I visited three body shops near me in Durham, but as soon as I met Tommy Brown I knew I had found the right place. My wife's 2005 Honda Accord had accumulated more than its share of bumps, scrapes, dents and blemishes, so I wanted to surprise her with a car makeover for her birthday. Today, we went to pick it up. We had to look hard to be sure it was actually her car. Gone were the bumps, scrapes, dents and blemishes! It looked almost showroom! And let me say a word about their customer service. Tommy Brown is one of the nicest folks I have ever met, a true Southern Gentleman. Soft spoken, pleasant and polite, none of which would have mattered if the work hadn't been satisfactorily done .. but it did reconfirm my initial impression that I was dealing with an honest, reliable business. I have a lot of cars, which I like to keep perfect, which means they see my about every 2 years for something, either major or minor. Getting your car hit really blows, but I cannot tell you what a pleasure it is to work with these people. Excellent staff and communication in the front of the house, excellent results from the back of the house. I wish there was more than 5 stars that could be awarded. They take pride in their work. So if you want to do something "on the cheap" and halfway, go to MAACO, don't go to these guys. But in the end you get MORE than you pay for, and the vehicle will look like it came from the showroom. read more

My story involves being the victim of someone running into the back of my car. That person had a large truck and probably didn't have to do anything to fix it as his damage was minor. Having to deal with his insurance, State Farm, was a real hassle because of how time-consuming it was to get a rental car. Really it seems the person who was screwed over the most in this whole situation was me, despite the fact that the accident was hardly my fault... The accident happened on March 15th. Date of completion of repairs, May 14th, two months later. The initial visit, estimate, and ordering of replacement parts were completed in a timely manner, but that was about the only thing that was somewhat convenient or timely (though I had to take off work early to deliver the car to the shop). My girlfriend initially thought that I shouldn't drive the car because they had offered a rental. But the man at the shop evaluated it and said that it was driveable... In reality it was "driveable," but after the heavy rains, the damage to the back hatch resulted in water damage to the interior of the car, resulting in a longer wait for repair as well as amendments to the estimate. The secondary visit yielded damage done by the repair technicians to the interior paint on the backseat passenger door, improper reinstallation of a panel in the back hatch, the back hatch would not lock, and a newly cracked tail light. A visit was necessary for them to evaluate the car and to determine the tail light needed to be ordered (duh) resulting in more time off work. The following trip (more time off work and complication of getting a rental car) I left my vehicle there to have the door repaired, tail light installed, and panel properly installed. The door was repaired, the panel fixed, but the tail light was forgotten (after I had returned the rental car). I had to wait while the tail light was done at the shop. That concludes my day today... the end of a long and drawn-out, painful situation which was mostly annoying because of the way they treated my belongings. I love this car, it's almost brand-new, and it causes me no end of frustration to see the way they treated it every step of the way. If they had exercised even the smallest amount of care (placing panels of my car down so it doesn't scratch up the parts you see), wiped off greasy black fingerprints afterward (including black grease on the fabric ceiling of the car), cleaned up the white powder they left in the car, and tried opening the hatch once or twice after they'd repaired it (the handle was installed backwards)... they would have left a much more satisfied customer than they did. read more

I'd like to preface my review with the fact that I am still in the process of having my car inspected/worked on by Brown Brothers. However, I feel it necessary to go ahead and give them a good review. My car was towed after an accident in Chapel Hill, by a wreck company (that will remain unamed). The tow service was terrible & expensive and a good 25 minutes away from where the accident happened. They were called by the police at the accident, not me, so this portion was somewhat out of my hands. When I decided to have my car taken to Brown Brothers for the inspection and possibly the repair, I was told that said tow company would take my car to Brown Brothers for us at no extra charge. When I called Brown Brothers the following day to confirm that my car was indeed dropped off there, the receptionist asked for my information and said that when I told her the day before that **** Wrecker Service would be bringing my car, she took it upon herself to send their truck to get my car because they've had terrible experiences with them in the past. She informed me that they would purposefully wait to have my car taken anywhere in order to gain more $35 daily charges for them to hold my vehicle in their possession. Brown Brothers saved me money and kept me in the loop the entire time and I really appreciate service like that. Hopefully the rest of my experience will be similar to the experience thus far! read more

I want to start by saying: wow. Why would anyone go any where else. The were polite, professional, and got the work done in a timely manner. When I got the car back, it looked BEAUTIFUL, as good as new, and it was damaged pretty badly. The price they charged me was about what my other estimates were, so it was fair. read more

