4 stars for Rod Miller HVAC. Our landlord has a contract with them for this property of his and his house and they've been amazing and prompt with every AC issue we've had, even when they're swamped with heat waves like the current one. 99% of the technicians we've had, even if it's just the seasonal check of our system have been great. Just want to comment about today. Read on if you want. But, know that overall, I highly recommend them While I didn't catch the name of this morning's tech, I have to admit he's partially the impetus for this review. If you get him--he's tall, about 6 feet with glasses and long salt & pepper hair that's in a low bun--just know he's incredibly straightforward and blunt. Our AC hadnt been working for about 36 hours and while I IMMENSELY appreciate his coming out today, when I asked him a question about something our thermostat's been doing he interrupted and said "oh you have the heat on" like that'd been the issue. It wasn't. I had to cut him off and explain the thermostat, installed by Pepco years before we moved in, goes to that first before you click the button one more time to get it to AC. How did he not assume that? He went outside to check our actual AC unit and then came back around, saying "you've got a bad compressor". When I asked if that was an easy fix, because I didn't know, he scoffed and said "yeah, i've got one in the truck. Same blunt, kind of dismissive "why don't you know that" tone. Avoid Rod Miller. My experience was terrible. I am 74 yrs old sweltering in heat in Chevy Chase w/ a dead A/C unit. I needed a new HVAC unit asap in my high rise condo. I called them. I made a decision to purchase, then next day the sales person called me and tells, "someone else bought my unit!" A larger company bought up stock. I make another decision on a different larger HVAC unit, (more expensive hmmm). I call the VP ( Brandon Tolbert) for reassurance this "disappearing unit" will not happen again...and he SHOUTS at ME, and insinuates things I never said. Unbelievably unprofessional and abusive. I told him to stop shouting at me, saying untrue things.....he does not listen. Mr Tolbert, lost his temper and HUNG UP on me! WOW I'm so happy this miserable customer service experience happened before I could buy from Rod Miller. I can only imagine how they treat people when the HVAC unit goes bad. Too bad, Daddy Tolbert is the President...and his son is VP wand will probably never be held accountable for his actions with customers. read more

We spoke with Don a couple of weeks ago as we were trying to figure out the best HVAC brand, efficiency level to buy to be placed in our attic...it was confusing because another guy said to get a heat pump type. Don really explained everything so well and confirmed to not get a heat pump because if a pipe froze in the winter we could have a water issue up in the hard to access attic, a real nuisance. We felt more confident with our decision after speaking with Don. We cannot speak to installation quality or pricing, as unfortunately, we didn't get beyond the initial conversation due to us not being in Rod Miller's installation area. Enzo from Rod Miller came to condo because our thermostat not working. He found an issue and then spent time patiently loading the Ecobee app for us . It would not pair with thermostat. We were discouraged bu Enzo was quite patient and finally achieved success. Then he said he would wait to make sure everything owtrking even though for conditoner was now working. But he found an issue, said he would return with a part to replace on the air conditioner on the roof. He came back two days later, found the issue, then found another issue, made the repairs efficiently and now A/C working. Last night as we head into one of the hottest days of the year, we realized that our A/C had stopped working. First thing this morning I called and they said they could send someone out this afternoon. Then they got back in touch, told me something had opened up and someone came right over. The problem was affordably fixed within an hour and the tech seemed polite and knowledgeable. Will be calling them again if we need someone! read more

