I posted this on Friday but it's miraculously disappeared. Spartan is, out of 40 years of homeownership, by far the worst one I ever worked with. All of the negative things other reviews mentioned are true, and then some. I won't even get into all of it because I will probably just keep posting this as it may mysteriously disappear again. Let me just say: they don't know what they're doing. I needed a sewer line blockage removed; they suggested replacing the entire sewer line to street. I could see it was corroded but as I saw the lack of progress and hopelessness of ability, I told them just fix the blockage in one pipe and that's it. (I leave aside the first 2 guys jackhammered in the wrong place to begin with. They work 4 hour days, including a break and lunch and arrive anywhere from 9:30 to !0:30 or 11. After, the basement was a disaster; they didn't clean up the sewage around the drain, sort of mopped the floor, ruining the mop, but because they'd left all the debris over the weekend the floor was quickly filthy again. And, the simple thing unclogging the line out of the laundry tub wasn't done, though they told me it was. Bossman called me in the afternoon after they'd been here 3 days (around 12 hours total) to tell me they were going to charge me for part of what they didn't do "because I changed my mind." I protested and he literally shouted and shouted and shouted until I simply hung up. As I said in the disappeared review: stay away. There are good plumbers out there. "Spartan" is not even close. I am writing this review after our 3rd canceled appointment. We have a leak, had them come out and diagnose the problem. After the initial appointment they scheduled the repair. Then ghosted us. Then we rescheduled, then they ghosted a 2nd time. So I called and confirmed a time when they could finish the job, but again, they cant make it. We paid: 08/29/2024 SPARTAN PLUMBING HEATIBRENTWOOD MD USA $444.00 for holes in the drywall, no fix, scheduling hassles, and it's still leaking causing damage. I will request a refund read more

Spartan is a reliable company and always been on time with me and all my plumbing needs. After reading some reviews especially the most recent. It appears that some people are unreasonable and use the threat of reviews to try and get there way. There was value and integrity with the office and management. I will continue to call soartan as long as I have plumbing or HVAC issues. read more

I chose Spartan for my HVAC maintenance today, big mistake. I was quoted one price on the phone before the service and double that price once the service 2 was completed. Oh no one told you plus labor charges. No one did!! and I disappointed by the lack of professionalism this company displayed. Then I'm told by the technician that if I had a maintenance agreement the price is 65% less. This is terrible customer service. Thank you Zac for great service and honesty. read more

Because of Spartan I consider myself out $12,000! Please don't be fooled by what I consider a completely misleading Better Business Bureau rating. I originally hired Spartan to do some work on a sewer line. The Spartan employee, wearing Spartan uniform and driving in a Spartan van, tricked me into paying an additional $12,000 directly to him for work that didn't need to be done - I had no way of knowing he wasn't doing this through Spartan. When I told Spartan about what their employee had done, they terminated their employee - in my opinion recognizing that something was deeply wrong - but they were hypocritical and refused to make it right. In fact, they told me a lawyer was advising them on this case. I submitted a complaint with the Better Business Bureau - simply asking for an apology - nothing else. And they never responded. So, I wold really avoid them like the plague. They're also incredibly rude and I found misleading. At the end, the people on the line even refused to discuss what had happened. Shocking! read more

I was experiencing a sewer backup in the home. when I flushed my toilet it would back up into my stationary tub in the basement and flood my basement with sewer. The company came out and charged me $850 to remove the toilet and snake it out. The plumber assured me the issue was corrected. I paid with my credit card. But less than an hour after he left, the issue returned worst than before. not only was the toilet backing up again in the basement stationary tub when flushed , but whenever water was run in kitchen sink, shower, bathroom washbowls, the downstairs toilet would fill up and over flow. this is in addition to sewer from toilet also backing up in stationary tub. I called the company and told them I wanted them back out here to fix the issue they claim was corrected and fix the new issues they appeared to cause. I informed them that I put a HOLD not a stop payment on my credit card until I receive what I paid for. They promised me they would come back out and correct the issue. Today, 12/31, the company called me and stated I must pay the initial $850 because they is no guarantee on snaking a drain. They said once I pay they will come back out and see what is wrong. I have no problem paying them once I receive the service. they did not unclog the drain and in fact made the issue worst with the snaking they did. This company initially told me they had a 30 day guarantee on their work, now they claim there is no guarantee. In addition to this, although I paid out of pocket, I was to get reimbursed from my home warranty company as long as Spartan called my warranty company and gave their license, insurance diagnosis and cost. I explained this to the company before I authorized them to work and they agreed to contact my warranty company on the next business day (since they came out on a Saturday). But now the company is saying they will not contact the warranty company. I feel I was not only deceived but I also feel the company took advantage of me because of my sex and age and the fact that I was desperate to stop the sewer backup ruining my basement. They promised everything just so I could authorize the work and pay them, but they did not deliver on the services I paid for. If they had properly snaked the drain and unclogged the stoppage, then it would not have reoccurred less than an hour after the plumber left my house and received payment. Don't trust this company they are frauds. Also DC water and sewer stated they should report the sewer issue to them and they refuse to do this read more

