At the suggestion of our friends, we visited this fabulous restaurant in Alameda. Parking is going to be a struggle just keep that in mind, but be flexible and patient outdoor seating is the best, especially with the Alameda air and the big umbrellas that surround the outdoor seating area, anything with fries is amazing but the dipping sauce is the real hero. I made my selection easy with the largest water they could find, it was a really hot day, and they delivered over the top service and friendliness to our table and my hydration needs. The ambience is great! Everything feels very authentic and genuine, and the staff is helpful and knowledgeable on all menu items. Try the sauerkraut, you won't be disappointed. read more

My wife is from German ancestry. This place is awesome. Great menu with all German favorites. Extensive beer selection. I have Jaeger Schnitzel, she had Sauerbraten. Both were very good. We also ordered potato pancakes, which were nice and crispy and came with a very authentic apple sauce. I recommend you bring a large group, so you can sample more of the menu. Worried about long waits on a beautiful Sunday we arrived right at opening and snagged a sun drenched table outside immediately. As all reviewers have written, the draught beer list is long and amazing. Our pilsner, amber, and lager were all delicious. But the FOOD! Potato pancakes: crispy, well-seasoned. Pretzel good but the beer cheese was so good I risked my lactose intolerance for it. The corned beef in the Reuben was fatty, flavorful, and plentiful! We ate Speisekammer last night. It was our first time there and we loved it. We started with the pretzel with beer cheese dip and it was tasty. I got the pork cutlets and subbed in sauerkraut for the pickle salad. So glad I did! It's the best sauerkraut I've ever had! So flavorful where usually you don't even notice sauerkraut when eating it. The schnitzel was thin, crispy and very delicious. My husband got the sausages with red cabbage and spaetzel. The sausages were really fresh and juicy. The portions were large so we have plenty for lunch later this week. Our waitress was great and helped us pick the right dishes and beers. They were flexible with changing our reservation, had a heater for our outdoor table (nice and spacious), attentive with taking orders and clearing the table, and had a great variety and selection for picky drinkers like me. Ugh just amazing food. Some of the most authentic and delicious German we've ever had. We live 1.5 hours away and will make the drive every now and then for the food. Vegetarian and gluten free options are clearly labeled. The spaetzle is TO DIE FOR, so freaking delicious. My husband loves the bratwurst. The mashed potatoes or shoestring fries are the perfect side to any dish. There's even gluten free beer for my husband! An extensive and delicious cocktail list. You need to try if you're in the area. Parking is a bit tight, so prepare to look for 5-10 minutes to find a spot. Lots of outdoor seating so we can take our pup with us! read more

Review based upon yesterday and a 2021 visit. Party of five most recently. Available free neighborhood parking (a rarity these days) and plenty of outdoor shaded tables. Excellent selection of German beer as well as more than a few German wines. Best schnitzel and best spatzle have tried at any German restaurant around the Bay Area. Wonderful sausages and German-style potato salad. Possibly the best French fries have had in 2022. Small but warm and flavorful and not too salty pretzels with the ever appreciated beer cheese sauce - if sold in jars, bet customers would buy. Only weakness were the Reuben sandwiches featuring "House made Corned Beef." The corned beef on both sandwiches was jerky, appalling dry, which for $21 each is unacceptable and thus the minus of a full star on the review. As a barometer, you can get vastly superior corned beef for half the cost at the Safeway deli. Will still be a return customer because everything else is terrific, but quality control is needed - the corned beef is an embarrassment. Even All Stars fumble the football occasionally. read more

Their outdoor dining solution is a triumph! Longtime fan, visited recently once outdoor dining was permitted and was really pleased with the experience. Cocktails surprisingly were a hit at our table, though I stuck to the beer. German food varies a lot around the bay area, but Speisekammer is consistently one of my favorites due to charming atmosphere and the delicious food. The jaeger schnitzel is my favorite (pork pounded flat, fried with a mushroom gravy), but this time I tried the grilled salmon over mashed potatoes. Not the most German option perhaps, but it was fantastic. The freshly baked pretzels and french fries were great starters. Very disappointed. I've been going to Speisekammer for years and have always loved going there with it's consistent quality and delicious German dishes. However after the change in ownership, the quality has suffered. I ordered the smoked pork chop and my husband had the burger which has been our go to dishes for so long was extremely dry and chewy. My pork chop looked overly tenderized and the texture or both the pork chop and burger was definitely overcooked. The saving grace was our server who was very apologetic and offered us replacement dishes. I would hate to say though not all the servers weren't as good as the one we had. I observed a server named Nancy being rude to other servers and worst of all rolling her eyes when an elderly couple leaving the restaurant happened to be "in her way" which I feel was very unprofessional. Overall, I'm sad to see an Alameda restaurant staple go downhill. read more

