We had tried Spice Waala's kathi rolls at the SLU market last summer and loved them, so were excited to see a brick and mortar come up in what seemed like no time! It seems like there has been a void in the Seattle area for kathi rolls in general, so finding some delicious ones was definitely a bonus! When we visited the brick and mortar, Spice Waala was still in "soft opening" mode, meaning, they are open limited days/hours (I believe 5-9 on certain days only). It was great to see that the menu is more extensive than the offerings at their booth at the SLU market - in addition to kathi rolls they have some snacks like masala aloo, bhel puri, and aloo tikki chaat. The fryer wasn't working that evening, so we weren't able to try the masala aloo but look forward to getting that next time! We had the aloo tikki chaat which was delicious! The combination of flavors and textures was on point. For the kathi rolls, we got the lamb and chicken tikka. I loved the lamb one but unfortunately, the chicken tikka one was WAY too spicy for me. I'd say on a star rating, it was like a 3.5 star level, which I could not handle :( so my husband ate that one. My husband grew up in India, and he said that everything reminded him of authentic food he had in India as a kid. The rolls do have a generous portion of meat so they are deceivingly filling. Side note: the owners are super friendly and really take pride in their food (they have traveled to India to brainstorm and perfect their recipes). My few tips for the business are: 1) It would be helpful for people who are not as familiar with this type of street food to be aware of the spice levels.. maybe indicate on the menu a star rating or just a *spicy notation next to the spicy items. Also, I know that this food is authentic, so lowering the spice level would make it less authentic, but... perhaps it's a consideration so that everyone (including kids and me.. haha) can enjoy the items. 2) The space is overall great! Maybe would be nice to have a few small tables and chairs closer to the entry so that there is additional seating AND people passing by on the sidewalk can see people enjoying the tasty food. 3) Would be a nice touch to get the rolls on a plate (vs. just wrapped in foil) if you're dining in. Absolutely loved the lunch I had at Spice Waala! If you haven't stopped in for a couple of their rolls you are seriously missing out. I had the chicken tikka roll and split an aloo tikka roll with my husband. Both were divine. We also split the papdi chaat (nachos) which were so unique and delicious. Prices were very fair and it was the perfect amount of food for lunch. This was my first experience with Indian street food, but now I'm on the hunt for more! I know this place is super famous and all hyped up but i just did not feel that it was WOW delicious. Nevertheless, it was a good experience, trying new food. Wow I love Spice Waala! The Kathi rolls are just so good and cheap! They are a little smaller so definitely don't expect them to be the size of a burrito, but I think they're a really good portion size. It's also perfect because if one isn't enough for you, you can get two different types! I got the aloo tikki roll with the egg because I just love potatoes, and it was delicious. The green chutney was super good but I just wished there was a little more onion. I got the masala aloo too which was good! I thought there was a bit too much seasoning so the fries felt a bit salty, but it also came with that amazing green chutney. read more

I can't believe I've been missing out on spice waala! I've passed by so many times, always interested, but would usually get other Indian food. I'm so glad I made the smart choice to stop by for once. My partner and I ordered takeout. As soon as we got home, we finished our food and regretted not getting more!! I had the aloo tikki roll (I'm vegetarian) and my partner had the lamb tikki roll. We both can't stop talking about how good that was! We also ordered the snacks on the menu. So delicious! BEST ROLLS IN SEATTLE! I have loved spice waala from day 1. My previous review was definitely NOT for their core menu but the special meal event they did. As an early customer, I had high expectations :) HOWEVER, Their core menu - rolls and chaat has been AMAZING! Rolls are spicy - the way they are supposed to be! But if your spice tolerance is low, I would not recommend Indian rolls. Get the chicken roll with egg! I also love the parle G they serve with tea which is THE OG Indian cookie! I now have shifted to ordering Ballard location since they opened in my neighborhood! But lots of love for spice waala and keep up the good work! Tried the new Ballard location. The signature dish - tikka roll are far from authentic. The bread too thin, the masala too much, onions and green sauce missing. Have been a big time kathi roll fan and this turned out to be quite a disappointment. Nice menu though - simple. Bhel was good. Alu tikki chaat was a 3 star. Overall don't think would return. Feedback to owners - go try kathi roll co in nyc (or Calcutta) and understand what a kathi roll should taste like. read more