I have been using Spartan Plumbing for several years. I have found Spartan to be an extraordinary professional and customer-friendly company. They are always prompt and reliable and willing to do whatever it takes to insure the job is completed satisfactorily. I especially want to commend one the the technicians, Edgar. He has not only resolved any HVAC problems I have had but he goes out of his way to explain what steps I should take to prevent future problems. I made the mistake of yanking on a wire to my exterior AC unit today while trying to clear away the vines around it (the wire looked *just* like one of the vines, dammit). No big deal, except 1) today is Sunday, 2) the temps are already in the mid-90s today, and 3) a heat wave is on its way during the next few days. We called Spartan since they have a 24-hour emergency answering service. I explained the situation and hoped out loud that we could get someone out to look at it as early as tomorrow. The tech called back before I could get all the way through my worst case scenario spiral of thinking to let me know he was close by and could fix it today. He arrived 10 minutes later, and within 20 minutes had the unit fixed and running again. That was one huge relief; the other was that it cost me less than $100. No emergency or same-day fee, just the cost of parts and labor. Amazing. I was very impressed with the prompt response and quick turnaround time, and I'm happy to support a woman-owned and managed business. read more

Let the buyer beware! I called for an Spartan to install connect the main gasline to the gas meter. The lady at Spartan said the rate was $89 for the inspection/initial work and $89 for each additional 1/2 hour after that. I left work early to meet the plumber, when he arrived I explained that I just needed him to make 1 simple connection, but because I am not a plumber I can't do it myself. The job should have taken 5min to install. He calls someone at Spartan and tells them I have "homeflex" gasline (the most commonly sold gasline at Home Depot and Lowe's), then proceeds to tell the guy on the phone that the job would take 2.5 hours at $195 per hour. His explanation to me was he had to find the right connectors because this is "dangerous stuff". So, an $89, or $180 job (if he takes 30min to check for leaks) turns into $500. It still would have taken him 5min to connect. So I declined his services and called the company to get an explanation. The company said it was a 1 hour minimum at $195, plus any parts, and he would also test the lines when he finished the connection. I almost had him come back, but couldn't get past the initial bait and switch on the $89 to $500 fee change in cost. I wouldn't call this company back again if my bathrooms were shooting poop from shower faucets. Getting pooped on once in a day is enough for me! After reading Spartans response and speaking again to Washington Gas, I thought I'd post a photo of what washington gas asked me to get the plumber to do. Connect the main gas line to the gas meter. Washington Gas has already capped the gas coming from the street to the meter to prevent any inherent gas leaks, I showed the plumber that all gas valves were closed, and the gas lines have passed inspection for leaks. I still had no issues with them inspecting the lines again, but the quote for 2.5 hours was ludicrous. And being voted best plumber in DC with a Yelp 2 Star rating says more about your industry than it says about your company. read more

So after the response from them I had to update my review. 1 - The part's serial number was the same, not off by two digits, so literally the exact same part. Not a "dumbed down" version. Exactly the same. 2 - I had you do the work because my furnace wasn't working, it was 40 degrees out, and my 2 kids kinda needed the heat on. Had I been able to wait the 48 hours for the part the arrive I would have. 3 - Your boss also told me that if I changed my mind on the part I would be charged a 'restocking fee' on the part that was almost half the price of the part. 4 - Your staff's incredibly rude behavior belies your many years in business. read more

I am extremely impressed with this company! I had a different plumber come out to my historic home and tell me my pipes were old and I may have to take out walls, etc. to fix a back up with my kitchen sink and the powder room sink on the adjacent wall sharing a pipe I was freaking out... then I called Spartan and talked to Tim who has the upmost of faith in his guys and he convinced me that Marvin was the man for the job. Marvin and Marvin JR came out to my house and knew exactly what to do.. they went straight for the vent pipe on the roof!!! They used 42 ft of snake and fixed the issue in no time! Literally, they were finished in under an hour! This company is very professional and these guys know what hey are doing! I truely think they saved me so much money by knowing their stuff.. We have used Spartan a few times now. They come usually within 24 hours often quicker. They have been able to quickly fix our A/C unit and gotten us back running. They do charge an upfront $89 fo the first half an hour and then additional labor or pets as needed. The staff is always helpful and nice. Are they the cheapest? No but they get the job done well and quickly. I would recommend them. read more

