All it took was one concha. A coworker introduced me to this bakery three months ago with a single piece of pan dulce, and I was instantly hooked. Since then, I've gladly driven 20 minutes just to pick up their bread, it's that good. Their Mexican sweet bread is consistently fresh and flavorful; the crumb on that bread is impressive. I was so impressed that I ordered 45 conchas as a thank-you for celebrating with us gift for my son's wedding. They were a huge hit. Beyond the pan dulce, my husband and I have tried their burritos, carne asada, and carnitas, and everything has been absolutely delicious. We even ordered cabeza and lengua for my brothers, and they were just as impressed, especially with the flavor and the freshness of their flour tortillas. I also ordered a cake for a party and served it at the restaurant; it stole the show. It was so good that our waiter had a slice himself and asked where we bought it. The meat guy at Bocanegra Meat market next door told me to visit Spikes if I wanted some carne asada. They told me that they had the same owners. When I went in there, they told me they couldn't sell it by the pound, but, instead could sell me a taco or burrito. They told me that I could buy carnitas by the pound. I chose to try their carnitas. There's something that doesn't seem right about buying cooked meats from a bakery. Their carnitas was just okay. Nothing special. I've had better. My wife tried it and said that the Costco one is better. Not a fan of this place especially when the meat guy next door says it is available. Service today was not great. I come to Spike's often to buy their bread and for the most part, the staff is usually friendly and there are no issues. Today, however, the service was not great and my order was wrong even though I asked for clarification twice. I asked the cashier if they had the sweet corn tamales and he told me they did and asked how many I wanted. I asked for two corn tamales and two chicken tamales. Upon receiving the tamales, I noticed the wrapper was different and asked for clarification as to what he gave me - he said two pork and two chicken. I asked him for corn and he told me they didn't have any. Then, I asked him to switch out the two pork and give me all chicken tamales as I don't eat pork. Love this bakery. Their bread is good!!!! Only downside is the line, 9/10 times you have to wait in the longest line with people at times panhandling outside. Their prices are also higher than Porto's and you can never tell what they're charging for since they do it so fast. One of my co-workers recommended Spike's Cake Shop for their delightful conchas. Thank you my friend. What's a concha you ask? Well, it's basically a simple Mexican sweet bread with sugar on top. Sugar comes in different colors... white, chocolate, and pink. My work was having a Hispanic themed potluck. I wanted to bring some conchas so here I am. My first time visiting. It's located in a small plaza. Parking may be limited. I didn't know the flow, but there is a flow after you walk in LOL. I walked up to a gentleman who was an employee here and asked him where are the conchas. There were a few people who were in front of me and they were already in line. I didn't know there was a line. They were gracious to allow me to go ahead of them. Thank you all! Here's the flow... after you walk in, get in the ordering line that is in front of the pastries that are behind door windows. A staff member will assist you in getting what you want to order. They'll get the pastries, put them on a tray, and after all is requested, they'll place the tray on the counter. Then you need to go to the paying line. There's one line for credit card and one line for cash only. Once you're up at the counter, you'll have to tell them which tray is yours. They'll start ringing up your order. I ended up with 2 dozens of conchas... 8 white, 8 chocolate, and 8 pink. I like a variety. Honestly, I thought they would taste a little bit different based on the color, but they all tasted exactly the same. They just have a colorful sugary top appeal to them. However, the gentleman said the white ones are their best seller. Each concha is $0.90. If you want a box for your pastries, they charge $2.00 + tax per box. Otherwise, they will put them in a white paper bag. I didn't know until after they boxed them. It's all good... they are more presentable in a box for potlucks or parties. Otherwise, paper bag is fine. Staff was okay. Service was decent. They get very busy in the morning so do expect some wait time. They do have a lot of different pastries. This spot is a hood classic. Anyone hating on this place is off because this place is always packed. There is always a line and rightfully so. There is something this place has that's called consistency. Sure they make mistakes, just like any other place but you can't deny the greatness of their product. 5:00 pm on a Saturday and there is still a line out the door! Probably because they only have one person serving the pan dulce. I haven't stopped by in a couple of years so the nice bright menu sign with prices is good to see. The burritos are hefty and are stuffed with rice, beans and meat. Our favorites are the asada and the al pastor. The display case has fresh fruit topped tarts, parfaits and a large variety of cakes. But the best are the concha pan dulces. They are so soft and fluffy. The racks of conchas behind the glass cabinets go quickly. There are exrra trays of them that were just baked recently. As for service, I've never encountered anyone rude. Perhaps I'm not Hispanic, but the staff are courteous and don't rush you. In terms of pricing, there isn't a sign for the pan dulce prices. On my receipt, it said $10.82 for 9 pieces of sweet bread, so about $1.20 each. Not bad. This little mini mall is fairly busy, so I felt safe due to the many customers. read more

If you come to Spikes is because they have the best Mexican sweet bread on this side of LA county. I no longer drive to the East LA area for Mexican sweet bread. This place also has great tamales. The champurado here is good. Not too watery and not too thick. Service here is usually the same. I've only dealt with one person that was just out of it. If you plan on coming be prepared to wait in line. There's a line to pay. Then a line to get your sweet bread. Then there's a line to pay. Today someone cut in front of us while we ordered our bread, but this had never happened in the past. We didn't say anything and just waited. this used to be my favorite place for sweet bread because it used to be so fresh soft and delicious. However the past three times I have went I've had a bad experience. Stale old sweet bread at first I thought it was me or just a bad day or just wrong timing but no something has changed there I don't know if it's management or just trying to save on money but even when I dipped it into coffee it still tasted old so be careful.