Several years ago I responded to an ad advertising special price on first time online users. Set up an appointment guy came, took forever to diagnose the problem. Found him sitting up on the roof smoking a cigarette. When he finally finished and gave me the bill twice as much as the advertised price. When I questioned him he gave me some BS about it Being more complicated. I didn't want to take the time or energy to argue with him so I just paid him and let him go on his way. Later expressed my displeasure to the company, but nothing was done. Later ask him to stop soliciting me with your services. Since then every saved there on wanted substations at least one or two times a year for the last several years. I have requested numerous times for them to cease-and-desist and as of yet they have refused. The latest of which is a postcard reminding me to schedule a service call. The real sad thing is it has come to my new forwarded address, so the SOBs are tracking me still. Please stop. I gave them one star only because I had to do something. Was given a 6 hour window for ETA. Tech responded with that window. He made sure to show me what the issue was, and gave me two options. Left the decision to me. I appreciated his frank and open nature, no hard up sell. Work was completed, and system was thoroughly checked out. Service was exactly what I expected. Outstanding Service! From the start when our heat pump died, Sales Rep/Owner, Don, took time to explain all of our options. Not just the simplest or most expensive. After we placed the order, the office staff (can you really be too helpful and friendly??!!) managed the paperwork and scheduling so smoothly. This company has a $120 fee to come out and assess your issue. In my experience, this is extremely high and unnecessary. We were never told this when making an appointment and the person who came to our house led us to believe that this was the full cost of labor. We are now out $120, no work was done, and the company is insisting they properly explained this fee. If you go with this company, get all costs upfront in writing. read more

The same technician came out three times within a 10 day period for a refrigerant leak. The first time he replaced the schrader valve, and refilled the refrigerant. I got a call from my tenant the next day about the AC. The second time the tech came out he said he braised the line near the pressure switch, and refilled the refrigerant again. Again, my tenant called me stating that the AC wasn't working. The third time he came out the inside unit was frozen, due to a lack of refrigerant. He refilled the refrigerant, and stated that he checked the pressure and everything was fine. 42 days after the technician came out a third time the AC isn't working again. Of course the company won't stand behind their work, because they only have a 30 day guarantee on their labor. They tout their family owned business values, but their actions speak louder than their words. Their work is substandard, overpriced, and they get an attitude when you call them back out to fix a problem they should've fixed the first time. what can i say? they replaced my old boiler and saved my ass when they came over within hours (of course at an extra charge for after 5pm emergency) of my ac blowing out in midst of the dog days of august. they are extremely fair, reliable, friendly, and have been in business for decades. don't take my advice........ talk to people and see what they have to say. read more

About 11 months ago I needed an emergency furnace repair. I called about 5 places and rod Miller was the only company which could come that day (none of the companies which I've used in the past were available, which is no reflection on them). The guy who came was terrific and solved my problem in an inexpensive way by routing around an unnecessary broken switch. Since he was so great I went ahead and signed up for the 1 year service contract he was peddling, but didn't think I would get much value from it. I was late doing the included preventative ac maintenance but got it done in June or July. Then last weekend my ac failed. They came out quickly and only charged me for parts on what could have been an expensive repair. read more

We've been a Rod Miller customer for several decades. We've always had great service from them. But it wasn't until yesterday that we learned exactly how much they value their customers. Our long-time air conditioning system died. It was a 24 year-old system. It probably only lasted that long through the consistent maintenance provided to us by Rod Miller so it wasn't a huge surprise that at some point it would give out. But it gave out on one of the hottest days of the year -- on the same day when I was hosting a very complicated public event for 250 people at my work. And on the same day that my Alzheimer's-ridden stepmother, for whom I am the closest relative, took a terrible fall. It was all turning out to be what Grover on Sesame Street would say is a "bad, awful, day." I had been up most of the night with worry and all of this stress. I called Brandon Tolbert at Rod Miller at about 7:30 in the morning. He carefully walked me through all of my options. When I told him about our consumption patterns he said, "What I am suggesting is overkill for you. Let's find a more moderate approach that meets your needs." Not only was he listening to me, he was hearing what I was telling him about our HVAC needs as a family. All of a sudden I felt like a weight was being lifted from my shoulders. I wasn't dealing with a big company that was just interested in my money, I was talking to a human being who wanted our family to get what we needed. Brandon and I agreed on a system but it was still the middle of a heat wave and everyone's systems were breaking down all over town so their technicians were overbooked. He told me he would see what he could do which I resigned myself to thinking would be at least several days in the blistering heat without AC. And I have two dogs who really hate the heat even more than my husband and me! I went to the nursing facility to make sure my stepmother was fine and before heading downtown to my event, I stopped at home. There were trucks and technicians all over my house. I was gobsmacked! When I got home at 11 that night after a successful event (thank goodness) the house was cool and my dogs were happily sleeping in their beds. All of this occurred in one day! No one is saying that can happen all the time, but Brandon clearly heard me, figured out a solution, and committed himself to making this happen for our family. I've always been a loyal Rod Miller customer but that relationship has never been tested until yesterday. And now I can know that my loyalty was reciprocated many times over by the service and attention that I received when I needed it most. read more