My AC died on the hottest day of the year. I called Spartan having had good service from them before on a sewer line repair, I thought I'd try their AC services. Edgar from Spartan came out and diagnosed the AC problem quickly. The fan motor had died to the external unit. He tried to save me money by suggesting I check the warranty on the part. It turned out not to be under warranty. He was able to secure a motor the next day, a Saturday, and get it quickly installed. He also informed me in a kind, non-mainsplainy way of some other maintenance items I can do myself that will make things last longer. If things break again, I'll definitely call back. I'm very happy with Edgar's service from Spartan and happy to be in a house that is now cooling down again. Thank you! read more

Disappointing lack of service or professionalism... Based on an Internet search, I called Spartan on a Saturday afternoon for an emergency repair for a shower which had hot water gushing into the tub. When the Spartan technician returned my call, I explained the problem and he said he did not know if he could repair the problem. When the tech arrived, he did not bring any tools into the house, but went immediately to look at the problem in the bathroom, then the hot water heater and the water main into the house. He then informed me he didn't bring ANY plumbing tools, that he couldn't do anything other than schedule me for a repair visit in three days on the following Tuesday, and that he would charge me for the house call...! He showed up not thinking, but KNOWING, he could not make ANY repairs, because he didn't have any tools with him..! I promptly sent the tech on his way, unpaid, as he showed up without any intention or ability to effect repairs, and I believe he only came out to collect a house-call fee. I immediately called the dispatch to explain; I requested a call from a manager at the earliest opportunity. No one called to discuss this problem. Three weeks later, I receive a call from Spartan, asking me for personal information so they can send me the "invoice." I explained to the caller that the tech showed up without the ability or intent to effect repairs, and the caller put me on hold, returned only to say "thank-you", and hung up without another word. I am suspicious of the technician's unpreparedness and motives, and disappointed in the Spartan's lack of proactive response to my request for a call from their management. I am especially disturbed by their attempt to bill me for a house call when the technician had neither the intention nor the ability to make the emergency repair. (It turned out to be a fairly simple repair job for a competent and properly-equipped plumber.) I do NOT recommend Spartan, and discourage my fellow home-owners from contacting them. read more

Horrible service! We hired them for 2 jobs and they never called us to say it was completed. I called the office and the woman that answered kept saying to call back next week for payment. How am I supposed to send payment if I have no confirmation of what was completed? Also I asked to speak with a manager multiple times and her response was to call back tomorrow or Monday. Let me first start by giving big props to Chris McKenney who came out and really did an outstanding job. He was very understanding, thorough, professional, and knowledgeable. I had an issue with my cartridge that got stuck and broke apart and had to replace pipes and whatnot. Now to the bad. I found the front office unprofessional and didn't communicate well regarding schedules. I found the front office untrustworthy, it made me feel a little uneasy with using them. A lot of companies upon answering a call for service indicate that "this call may be recorded for quality assurance and training purposes." Spartan needs to record its calls. This would help management understand how its office staff interacts with the public and therefore offer its staff training to make that interaction professional. It would also help to ensure that information agreed on with Spartan regarding the scheduled appointment is recorded accurately. That would ensure that Spartan has the correct phone number for the customer and the correct appointment window. Also, having a 6 hour window for a service call is not competitive when there are other area plumbing contractors that offer a 2-hour window with same day service and more competitive pricing. read more

Spartan was great. Came out next day and found the issue quickly with my furnace. Also changed my thermostat. Very friendly and helpful.