Rude from start to finish. From the time I called to ask about setting up an estimate to the time I pulled out of their parking lot, the customer service was begrudging at best and rude at worst. The receptionist who answered the phone when I first called was not forthcoming with information, preferring to give short, one-word answers. While this conduct is not outright rude, it is unfriendly. I pried an appointment time out of her and was optimistic that the actual technicians who work there would be more polite. Unfortunately, that optimism was promptly replaced by a sad reality as soon as I sat down in their waiting room. When I showed up for my appointment, the receptionist did not greet me, waiting for me to inform her of the reason for my presence. She dismissively told me to wait while she informed the appropriate party. I sat in their waiting room for a few minutes and then heard someone say, to no one in particular, something along the lines of "ok, i'll take a look at your car." I turned to find a young-ish man talking towards the waiting room. Determining that this must be their way of greeting new potential customers, I got up and led him to my car. With nary a pleasantry, he asked me what insurance company was covering it and then promptly resisted giving me an estimate, stating that the insurance adjuster does their own estimate. Given that (a) the insurance company specifically instructed me to get an estimate and (b) I had already gone over all of this on the phone when first making the appointment, I pressed for one, and he at last relented. I appreciate that he finally let me pry an estimate out of him but absolutely refuse to patronize a business that acts like its entitled to your business regardless of how they treat you. Whether or not the guy's speculation about the adjuster was correct (which, by the way, it wasn't), the fact of the matter is that they are in the business of giving estimates, so why the reluctance? I can't understand how they can be so hostile when providing their services and still continue to get business. Not recommended. read more

I have used Brown Brothers twice. I have been happy with their work both times. I have no expertise in body work but the work they did on my car seemed to be top notch. My car was done when they said it was going to be. They also installed a new passenger side mirror for free. ( I supplied the mirror but they put it on for no additional charge). I feel like I also need to qualify myself as a good driver. The first trip to the shop was b/c someone else backed in to me in the Costco parking lot. The second time a deer unfortunately jumped out in front of me. And the mirror had an untimely accident during a wind storm when a box spring mattress that was on the side of the road just happened to fly up in a wind gust just as I was driving by and snapped the mirror clean off my car!! Anyway I would definitely recommend Brown Brothers. read more

I'm a good driver. Really, I am. But nobody's perfect. And I may have backed out of a parking space into a (speeding! speeding, and I'm sticking to it!) oncoming car. Still, the fact that the other car was (seriously!) speeding, that the Village Plaza parking lot sucks balls, and that I may have cried (just a teeny bit), did not negate the fact that I had to take my cute little 2-door coupe in for some body work (or otherwise drive around and be the 'ghetto' car that has the bashed-in fender). Given the sort of accident it was, the damage was not much -- but it still managed to total somewhere around $2000, parts and labor. I confess I didn't get comparison estimates on the work, but this shop came recommended by my local Allstate rep and it was close to where I lived. The work was done well, though it could have been quicker. They were booked up for about 2 weeks, so I had to wait on my appointment (though, it's probably a good sign that they get a lot of business). And then I was car-less for around a week (seems lengthy for a small repair, especially when they'd already ordered the parts in advance). The lady at the reception desk was a little terse, but the mechanics were all friendly and helpful. The office to the shop is run out of a little house that's been fitted to act as their reception area, lobby, etc. It's actually quite cute and decorated with all sorts of old road signage and things like that. read more

Really not impressed. They were on the list for my insurance company so I called them and a couple others to see who would be able to get it in quickly as I had to pay $8.40 a day for a rental. Not a ton but enough I didn't want to wait weeks. I call and the lady said "oh we can do the work quickly" I went that same day (my only day off) to have it looked over. They then said they couldn't get it in for 2 weeks. Fine I guess. I wasn't really happy but had no time to get another assessment. I pointed out the damage then afterwards realized some wasn't in their write up and called about it. "It will be taken care of" When we took the car my husband mentioned the issue again just to be certain. Well time comes to get it and it's not fixed. They denied knowing about it. (Window was cracked) and claimed the pictures didn't show it because of glare and rain. So they kept it a few more days only to tell us insurance denied it being fixed because they didn't believe it was part of the accident. Not happy but that's not their fault. What annoyed me is that the acted like they knew nothing about it until it was time to get the car. We finally got the car and most places wash it as a courtesy but it was a mess also not their responsibility it's just something that other places have done in the past (lots of deer around us so not our first claim lol) . Also they didn't take Discover card which we planned to pay the deductible with. Basically the only big issue was lack of communication and misdirection I guess you could call it. The work looks good so I'd just recommend to anyone using them to make sure everything is on the estimate they hand you. read more

