the orders to the customers outside. First visit. Good morning! Time for another açaí bowl. I liked it. There are add-on options, but I wanted to kick the tires and see how the base model looked. A nice bowl of refreshment, topped with crunchy granola, and arranged pieces of banana and strawberry. I really liked the granola portions. Decent price, but the smoothie was a bit soupy and stingy (maybe 1/3 of a banana & one strawberry, sliced) on the fruit compared to nearby cafés. I might check out a pitaya bowl sometime. Nice, open space, with available outlets for your electronic devices. Yes, there are desktop computers available, but everyone that I saw this morning had their own laptop or tablet. Other notables: There are a outdoor tables and more seating options inside, including at the front countertop. In addition to the coffees, teas, and smoothies, there are kitchen items on the menu for brekky & lunches. Free wi-fi too. It's a clean, relaxing spot to study, work, hang out, and/or enjoy snacks. read more

What a great experience I had here. I walked in and up to the counter where a very pleasant lady greeted me. I wasn't sure about what I wanted so she politely gave me time to review the menu. There was a lot to choose from: salads, Panini sandwiches, bagel sandwiches, smoothies, coffee and tea, breakfast dishes, various appetizers, beer, wine and more. Because it was early morning I ordered the BLT Bagel. The wheat bagel was lightly toasted with bacon, lettuce and tomato, and the mayo and a slice of pickle was on the side. It was a tasty sandwich just enough to start my morning. The great experience I had here was the fact that it was "good karma" day. It just so happened that a random customer left a courtesy gift card for the restaurant to use for all customers orders that morning. So my tasty BLT Bagel was free, but my responsibility was to pass on the "good karma". So I shared my sandwich with my husband. I hope that counts? The atmosphere was welcoming with a spacious floor plan. The restaurant is not fancy but has a lot of character. I like the way it is set up with cozy seating areas to break up the room into different sections, nicely done. They also have a stage platform for the comedy shows they do throughout the month. read more

This coffee shop was definitely not what I expected. I walked in and the atmosphere was kind of all over the place. I figured out it was called the space bar because there were people on laptops and doing work in there and it seemed all futuristic and tech vibe. For somewhere that's makes it seem like a studying type of space, I'd think it would have a good study-like atmosphere. There was really loud music playing, a wine bar where you go to order, and futuristic furniture in another part of the cafe. I went up to the counter to order and couldn't find a coffee menu ( I thought it was primarily a coffee shop.) All I saw was a wine menu and food menu. There was no worker in sight, but after 3-5 minutes of waiting at the counter, someone came out from the back and then grabbed another person to take my order. Since I didn't find coffee on the menu I figured I would just order what I'd typically get at a coffee shop, so I got an iced vanilla latte. The drink I got didn't look like a latte (it was very dark and I didn't order extra shots of espresso or anything) but I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt. It tasted like a drip coffee; not at all like a latte and it overall just had a weird flavor. I went a few blocks down and got another latte and reinforced my thought of what a latte should look and taste like. Overall I didn't have a great experience and am very disappointed to be writing my first negative review. read more

I've come here twice. It's a cute neighborhood cafe/bar with coffee, smoothies, beer/wine and assorted food. They also have events there: open mic, etc. Plenty of seating. Parking is limited, but I've never had to search for one. I've tried their cheese board, it was delightful. The wine selection is decent, as well as their beer. Today I tried their acai bowl, because I had a hankering for one and was sorely disappointed. It had the typical banana, strawberry, granola and drizzle of honey toppings, but the acai was meh. I should've asked what they blend it with, if anything at all. It wasn't sweet, mainly tart, maybe it was cut with juice of some sort? Could be a taste preference, but I like my acai creamy. Sadly, I only ate about 1/2 of the toppings and 1/4 of the acai. I'll be back again, but probably not for the acai. read more

This coffee shop reminds me of a neglected dive bar where the decor is slapped together and the only one person working behind the counter. My espresso came out quick but my açaí bowl took 20 minutes so either call ahead or don't come hungry if your trying to grab a bite. The espresso could have been a bit warmer but the blend was very smooth and the pour was on point. Served in a demi mug and plenty of bubbly water to choose from I indeed enjoyed my shots. I ordered a chicken and spinach panini sandwich, a spice chai latte with a glass of water. I wished I didn't order that drink. It leave such a nasty taste in my mouth. The waitress has forgotten my water. One sip of that chai was enough, and the sandwich was a joke. Other then a large slice of lettuce and a very thin slice of chicken meat, and few leaves of Spinach, an a spread of pesto on the sourdough bread. Maybe its just me, but one bite into that sandwich out came that large piece of lettuce. Hell, I can make better sandwich than this. When I asked the waitress of the Internet password was, she tell me it is "nothing special". Well there you have it, it speak for itself. The food and all was nothing special, I won't be returning here ever again. The patrons that do frequent here are a mixture of seniors and college kids. Tried the Acai bowl here... Not impressed at all. Acai was watery and bitter. Unfortunately, it was probably the worst I've tasted. Service was mediocre... Had to wait over 20 minutes for it. I would say some people might like to hang out here. I tried another time in case they were just having a bad day the first time... Pretty much the same experience. This place is like a little hole in the wall, I did not expect it to be this good LOL. The environment inside was quiet, study-like ambience but the outside seating was also really clean and beautiful. The employees there were really nice and very pleasant. They made me feel welcome, they offered lots of options, didn't make me feel rushed. They brought out the food in a very well organized matter, and asked if we needed anything else. They brought us plenty of napkins and offered a booster seat in the outside seating. This service is the one thing that makes me want to come back aside from how good the food was. We had the Panini's and they were insanely good. The bread was yummy and crispy (typing this out is making my mouth water ). The Açaí was yummy too. A++ In order of importance to me: 1) Staff: The staff are all very professional but make you feel at home. From the moment I met Jazz, she led me through the story of this gem in La Mesa. Living in Louisiana for part of my life has made me feel I'm missing something while in CA, as the cold-shouldered attitude of seemingly every transplanted resident created a longing for the future outside of this state. "Nothing's warm besides the weather". But her, Christa, and the owner Frank were all so nice and really genuine. If only every coffee shop in San Diego were as high quality as Spacebar Cafe, Europeans would be vacationing for coffee here! 2) Cleanliness: The whole inside and outside patio is spotless, but approachable if you want to meet a friend or colleague, do some computer work, write a love letter, or grab a coffee, smoothie, glass of vino, or a good craft beer like Ballast Point Sculpin! 3) Peace: So relaxing to have a spot that isn't so busy it feels like the cool atmosphere from The Big Easy has flown West to the Pacific. I hate to risk revealing one of the best places in San Diego, but they deserve to be known. I've worked as a bartender at George's at the Cove, Mortons Steakhouse, and Randy Jones Sports Grill in Mission Valley, and this place is up to par with all of them. 4) Coffee: they use Cafe Moto and I prefer drip coffee, so I can't tell you anything about their hand crafted beverages. But the Moto drip coffee with a splash of creamer made by the wonderful Barista Jazz is perfect for getting me through the day. 5) Music: Due to COVID-19, they can't have live music, but I await the day I can walk down and watch people play. And play myself!!!! I play music so this is going to be somewhere I'll make my breakthrough and bring my music to everyone here. Please good people in San Diego and people visiting, come here! 6) Protection: All of the staff uses proper facemasks and people coming in are all instructed to wear facemasks while walking around, not while relaxing with friends.