I came here today with my husband for lunch. We sat outside and our server was kind and attentive. We ordered a black currant soda, the pretzel with beer cheese sauce, the curry wurst, and jager schnitzel. The black current soda was light, refreshing, and not overly sweet. The pretzel was warm, fluffy, and had the perfect amount of crunch/chew. We really liked the beer cheese sauce - you can def taste the beer! The curry wurst was also delicious, the fries that come along with it were perfectly crisp. The schnitzel came covered in the mushroom sauce so it wasn't very crisp which was a bit disappointing. The side of spatzle was also a bit of a let down, I felt like it lacked salt so I left a majority of it untouched. I've been here on and off for about 15 years and can't believe I failed to write a review! My first experience to my recent visit last night has always been great from service to the wonderful comfort food. Last night I introduced some friends to German food and teased one that wiener shnitzel is not the red, A-frame building with a drive-thru that serves corn dog and chili dogs....oh yes, my friend's favorite place to eat! Blehkkk! After last night I think his tune has changed (doubt he'll give up the other place) but now has an appreciation for German food and eager to return... A good introduction is the meat platter with brats, smoked pork and sausages on a bed of delicious sauerkraut along with orders of German potato pancakes...if you love a hash brown as I do, you'll love these! Those dishes are always my fave and 'safe' because who doesn't like a bratwurst?!! My go-to' dish is the Wiener Shnitzel with mashed potatoes or in a sandwich...thin pork cutlet and lightly fried....oh yes! Love it...and of course anything made from a potato - salad, mashed, pancaked and French fried :). And let's not forget the Sauerbraten (braised beef like a pot roast) is always flavorful, tender and hearty!...they also offer complimentary bread, butter and an herbed butter with each meal. Parking can be challenging and you may have to circle a few times... yeah, my usual (great) parking karma wasn't working last night! Since it a German restaurant Pretzel is an obvious choose to start with and we wanted to just have finger good so fried as well. The cheese that came with the pretzels was very tasty. Been wanting to try this place forever but always seem to think of it on their off days! Beware that they are closed Monday and Tuesday, opening the space up to La Huerta Tacos which is a good spot to try as well! In or outdoor, the place is cozy and inviting. Schweinebraten -- I licked my plate clean! Mashed potatoes were gorgeous and so tasty to sop up the juices with, and the pork was cooked perfect, flavored perfect, sized perfect. PERFECT! Jäger Schnitzel vom Schwein -- another amazing dish, great for mushroom lovers! Served with spätzle which can be an acquired taste (give it a chance!), and pairs really well with the sauce. Curry wurscht -- a sad looking plate, not fancy compared to all the others, just a sausage and fries. Sausage flavorful but not too filling, fries were reg. And of course BEER! They have a large selection, rotating, more than enough to try new stuff regularly. A round of boots for the table and a couple pints afterwards, each type ordered was nice and cold and filling and just what we were looking for. I've been craving German food, so we stopped by on a Sunday night for dinner. The restaurant was pretty busy and it was a bit confusing as to where to find the host/hostess--there was a hosting station outside but nobody was there, so we waited for a few minutes before a waitress came by and let us know the hostess was inside. We got seated right away and perused the menus (special & regular). Everything looked so good, and when our waitress came by, we were still undecided. We knew we wanted two entrees and an appetizer, but were torn between the Kleine Nurnberger Bratwurstchen and Pommes Mit 3 Sossen (appetizers) and the Bratwurst Gregrillte and Currywurst (entrees). Our waitress gave some helpful advice, recommending the Kleine Nurnberger Bratwurstchen appetizer and suggesting another choice for an entree so as not to make it too sausage-heavy. We decided on: - Kleine Nurnberger Bratwurstchen - Jagerschnitzel Vom Schwen - Weisskohl Rouladen Shortly after she took our orders, a waiter brought water and two glasses as well as a basket of bread and butter. The butter was SO delicious--we used every last bit of it. The bread was good as well. I usually don't like rye bread but loved the dark rye they had. There was an uneven number of rye bread in the basket and my husband let me have the extra one =) The Bratwurstchen came soon after and we dug in. It was absolutely delicious! The Bratwurstchen was nice and fatty, but not overly so. I love sauerkraut and it was a nice contrast with the richness of the sausage. The sausages also came in an uneven number, and once again, my husband let me have the extra one. Our entrees arrived maybe 10 minutes later, and those were great as well. The sauce on the Jagerschnitzel was DIVINE. Husband and I were sharing both entrees so I had to make a conscious effort to not consume all the sauce (he had, after all, let me have that extra rye bread and Bratwurstchen). The spaetzel was okay. I'm personally not a fan of spaetzel and would have preferred another side, but my husband seemed to like it. The cabbage rolls were also a hit. The tomato and onion sauce was nice and tangy, and complemented the heaviness of the meat well. The mashed potatoes were also delicious. My husband isn't a fan of potatoes, so I got them to myself. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it (probably had something to do with the extra slice of rye bread and that extra sausage I scarfed down). We ended up getting the mashed potatoes to go, and just thinking about it makes my mouth water. I'd definitely recommend this place--it's fun to try as a couple or even as a larger group. Parking can be hard to find, but we just parked in the lot across the street (where Walgreens is). The walk back to the car was a nice way to counter our impending food coma =) read more