I came home late from work to find water soaking the carpet in my basement. I realized that anytime I used my kitchen sink, my clothes washer drain in the basement was spitting out water. I cold-called Spartan after Googling emergency plumbers in the DC area. The answering service took some basic information and said the plumber on-call would contact me soon. Within 10 minutes, the plumber on-call called, asked whether the water backed up when I flushed my toilet and explained that they charge $195 per hour for unclogging smaller lines and $295 per hour for larger lines. I told him nothing happened overflowed in the basement when I flushed the toilet. He said it sounded like a smaller line and would probably be the $195 rate. I asked how long it would take and he said probably not more than 20 minutes and that they could be at my house in a half hour. In just under a half hour the two plumbers knocked on the front door. They were quick and professional. They had to cut through a pipe, clean it out and put a cuff on the pipe. Before doing the work, they explained what they were going to do and told me that the cuff would cost an extra $15. All in all, it took about a half hour. When they were done, they told me what seemed to cause the problem (lint), how to fix it (get a tub by the washer and install a trap on the drain line), and that they'd come back for free one time in the next 30 days if there's a problem with their fix. They charged me for 1 hour of labor at $195/hour and $15 for the cuff. Then they were gone and my plumbing is fixed! If I could, I'd deduct a quarter of a star because they didn't tell me that they'd charge me for a full hour if their work took less than an hour. But to be honest, I'm so thrilled with their quick response, professionalism, and high-but-not-outrageous prices, that I can't really hold this against them. Spartan plumbing is a bit of a con job. The con is that they take you for the service fee, and will quote an exorbitant price for the repair. If you accept the repair price, they have many options for completing the work, as the profit margin is so high (due to the ignorance of the customer being ripped off) that they can basically afford to sub the work out to someone who knows what to do, getting paid as the middleman. If you read the other reviews you will notice that incorrect (and expensive) diagnoses are standard operating procedure for this company, which is often the result of inexperienced technicians. These technicians are inexperienced because they do no work. They simply pile up $90 show-up fees, and never develop their craft. I believe the technical term is "bottom feeders". FYI this business model is also common among appliance repair companies. read more

After making several emergency calls to have a technician to came to assist me, no one called back to schedule a time. Each time that a call was made they would tell me that Sorry for your inconvenience. Its unbelievable that this company was voted to be the BEST company for 4years. They should be voted for the company that promise faulty promises for 24/7 emergency. I recently called to get an estimate to have a drain installed in my front sidewalk due to drainage issues. A couple of days after I called, the plumbing supervisor stopped by and told me what they needed to do. He said he would have stop by one more time to check the depth of the lines they would need to connect to. He was supposed to come by within a couple of days. When we got to the end of the following week and I hadn't heard from him I called and he said that he had been busy and would be out the next Monday. Today, Thursday, I called to check on when he would be out and he informed me that they couldn't do the work because it would require cement work after the pipes were connected and they were plumbers and couldn't do that. Then why didn't you tell me at the first visit? I've now endured another 3 weeks of problems for no good reason. I should have dumped them several years when they couldn't properly vent a new dryer. This time is it. No third chance. You're not the only plumbers. read more

Unprofessional and disorganized. I called to make an appointment to have my AC issues resolved. I spoke to numerous people in the office. I spoke to a young man that stuttered extremely bad and seemed unsure of himself ( I lost confidence in company) I was put on hold for well over 10 mins. A woman with an accent answered the phone and we went through all the information again, that I told the young man. I was given an time window of 12p.m-5p.m, which is incredibly ridiculous. I never received a phone call about a tech coming out. Around 630 p.m a tech from Spartan called, left a voicemail and stated he was with spartan and if I wanted them to still come. I waited since 12 p.m., took off work, just for the time window I was given. I'm disappointed in this company, that's been around for decades, to have such low standards and no consideration for customers. I recommend to not waste your time with this company. read more

I had a plumbing issue with my main water line and was concerned about how the repairs would effect the use of my home and the landscape of my front yard because I have small children wandering around. Don Little and his team were fantastic! They were courteous, professional and completed the job in a timely and efficient manner. Mr. Little was very accommodating toward my schedule, he eased my fears about what the job would entail and his team didn't leave a mess in my home or yard and cleaned up very well after their work was completed. Additionally, I was very pleased that they were able to work in such a manner that they were able to keep my bushes in tact. I highly recommend Spartan and will definitely consider using this agency for any future plumbing needs. read more

Chris Harris gets an "A" for customer service. She honestly cares about the customer. Ms. Harris takes the time to explain the technician's assessment, what Spartan can do to correct the problem and gives you the cost estimate. After asking for a routine inspection of my furnace, the technician found life threatening issues and shut it off. I was told that I had to replace the entire unit. Without the assistance of Chris Harris I would not have been able to replace the furnace. Needless to say, Ms. Harris worked with me to get the furnace installed and two days later the big snow storm hit Washington, DC. If it wasn't for her I would have been trapped in a house with no heat for at least a week. Ms. Harris thank you so much. read more