Interior HVAC system had leaked water inside the unit, and onto the floor, accompanied with soaking wet fiberglass insulation inside the lower portion The leak was taken care. The service person began to pack up to depart, with water remaining on the floor from his efforts, and I asked would he remove the soaking wet insulation, and pointed to same on the interior floor of unit and left wall of the unit. He removed about 80% of the floor wet insulation, and removed none of the interior wall wet insulation. He stated that was the best he could do. He left the insulation debris on the floor with water also on the floor that had become present from his drilling three (3) holes into the PVC piping and placed black tape over the three (3) holes, with the tape not secured properly. I didn't expect to have to ask him to clean up after the service and know as well there exists an alternative method to drilling holes into the PVC piping, wherein there's a tool, and/or air blow to address same. Telephone Call immediately to the Service Manager who agreed with the basic/minimal expectation of clean up. Upon further thinking and inquiry of others, I sent two (2) emails with pictures with no response of any kind from Rod Miller HVAC. BEWARE, re. customer agents who don't clean up, and cause undue damage to HVAC components with no response from the Business, with a processed charge of $120.00. read more

My HVAC unit broke during the worst heat of the summer. Rod Miller sent a technician out, who took a look at the outside compressor. After about 15 minutes, he came inside and told me that the unit was completely out of coolant, and that it was probably damaged now, although he did not actually confirm the damage. He also told me that he could look for the coolant leak because his leak detector was broken, but we could have someone come back out. But he told me that I should probably just replace the compressor, and quoted me $7800. Then he told me that I owed $525-- $125 for the diagnostic charge and $400 for the coolant that he put in. I asked him why he put in coolant if the unit needs to be replaced (or without asking me first), and he told me it would be hot if he didn't put in the coolant. Well unfortunately, after he left, the unit was still pumping out 80 plus degree air in the house, so he hadn't actually fixed a thing, but I'm down $525. Instead of calling Rod Miller, go to the ATM, withdraw a bunch of cash, and then burn it in your yard or flush it down the toilet. The result is the same. read more

I called on early this week and left a message explaining the service I needed. By Wednesday no one had called me back. I called and talked to someone who told me someone would come out today and would call 30 minutes before arriving. The best time estimate she could give was "between now and 6 pm." No one showed up. Rod Miller was recommend to us by another A/C company (Davis and Davis). It was not a good experience. I know close to nothing about A/C or its repair so I'm leaning heavily on the expertise and trust of a repair guy in this situation. I explained that the system was not cooling the house and cool air was not flowing through the vents. He examined the thermostat and then went out to our yard to examine the unit itself. Without taking apart, shining a flashlight, or doing more than touch the unit, he told me it needed a new part for $625. I asked the name of the part and he told me he didn't know because he wasn't familiar with this unit and didn't know the specific part names....SO HOW DO YOU DECIDE A PRICE FOR A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT THAT YOU CAN'T NAME, AND THAT YOU MAY NOT EVEN BE ABLE TO INSTALL? If that's not unbelievable, I got another company - Thomas E. Clark - to come give a second inspection. Turns out Rod Miller wasn't even looking at the right A/C unit!! Just talking Thomas E. Clark on the phone gave me more education about my system than Rod Miller did. The Rod Miller reps provided no background on my system or what I should look out for. Thomas E. Clark reps educated me that our house has a roof system and the yard unit is only for the basement. You would think an experienced repair guy would know that! The new guy went up to the roof unit and got it working in about an hours time. Totally crazy that I almost spent $625 on a replacement part that couldn't be named, for a perfectly good and fully functioning unit, all on a system they had never seen before. Complete waste of money!! The service technician misdiagnosed the problem with my HVAC unit. The unit stopped working the day after he "repaired" it. My tenants were forced to sweat and I was stuck with a bill of $375. I was then told by these guys that in order to repair the REAL problem, I would have to pay an additional $400. Lucky for me, I found another company to do the work. The unit was repaired for under $40, and has been running perfectly since. My advice: if you don't want to be ripped off, take your business elsewhere. read more