Been coming regularly here since March for takeout and everything I've gotten is delicious. Spice Waala offers weekly specials, and I've tried many of them. Last week's was Saag Paneer, which was phenomenal. This is a dish I've tried at many other South Asian restaurants, and Spice Waala's was the best: full of flavor, fresh-tasting, not greasy, and plenty of paneer. They even make their own cheese and it shows. Before that, it was mutton (goat) biriyani, which was terrific, and chole bhature. The aloo parathas they offer on the weekend are delicious, especially with their house-made chai. Their chaat are great as well. I am just an average white guy, but I lived in the Bay Area for ten years and have taken some South Asian cooking classes, so I am picky when I go out to eat South Asian food. Spice Waala offers top notch food. I look forward to what special Spice Waala is offering each week. I don't get them all, but they never disappoint. Update 8/29: Finally tried the chicken kathi roll and it was fantastic. Apparently they updated it recently, I never tried it before but whatever they did, it's very delicious. The bread had that nice griddle taste, the chicken was tender and flavorful and the onion and chutney are a great complement. I feel like this is a great value for the price. I also tried the bhel puri which is full of different textures, crunchiness mixed with the tang and spice from the chutney. Together this was more than enough food for a lunch. The kathi rolls were soooooo good! Ordered the "Maya Special," paneer, chicken and aloo rolls. Nom nom!!!!! They were all so delicious, perfectly seasoned, very healthy feeling (not greasy!), and really filled us up!! AMAZING DELICIOUS food. I got their butter chicken special, lamb kebab kathi roll, and aloo tikki kathi roll for takeout. I'm so obsessed. The butter chicken sauce was creamy and flavorful and just the right amount of spice. The chicken in it was SO tender I bet it would've even been good plain. Needless to say everyone needs to get this special whenever they have it. The lamb kebab kathi roll was one of the best things I've eaten in a while. I love lamb and there are not a ton of places to get it. The kebab was tender and the sauce they had in it was delicious. The aloo tikki one (potato filling) was also super delicious. Amazing chaat! The masala fries and paneer bhurji roll were good, but the papdi chaat really stood out! The papdi were light and crisp, the boiled potatoes were soft, and the toppings that came with it were delicious. There was a slightly sweet yogurt topping, a tamarind chutney, coriander chutney (not pictured), and some additional toppings (crisps, onion, coriander, pomegranate). I was so excited when I opened my pick-up!. It smelled amazing just as I remember back in Delhi. The papdi in the papdi chaat was light/fresh and the instructions were a nice touch. The aloo was just al dente, little more softer and seasoning would have taken the dish to a whole another level. My husband loved his chicken tikka kathi roll but my aloo kathi roll was underseasoned. The green chutney was bitter in one but the one for the chaat was very fresh. All in all, small improvements and I would like to try this place again!. read more

This relatively new( just over a year) Indian restaurant on Capitol Hill has wonderful food. The depth of flavor is incredible. Prices are very reasonable, and portions are big! We have eaten everything on the menu, they make delicious Kathi rolls. The specials every week are amazing. We eat here every week. BTW, call and order ahead, pick up yourself. I've walked by here so many times and it's so unassuming and quiet from the outside. hidden gem of 15th avenue. - Visit again? YESSSSSSS WAAALA! I live 2 blocks away but even if I didn't, I would go out of my way to eat here. FOO(D)RINK: 5/5 - Overall: I have tried pretty much everything on the menu; the menu is perfectly simple. it's a poetic menu, not an essay menu. - all the kathi, both lamb and chicken. i find the serving of meat PLENTYYY for the price paid. really worth the value. - the aloo tikki chat is a nice sharing size for two or a hangry size for one. i used to work at a indian restaurant and it reminds me of the ultimate indian home, except that i don't see aunties in the kitchen - the indian mint/cilantro chutney is excellent and refreshing - so much so that they sell the sauce by itself. not trying the sauce is a disservice - the chai and the cookies are authentic. it's comfort in a sip. - special dishes; depending on the occasion, they have these limited edition plates. during christmas season, they were serving biryani and during valentine's, it was something else that i forget. I appreciate the holiday seasonal dishes to spice things up and it also shows how frequently i go... What a pleasant, DELICIOUS surprise to take a 1st bite of Spice Waala's Lamb Kabob Kathi Roll (based on the heavenly aroma I knew it'd taste good, but WOW). The seasoning is a stunning alchemy of spices that perfectly enhances the delicious juicy lamb (I think there may be a touch of citrus & the ground lamb has a wonderful grilled flavor). I "discovered" Spice Waala in my neighborhood, as I was looking for something to take home, without spending a lot of $ or fuss. Spice Waala fits a perfect niche between a Dick's burger and sitting down to a pricy Smith burger or Rione XIII pasta (OMG to think I almost caved in & got some sad Safeway "grab & go" food). There are several welcoming tables, if you want to enjoy your food in the restaurant, too. Last, but definitely not least, is the friendly welcome! When I first visited about a year or more ago, the khati rolls packed a punch! They seemed bigger and had a lot of meat and fillings and it was simply too good! I visited last month and was disappointed to see that the size seemed reduced. Am sure inflation has a lot to do with it. read more

I swung by to pick up appetizers and dinner for 6 with only 10 minutes notice, and they greeted me when I walked in with instructions on what to eat first, how to combine the sauces and condiments with the food, and a tip on how to say "waala". Indian food and restaurants can be EXTREMELY overwhelming to a first time guest, since menus are usually extremely large with ingredients you most likely have never heard of before. Spice Waala completely flips that statement on it's head. The menu is nice and simple, with very fulfilling options. My favorite part is that all the options are convenient; they are perfect "to-go" snacks. Getting any of the rolls calcutta style is also a must! My only qualm about Spice Waala are the hours. They aren't open enough, and there are plenty of days where I walk by and can't pop in for a roll. read more

