Despite the name, history, and exterior, the interior is pretty bland. It smelled off--like cat litter, which wasn't terribly pleasant. The service was good; the staff were friendly with some regulars there. However, the food was overpriced for the quality. It wasn't bad, but there was nothing special about it. You can get way better food elsewhere for less money in other places in Appleton. FYI: On Fridays, they have a fish-fry only menu which is different from their regular menu. read more

Spats is truly a place where everybody knows your name. The servers were very friendly, especially Brittney. She was very attentive and engaging. The restaurant lighting is on the dimmer side of things. For me, it made it more relaxing and I instantly went into chill mode. Spats is well worth the visit. Steak Dianne- The tenderloin medallions were seasoned very good. I would've enjoyed this dish even more, if the meat was of a better quality. But the brandy mushroom sauce was out of this world. We arrived at 5:30 on Friday, ordered a drink at a full bar and Stacy didn't know who we were hit came out from behind the bar to tell us she was watching for a seat for us, ok full bar...and to come and make us feel speciAl...great job Stacy! Now on to Bri, she just had a bay and was also crushing it behind the bar! seriously these ladies are great and work extremely hard! Bri suggested the Walleye which would normally never eat, that lemon sauce was great! the greens were crips and I was very happy with the flavor of the potato pancakes. I had dinner at Spats while on a business trip. They are situated in a downtown area with other shops, and have their ownparking lot. The decor inside is dark and fairly dated to me, but the food was very good. When I arrived, I asked if they served their full menu at the bar, and they confirmed that they did. Since I was eating alone, this was perfect. The menu is fairly large with many options. I chose the 7 oz tenderloin which was topped with 2 onion rights, and came with a choice of potato and glazed carrots. You also had the choice of soup or salad. The steak was great - it was cooked perfectly (it's rare that you ask for medium and actually get medium) and the onion rings were fantastic. The baked potato and salad were good, but nothing special. I did not care for the carrots; the sauce made them oddly sweet for me. The staff was nice. The waitress was attentive and made sure I was happy with the meal. The only thing was that the bartender, while friendly, didn't refill my drink (just soda since it was a business trip) unless specifically asked. Overall I would definitely go back again. read more

I have eaten here twice in the past couple of weeks. The first time my salmon with spinach and blistered tomatoes was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Everyone at the table loved what they ordered (3.31.22). The second time was 4.9.22. The food was good-ish. I had the same dish and the salmon, vegetables and potatoes were under seasoned, but cooked very well. The tomatoes were not blistered...they were barely warmed. It just wasn't the same. Others at the table had varying experiences from yum to meh. I'm hoping my provision of dates can help the owner narrow down cooking staff that are excelling vs the ones that are in need of a little more training around use of seasoning. We will return...hoping for more consistency in flavors. The wait staff were excellent and attentive on both occasions. read more

We had only been to Spats once years ago, and we weren't fans because it was impossible to find anything not deep fried to eat. We read that there were new owners so we gave it another try last night. Our group of 9 all enjoyed our drinks, appetizers, & entrees. The menu now features many healthy options including salads, baked chicken, etc. The brussel sprout appetizer is amazing! My husband and I had steak Diane which was delicious, and our friends tried the salmon (loved it). Yes, there are still deep fried items to choose from such as cheese curds. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. Service was very prompt and we had a nice cozy booth which was great for date night. The food was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I ordered tenderloin in a mushroom sauce which was the most flavorful I have ever tasted. It was served with soft red potatoes and asparagus. I went to Spats for my birthday last night. It was my first time there. We were the only ones inside and there were a few people outside on their patio. We both ordered different steaks. The appetizers took a while to get (almost 20 min) and we had to share a small dipping sauce, which I thought was weird during these Covid times. We waited for our meals for so long (35 minutes after the appetizers came out) that the bartender asked is if we wanted any boxes and our check, not realizing we didn't get our food. He offered to refill my wife's pop but not mine. The indoor staff disappeared most of the experience and I had to wait over 30 min before I had to ask for a refill. When the meals came, my wife's tenderloin was medium-well (she ordered rare). Mine was done as I requested. Both meals came with a smashed red potato and asparagus; however, my potato was in 3 weird shapes and fried and hers looked like you'd expect. They substituted asparagus with brussel sprouts without mentioning it or asking if it was ok. We didn't receive steak knives and the waitresses didn't ask if we needed anything else when doing off our food (my wife wanted steak sauce). We couldn't ask after that because everyone disappeared again. It wasn't busy. When we left, there was one come on the patio and us. Anyone else have this kind of experience? I was in town for the weekend and a friend that goes to Appleton a lot suggested Spats. Loved it! Welcoming, friendly atmosphere and staff. Great service. I had the special. Flank steak with roasted Brussels and subbed broccoli for the potatoes. Brussels were really good...crispy outside and not over cooked or mushy, lightly dressed...sweet, but not too sweet. Flank steak ( medium) cooked perfectly and tasted AMAZING. seasoning was spot on. The kitchen staff are obviously professionals and should be proud of the food the serve. Went here for a Friday Night Fish Fry and was not disappointed. Tall Old Fashioneds warmed us up from the cold, and the fish came out quick and hot. We cleaned nearly every crumb off our plates. Looking forward to going again and trying more of the menu. read more

