Good portion size for just $8, the roll was actually full of lamb and not just random filler ingredients - very impressive! Spice Waala is a small little shop in Capitol Hill that serves up authentic Indian street food. They specialize specifically in "kathi/kati rolls" which are sort of like Indian style wraps. They also serve up a few sides with a Western spin such as "indian nachos" and "masala fries". Don't miss out on their occasional specials that they post on their social media pages too! Ordering During COVID, they have a very straightforward, easy ordering system on their website. Your online receipt will let you know what time the food will be ready. For me, it took about 15-20 minutes and they were just wrapping up my order upon arrival. The small staff interaction that I had was very pleasant. Delivery is being offered as well through various apps/services. Food I went with their popular chicken tikka kathi roll ($7) which is a perfect size if you're not feeling hungry enough to eat an entire meal. Don't be fooled though. This thing consisted of about 80% chicken and packed a HUGE flavor. The heavily spiced chicken held a deep flavor and was balanced nicely with the green chutney. The wrap/roti was super thin, but substantial enough so that there was no leakage. It was nicely toasted and charred which I very much appreciate. If you're one of those people who likes a lot of vegetables in your wraps, this might not be for you. There are very few restaurants in Seattle that light up my eyes when I try them and this was one of them. I initially stopped by to try their lychee soft serve as I love all things lychee but decided to try their mango lassi and chicken tikka roti after seeing some reviews. Omg the soft serve. The best I've had in the city taste and texture-wise. Very creamy and soft and popping with lychee flavor! I ate it together with the mango lassi and it was the perfect flavor combo: slightly tart and tangy from the mango and soft and sweet from the ice cream. I highly recommend pairing the mango lassi with their fruit soft serves (since they do monthly soft serve flavor rotations). Their chicken tikka roti was also extremely delicious and packed full of flavorful chicken. I would've ordered more had I not been full from eating dinner right beforehand. I liked the chaat the best of those three items, and really enjoy how they've separated out the ingredients for to-go purposes. Updating my review after a year, still sooo good. Consistency when something is good is hard to maintain, especially with the kind of year 2020 has been. That being said, still the best Indian roll/wrap in the state for sure (probably the US really) Do yourself a favor and try their lamb and chicken rolls (with egg always, egg always makes everything better), the 36hour marination pays off and the meat is packed with flavor. They also don't skimp on the amount of meat that goes into the wrap, you'll be left feeling satisfied and because it's not greasy you won't feel bad after eating these! And of course if you have the paneer burji and aloo rolls as well if you aren't feeling like having the meat. And then if you're into fries, these aren't boring fries for sure, you'll get some flavors (yeah it is spices but spices doesn't mean spicy or hot, it's flavor). I have a strong feeling that I could rate the fries from Spice Waala as a top 5 all-time in my personal Foododex. They are loaded with all the right types of seasonings that make you want to never stop eating them. I can't say for sure what type of green sauce comes with them, but this chimichurri-like creation was great on the fries, as well as the lamb kabob. I'm pretty sure I could have thrown down 4 of the kabobs, because they were some of the most fantastic meat tubes I've ever tasted. This joint keeps it simple, with not much on the menu, but each item is explodes with flavor like Shawn Kemp used to explode to the rim. I don't want to have too many options in a street-food style establishment such as this. Just let me know what your speciality is, and I'll roll with it. I left this place very pleased about what they have to offer, and it will without a doubt be in my rotation as someone who is new to the area. I had the chicken tikka roll with an egg. It wasn't quite what I was expecting, but it was really good. Personally, I would have preferred it to be a bit saucier. I did get a side of yogurt, but it was way too sweet. If I come here again, I would definitely get the side of chutney instead of yogurt, and will like to try several items off the snack menu. We had a strong recommendation from a friend, so gave it a try ... the results were disappointing. The masala aloo was tasty - reasonable fries with an Indian mint / cilantro chutney - which was a nice variant on traditional fries. We tried two kathi rolls - the paneer masala roll + egg (Calcutta style) and the lamb kebab