Seattle is full of Indian restaurants that overload you with mediocre food at unreasonably inflated prices. Spice Waala is not that. It is a breath of fresh air. A short menu boasts something for everyone, and drives home the idea that quality is better than a menu riddled with less than impressive offerings. I am not a basic white guy customer, I've been in and out of India multiple times and I can confidently say this is just as good as someone slinging food curbside in Rajasthan. I can't say enough about the thought that goes into each item, so simple, but also so complex. You leave Spice Waala not feeling like you just bathed in a jacuzzi full of oil, with a happy stomach, a happy palette, and a happy wallet. Will be back many, many, times. read more

i was super excited to eat here because i crave good indian food and especially miss the street food items that i could count on in northern india while living there. spice waala delivered on taste but there were a couple of things i would love to see them improve on. for the paneer kathi rolls that my friend and i ordered, i expected them to be bigger. as i've said, i've eaten a lot of indian food (some here in the states but mostly on the sub continent itself and even some in south africa) but the kathi rolls served here are small in size which is a function of how small the roti are they are rolling out in order to wrap the ingredients. i've had huge kathi rolls and medium sized ones, but i have to say this was the smallest kathi roll i have ever seen. taste-wise, they were spot on, but my biggest gripe was the filing was all paneer, no salad, no veggies except onions and very homogeneous in terms of texture. they don't at all skimp on the paneer they are using to fill the roti, but in my opinion, there should be other ingredients cradling the paneer in its wheat blanket :) the place was clean, the service was good, the staff were friendly. i love chaat and probably should have ordered the aloo tikki to see how that is. maybe i'll give them another try and update the review following a second visit but at this point, i'm neither turned off nor wowed. it satisfied my hunger and tasted good. i'd just like to see changes to the two issues i mentioned above. read more

Walked two miles to try it, got there 1 hour before stated closing time (9pm), all good right? Nope. Closed. No explanation. Hint hint.... we know you're all the rage after your article in the Times. But if the reason you close early is that you run out of food (I'm guessing this is what happened, because there were still employees inside), you should really state that on your website or at the very least on the front door so us pedestrian customers don't waste our time. Real nice Indian street food; those paneer rolls are on fleek and don't forget to grab a side of masala fries. Very limited seating inside, however. Only a couple small tables are in the hallway, and it's unlikely they will be available. Another downside is that parking out front is difficult -- you'll likely have to resort to stopping quickly at the nearby QFC and running a block to come pick up your meal. The prices are about average. The food is better but there are other downsides to the restaurant. 3 stars read more

This new Cap Hill addition is a bright & vibrant little cafe that's really something special. Quick backstory: I've stayed away from Indian food since I started having health issues 4+ years ago and even more-so 3 years ago since transitioning to a plant-based/vegan diet (mostly due to fear of cream, eggs, etc x-contaminated and/or uninformed staff). Occasionally posts on social media arouse my curiosity from other Indian restaurants BUT it wasn't until Spice Waala started showing up in my social media that juuust convinced me to have Indian food again. I'm so glad it did! While the menu vegan options are very limited (and doesn't appear to clearly distinguish vegetarian from vegan), the 3 options available sound good. So far, I've tried 2 of them (photos seem to indicate the fries are too greasy for me) and thoroughly enjoyed then. 1st: the Bhel Puri is so savory delicious that I'd totally kiss a lady who just had a bite of it (beat that, garlic!). The flavors & spices really mesh nicely into this mouthful aura of flavor. 2nd: the aloo tikki roll is good stuff. The chutney sauce is great and provides a nice moisture balance overall. Sometimes I just skip the chutney for a more simple, yet still tasty, snack. The potatoes seem to be spiced nicely but I don't think they're marinated(?) & grilled as the online menu seems to imply for the kathi roll section - I assume that's just for the meats. Both dishes had a mild lingering heat that wasn't too overpowering. I don't leave feeling too "heavy/tired", as well, which to me is huge. In the past since childhood, Indian food has often left me feeling bloated/tired/heavy due to things like high [processed] oil content in classic dishes, cheese, etc. even though the food is tasty. The owners are delightful and seem pleasantly receptive to any/all types of feedback. With their passion for their craft, I hope in the future they can gradually transition to more healthy and organic food sources, if not already. The space is delightfully simple with thoughtful Indian decor against rather bright & bare white walls. Worth a look-see! Handicap/disabled: The main entrance is through doors and up small flight of stairs. There's a side interior entrance but not sure if ADA accessible. If I was disabled, I probably opt for food delivery service or call ahead in advance to coordinate pickup/payment at the front door. read more