Our server David was amazing. He made excellent suggestions which led us to ordering the Salmon Croquettes served on leafy green salad. The croquettes were perfectly crispy and fried with a light flaky salmon on the inside. The greens were dressed perfectly with a tangy lite salad dressing. We also ordered the Latkes. They arrived hit crispy and the applesauce (I believe was homemade) was a perfect addition. Definitely a must order. We topped off our meal with an Apple strudel (another suggestion from David) served with vanilla bean Ice cream and whipped cream. Perfect desert to end the meal. The apple filling was spiced lightly the puff pastry amazingly light and flaky. Can't wait to return and sample more from the menu. We drive all the way from the valley to come here. This restaurant has great food and their beer menu is vast! The spot does a great job of making you feel welcome by combining amazing meals, ambiance, and delicious beers. Not just good beer here though, they also make some killer cocktails. The 700 year old historical building has a modern twist, and is charming, cozy, inviting, and a great place to try interesting fusion cuisine. The four of us enjoyed so many different dishes that I don't want to waste time with a list. Some were recommended by the staff, some we chose from the menu. The Staff were very helpful and knew the menu well. The starter and salad were a flavorful surprise, and the tuna, steak, shrimp, etc. we're tender, tasty, and amazing. Even the ice cream and dessert plate was full of new and interesting flavors! What a treat it was to discover this place. German restaurants seem to be hidden throughout the Bay Area. Luckily for me, I have Speisekammer in Alameda for when I have a spaetzle craving. I've come here sporadically through the years and it's been pretty consistent since I first had it 5 years ago. Came on a Friday night with my friend who was visiting Alameda. There was a 15 minute wait without reservations unless we sat outside. Since it was a nice night, we opted for the outside picnic tables so we'd be seated and fed sooner. After perusing the menu, we decided on a cup of the New England Clam Chowder, a small fish plate appetizer, small plate of jägerschnitzel vom schwein for me and two slices of the vegetarian streusel for my friend. The complimentary bread with a pesto aioli butter came out first. There were three different types of bread but it was the butter that was the winner. Quickly after, the cup of soup and fish platter came out. The clam chowder was rich and I'm pretty sure there was bacon or ham in it. The fish platter had multiple types of fish. Since I'm not really into "raw" fish, I wasn't as into this as my friend was. I did try a little of everything and the pickled and smoked fish were nicely done. It was served surrounding a green salad which I happily ate. My Jägerschnitzel Vom Schwein reminds me of the chicken marsala my parents like to get at restaurants. The slice of pork was tender and pretty easy to cut through with a butter knife. The sauce was light and creamy with plenty of mushrooms. I had opted for the small size of this entree but you can order the full entree that has two pork cutlets and a salad. My friend's streusel was something I hadn't had before at Spiesekammer. It was basically vegetables and mushrooms surrounding goat cheese and wrapped with filo dough. It was then cut into slices and served on top of a red sauce. The execution of this dish was nicely done. For vegetarians, there aren't many choices but if you're okay with cheese, then this should be the one you choose! The service was excellent and we also were there on a day when they had a band playing. Overall, Spiesekammer remains one of my top German restaurants in the Bay Area! read more
