I'm always so hesitant to try Laotian and Thai restaurants because I'm Lao and Thai myself, so I know how the dishes are supposed to taste like. However, I was really pleased with the food I tried the other day. My boyfriend and I are quite picky when it comes to egg rolls and papaya salad, but we were surprised to find that they didn't taste too far off from how our family would make them. The egg rolls were good, but we probably wouldn't order it again because we thought the price for it was a tad expensive (4 for $6). The papaya salad was sweet, sour, and spicy- just the way we like it! We prefer the Lao style papaya salad because of the dark ingredient (padaek) that's usually added to the papaya salad. My boyfriend also enjoyed the Lao sausage, and that's saying a lot because he usually doesn't like any other sausage besides Hmong sausage. The Lao sausage had a lot of fat, but my boyfriend actually liked the fact that it did have it! We both thought the fried ribs were good as well. It had a light crisp when you bit into it, but the flavor was nothing too special. However, the flavoring wasn't too bad either. As for the Nam Kao, it tasted the way it was supposed to taste. First, the staff are top tier for being flexible when customers call and have a hard time finding parking to pick up their order. Couldn't pass up going to a new restaurant for date night with the wife and bonus that Spice It Up is nearby the house and Thai (& Laotian). I always try to find something on the appetizer list that is unique or not common at other places so I selected the ribs - & they were tasty! The sauce was a little different that made the dish so good. The ribs (pork) were perfectly cooked with a nice crispness to them. For the main dish we selected the Tom Yum Goong soup w shrimp. It was sooo flavorful. Every time we go to a Thai restaurant we always order the Tom Yum soup to compare & this was right at the top of our scale. We also ordered the drunken noodles with beef. What particularly stood out with this dish was not the noodles itself (which are very good) but the freshness of the vegetables particularly the tomatoes and bell pepper. Even more so the quality of the beef is something that stood out above and beyond just about any place I've been to. For dessert we ordered the mango coconut rice and it hit the spot just right. Overall, the restaurant was very spacious and exceptionally clean. Also, it was nice to see a regular flow of customers for a Wednesday evening. The owner (I presume) came out to greet the guests which is always a nice gesture. Spice It Up has an unusually high amount of reviews in a short time period with exceptionally good ratings - & now I know why. Even with a head cold and low grade fever....the Seafood Delight was soooo good! The flavor stood out even with weakened taste buds. It's difficult to pull off a medley of various seafood but this was perfect. The sauce/soup had a tangy sweetness to the flavor, the quality of the seafood was fresh and crisp and I particularly like how they made the tofu. I love their Tom Yum soup and decided to Spice It Up to spicy due to my diminished taste buds and it cleared my sinuses right up. Besides tasting great - who knew it had medicinal value also. I have to thank Yelp for this find. This restaurant recently opened and what a great find. Fantastic Lao food and you can spice it up (pun intended) to your liking. Every dish was tasty and plentiful. And for a party of four, we didn't hold back. We tried the Yellow Curry, Panang Curry, Pad Thai, Thai Basil Stir Fry (Pad Kia Par), and the Pineapple Fried Rice (Kao Pad Supalot). Being from the bay area, we have plenty of Thai restaurants to choose from, but what I'm not accustomed to is the quantity, quality, reasonable prices and great service from one location. During and after the meal, the owners (brothers (one of them was the chef)) asked us if we enjoyed the different dishes and welcomed any comments/suggestions. I had the noodle and gravy dish add beef and it tasted like gloppy black pepper and not much else. Took us about 10 min to flag her down for some water. I wouldn't mind if pineapple fried rice had more chicken and cashews. Both were pretty minimal. By the way, their sign outside is pretty tiny. It's truly a shame that the food served here has to be in take-out form due to the pandemic because it's so good, it deserves the proper sit-down experience to enjoy it fully. One taste of the Green curry (but you can honestly pick any of them) and you'll be able to discern the quality and skill level of the chef in the kitchen. You can taste the authenticity, the love, the true representation of why Thai/Lao food is so special when it's done right. The Beef Salad and the Steamed Fish Lao Special were the other standout dishes. I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner, who said you won't find the Steamed Fish special anywhere between Stockton to Southern California. On another note, I'm truly envious of all the family get-togethers that he must've had throughout his life. Check this out....Pad Thai is yummy. But not worth the price and portion that I paid for the other day. It says on their menu, $14.95. And that only comes with noodles and garnishes, no meat!! And if you want to add meat, there's additional price for it. Beef add on is $2 and shrimp is $4. Pork, chicken, and tofu you can also add, but as you can see on their menu, it doesn't say how much it is to add those on. You also have an option to make it mild, medium, or spicy. Anyhow, I ordered just pad thai, asked them to make it spicy and added shrimp and tofu. Price came out to be almost $27!!!!!!!! I know I added shrimp and that was additional $4 (it's a dollar a shrimp) I had 4 in there. So how much is the tofu?!?! And did they charge me additional to make it spicy??? In San Jose would never! lol. Pad Thai there comes with tofu and chicken. And other places in San Jose comes with tofu and chicken and you can add shrimp for additional fee. I visited with a group of friends recently. Upon entering, the environment is warm and welcoming. In addition, our server was quick to seat us and take our order. Our order consisted of chicken satay, sweet and sour fish, pineapple fried rice, yellow curry, and pad kee mao. It did not take long before our food arrived at our table. In terms of the food, the chicken satay was juicy, savory, and sweet, when accompanied by the peanut sauce. The sweet and sour fish was crispy, seasoned well, and had a nice textual contrast with the bell peppers. The pineapple fried rice was rich. However, the pineapple in the rice did its job by cutting down that richness to make it balanced. The yellow curry was rich, sweet, and mild. It was everything you could ask for a in a yellow curry. Finally, the pad kee mao had perfectly cooked noodles accompanied by its rich sauce. If there were any issues that I had during my time dining at Spice It Up, it would be that the portion sizes were smaller than expected. We've had this place twice and it's been consistently good, thus far. I'm pregnant and craving spicy food and the spicy drunken noodles were so so satisfying for me. We also got the flat noodles stir fry and it tasted the same as the drunken noodles, except it only included eggs, broccoli and carrots. Still good!