roll. Both were a little spicy (good), but the actual content was bland - the paneer was not particularly appealing, the ground lamb was not browned for flavor but merely cooked - with no obvious lamb flavor. And the portion size on both Kathi Rolls was tiny - nowhere near enough to make a dinner out of. We were glad we got the masala aloo to bulk up the meal, and then we still went for ice-cream afterwards. Be aware of just how limited the menu is - the options are few. This applies in other areas as well: there is seating for only a few patrons (not all of those at tables) the drinks were either Indian beers, lassi or chai ... perhaps authentic, but ... In short, as a food truck (which requires a limited menu), this may have been great ... as a restaurant, it's really an indoor food truck ... and doesn't have the variety, atmosphere or portions for a restaurant. The chutney, onion, & potato seasoned to perfection...oh...& the roti. I challenge you to find a place serving better in this town. Seriously the atrocities I've seen & eaten elsewhere...I digress. I thought...oh I'll eat half of the aloo & half of the chicken then save for later. The flavor of that chicken tikka is out of this world layer on the spice , chutney, onion, & roti...forget about it!. My go-to for lunch in the area. Expect friendly, fast service and consistently good kathi rolls! I'm partial to the lamb kebab roll, and I'm a true sucker for their green chutney - I try to bring home a jar whenever possible. Amazing addition to the Seattle food scene! So happy to see authentic and delicious Indian food not too far away. The owners are the sweetest, and make this a warm and inviting space to walk into. Just an FYI, there is only a handful of tables in the space, and otherwise a lot of standing space. For food, I got: Aloo Kati Roll: this is one of my favorites! Aloo just means potato. The potatoes are well seasoned, spiced, and cooked. The wrap in comes in is not too bready, and is jam packed with potatoes! They definitely don't skimp. Lamb Kati Roll: this kati roll is so flavorful and has tender meat. I would say it is heaver than the potato one above, but just as delicious! Bhel: this consists of puffed rice, sev (crunchy snack made with chickpea flour), onions, cilantro, and chutney. It is spicy, but so so good!! This bhel has the perfect textures, without being soggy at all. I could eat multiple bowls of this! Aloo Tikki: Amazing! a potato patty with chutney, onion and cilantro. Spicy, and filling Indian Masala Chai: too watered down for my taste, but my mother in law enjoyed it! Overall, fabulous first visit to Spicewalla! We had tried Spice Waala's kathi rolls at the SLU market last summer and loved them, so were excited to see a brick and mortar come up in what seemed like no time! It seems like there has been a void in the Seattle area for kathi rolls in general, so finding some delicious ones was definitely a bonus! When we visited the brick and mortar, Spice Waala was still in "soft opening" mode, meaning, they are open limited days/hours (I believe 5-9 on certain days only). It was great to see that the menu is more extensive than the offerings at their booth at the SLU market - in addition to kathi rolls they have some snacks like masala aloo, bhel puri, and aloo tikki chaat. The fryer wasn't working that evening, so we weren't able to try the masala aloo but look forward to getting that next time! We had the aloo tikki chaat which was delicious! The combination of flavors and textures was on point. For the kathi rolls, we got the lamb and chicken tikka. I loved the lamb one but unfortunately, the chicken tikka one was WAY too spicy for me. I'd say on a star rating, it was like a 3.5 star level, which I could not handle :( so my husband ate that one. My husband grew up in India, and he said that everything reminded him of authentic food he had in India as a kid. The rolls do have a generous portion of meat so they are deceivingly filling. Side note: the owners are super friendly and really take pride in their food (they have traveled to India to brainstorm and perfect their recipes). My few tips for the business are: 1) It would be helpful for people who are not as familiar with this type of street food to be aware of the spice levels.. maybe indicate on the menu a star rating or just a *spicy notation next to the spicy items. Also, I know that this food is authentic, so lowering the spice level would make it less authentic, but... perhaps it's a consideration so that everyone (including kids and me.. haha) can enjoy the items. 2) The space is overall great! Maybe would be nice to have a few small tables and chairs closer to the entry so that there is additional seating AND people passing by on the sidewalk can see people enjoying the tasty food. 3) Would be a nice touch to get the rolls on a plate (vs. just wrapped in foil) if you're dining in.