I've been here twice. The first time was during Madri Gras week and they had some cajun featured items. I had the cajun platter which include jambalaya, gumbo and something else. It was okay. Not terrible and not anything to write home about. Today, we stopped by for lunch. I had the tenderloin sandwich and my co-workers ordered a buffalo chicken wrap and a turkey sandwich. I ordered the tenderloin medium and it was well done, no pink whatsoever. It was tender so I'm not complaining. One co-worker said the buffalo chicken wrap wasn't really have buffalo sauce. The last time I stopped in at Spats, I registered for a table and took a booth. The waitress ignored me for a good 15 or 20 minutes, while taking orders from tables that came after me that had two or more people in their party. My guess is she ignored me since I was alone that night and wanted to focus on tables where she thought she'd get a better tip. I approached another waitress who apologized and said she would send her over. Then I sat for another 10 minutes. Finally, I approached the waitress assigned to me and asked her what the problem was only to be told by her she was "busy." I wrote the owner, to share my experience with him and his response was "We try not to ignore our customers." That's it. No apology, no offer to make good on a terrible experience, no please give us another chance. They say shit trickles from the top; well, the owner's response definitely proved this. read more

I finally had a chance to visit Spats after having lived in Appleton a long time and driving by regularly. Being a beautiful summer evening with a group of friends walking downtown, we decided to eat outside on the Spatio. The staff was great in getting a few tables put together for us and putting in an umbrella to give us some shade. The servers were friendly and very knowledgeable, answering all of our questions easily and with charm. In fact, we had our kids with us, and I was a little concerned about bring them to what is seemingly a bar, but there was no problem, and our server took a little extra time talking to the kids and getting them their own high top. I ordered a BBQ bacon chicken breast sandwich, while my wife ordered the Herbie Burger, a "burger nestled inside a grilled cheese sandwich." We decided to split our sandwiches as we both thought each other's selection were good. Both sandwiches were very tasty. The chicken was moist and just the right size for the bread, and the bacon done just right for a sandwich, not too crispy, but not undercooked. The burger was also done medium rare as ordered, and being inside a grilled cheese sandwich, what wasn't to love? We both ordered the Spats fries, which were seasoned first, then fried. Crispy outside and soft inside, just right. I dipped mine in Spats sauce, a mild horseradish with a good flavor. I may see about picking some up at the grocery store! I didn't see much of the inside, as we just stopped at he bar to let the staff know we wanted to eat outside. But, from what I could see the bar and nearby booths were clean and well-maintained. Had a very nice experience for lunch- sat in back room, which has a nice jazz musical instrument decor. Kids loved the corn dog and fries, was quiet enough even on a Friday at noon to hear conversation. Most people sat in tables in front near the bar area, but the noise level was still not bad there. I had perch, was the perfect light Wisconsin breading so you could actually taste the fish. They have a fun mild in house horseradish if you want to go away from the traditional tartar. Rye bread & slaw were standard and fresh, and I liked that there are multiple french fry choices- I had the seasoned ones- very good. Outdoor seating and enough parking outside make it a really nice stop in the downtown area- but the real star here is they know how to fry up fish. read more

He actually took our drink order & delivered our drinks and apologized for the slow service. Eventually our waitress came over and said verbatim "hi, are you ready to order". We tried the cheese curds and duck. The curds were light and melty...exactly what you would expect from a restaurant in wisconsin. The stuffed pepper soup might even be better than mine. The duck was excellent! I don't have duck often and this was a winner. After our meal I was surprised to realize I hadn't once reached for the salt and yet there was no over-seasoning either. We were looking for a new brunch spot we haven't gone to before and stumbled upon Spats as an option! We've been there for lunch a couple times but we were interested in their brunch menu as it listed some good looking stuff! We went there and I ordered their brunch special: 10oz prime rib with au jus, mushrooms, two eggs, CRISPY potatoes, bread, and fresh fruit. For all that, it was a pretty reasonable price. Paired with a great Bloody Mary...all I can say is that I left extremely satisfied. Well done Spats! read more