Brown Brothers is awesome! The door of my 14-year-old van started making a horrible clicking noise every time I used it. I took it to Brown Brothers and they immediately knew what the problem was. I was concerned about the amount of time that my car would be in the shop, but they were able to repair the door in only one day. Plus, they returned the van in such great shape that it looks new! FINALLY. Yelp unghosted this review. This all happened forever ago, but I've only recently had the ability to tell people about it. I still can't sell my car and not through a lack of trying! I was involved in a rear-end collision that wasn't my fault. The other guy's insurance was Farm Bureau unfortunately. I was inexperienced with insurance companies and wrecks in general, so I missed out on lots of things they are required by law to accomodate. I learned many a valuable lesson for sure. This ordeal cost me nearly 2000 dollars out of pocket to fix my own car. Brown Brothers really irked me, causing so much frustration and inconvenience that the wreck, being no fault of my own, became a huge problem for me. These guys forgot to fix things, treated my car like junk leaving it out in the rain to fill up with water through a huge hole in it caused by the wreck, and caused me at least 5 return visits including hours of time in the car, at the rental place, and in their boring waiting room. The last visit, I arrived home already pissed off and opened the back hatch to inspect their most recent failed attempt. The interior panel fell out and hit me in the face. At this point I just gave up, went to a junk yard, and purchased the additional required repair parts, convinced that there was nothing I could do to convince Brown Brothers to actually fix my car. I spent over 5 hours in my apartment parking lot in the rain with a Mazda Factory Service Repair Manual (75 bucks!) removing much of the back of the vehicle so I could reassemble it correctly. Now it's done. Thank goodness. My freshly repaired car... The interior is still stained with greasy hand marks, the rear exterior panels don't line up very well, the interior is literally disintegrating from harsh treatment, there are paint drips and marks in the clear coat, and at one point I nearly lost my cool with one of the owners who became combative, displaying body language that immediately convinced me continuing to escalate the tension was going to get me precisely nowhere. I spent over 4 hours in their waiting room throughout my combined visits too. I will add that all of them I arrived on time for. All-in-all, I seriously could not possibly imagine a worse experience. To boot, the car's been up for sale for over a year. A popular question I've debated answering before the people even start looking is "So when was this repair work done?" Nobody wants a car that screams, "CRAP BODY WORK!" I have worked with customers in previous jobs. Others who do the same, like me often wonder how some of them can be so heartless, unrelenting, and seemingly unreasonable. Sure many are taught to be this way by the people they look up to. However, I would be willing to bet the majority have had some immensely memorable experience that sticks in their mind reminding them that any sign of understanding can and probably will be interpreted as weakness, a quality worth exploiting. It all has to start somewhere and then the phrase involving fecal matter's natural behavior on an incline comes to mind. No, I don't plan on being one of the propagators of the don't-give-a-crap cycle, but my suggestion to anyone involved in a wreck is to be wary, do your homework, ask questions, get a lawyear involved if you have to... oh, and of course, pick somebody else to fix your dang car! read more

Good work, horrible customer service. My husband was familiar with Brown Brothers thru his job. He had dealt with them and always thought they were a top notch place..... Until he was involved in a wreck. He naturally decided to go with Brown Brothers even though we live two counties over. The customer service was awful. They seemed annoyed every time we dealt with them, not a thank you, nice word always like we were an inconvenience. Not to mention, just on a side note they take no cards. Just cash. Also not helpful when you are I. An unexpected accident and have to pay. My husband received a text from nationwide saying his car would be ready the next day so he called and spoke to Bobby. Bobby was rude and said, no it will be ready the day after tomorrow you need to listen to what I'm saying. Now this text may have been nationwides fault for relaying false information. But the attitude given was not. Very sad they aren't appreciative of the business they receive. I've always referred people in the past because my husband thought highly of them. Excellent repair work done on my front bumper at a reasonable cost. BBBW scheduled the appointment with very little notice and the provided estimate was adhered to upon completion of the repair. Everyone was exceptionally friendly and efficient; customer service at its best! The result was outstanding; I never would have guessed the bumper almost was torn off when I brought the car in this morning. This is a great company with great people!!