From the get go they were so helpful and just down right courteous. My mother's boiler system was having issues and had contacted the Spartan company and was told she had major issues and had to replace her 12 year old unit.....RIDICULOUS! Things didn't seem right so I looked for another company and found rod miller.....they are great. Not only did I talk to a nice lady initially I spoke directly with a technician who talked me through what the issue may be, and scheduled a tech to come out later that afternoon. Once they came over they easily found the problem, showed me what the issue was, answered my questions and even called the main office immediately to see if the part is in and a great estimate. Immediate rip off! Even the verbal "estimate" was an outrageous insult to the intelligence of anyone who knows anything about basic home repair. Tech showed up and said its low on freon even though it was filled at the end of last season at an outrageous price. Now after trying for two weeks to get someone out to the property the tech calls fromhis truck and wants $2,000 to replace the coil WITHOUT even going inside to see the unit. Later tells me that he could add sealant at $500 and freon at $75/ lb. but it would t be guaranteed! RIP OFF!! I told them no thanks!! Dishonest before even knowing what the issue is! :( read more

Our furnace was making an awful sound and Rod Miller sent over someone right away. He took a look and was quickly able to see what the minor issue was and fixed it. We were also given several options with how to fix the noise with differing price levels. He told us which option that he would go with, which ended up being the cheaper one! He also walked us through some of the maintenance of HVAC system and let us know when we might need to replace certain parts. I would totally work with this company again! read more

Rod Miller heat and air conditioning in Silver Spring, MD did an outstanding job! I was having issues with my furnace and was looking for a new HVAC company, since I was not happy with the performance of the company I was currently using. My friend gave me their phone number and I decided to give me them a try. When I called in, the lady on the phone was very polite and helped me set up an appointment. The day of my appointment the technician called me to let me know he was on the way, which allowed me to finish a few a things around the house before he arrived. Once he arrived, he introduced himself and was very polite. I showed him where the furnace was, so he could figure out exactly what was wrong with the furnace. Once the technician was done figuring out the problem, he explained and showed me thoroughly what the problem was. He then gave me a quote of what it would cost for it to be fixed. He said the part that was needed, would need to be ordered. He called his office and had it ordered right away. He let me know the part would be in tomorrow morning and he could come back tomorrow afternoon. I was happy to know I would not have to wait a couple of more days and would be fixed right away. They sent the same technician the next day, which I loved because I knew he was already familiar with the problem. When the he was done putting the part in, he thoroughly checked the furnace to make sure it was working and there were no other problems. I highly recommend Rod Miller. I called on Friday before noon and someone came on Monday. Waiting in the heat was unpleasant but my biggest problem is that I was charged $181.00 for a part that is $8 online (the most I could find it for was $30). I understand mark-up but this is outrageous and did not include the additional $115.00 for service (and another charge for freon). When I realized this after looking at the capacitor, I left a message asking for resolution but my call was never returned. I used Rod Miller for many years because I thought they were honest but would not use them again. read more

The tech called me 45 minutes prior to his arrival, clearly had expertise, inspected the unit and resolved an issue with the burner ignition. The price was reasonable, and the service was good.
